The organization has 30 chapters across the state and is heavily involved in education, citizen science, and stewardship projects. Mary Beth detailed the inspiration behind the event 'An Evening Under the Stars' and the documentary Hometown Habitat - Stories of Bringing Nature Home which aims to inspire community stewardship of local resources. The documentary, filmed the previous fall, highlights the importance of pollinators and native plants. The film starts at 7:30pm but plan to arrive between 6pm - 7pm to enjoy food and drinks, local native plant nurseries, conservation groups, and prizes. Guests are invited to bring chairs/blankets to Blandy's amphitheater as well.  This documentary film profiles 7 “hometown habitat heroes” around the country who are taking practical steps to bring more native plants into their backyards and communities. The narrative thread of this documentary (produced by Catherine Zimmerman) is provided by renowned entomologist Douglas Tallamy, Ph.D. whose research, books and lectures about the use of non-native plants in landscaping sound the alarm about habitat and species loss. Throughout the conversation, the guests discussed various topics, including the benefits of conservation landscaping, the role of native plants in supporting local ecosystems, and the importance of educating children about the environment. Rebecca and Mary Beth shared their personal experiences in transforming their own yards to support native wildlife and reduce turf grass. Janet touched upon the practical aspects of the event, such as the layout with information tables, food trucks, and plant nurseries, which will contribute to a comprehensive educational experience for attendees. Two of the best water-quality sites along the James River are in Henrico County, according to new data from the James River Association's annual water quality monitoring program, the James River Watch. The program provides real-time data on the water quality at 38 different sites across the watershed collected by volunteers and through partnerships with Rivanna Conservation Alliance, American Water, Virginia State University, and Appomattox River Company. Her influence in competitive excellence has guided the Trojans to over twenty NCAA Division II tournament appearances as well as twenty-six CIAA Championships Titles, twenty CIAA Divisional Titles, and forty-four Coach of the Year honors.    During her tenure, the Trojans have won the C.H. Williams All-Sports Award (men) on eleven occasions and the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Award (women) on six occasions. The awards are given to the top male and female athletic programs within the conference, based on championship finishes.    The Trojans have not only experienced significant success on the competitive surface, but have also established all-time benchmarks academically under Davis' guidance. The Trojans posted its highest Graduation Rate and Academic Success Rate in school history since the inception of the measure. VSU Athletics was recognized by the NCAA and honored as part of the Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence. In 2020 the Athletic Department was recognized by the NCAA as the recipient of the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence.    Davis is a three-time, Hall of Fame honoree (at Virginia State University, Howard Payne University and Bastrop High School). Alongside her Hall of Fame honors, Davis was awarded the 2021 MOAA Distinguished Service Award. This award acknowledges and honors the effort of individuals who have given service to MOAA and strive to promote understanding and appreciation of diversity in its multitude of forms.  She has been named Athletic Director of the Year by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) seven times. She is also a two-time honoree of the Jeannette A. Lee Administration Achievement Award. Davis has been recognized on two separate occasions as one of the Top 25 Outstanding Women in Higher Education & Beyond, by Diverse Magazine, as well as being named the Under Armour SE Region for Division II Athletics Director of the Year. Davis served as the Interim Commissioner of the CIAA during the search for a Commissioner.  She was the first female to lead the 12-member historic athletic conference.    Her career at VSU has been dedicated to encouraging hard work and producing results. She has overseen numerous athletic facility improvements on the campus, beginning in 2004 and continuing today. The largest facility improvement to date is the $84 million Multipurpose Center which opened in February 2016. In 2022 Rogers Stadium took on a different look with the addition of field turf followed by a new NCAA certified track. In 2023 four sports programs were added (Men and Women's Lacrosse; Men and Women's Soccer).    She has and continues to serve on numerous NCAA and CIAA Committees to include the NCAA Mental Health Advisory Board. She has served as President of the Executive Board with the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and committee member on the NCAA Division II Legislation Committee. She is also a current member of the Women Leaders in College Sports (WLS) as well as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).     A native of Bastrop, Texas, Davis received her undergraduate degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. She received her Master's Degree from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX. Davis and her husband, Thomas, have two daughters. 

Carla Willis joined Washburn & McGoldrick in 2019, following a 25-year campus-based fundraising and consulting in higher education advancement and thought leadership. Carla has worked in just about every area of frontline advancement, including major and principal gifts, planned gifts, corporate and foundations, campaign planning and execution, and began her career in annual giving at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has worked at two Big Ten institutions, other large public universities, both public and private liberal arts colleges, law schools, an HBCU and an academic medical center.Prior to joining the firm, she served in chief advancement roles at UNC Asheville, Kean University and Florida A&M University (FAMU) (she also served in a long term interim CAO role at Saint Leo University). In each of these leadership roles Carla also led each university's foundation operations. Carla was instrumental in setting a new pace for major gift fundraising and led a fundraising feasibility study, which launched the planning and silent phase of UNC Asheville's first sizable comprehensive campaign of $100M. Additionally, it was her innovative approach to fundraising and resource investment that enabled many new platforms and social media fundraising optimization tools for the advancement offices in each of her chief advancement posts. While serving FAMU, Carla honed her corporate engagement skillsets, securing gifts from the likes of Disney, Eli Lilly, Medtronic, Northern Trust, 3M, Walmart, the Orlando Magic and Tyson Foods, to name a few. Additionally, she created and executed a CEO to CEO Forum, engaging several Fortune 500 CEOs and other executives, along with their corporations in philanthropy at FAMU. Carla is also credited with launching one of the very first higher education text to give campaigns while serving at FAMU.Carla has been part of comprehensive and capital campaigns ranging in size from $40 million to two campaigns exceeding $2.5 billion. Carla served as a major gift officer for the University of Toledo during its UT40 Campaign and as a regional director of development in the east coast for the University of Michigan Law School during its Michigan Difference Campaign, securing many principal and major gifts for these universities. She also served as an Assistant Vice President for Development for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center during its But for Ohio State Campaign and worked to close many major and principal gifts including a cross disciplinary $13.5 million dollar gift which benefited several units of the university.Carla has served a diverse range of clients including DePauw University, Duke University, Guilford College, Haverford College, Lincoln University (PA), the UNC System, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Toledo and Virginia State University. Her projects have included pre-campaign readiness assessments, feasibility studies, executive and staff coaching, staff and volunteer training. As a seminar leader (faculty member) at the United States Army War College, he prepared and presented a graduate-level core curriculum focusing on command, leadership, management, ethics, equal opportunity (EO), equal employment opportunity (EEO), diversity, and decision making at strategic levels.  He also served as a US Army War College point of contact for appropriate government agencies, private organizations, and educational institutions in the areas of human resources, family education, family support and service programs, along with personnel management, diversity management and human relations.  For these areas of concentration, he was the Army War College liaison with the Joint Staff, Department of Army (DA), Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Personnel Command (PERSCOM), Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI), and the Soldier Support Institute (SSI). Lastly, he was the officer in charge of the annual three-day trip to Washington D.C. for over 350 senior military officers, International Fellows, and DA Civilians with the mission and organizational goal of gaining first-hand knowledge of executive and strategic leadership in government as they visited over seventy-five Members of Congress and more than fifty different departments, embassies, and agencies.   He continued his professional development with formal training, membership in societies, and participating in Department of Defense (DoD)-sponsored forums addressing Human Resources and Professional Development. He is a graduate of the 2002 Pennsylvania Education Leadership and Policy Centers Fellowship Program while continuing to be a guest lecturer on Human Resource Policy and Organizational Culture. On August 10th, 2003, he became the Director of Residence Life at Virginia State University, was promoted to Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs in 2004. For the next nine years he served as the Presidents Chief of Staff before becoming an Associate Professor in the Mass Communication Department in the fall of 2014, retiring in July of 2017.

Privy to the health disparities in predominantly women of color as a new mother Dr. Krystal Monique understood the challenges and stigmas motherhood may bring. Journaling has always been an outlet for her to unwind, center her thoughts and keep a self of calmness in an ever changing world. During her pregnancy she found many journals that she could relate to however during postpartum months she felt a void. Leading her to create her own prompts thus birthing one minute mama. Now 14months into this motherhood journey and looking back at the various conversations she has had with family and friends she's learned that Grace and true centering are two key components to performing at her highest vibration. Our conversation for Extension Office Friday included Joanne Royaltey, Program Associate based in the Frederick County Extension Office (though she serves all five counties.) Our topic was the 2024 class for becoming a Master Gardener. Joining Joanne was Chris Jorgenson & Kate Reed. Both are Master Gardeners and will serve as program leads for the upcoming class alongside Joanne. The women gave details for what the class entails, who should apply, and talked about the various projects that can be done for volunteer hours. Each year, the class rotates through the five counties and the City of Winchester. This year the class will kick off on February 20, 2024 with graduation in early May. The classes will be held at Horizon Farm Credit (125 Prosperity Dr #100, Winchester, VA 22602) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm - 4pm with occasional weekend labs and hands-on workshops. There will be an information/interview session on January 23, 2024. It is one of 62 units across Virginia and serves the counties of Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah, Warren and the City of Winchester. Over 160 members participate in active projects in the region. Working as volunteer educators to support VCE educational programs in consumer horticulture, EMGs serve the home-gardening public by answering questions, speaking to groups, teaching in demonstration gardens, and participating in many other projects for youth and adults. Virginia Extension Master Gardener volunteers are educators who work within their communities to promote environmentally sound gardening practices. As an educational outreach component of VCE, the Master Gardener Program brings the resources of Virginia's land-grant universities, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University, to the people of the Commonwealth. The VCE Master Gardener program is made up of more than 5,000 active and certified Master Gardener volunteers throughout the commonwealth who contribute more than 350,000 hours of volunteer service each year. Almost 1,000 new volunteers are trained annually. EMGs work toward: preserving the environment through sustainable gardening practices positively impacting youth through gardening education, both in and after school producing food in public and private gardens to improve human health and food security improving the overall quality of life for Virginia's citizens by increasing accessibility to practical, research-based gardening knowledge.  

Born on this day (Dec. 14) in 1829, John Mercer Langston was a congressman, attorney, diplomat, and esteemed educator. He served as the founding dean of the law school at Howard University, where his visionary leadership helped shape and establish the department. In 1885, he became the first president of what stands today as Virginia State University, an HBCU. His groundbreaking tenure in Congress extended from 1890 to 1891, representing Virginia and becoming the first African American to hold this position from the state. Virginia State University has been chosen as the site for one of the 2024 presidential debates, marking the first time a historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the U.S. has received this distinction. Set for October 1, 2024, the debate is slated to take place at the VSU Multipurpose Center and will serve as the second of three official presidential debates in the upcoming general election. As per the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, the series will commence with the first presidential debate on September 16 at Texas State University in San Marcos. My guest today is the American designer of two of the most highly regarded experimental games yet made. He grew up in Virginia, where his interest in hobbyist robotics led him to study mechanical engineering at Virginia State University. At that time he started designing mods for Quake, which eventually led to a job at Naughty Dog where he worked on the first two games in the Uncharted series. In 2009 he left the studio and moved with his wife to Japan. It was while travelling abroad that my guest had the idea for a game involving a passport inspector. The result, Papers, Please, sold millions of copies and won several awards, including the grand prize at the Independent Game Festival. His next game, 2018's The Return of the Obra Dinn, cast players as an insurance adjustor for the East India Company trying to piece together the events that led to the destruction of one of its merchant ships and the crew's deaths. A nonprofit that runs a charitable bingo game in Southside is asking a Richmond circuit court to remove a casino referendum from November ballots; Hanover's comprehensive plan envisions the county's long-term growth; Virginia State University has installed fifty solar-powered trash compactors on its campus ahead of the 2023 school year. 

Born in 1895 in Lynchburg, VA, Amaza Lee Meredith was an African American architect, artist and educator who taught at Virginia State College where she founded the art department. Despite the fact she was never a registered architect, she was one of the few Black architects practicing at the time, and one of the country's very few Black women architects. In 1939, Amaza designed Azurest South, a tidy white International Style house on the edge of the Virginia State University Campus, where she and her life-long partner Edna Meade Colson lived. Both women maintained significant teaching positions at the University, living openly queer lives. In 1947 Amaza and her sister Maude began developing Azura North, a 120 lot subdivision and vacation destination for middle class African Americans in Sag Harbor, New York, near the summer haunts of Melville, Steinbeck, Betty Friedan, Spaulding Gray. During the 1950s & 60s the community grew as a Black vacation spot attracting celebrities like Lena Horne and Harry Belafonte. Together, the homes and communities that Amaza Lee Meredith helped establish provided a sense of joy, pleasure, and a safe haven for members of the Black community, at a time when this wasn't always possible. This episode explores the intersections of sexuality, modernity, art, architecture, and the faith community that nurtured this pair of lovers.  Amaza and Edna found their home in each other and shared it openly with their church, their colleagues and their students. I picked up a free glossy real estate magazine with an enticing photograph of summer leisure pursuits under the title Sag Harbor: A Whale of a Good Time. We traveled out there in early spring, collecting voices of preservation, community, celebrity, and long tenured summer families as we searched for Amaza Lee Meredith's modern architecture. A short bike ride away from the summer haunts of Melville, Steinbeck, Betty Friedan, Spaulding Gray, lived the creator of Azurest North, the Black summer real estate enclave syndicated by Amaza Lee Meredith with her sister Maude Terry.
