In the premiere of their podcast “Band of Mothers,” Shayna and Tracey talk to Latham Thomas, aka Glow Maven, about the importance of caring for yourself as a woman. Latham discusses why it's essential that every mother creates her own “sister circle of support” and that we learn to ask for help — even if it's asking someone to watch the kids so we can shower or take a yoga class. Latham also shares why it's essential we teach our children at a young age about women's health, including why Mom may want to rest the first couple days of her period. Plus, should women get leave the first two days of their period each month? Latham gives her take. Then, Latham plays a game of Woo Woo or Poo Poo with Shayna and Tracey, where she reveals her thoughts on everything from sound baths and tarot cards to vag steams and psychedelic mushrooms. In this episode I chat with Latham Thomas, also known as Mama Glow, or Glow Maven. She is a and she is a doula, a healer, a mother, a teacher and so much more. A true pioneer in the wellness and healing space, we talk about healing, discuss maternal care, doula work throughout all of the different spectrums that women experience, and the disparities in care for black and brown people in comparison to non-black people. “In spite of all that works against us, to know that we are still a mighty people, and to know that we come from a rich lineage, and to know that we have so much culture. That all of this has brought out in us more incredible goodness, how is it even possible that through all of this we still ooze excellence?” - Latham Timestamps: 2.24 - Latham gives her thoughts on how her perspective as a doula influenced her book 6.54 - How does the relationship a doula gives you support your healing? 13.19 - Yasmine talks on her healing experiences with a doula 23.31 - Latham discusses the disparities in care between black and brown people vs non-black people 37.16 - The difference having the knowledge to be able to advocate for yourself can make 42.12 - Latham on how healing has evolved You can learn more about Latham on her Instagram pages: @glowmaven and @mamaglow __________ Connect with me on Instagram: @yasminecheyenne Join My Community News List
Latham Thomas describes her work as her ‘calling’ – and with a spot on Oprah’s Super Soul 100, two best-selling books to her name, a host of celebrity clients and a global following via her Mama Glow brand, there’s no doubt that she’s living her purpose. Known on Instagram as Glow Maven, and as co-founder of the wildly popular Continuum Conference, Latham is an advocate for reproductive justice. As a doula, her work centers not only around birth but around supporting women through all points of the reproductive cycle. And with a deep respect for the traditions around divine femininity, the ‘village’ and sacred rituals of self-care, her holistic approach to caring for women is both modern, and informed by history. “If you think about what happens when the baby arrives here”, she tells our host Georgie Abay, “they are born but the mother is also born. And it's a rebirth for that person. Who she once was is no longer; she's someone new.” Latham is outspoken about the failings of our maternal health care systems – particularly when it comes to the disproportionate rates of maternal morbidity for Black women who are “four to five times more likely than white women to die during childbirth or due to childbirth-related causes”, she tells us. “The reasons for these deaths, it's not because of race, it's because of racism. There's nothing wrong with Black people.” In this potent conversation we speak to the self-care advocate about: Autonomy in the birth process Black maternal deaths and why they are so out of control Dismantling systemic racism within the hospital system The future of birth and what it might look like outside of the hospital What exactly a doula does How doulas connect us back to our village roots How birth oscillates wildly between strength and vulnerability The birth of the mother and vulnerability in the postpartum period Informed consent and what that means in a medical context The power of women gathering Self-care and why what you don’t do is as important as what you do Her book Own Your Glow The importance of ritual in her life Parenting her teenage son and balancing her fears with his freedom Follow Latham on Instagram at @glowmaven Visit Latham’s website Mama Glow Find out more about The Continuum Conference Read Own Your GlowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Named one of Oprah's Super Soul 100 visionaries and "Top 100 Women to Watch in Wellness" by Mind Body Green, LATHAM THOMAS is one hardworking single mama on our side. Maternity/lifestyle maven and NYC birth doula, Latham schools ELLIE KNAUS and our listeners on her philosophy of “mothering yourself first”, saying no to make room for yes, and slowing down this winter by tuning into the rhythms of nature (when it's dark at 4 pm, it's fancy pajama time!). Latham tells Ellie about her vision of radical self-care, an act that is radical at least in part because “nobody cares that you want to read a book or lay in bed or sleep in...." Nobody until now! Finally, we are recognizing for ourselves the absolute necessity of self-care in order to show up wholeheartedly for our loved ones. Latham offers advice on re-charging ourselves at least as often as our iPhones, letting go of our polarizing motherhood archetypes, and answers our "second round of childbirth" fears. She also gives Ellie marching orders for how to get her Mama Glow on in the kitchen (hint: it involves this fantastic Atomic Moms community) and you won’t want to miss her recommendation for a ritual each of us can start tonight to strengthen our relationship with our children and to prevent ourselves from getting “off-mission.” This episode is brought to you by Seedling.com, code: ATOMIC Mama Glow: mamaglow.com Latham Thomas’s Instagram: @glowmaven Atomic Moms Instagram: @atomicmoms AtomicMoms.com "Mama Glow : A Hip Guide to Your Fabulous Abundant Pregnancy" by Latham Thomas
