We know that in many countries, as many as 1 in 5 new mothers experience some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMADs). These illnesses frequently go unnoticed and untreated, which can lead to tragic and long-term consequences for both mother and child. With so many mothers experiencing PMADs, we wanted to talk to an amazing mom who knows the importance of maternal mental health all too well, Erin Bagwell. Erin is a documentary filmmaker, blogger, and new mom. In 2018, Erin became a mother and started filming her new documentary, Year One. The film is an intimate look at the first year of motherhood through Erin's eyes. It addresses the identity shifts, the challenges of experiencing postpartum depression, and the everyday extraordinary moments of being a new mom. Year One is out now and available on YouTube. Erin's story has been featured in Forbes, TED, Vogue, and The Washington Post and she was named one of Oprah's SuperSoul100—a list featuring extraordinary individuals that live life intentionally, create great social impact, and bring inspiration to others. Erin was also featured in Apple's Behind the Mac campaign, highlighting some of the most creative people in Brooklyn. We love how Erin's latest film, Year One, really shows the significance of maternal mental health and motherhood. Having experienced postpartum depression herself, we're grateful to have talked to her about her experience, have her answer our questions, and share her thoughts on this important topic. Also, here is a list of Erin's recommended resources for mothers!
Erin Bagwell was raised in a household that encouraged artistic expression. Her mother never fit in the traditional army mom image, wearing tie-dye clothing and driving a red convertible, she stood apart. While her parents supported both she and her brother to express themselves through art, they assumed Erin would get married and therefore be cared for by a husband. As a result, they allowed her to more openly to pursue arts.Visiting us today is Erin Bagwell, documentary filmmaker, blogger, and mom. Her first feature-length film - Dream, Girl - premiered at the White House under the Obama administration in 2016 and was recognized by Oprah on her SuperSoul100 list. In 2018, Erin became a mother and started filming her new documentary, Year One. The film is an intimate look at the first year of motherhood through Erin's eyes. It addresses the identity shifts, the challenges of experiencing postpartum depression, and the everyday extraordinary moments of being a new mom.On her daughter's first birthday, Erin's mind was flooded with memories of the day she became a mother. She experienced firsthand the physical and emotional strength women are capable of; since then, Erin is in awe of us, women, and of our power, patience, and our ability to carry on like we are not also carrying another world on our shoulders. Those early days made her remember her motherhood experience wasn't unique; women have been doing this since the beginning of time. Welcome to episode #772 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #772 - Host: Mitch Joel. I was really excited about the opportunity to spend some time with Luvvie Ajayi Jones. She is an author, podcast host, speaker, and someone who has been blogging just a little bit longer than me (there are not many of us left). Luvvie thrives at the intersection of comedy, media, and justice. Her debut book, I'm Judging You - The Do-Better Manual, was released to critical acclaim, and her new book, Professional Troublemaker - The Fear-Fighter Manual is another bestseller. It's hard to fathom, but Luvvie has been blogging for 18 years and covers all things culture with a critical yet humorous lens. That same razor-sharp voice spurred her wildly popular TED Talk, Get Comfortable with being uncomfortable, to almost six million views. Luvvie also connects with her audience through her social network, LuvvNation, where she is the go-to source for elevated conversations about all things buzzworthy and doing better at life. It serves as a safe space in a dumpster fire world, and has over 15,000 members. She has received numerous accolades including being chosen by Oprah Winfrey as part of her inaugural SuperSoul100 list as someone who “elevates humanity.” She hosts a podcast called, Professional Troublemaker, where she has conversations with incredible people who have committed to living life loudly, with courage and conviction. Enjoy the conversation.... Running time: 52:33. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Please visit and leave comments on the blog - Six Pixels of Separation. It’s an absolute honour to bring you this episode of the Love, Sex + Magic Podcast with none other than Mastin Kipp. Mastin is one of the greatest thought leaders of our time, and this was recognised by his mention in Oprah’s SuperSoul100. It’s no surprise then, that this episode is medicine for the soul. Mastin lets us in on his practical approach to healing our trauma, and how we can use it to elevate ourselves and those around us. We dig deep to define exactly what trauma looks like (spoiler: it doesn’t always come with a capital T!), and the ways in which it can show up for us in life. This includes attachment styles, addiction, psychological disorders, and even physical pain. We riff on relationships to define the difference between a triggering dynamic and a healthy, healing space for mutual growth. We chat parenting styles and ancestral trauma, collective trauma with regards to Covid-19, as well as where trauma is stored in the physical body. Mixing the spiritual with science to reshape and deshame limiting beliefs, we unpack how triggers are our body’s response to keeping us safe - meaning it’s actually working perfectly! AND Mastin reveals how working on trauma from a conscious place can actually take us ‘beyond spiritual growth’. It’s practical magic - you don’t want to miss this! Erin Bagwell, Dream, Girl Director; Feminist Wednesday Founder Do you really need to be a starving artist as you pursue your life’s passion? Many artists do allow the everyday pressures of simply making ends meet limit their growth and affect their money mindset. Kathleen interviews Erin Bagwell, director of the film Dream, Girl, about the myth that to be a true artist you must be poor and starving. Key Take Aways: Many people are uncomfortable talking about money, but practice helps. Make time to practice engaging in money talks with a trusted friend or colleague. In time, these discussions will get easier. Find a tribe to support you and cheer you on as you change your money mindset from scarcity to abundance. Research shows that if you surround yourself with people who are committed to making and managing their money and letting go of under-earning tendencies, you are more likely to move up the socioeconomic ladder. Set aside a time each week to focus on your finances. If this is difficult for you to do, find an accountability partner such as a coach, a bookkeeper or another business owner. By making financial management a priority you will continue to learn and grow. Special offer: Check out Erin’s eBook, Creative Money, it can be purchased here. Erin Bagwell is the founder of Feminist Wednesday, a feminist storytelling blog and the director of Dream, Girl a documentary film showcasing the stories of inspiring and ambitious female entrepreneurs. Dream, Girl premiered May 2016 at the White House and through her work with the film was named on Oprah's SuperSoul100. Dream, Girl is now available for public screenings and was the number one feminist film to watch by the Huffington Post.

EPISODE SNEAK PEEK: "Why do you have to have an addiction to have a support group? Isn't being a girl hard enough today?" with Alexis Jones LISTEN! WHAT'S IN THIS EPISODE? I first found Alexis and I AM THAT GIRL my sophomore year of college when I was drowning in the weight of life that feels unbearably heavy when you're 19 years old. She recently launched ProtectHer and is revolutionizing sexual assault prevention by going into college locker rooms. We talk more about both of those in our conversation and the how-she-got-started-doing-these-things parts of her story. It's one hell of a conversation and Alexis is one hell of a human. Erin had fears and doubts when she quit her “soul-sucking” 9-to-5 job and began producing Dream, Girl. She drew on the support of others (her “tribe”), including the women entrepreneurs in her film, to gain the courage and expertise needed to succeed. In the second half of the show, Erin describes the positive impact the film has had on students and on entrepreneurial communities where it sparks important, inspiring discussions. Named one of Oprah's Super Soul 100 visionaries and "Top 100 Women to Watch in Wellness" by Mind Body Green, LATHAM THOMAS is one hardworking single mama on our side. Maternity/lifestyle maven and NYC birth doula, Latham schools ELLIE KNAUS and our listeners on her philosophy of “mothering yourself first”, saying no to make room for yes, and slowing down this winter by tuning into the rhythms of nature (when it's dark at 4 pm, it's fancy pajama time!). Latham tells Ellie about her vision of radical self-care, an act that is radical at least in part because “nobody cares that you want to read a book or lay in bed or sleep in...." Nobody until now! Finally, we are recognizing for ourselves the absolute necessity of self-care in order to show up wholeheartedly for our loved ones. Latham offers advice on re-charging ourselves at least as often as our iPhones, letting go of our polarizing motherhood archetypes, and answers our "second round of childbirth" fears. She also gives Ellie marching orders for how to get her Mama Glow on in the kitchen (hint: it involves this fantastic Atomic Moms community) and you won’t want to miss her recommendation for a ritual each of us can start tonight to strengthen our relationship with our children and to prevent ourselves from getting “off-mission.” This episode is brought to you by Seedling.com, code: ATOMIC Mama Glow: mamaglow.com Latham Thomas’s Instagram: @glowmaven Atomic Moms Instagram: @atomicmoms AtomicMoms.com "Mama Glow : A Hip Guide to Your Fabulous Abundant Pregnancy" by Latham Thomas
