Slim & Husky's was ranked #5 out of 101 in The Daily Meal's 101 Best Pizzas in America. They have been featured on CBS World News, Good Morning America, and Travel Channel. They have also been featured in USA Today, Essence Magazine, Southern Living, Food & Wine, Forbes Magazine, the Washington Post, Taste of the South, and the New York Times. The three Tennessee State University grads and football players (Clint Gray – CMO, Derrick Moore- Chief Development Officer & EJ Reed – CEO) started Slim + Husky's as a way to serve unique pies and provide jobs to their neighborhood in North Nashville. Now, they have expanded locations across the country and offer build-your-own pizzas, take-out options, catering services, and national delivery. This includes opening the first Black-owned restaurant to open on Broadway in Nashville. “Pizza. Art. Music” is the motto at Slim & Husky's, which was created to create change and opportunities within underserved communities. Crowds flock to its four Tennessee locations (as well as two in Atlanta and one in Sacramento with additional locations opening throughout 2023) to indulge in artisan pizza while vibing to Hip Hop and R&B classics. In the beginning,Slim & Husky's was founded on a shared dream inside a garage in 2015. The clever name came from a joke the longtime friends have been laughing about for years. One of them has always been a slim guy, but the other two were always big fellas, forcing their mothers to shop for clothing in the children's husky section. The 3 owners consider their biggest accomplishments as opening the first Slim & Husky's restaurant in their North Nashville neighborhood, the ability to provide a substantial number of jobs, and the ability to live out their dream while providing a real impact on their communities. When the owners aren't perfecting their product, they are hosting community events and participating in speaking engagements at local schools, nonprofits, small businesses, and organizations. From hosting events to support local artists to honoring area teachers, they strive to recognize and promote positivity wherever they go.  slimandhuskys.com

When Linda Villarosa was the health editor of Essence Magazine, she says she had a one-track mind. A former college athlete, Linda grew up, like many of us, thinking about health on an individual level. But after reporting on environmental justice, the AIDS crisis, and black mother and infant mortality rates, Linda has uncovered just how much culture and public health infrastructure impact life expectancy – specifically for black Americans. Her 2018 cover story on “Why America's Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-or-Death Crisis" was a finalist for a National Magazine Award. In today's episode, she highlights how structural racism impacts community health and talks about why she's still optimistic about combating health disparities in the country and across the globe.

With over 10 years of experience in the industry he has solidified a name for himself. His work has been featured in publications such as Essence, Harper's Bazaar, WWD, and Vogue UK to name a few. While he has photographed some of the most famous artists of today — Lizzo, Billy Porter, Regina King, Alicia Keys — he's as ambitious as ever and still pushing forward on his artistic journey.   JD believes "An artist walks by feeling, by emotion, by intuition. In her early teens, Lyndsey began DJ-ing with the moniker DJ Lovely, and embarked on a ten-year-long journey "Playing Music To Satisfy Everyone." She later set her DJ-ing gigs aside as she focused on her social media career, successfully maintaining and creating social activations for brands like The Maury Show, BET, Casa Dragones Tequila, and ESSENCE Magazine. Seldom do we think of the study of history as a journey of self-discovery. And if that claim has any truth, it's because we modern people tend to see ourselves as autonomous, independent, untethered, and unaffected by our biological and cultural genealogies. But there's a story in our DNA that didn't start with us. And Lisa Sharon Harper has been on a decades-long journey of self-discovery, piecing together her family's lineage from their arrival on America's shores—via slave boats, through the twists and turns of slavery and indentured servitude, through America's post-civil war attempt at Reconstruction, down into the shadowy valley of Jim Crow and twentieth-century Civil Rights struggle, all to her life in the present. Her book is Fortune: How Race Broke My Family and the World—and How to Repair It All. Evan Rosa recently spoke with Lisa at length about how race broke her world and how she traced her family line back beyond the founding of America. And in continued celebration of Juneteenth and the Black joy which has transcended centuries of oppression, the Black history that deserves to be named and known, and the Black freedom which is real and yet still not fully realized and repaired—thanks for listening today friends. How to Buy Fortune: How Race Broke My Family and the World—and How to Repair It All:lisasharonharper.comOnline RetailersAbout Lisa Sharon HarperFrom Ferguson to New York, and from Germany to South Africa to Australia, Lisa Sharon Harper leads trainings that increase clergy and community leaders' capacity to organize people of faith toward a just world.
