The primary aspect of birth is finding a place that supports us.For some women, no institution feels like a safe space where they can truly let go and allow their intuition to guide them—where they can allow the process to unfold in its most optimal form. For others, a birth center that supports the natural function of the body is the right path.Self-direction is crucial in any birth journey.Afeeda's birth story is an inspiring example of a self-directed birth—one rooted in deep connection with the self and intuition.Today, we discuss:Afeeda's journey of finding a birth centerEvents leading up to the birthCounseling she received along the waySelf-directed decisions made at every stepHer experience of labor and birthBreastfeeding and immediate postpartumAfeeda holds a doctorate in Sociology and is a Social Anthropologist. Exercise during pregnancy and charlatans attacking C-sections

Send us a textThis week I am a little bit upset. Not about the first subject which follows a question about what type of exercise, and at which intensity, is safe to do during pregnancy. That's a great question and a doddle to answer :)But I'm upset about the single worst Instagram video I have seen from someone working with babies. Here it is for those of you who want to have a look. The Osteopath in the video is making LOADS of dumb, and I do mean idiotic, claims about the effects of a C-section on a baby's spine and it's health. He claims the "lumbar spine is reversed" or "missing" and that is clearly complete and utter nonsense. But the video has 400k likes and this grifter has 600k followers. So I go over some of the idiotic claims people make online to scare those of you wanting, or needing, a C-section into parting with your money. And then there's a bit of jazz to calm me down :)As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles! So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! BUT, if you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering. This means you can sign up after your first child, use the program and recover and then still have access after giving birth to child 2 and 3!None of this "pay X amount a year" nonsense, once you've paid..you've paid! This makes HPNB not just the most efficient and complete post-partum recovery program, it's also BY FAR the best value.Though I'm not terribly active on  Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. This week I'm delighted to be joined by Cat LaCohie and we're talking everything body confidence. We explore the reality of societal pressures that many women face after pregnancy, and how Cat uses burlesque as a medium to reconnect women with their bodies and embrace self-love. But this episode is not just about burlesque. It's about the journey of self-discovery, and the transformative power of reclaiming one's identity. Cat shares how embodying powerful characters through burlesque helped her reclaim her strength during moments of self-doubt. She challenges the notion of seeking constant approval from others, emphasizing the value of self-worth and the joy of being in the company of the right people. As our conversation draws to a close, Cat sheds light on the importance of being vocal about who you are, and how it helps filter out those who don't belong in your life. She shares her inspiring journey, from building her own website to teaching burlesque classes, and how she learned to say 'I'm amazing and you're welcome' instead of apologizing for her actions. The message of this episode is clear: Individuality, self-love and authenticity can be empowering tools to navigate through life's challenges. 244: This week, I'm joined by Lindsey Meehleis, a certified midwife, doula, lactation consultant, EMT, CPR instructor, and neonatal resuscitation provider. Lindsey brings a truly holistic approach to birth, and our conversation dives deep into the importance of honoring the natural physiology of labor. As someone on my own fertility journey, I asked all the questions I've been curious about — from how to find a midwife to what real support during birth looks like. We explore the over-medicalization of birth in the Western world, how to prepare for a more empowered and informed birthing experience, and why individualized care matters so much. Lindsey's wisdom and passion for supporting women through this rite of passage is incredibly inspiring — I left this conversation wanting her by my side when I give birth someday. Topics Discussed: What is the difference between a midwife and a doula? How can I prepare for a natural birth in a medicalized world? Are epidurals and Pitocin necessary for every labor? What are the risks of relying on baby formula over breastfeeding? How to find a trustworthy midwife or doula? Some call birth risky. Others know it's a normal bodily function. Today, we're dismantling the fear-based narratives surrounding birth with a podcast favorite—Dr. Stuart Fischbein (Dr. Stu). He began as a mainstream obstetrician with over 35 years of experience, but eventually discovered a whole new approach to birth after working with midwives. (You can hear more about his story in episode 13 of this podcast.) Since then, he's attended hundreds of home births, published peer-reviewed studies on breech, twin, and out-of-hospital births, and now travels the world teaching physiological birth and informed consent. Let me tell you—he's the voice you want to hear when it comes to a balanced and healthy perspective on both the risks and the natural design of birth. In this episode, we're diving into some of the hottest birth topics every woman needs to know—covering what's true, what's fear-based, and the science to back it up. From the political layers of modern maternity care to the financial incentives, routine interventions, and the myth of “high-risk” pregnancies—this episode will challenge what you've been told. It's time to trust your body, question the system, and reclaim your right to birth on your own terms.  In this episode, you'll learn: • Why pregnancy isn't a medical emergency—and how fear is used to control outcomes. • What the research really says about knots and tangled cords around the baby's neck.  • How interventions like epidurals and constant monitoring can disrupt natural birth. • Why informed consent is often overlooked in hospital settings. • How to plan ahead, find a supportive provider, and protect your birth choices.  This isn't anti-doctor—it's pro-mother, pro-education, and pro-truth.

(hint, it's not "too posh to push!!")Why do doctors recommend c-sections for certain women? (hint; it's not "to make money"!)What % of c-sections is elective? (it's a LOT lower than most people think..and even then there are usually very good reasons for it)I also talk about the "diastasis recti is an adaptation" argument a bit and compare it to Wolverine's claws. On this week's episode of Sense, by Meg Faure, we explore the complex and deeply personal journey of birth with Dr. Mama Aso Peprah, a leading gynecologist and advocate for maternal empowerment. Birth is a transformative experience, yet many women feel uncertain about their options. South Africa has one of the highest C-section rates in the world, and many mothers are left questioning whether they truly had a choice. Dr. Mama Aso shares expert insights on birth choices, medical interventions, and the steps women can take to feel empowered in their birthing experience. Understanding South Africa's High C-Section Rate South Africa's private healthcare system has one of the highest C-section rates globally, reaching up to 75% in private hospitals. Dr. Mama Aso explains the key drivers behind this trend, including fear-based decision-making, medical convenience, and hospital policies. She highlights the World Health Organization's recommendation that C-section rates should ideally be around 15% to balance safety and necessity. The Power of Informed Birth Choices Mothers should feel in control of their birth experience. Dr. Mama Aso emphasizes that knowledge is power when navigating delivery options. She encourages expecting moms to educate themselves, ask questions, and advocate for the birth they want. She also discusses the importance of choosing a supportive healthcare provider who respects personal preferences. How Fear Impacts Labor and Birth Fear can significantly slow labor progression, often leading to unnecessary interventions. Dr. Mama Aso explains how stress hormones like cortisol interfere with oxytocin, the hormone responsible for contractions. She shares strategies to reduce fear, such as breathing techniques, movement, and emotional preparation, to help labor progress more naturally. The Role of Medical Interventions in Birth While medical interventions can be life-saving, some increase the likelihood of a C-section. Dr. Mama Aso discusses common interventions such as inductions, epidurals, and fetal monitoring, explaining how they impact labor. She also provides guidance on when interventions are necessary and when they may be avoidable. Steps to Take for a Positive Birth Experience Mothers can take practical steps to increase their chances of a vaginal birth if they choose. Dr. Mama Aso highlights the benefits of birth preparation, movement during labor, and having a strong support team, such as a doula or midwife. She also stresses that every birth—C-section or vaginal—can be empowering when the mother is informed and involved. This episode is a must-listen for any expecting mother who wants to feel empowered and informed about birth. Dr. Mama Aso provides expert advice on navigating birth choices, overcoming fear, and advocating for the best possible experience. Whether you're planning for a vaginal birth, considering a C-section, or simply exploring your options, this episode will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to birth your way. Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Amana Amana is a mama of two living children from the US. Amana offers birth, death and grief support services as well as a podcast called The Heart of the Soul where she interviews amazing people around the world. I had the honor of being one of her guests earlier this year. She has a magical story about how she called in her husband and how they met on the summer solstice. And in this episode she shares her and her husbands conception and birth journey that involved a parents biggest nightmare. Death.  In her beautiful story of carrying and birthing her first baby who wasn't compatible with life, in the safety of her home surrounded by love and peace we get a beautiful insight into the ceremony of the death of a child. It is a heart opening story with so much love infused in it and I do believe these stories are so important to share with the world. Birth is not always Life. And we are so foreign to speaking about death in an honoring and sacred way instead of filled with fear and medicalization. So we spend a big chunk of the first part of this episode covering natural death in the home and the grieving process of a family. If you don't feel like it is time for you to hear this story right now then fast forward about 30 min in and listen to her live birth stories that are equally as beautiful and inspiring win their own way.
