In this re-released episode first published on 1st June 2024, Guilaine reflects on extraction, the process of which touches on ancestral vulnerability, blackness, colonial dialectics and coloniality in the workplace and generally racialised dynamics, and echoes her (then) recent trip to the Congo. She offers an aside on how plagiarism as an accusation can be weaponised and racialised against people of colour, particularly women of colour and Black women in particular; and how they can be on one hand mined quite heavily by institutions and by society at large, and on the other hand they tend to be the most vulnerable when it comes to those kinds of accusations. But she then focuses on examples of extraction she has experienced recently, looking at some of the reasons she has altered her use of social media and the phenomena of high earners approaching Race Reflections to be considered for the low income courses we have offered for our recent certificate. And she considers the response of some people to her sharing an article "Racial trauma as bodily archive: The Griot & The Nzonzi” freely to wider community for 48 hours, but after that making it membership only. She was asked not just to make it permanently freely accessible but was also asked to send people files of the article for their use for free. She then thinks about extraction in the workplace and considers some ways to navigate and mitigate these issues. This podcast brings together many strands from other podcasts for example:Introduction to the certificate in working with racial trauma and race based injuries using the foundation of group analysis: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1623760/15148619-introduction-to-the-certificate-in-working-with-racial-trauma-and-race-based-injuries-using-the-foundation-of-group-analysis.mp3Social Media Policy Change: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1623760/15059341-social-media-policy-change.mp3Reflections on a trip to the Congo: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1623760/14947769-reflections-on-a-trip-to-the-congo.mp3Subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.

She's a subversive storyteller, slipping in sideways with hard-to-swallow truths. Growing up in Motown, Alice Randall was drawn to the sounds coming from Music City. The dream was to invade the “citadel” of country music, elevate progressive ideas and highlight the Black roots of a very white genre. She would become the first Black woman to co-write a number one country hit — Trisha Yearwood's “XXX's and OOO's.” She got her number one, made it big as a publisher, then got a little burned. So she assumed new roles. Randall has come to be viewed as a "griot" for the way she preserves and promotes the overlooked history of country music as laid out in her 2024 book "My Black Country." From her early days in Nashville learning the craft from Steve Earle to her evolution into a best-selling author and professor at Vanderbilt, she has her own remarkable stories to tell. This episode was produced by Blake Farmer.

Kate's latest book is 'On Sycamore Gap' - Ulrich's writing on Rilke includes 'Dark Interval: Rilke's Letters on Grief, Loss and Transformation'. Derek brings in a rare French treat to the studio this week - a Peugeot 205 Rallye. Take a 205 GTI, replace the fuel injection with Weber DCOE 45 carburetors, remove weight, and you've got the key components to the Rallye.Jason, naturally, attempts to make the episode about MK1 Volkswagens - in particular, the Rabbit and the Golf GTI. He's always claimed his 16V-swapped MK1 Cabriolet is the most fun car he's ever driven - but can the 205 Rallye dethrone the gold standard?===Visit http://JasonSentMe.com to get a Hagerty Guaranteed Value (TM) collector-car insurance quote! ===...well, yes. Sort of. But first, we have to understand where Peugeot was coming from when they conceived the 205. Derek and Jason discuss the stately and reserved aura of the Peugeot brand before the launch of the 205 in 1983, referencing cars like the 204, 304, 404, 504, and 604. Although the 205 was a modern departure from its stodgy (and abundantly French) past, the base car remained quite frumpy - until the GTI came around, boasting fender flares, rev-happy 1.6 + 1.9L engines, sport-tuned suspension, and a host of other upgrades that made it one of the most iconic hot hatchbacks of the 80s.Jason recalls the time he drove a 205 GTI 1.9 and MK1 Volkswagen Rabbit back-to-back, both owned by Rich Griot of Griot's Garage. Having been thoroughly impressed by the 205 GTI, he dives into his latest drive with the Rallye - in comparison to said GTI, a much more charismatic car wanting to vibrate its nuts and bolts apart all the way up to 7,000 RPM.This naturally triggers the inevitable - what criteria makes a hot hatchback great? Is practicality most important, or can great driving dynamics overshadow the initial intent? Jason and Derek reference other small and fun successes like the Hyundai Veloster N, ND3 Mazda Miata, and Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 - and how none of them are quite as special as the 205 Rallye. All this and more, on this week's holiday special of The Carmudgeon Show. There is never a such thing as owning too many Volkswagens... ...or so they say. Is that really true? === The Carmudgeon Show Sponsor, Vredestein Tires: https://www.vredestein.com/ === Bidding farewell to his Honda Beat to make room for another topless driver, Jason's newly acquired 1996 Volkswagen Cabrio finally makes it home after much anticipation - but not without the drama that comes with a 1000 mile roadtrip home in a 29 year old Volkswagen arising from a low-mileage slumber. Fear not - the Mk3 Cabrio doesn't replace the Mk1 Cabriolet, rather, it will supplement the Cabriolet and the Scirocco with a few extra creature comforts and soon-to-be VR6 power. Jason's journey begins in Washington, where he picked up the Cabrio just freshly serviced at Griot's Garage for some pre-roadtrip services. The first stop at Techtonics Tuning in Sheridan, Oregon reveals the opportunity to get the Cabrio on the dyno and see just how few horses remain in the original 2.0L ABA engine. A worth bonus - the entertainment value of watching various Volkswagen burnouts and engine explosions amongst a live audience. Jason & company are not without misadventures - including but not limited to several roadside tire repairs (thanks, Granada Tires) and a crank(y)shaft position sensor that threatens to leave them stranded on more than one occasion. But it's the friends you make along the way that make it worth it - most noteworthy, a random mid-route encounter with Tom Hale who drove his Maserati 4200 GT all the way from Connecticut. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 10, 2025 is: griot GREE-oh noun The term griot refers to any of a class of musician-entertainers of western Africa whose performances include tribal histories and genealogies. The term is also used broadly to refer to a storyteller. // Tracing her family lineage back to West African griots inspired the singer to focus on storytelling through her music. See the entry > Examples: “Music is both the subject and mechanism of Sinners, which opens with a voiceover history of how some musicians, dating back to the West African griots, have been seen as conduits between this world and the one beyond.” — Paul A. Thompson, Pitchfork, 22 Apr. 2025 Did you know? In many West African countries, the role of cultural guardian is maintained, as it has been for centuries, by griots. Griot—a borrowing from French—refers to an oral historian, musician, storyteller, and sometimes praise singer. (Griots are called by other names as well: jeli or jali in Mande and gewel in Wolof, for example). Griots preserve the genealogies, historical narratives, and oral traditions of their tribes. Among the instruments traditionally played by griots are two lutes: the long-necked, 21-string kora, and the khalam, thought by some to be the ancestor of the banjo.

Hey ya'll hey! Thanks for tuning into Episode 108 of Tellemtiptoldyou—"The Griot, The Artist, and the Educator." In this week's episode, I finally give my initial thoughts around Ryan Coogler's film "Sinners." For me, the film was a lesson in all things African cosmology including African futurism, Nommo (or the power of the spoken word), and Diaspora consciousness. Needless to say it was EVERYTHING I wanted it to be and some of what I couldn't have even imagined. I'll share who I think the real griot of the film was (please let me know if you agree!). I'll also share with you my feelings as a Humphries Era Rattler and the recent Board of Trustees election of Marva Johnson as the 13th President Elect of FAMU.
