#109.Join Josh as he moderates a compelling discussion with Eric Bromberg, co-founder of Blue Ribbon Restaurants, and John Karangis, executive chef at Shake Shack, exploring the fascinating intersection between fine dining and food at scale. This engaging conversation reveals the mutual lessons these two culinary worlds can teach each other, diving deep into the critical importance of precision, consistency, and innovation that drives success across both restaurant segments. The trio examines how scaling operations can actually sharpen efficiency and creativity, challenging traditional assumptions about what it means to deliver quality food at different service levels. The discussion ventures into the evolving landscape of the food industry, touching on exciting possibilities for elevating food quality in unexpected places like hospitals and envisioning the future of quick service restaurants that refuse to compromise on high-quality dining experiences. Bromberg and Karangis share insights from their respective expertise in upscale dining and fast-casual innovation, while Josh guides the conversation through practical applications and industry trends. Send us a textCALL TO ACTION DEADLINE: September 15, 2025www.blueribboncoalition.org/hammersHost Big Rich Klein sits down with BlueRibbon Coalition's Ben Burr and longtime Johnson Valley advocate Shannon Welch to unpack a fast-moving proposal that could reshape recreation at the Hammers. The U.S. Marine Corps has requested permanent Special Use Airspace (SUA) over Johnson Valley—from the ground up to 8,000 feet—split into four corridors (A–D). While framed as limited use, the Environmental Assessment (EA) seeks a permanent designation via the FAA, not a temporary, training-only restriction. What's at stake - Medevac and search-and-rescue flights for everyday users, not just races - Backcountry aviation, personal drones, and private landowners (20,000 acres impacted) - Commercial filming/testing (e.g., Ford), ranching operations, and year-round OHV access - The integrity of a Congressionally Designated OHV Area and its $71M local economic impact. A precedent of closure-by-airspace has been seen at White Sands and Yuma Proving Ground.Community action - Comment deadline: September 15 - Submit via blueribboncoalition.org/hammers – Blue Ribbon guarantees your comments will be shared. Share widely with your OHV, aviation, ranching, and local business networksKey points - EA claims “no significant impact,” but provides no enforceable safeguards - Marines told some stakeholders “60 days/year,” yet the EA seeks permanent SUA – Blue Ribbon's reasonable alternative: a 1,500-foot buffer from ground/elevation to protect civilian useSupport the show

The Iowa State Fair has been included on the New York Times list of places to see before you die, in a travel book about places to visit in the US and Canada, and one of the top experiences for every Midwesterner by Midwest Living magazine. It was also listed as the #2 choice for summer fun in America by USA Weekend in 2004.Here are some things you will see at the fair. Biggest boar, super bull, biggest pumpkin, lots of food, funny t-shirts, musical acts, Iowa craft beer tent, funny contests (hog calling, husband calling, twin look-alike, cow-chip throwing), and also the Iowa Wine Experience. Too many to mention. For the day we attended, I printed out a list of activities, it was 15 pages long. Several thoughts on the Iowa Wine Experience. First, it is atop a large hill. For those unfamiliar with Iowa in August, it is hot and humid. However, once you reach your destination, you are treated to a great view of the entire fairground and much of the City of Des Moines. Very beautiful! In addition to the view, we relaxed at a table under a tree while a nice breeze offered some relief from the heat and the music from a nearby band could be heard. It was very peaceful and relaxing even with the activities of the fair. For those who drink wine only from a perfectly matched crystal wine glass, this is not for you. Small plastic cups are used to serve the wine, and the wine may not be served at its respective perfect temperature. However, sampling the different wines was fun and I enjoyed the Sangria Slushy. Here is a recap on some wines you might want to taste. If you like a sweet white wine, the Fireside Winery's https://www.firesidewinery.com/ Blu won a Best of Show for Sweet Wine and the overall Governor's Cup. We tried it and found it to be complex and well-balanced, but a little too sweet for our liking. If you prefer a dry red wine, try the Oscar Carl Vineyard https://oscarcarlvineyard.com/ Marechal Foch Reserve. If you like dry white wine, try the Jasper Winery https://www.jasperwinery.com/ Seyval Blanc. It comes in either an un-oaked or oak-aged style.Tonight, we are enjoying the: Un-oaked Seyvel Blanc. You can order this from the winery for $16.00. It is a crisp white wine with citrus, green apple, and pear flavors. Nice summer sipper. This wine was great for a warm-weather sipper. It is fruit-forward and crisp. We both gave it a 3 rating and would suggest giving it a try.Next week, we are testing ourselves and the wine industry. Does price equal quality? We are going to taste three very different-priced Pinot Noirs and see if price is relative to the quality.

On June 16, 2025 we received the devastating news that our good friend Carl Bonecutter passed away after long battle with a lung disease. We paid our respects at his funeral, but we would like to take this opportunity for all of the Blue Ribbon folks whose lives (and trucks) were touched by Carl to come together and share some laughs (and certainly some tears) and pay honor to this amazing man who was taken from us all too soon. Carl LOVED working on trucks, and it will forever be our testimony that there was no one better at it. Join us as we honor his memory and share the stories of why we loved him so much. While Bill is on a research and writing sabbatical for the next 3 weeks we decided it's important to revisit the horrors we laid out in our Project 2025 podcast series, Trump's Project 2025: Up Close and Personal – and tie them to what's actually happened so far. Project 2025 proposed to eliminate the Department of Education and divert federal education funding into universal school voucher programs, allowing public money to be used for private and for-profit schools. This would result in cuts to critical services and programs at public schools, including mental health counseling, school resource officers, after-school programs, reading/writing specialists, and services for students with disabilities. Classroom sizes at public schools would increase substantially due to the funding cuts, hampering the ability to provide a quality education. The plan also calls for the censorship of curriculum and book banning related to topics like racial equity, LGBTQ issues, and reproductive health. Private for-profit schools receiving voucher funds have been found to use substandard or misleading curriculum, including teaching that dinosaurs and humans co-existed and that slavery was not as bad as portrayed. Overall, the goal of Project 2025 is to end public education in the United States in favor of a privatized, deregulated school system, with devastating consequences for students, especially those from lower-income families and communities.Based on the actual proposals and likely consequences above, the fictional based stories begin as Martha Sheakley, the principal of Southeast Middle School, faces the challenges of new controversial book-banning laws that require the removal of numerous classics from the library. As she meets with librarian Paige Parker, they express their frustration over the vague standards forcing them to censor popular titles, including works by Toni Morrison and Anne Frank. Martha is frustrated with the political landscape affecting education and the consequences of enforcing these new laws. Martha then attends a distressing meeting about school funding. Due to the government's shift to vouchers for private schools, public schools face severe funding cuts. She learns they must eliminate wrap-around services and support staff, including mental health counselors, after-care programs, and special education resources. These cuts threaten the well-being of students and the overall educational environment. The meeting exposes the deepening crisis in public education as more responsibilities are pushed onto families with lower income and fewer resources. After a day filled with painful decisions and meetings, Martha encounters law enforcement taking away censored books from the library, further highlighting the absurdity and tragedy of censorship in education. As the day ends, Martha reflects on the privilege of parents benefitting from the new policies while her own students and staff suffer the consequences. In parallel, Marcus and other parents share their concerns about Blue Ribbon Academy, a new school that seemed promising but delivered a disappointing reality. They discover misleading curriculum materials that trivialize serious historical issues and provide an inadequate education. As they navigate their experiences trying to advocate for better education options for their children, they are met with resistance from the Blue Ribbon administration, which has no accountability to the public.Despite their efforts, the parents ultimately face the grim reality that shifts in educational policy have sidelined their children, particularly those with special needs like Marcus's son, Jamal, who is deemed "not a good fit" for Blue Ribbon due to his ADHD. This reflects a larger trend of public schools becoming underfunded and unable to meet the needs of diverse learners as more families are funneled into less supportive educational environments. We'd like to thank all the artists who volunteered their time to make this episode: Ever Carradine and Don Cheadle who read the chapters and others who contributed character voices. In 2002 a group of surgeons got together and radically changed surgical training forever. They just got together again... They call themselves the Blue Ribbon Committee. When they met in 2002 they addressed critical issues such as residency structure, specialization, work-life balance, and simulation-based training.
