Sex is one of those subjects that many people are afraid to openly discuss in public, let alone on TikTok for anyone to see, but some sexologists are stepping into this territory, making history, and going viral. In this episode, I talk with Jessica Cline, a board-certified sexologist, travel therapist, and "sexpert" influencer on TikTok, about embodying openness on the level of "the things I talk about with my friends, I put out there." She shares her story and philosophy on social media and talking about sex, and how that has allowed others to open up conversations and get support on topics that many people are afraid to bring up. She also shares how this openness has led to a booming career with many opportunities to work with major brands, projects, and celebrities. More about Jessica (phased by her in the most perfect way): I'm a double board-certified sexologist—yes, that's a real job and a degree.

Today Amber discusses something that plagues so many women over 40, and that is emotional eating. She breaks down the two most common reasons why women have a hard time staying consistent with their nutrition. The first is that you may have a problem with falling off the wagon time and time again. You can't stay consistent when you get so caught up in staying perfect and adhering to unrealistic rules. This sets you up for failure because diets were never meant for the long term! The second is fixating on nutrition and fitness. This doesn't mean forgetting those things, but doing nothing to change habits, emotions, changing limiting beliefs, etc., won't help you to maintain who you want to become. When there's no foundation to maintain the goals you've reached, and life gets in the way, you fall right back off the wagon again. Amber focuses on emotional eating and what it looks like and the reasons behind it. Foods can be comforting and can be associated with fond memories. She goes on to explain that there are different levels of emotional eating and some can be ok at times while others can have a major negative impact on the body. More important than the frequency or the amount of eating, ask yourself what the intention is behind the emotional eating? Amber shares her tips to begin implementing change into your eating habits and get in the right direction. Look at the origin story. Where did this come from? Can I understand it enough to forgive myself? Being aware and forgiving yourself for your mistakes is crucial to progress. Second, discern whether you are emotionally eating or if you are actually hungry. Before reaching for an unhealthy snack, take the “hunger” out of it and eat a healthy snack so you can evaluate your emotions. Lastly, use simple coping mechanisms such as breathing, meditation, friends to call or talk to, playlists of songs that pump you up, etc. Tune in for more on these tips on how to take control of your eating habits! Key Highlights: Emotional eating when you aren't actually hungry The importance of finding the intention behind emotional eating No diets will work because they don't address the main issue at hand Episode resources:  Get the Beauty & Gut Collagen+ by MindBodyGreen by going to this link: MindBodyGreen and using CODE: wellnessrevolution15  Amber's free intermittent fasting guide: ambershaw.com/fasting About Amber Shaw Amber is a Body Transformation Expert, Founder of The Wellness Revolution, motivational speaker, and NBC Health and Wellness Coach. Does that mean you're doing something wrong?   If you've ever asked yourself this question, then you're going to LOVE my conversation with Heather. We both got super candid on why business isn't always rainbows and sunshine…and what to do when you're facing burnout.   We chatted about: Knowing where to focus your marketing efforts How burnout is related to people who aren't feeling free and searching for something outside of themselves Why we get to the point of burnout Our beliefs around manifesting (we drop some tough love here)   About Heather: Heather is a TEDx Speaker, Author of Dying To Be A Good Mother and host of a highly loved Podcast “Emotionally Uncomfortable” with over 6 million downloads. Heather Chauvin is a leadership coach who helps ‘successful' women who are ready to courageously and authentically live, work and parent on their own terms. Heather started her career as a social worker helping adults understand children's behavior. But it wasn't until her stage 4 cancer diagnosis in 2013 that pushed her to take a deeper stand for change, uncovering how cultural expectations sabotage our dreams. She has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Real Simple Magazine, Mind Body Green, Google and more. When Heather isn't working, you will find her living out what she teaches which may include kayaking Alaska, hiking, or anything else that challenges what she believes is possible for herself (and inviting her children along the journey). The 4 Common Roadblocks For New Coaches In this solo episode, I talked about the 4 most common roadblocks I've seen get in the way of new coaches getting traction and momentum when starting a coaching business. Whether you're a coach, a creative, or an entrepreneur, you'll probably identify with these roadblocks in your own career as well. After a decade of coaching leaders and entrepreneurs and teaching the art and skill of coaching to hundreds of students, and in my own coaching journey, I know what can get in the way of making a greater impact and growing your business. In this week's episode, I'm pulling the curtain back on the four things to watch out for so that they don't stop you from being your You-est You when starting a coaching business or entrepreneurial endeavor. You Don't Have To Have It All Together Ok, my friend, let's just get something straight. We are never going to have it all figured out. Life will never be perfect, and no matter how much personal growth work you do, you will not always have it all together. And that's ok. Don't let this be a reason that stops you from feeling like you can start a coaching business and be a mentor to others. One of the secrets is that as a coach, it's never about you anyhow. In fact, what you are is an expert at learning how to listen at a deep level to help your client accomplish and align with their greatest desires and goals. In essence, you are helping them to be their best self or "You-est You." Don't let the trap of thinking you have to be perfect or have your life working perfectly get in the way of your coaching and making a greater impact. I shared a few tips on how to put this fear to bed.  Don't Downplay Your Worth It's easy, especially for newer coaches, to get cold feet when discussing pricing and money. This is one of the reasons I believe it's crucial for coaches to invest their personal resources, time, and money in being coached. You have to know at a deep, cellular level the power of coaching. I worked with a coach years ago who literally changed my life with one powerful question. That question, and life pivot, was the impetus for my return to school to get a master's degree in coaching and integrative wellbeing. While I strongly believe in being certified and trained in this work since it is not as easy as it seems and is not about giving advice, being an expert or a cheerleader, you need to value yourself and the training you did receive. By undercharging, you end up undervaluing your services and the value of this work. I share a few ways to shift your belief and own your worth when starting a coaching business so you overcome that roadblock and can make a greater impact.    Overcoming The Fear of Visibility A big roadblock I often see is the discomfort with being seen and putting yourself out there, be it through sending emails, sharing on social media, or any kind of marketing. The secret is becoming so in love with your 'why' that it supersedes any other fear of visibility. One of the ways to do this is to ask yourself this three-part question: Why is being a coach important to you, those you're here to support and serve, and the world? Get clear on your why, put it on your favorite post-it wall or in your phone reminders, and marry your why. Putting yourself out there, and making yourself visible leads to making a greater impact. The two go hand in hand.  Rebuilding Your Confidence The best and most important way to build and expand your confidence as a coach is...wait for it...coaching! You need to continue practicing your craft and coaching as much as possible to utilize your coaching skills & training and boost your experience. When starting a coaching business, you must realize it takes time to build mastery. Don't let being a new coach, or being out of practice, get in the way of your taking action to find new clients to coach. Even if it means starting pro-bono or at a lower rate as you rebuild your confidence muscle, the important thing is to get out there and share with your peers, friends, and community that you are eager to coach and support clients to design and live their best life. The more you coach, the more confidence you'll have in knowing that this is miracle work and that it is just one less roadblock you have to overcome. Don't ever forget that as a coach, you are in the miracle business, and I can't imagine a better time for more miracles.  Final Thought Starting a coaching business can seem overwhelming. You might feel there are too many roadblocks keeping you from being the great success you dream of. But following these four pieces of advice will help you gain confidence in moving forward so you can get visible and make a greater impact.     How To Become A Life Coach with Julie If you are thinking of becoming a life coach or want to refine your skills and build your confidence as a coach, learn more about Julie's Life Designer Coach Academy certification program. TWR 099: How to Break Up with the Scale

The Wellness Revolution Podcast with Amber Shaw

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2022 25:32

In this episode, Amber shares great tips on how to shift your mindset and finally break up with the scale and not let the 3-digit number dictate how you will feel for the rest of the day. It's really interesting how the number on the scale can impact the emotional estate of those looking for fat loss goals. Suddenly, your weight is no longer data to analyze; it becomes a piece of evidence that you're not working hard enough, right? What most people don't know, however, is that the number on the scale can be influenced by many and many variables: if you had a good night of sleep, if you had enough water the day before, if you had an intense workout that morning, if you are fasted of had a big meal moments before. All of these factors impact your weight at that specific moment. So, why do we feel so ‘emotionally hijacked' by the scale to the point that it can influence our self-worth and self-image? For many years the scale has been a symbol for both fat loss and muscle gain goals. But other aspects – non-scale aspects – can also tell if you are succeeding: your clothes fit differently, you're looking different in the mirror, people are noticing changes, etc. Not to mention the specifics of fat loss vs. weight loss. There's a thing called body recomposition that can help explain why the number on the scale is not going down (you might be changing fat for muscle mass). Tune in to listen to the whole episode and learn how to quit the scale obsession! Key Highlights Why do we let the number on the scale dictate our self-worth? During your fat loss goal, it's more than important to break up with the scale instead of being obsessed about it; For many years traditional medicine has been using the scale to provide data (health markers) for patients. The problem is that the scale has no longer become data and is now a tool for self-sabotage; Once you let the scale go, start celebrating your non-scale victories (there are many of them), and start dissociating your emotion with it, your life improves; Allow yourself to check in with yourself instead of letting an external circumstance (the scale) tell you that; Ask yourself: “Why do these numbers are so important to me?” Episode Resources Click here to join the FREE 2-day event on September 12th and 13th Get the Beauty & Gut Collagen+ by MindBodyGreen by going to this link: MindBodyGreen and using CODE: wellnessrevolution15    Connect with Amber Instagram: @msambershaw TikTok: @msambershaw Website: ambershaw.com

Yes! As human beings living in the chaotic modern society we live in, it's pretty common to suffer from mild anxiety. The symptoms vary from individual to individual but feelings of unease, difficulty relaxing, and excessive worrying are the baseline. Morning anxiety, however, can make the rest of the day unbearable so that's why it's important to pay special attention to it. In this episode, Amber talks about which tools have been helping her with her morning anxiety and which of these tools you can implement into your routine to combat your anxiety. It's important to be aware of how the body feels and give it what it needs, so all of these tips are adaptable. It's also fundamental to understand a little deeper how anxiety is directly correlated to hormones. Cortisol, which is the stress hormone, plays a huge role in this. Amber's tips will help you cope with morning anxiety and handle daily stress better, but each person should know what strategies fit best in their lives. Tune in to learn more! Key Highlights As we age, it's important to have tools to recognize what's going on with ourselves, and eventually, give the body what it needs; Cortisol is the stress hormone and melatonin can be considered the opposite of cortisol. Hormonal levels play a huge role in how the body is responding to daily situations; The night before is especially important to cope with morning anxiety. Settling down two hours before bed, reducing caffeine intake for the afternoon, and avoiding superficial light – like the one on your smartphone – are just a few of the measures you can take to have a better night of sleep. Welcome to this week's episode of Thyroid Strong where Darin Ingels, a licensed naturopathic physician, author, international speaker, and a leading authority on Lyme's disease, gives a detailed description of what Lyme's disease is, its origins and symptoms, and how it can lead to Hashimoto's. Key Takeaways Lyme's disease is a bacterial infection that can present itself with one hundred different symptoms making it difficult to diagnose. It is important to treat quickly if you find a tick on yourself. Darin Ingels ND shares where to send an engorged tick, where to get tested for Lyme's disease, and his long-term integrative treatment plan.  About Darin Ingels ND Dr. Darin Ingels ND is a licensed naturopathic physician, author, international speaker, and a leading authority on Lyme's disease. He too was diagnosed with Lyme's disease and suffered his own battle of debilitation until he found that proper diet, lifestyle management, and natural therapies worked with his body to heal instead of against it. He uses that same approach for his patients today. He has been featured in WebMD, Mind Body Green, Be Well Thrive Global, and also has a podcast, and is the author of the Lyme Solution, a five-year plan to fight the inflammatory autoimmune response and beat Lyme disease. What Lyme's Disease Is and What To Do First Lyme's disease is a slow-growing bacterial infection, often acquired from a deer tick. If bitten by a tick, gently lift it with a pair of tweezers and save the tick. Saving the tick allows the tick to be tested for various infections doctors can then look for in a blood test. Darin shares where to send a tick and where to get tested for Lyme's disease. Know that only 30% of bites from a lyme infected tick result in the classic bullseye rash. Lyme's Disease That Can Lead To Hashimoto's and How To Treat It Of the one hundred different symptoms Lyme's disease presents, an autoimmune response is likely. Darin Ingels' hierarchy of treatment starts with a good diet and gut foundation, testing for food sensitivities, and then discovering other possible triggers, such as toxins, environment, etc. Darin Ingels looks to repair the terrain of the body first, enabling cells to heal faster and for the long term. In This Episode What Lyme's disease is [2:15] The most notable symptoms of Lyme's disease [3:09] How Lyme's disease can lead to other issues, such as an autoimmune response like Hashimoto's [ 7:08] What to do first when bitten by a tick [9:28] Treatment for Lyme's disease [12:03] Food sensitivities with the Lone Star Tick [17:34] Most effective in treating Lyme's disease long term [20:41] Darin Ingels' hierarchy of what to treat first with Lyme's disease [26:11] How to start treating a leaky gut [27:42] Quotes “They call it the great imitator or the great mimic because it looks like a lot of different things. So unfortunately, it's one of these infections that often people miss, just because they might mistake it for something else.”  [3:00] “The big red flag is when we see a combination of arthritic symptoms with neurological symptoms. Again, there's very few things that cause people complaining about neuropathy or balance problems, coordination issues, and they've got joint pain or muscle pain. That's a big red flag for Lyme disease.” [4:30] “The CDC says that up to 80% of people who get bit by tick carry the rash, when you look at the research, the research suggest it's probably less than 46%. And those of us in clinical practice will argue is probably less than 20%.” [4:57] “Lyme is a major trigger for Hashimotos particular hypothyroidism. So you know, limes ability to disrupt your immune system is a major problem. And we see various autoimmune effects from Lyme disease, we think that a lot of chronic Lyme disease is actually not the infection, it's per se that's causing the problems, but it's actually the autoimmune effect.” [7:00] “It's what's unique to that person that gives us...

In this episode, Amber talks about how to deal with and handle different types of grief. Whether it's a relationship breakup, a divorce, or a death in the family, the grieving process can hit us hard. Our body does not differentiate pain so every trauma despite being different from one another, has similar effects on our behavior. It's also interesting to make a parallel between all these types of grief and the sense of loss we get from each one of them because we are indeed losing something (or someone) in our lives. There will be part of your life you will feel is missing, and that's ok. One of the most important things we can do for ourselves is to allow ourselves to go through the process – as a way of healing. The only way is through. To help you handle these difficult times, Amber shares a few tools that will help ease your mind. Acknowledging and accepting grief are the main steps, Amber says, and it's also important to remember that as time goes by, we all learn how to handle grief more easily. Tune in! Key Highlights We can feel grief in many ways and from many situations. When we talk about breakups, some abandonment issues can come to the surface as well; Our body doesn't differentiate pain; different traumas can cause similar reactions in the body and similar feelings of sadness; It's normal to go through the grieving process as a way of healing. We need to allow ourselves to go through this process in our own time; As time goes by you respond to trauma with more grace; Amber shares a few tools that might help you deal with grief; One of the easiest ways to handle grief is coming up with a mantra. One of Amber's favorites is that “we are exactly where we are supposed to be”. In this episode, Amber talks about how important it is to stop overcomplicating nutrition and try to make everything easier. On our health journey, it's really easy to pay attention to a lot of coaches, mentors, and influencers – especially on social media – and be bombarded with an absurd amount of tips, rules, and nutrition information. For that reason, you might have picked up all of them to finally stay on track and get results but the reality is you just made it more complicated. And it's not your fault: the diet culture makes everything more complicated. So, in this episode, Amber gives you an assignment: make a list of all the rules you think you need to follow to get results and cross out the ones that don't matter, or that are too unimportant to be effective, or that are too small. We need to be paying attention to the big dial-movers when it comes to losing weight (the ones that make sense). So before quitting carbs after 7 p.m. or being obsessive about sodium intake, for example, ask yourself: Did I drink enough water today? Am I consuming enough protein and veggies? This basic stuff is way more important than all the tips you gathered from other people alongside your journey. Being discerning about what's important and what's not is the first step to your health goals! Key Highlights Being bombarded with so much information about nutrition can make the whole process more complicated than it is; When it comes to weight loss goals start with the basics and stop focusing on what doesn't matter. This will increase your confidence and your daily consistency; Make an inventory of all the rules you follow to get results. Choose 3 Daily Nutritional Commitments (DNCs) to follow regularly. For example: stop being worried about supplements if you don't drink enough water. If you're having a hard time finding what's important and what's not, ask yourself: what makes sense? To follow your DNCs consistently, they need to be effortless, enjoyable, and effective. TLDL actionable takeaways: 1) Biggest non-food factors that contribute to stress: i) Chronic stress (and no, we don't mean the goal is to not HAVE stress, but to make sure you are balancing it with nervous system resetting practices like deep belly breathing). ii) Hormonal imbalances (both in men and women) iii) The WAY you are eating or drinking- for example, swallowing too much air when eating or drinking, eating too fast, etc 2) What the gut-brain connection ACTUALLY means: "there's a 'super highway' of communication between your gut and your brain" where your brain asks "is it SAFE for me to send blood flow to the gut to optimize digestion right now?". 3) Isabel's first line-of-defense tools for bloating you can practice on your own: i) 3-4 deep belly breathing (NOT puffing your chest out but actively puffing out your belly) a few times throughout your day and ESPECIALLY before eating ii) Regular BMs: for constipation people can try magnesium oxide or citrate, concentrated aloe vera, digestive bitters (herbs or foods/drinks like dandelion, coffee, arugula, dill, etc), self message, heating pads or even yoga twists. Hydration is also important here and Isabel recommends focusing on electrolytes like those in coconut water and vegetable juices iii) Avoid drinking through straws iv) Eat slowly and CHEW food WELL v) Avoid frequent consumption through aluminum cans (due to heavy metals which can add to toxic burden) 5) Common reasons for bloating you might find on a stool test: parasites, bacterial overgrowth, mold exposure, candida, H. pylori, low levels of digestive enzymes, etc. 6) You can also register for Isabel's new 6 week program The Bloat Free Blueprint, which opens for enrollment on September 12th! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/curious-women/support

In this episode Amber explains why achieving significant physical changes is less about getting every little detail right and more about consistently making a bunch of good choices—no matter how small they might be—over the long haul. It's true that, on our health and wellness journey, there is always more to learn, and a little more discipline gained over time makes a big difference. But that's exactly Amber's point: Transformations don't happen overnight! She reminds us in today's episode to not sweat the small stuff. In other words, refuse to get caught up in the weeds. It's when we get hung up on minutiae that paralysis holds us back from making progress. If there's anything we actually need to focus on, it's the fundamentals. Listen in as Amber reveals exactly what these big dial movers are and how you can optimize each of them in your own life! Key Highlights Sustainable change is not about perfection. It's about making consistent, incremental changes over time. Sleep is, hands down, the most important thing you can do for your body. If there was just one thing you can do to improve your nutrition today, it would be eating less packaged food. For women especially, strength training three-to-four days a week is the fastest way to see changes in your body. 30% of your daily calories in protein is a great rule of thumb. Dedicate every non-strength training day to restorative activity, whether it be yoga, a hike, or even just a walk in the park. It's not just a great approach to active rest, but restorative activities also aid in hormone balance because they counteract those hard training days in-between. To learn more about Julie and how she might support you on your You-est You journey, go to juliereisler.com. Your Self-Worth Is Not Negotiable This topic is near and dear to my heart. I struggled for years with a sense that I wasn't enough. I felt a lack of self-worth that affected all aspects of my life, including my body image and the way I saw myself. I'm here first off to remind you that your self-worth has nothing to do with what you do or your achievements. You are worthy because you are born. All of us are. You're inherently worthy. Period. 5 Ways To Increase Your Self-Worth Now that we've got that straight, I want to share with you the five ways I've found to help increase your self-worth. As always, take what resonates and leave the rest.    1. Say No More Often Yes, you heard me right. It might sound counterintuitive but say no more often! By learning to speak up for yourself, saying no and getting out of the people-pleasing rut, you're learning to feel ok saying no. When you say no, you allow yourself to make room for what is a full yes. This builds self-efficacy!   2. Be Impeccable with Your Words Be mindful and impeccable with your words. As Don Miguel Ruiz shares in his book (one of my absolute faves), The Four Agreements, you must be impeccable with your word. Here's the catch, be impeccable with the words you use towards and with yourself. Start to recognize, track and watch what you say to yourself. Watch what you say to others as well, and build real integrity with your words and actions. This builds confidence and self-worth.   3. Forgive Yourself Forgive Yourself is a practice that will allow you to release shame, guilt, regret, and feelings of 'not good enough'. Write a list of resentments you have with and towards yourself. Look at them as an observer and go deeper to see what was under each resentment and fear. Write about that fear and have compassion for yourself. You can't change the past, but you can change the present, which will change your future. This is not only helpful for building your worthiness but also healing for your mind and body.   4. Focus on Your Strengths Focus on your strengths rather than where you're falling short. It's so easy (thank you, 'negative bias') to feel like you're always coming up short, missing out, and comparing yourself to others. Rather than focusing on what's not working, aim your attention on your strengths. Write a list of your strengths. For example, some of your top strengths are creativity, empathy, kindness, writing, deep listening, and open-mindedness. Create a practice before the end of each day where you look at how you tapped into your strengths. What you focus on will expand and make you feel more and more self-worth.   5. Turn to a Higher Power Don't do your life alone. Take time every morning before answering texts and calls and checking your Instagram feed to connect to a source and power greater than yourself. Whether you call it the Divine Matrix, Infinite Intelligence, God, Goddess, The Universe, Source Energy, or Higher Power, find a way to anchor into this greater channel of wisdom, love, and light. I shared some practices I do to help me feel more connected to the Divine. Find what works for you and make this a mandatory practice. You will start to feel an increased sense of self-worth and a deeper relationship with Divine Order.  The World Is A Mirror Don't forget that the world is a mirror reflecting what you see within yourself. As you strengthen your sense of self-worth, you'll not only see this in others but it will be reflected back to you. The goal, of course, is not to need it reflected back by others but to cultivate this from within and with your Higher Power. Final Thoughts Here's to your remembering your worthiness and increasing your sense of self-worth! Side note, if you would like 1:1 mentorship and support and accountability to help increase your self-worth, feel free to reach out and set up a time to chat.
