Cardinals score on two pick-6's in win over Saints – Friday Morning Sports Update

News/Talk 94.9 WSJM

NFL – National Football League – Week 7 Last Night Arizona Cardinals 42, New Orleans Saints 34 Cardinals 42, Saints 34 – Cardinals use two pick-6s in first half to down Saints 42-34 Marco Wilson and Isaiah Simmons scored touchdowns on two pick-6s late in the first half and used that stunning change in momentum to lift the Arizona Cardinals over the New Orleans Saints 42-34. The Cardinals snapped an eight-game home losing streak that was the franchise’s longest since 1958. The game was tied at 14 when Saints quarterback Andy Dalton threw the game-changing interceptions on consecutive drives that were barely a minute apart just before halftime. Sunday Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys, 1:00 p.m.  Rock 107 WIRX 12:00 Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans, 1:00 p.m. Monday Chicago Bears at New England Patriots, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Cowboys QB Prescott says injury absence ending against Lions Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott says he will start Sunday at home against the Detroit Lions. Prescott’s return would end a five-game absence after he fractured his right thumb in a season-opening loss to Tampa Bay. Dallas went 4-1 with backup Cooper Rush, starting with a four-game winning streak. Prescott says he had a full workload as the first-team QB in practice. Dallas players are crediting Rush for keeping the club in contention. They also see Prescott as the “life source” of the team’s offense. NFL – 49ers acquire RB Christian McCaffrey from Panthers The San Francisco 49ers have acquired star running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers for a haul of draft picks. The Panthers announced the deal that sends McCaffrey back to the Bay Area where he starred in college at Stanford in Thursday night. They said it will be finalized when McCaffrey passes a physical. A person familiar with the deal said on condition of anonymity that the Panthers will receive picks in the second, third and fourth rounds of the 2023 draft, as well as a fifth-rounder in 2024. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – League Championship Series (best of 7) Yesterday Houston Astros 3, New York Yankees 2                                            (HOU leads 2-0) Astros 3, Yankees 2 – Bregman HR as Valdez, Astros edge Yankees 3-2, lead ALCS 2-0 Alex Bregman hit an early three-run homer, Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings and the Houston Astros edged the New York Yankees 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge just missed a two-run homer in the eighth when his drive was caught just in front of the short wall by right fielder Kyle Tucker. The ball would’ve landed in the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium, Statcast showed — with the roof open at Minute Maid Park, the wind might’ve knocked down Judge’s bid. The Astros improved to 5-0 this postseason. A night after Justin Verlander fanned 11 to begin the best-of-seven series, Bregman’s third-inning homer was all the offense Houston needed. The Astros improved to 5-0 this postseason. Tonight San Diego (Musgrove 10-7) at Philadelphia (Suarez 10-7), 7:37 p.m.      (Series tied 1-1) NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight Chicago Bulls at Washington Wizards, 7:00 p.m. San Antonio Spurs at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks, 7:30 p.m. NBA – AP source: Pistons’ Rob Murphy on leave due to investigation A person familiar with the situation said Detroit Pistons assistant general manager Rob Murphy was put on leave due to an investigation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday night on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. ESPN reported that Murphy is facing an allegation of workplace misconduct involving a former female employee. Murphy was promoted to assistant general manager in June after serving as president and general manager of the G League’s Motor City Cruise. The former Syracuse and Kent State assistant was Eastern Michigan’s basketball coach from 2011 to 2021. NHL – National Hockey League Tonight Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. NCAAFB – College Football – Week 8 Saturday Bowling Green at Central Michigan, 1:00 p.m. Eastern Michigan at Ball State, 2:00 p.m. UNLV at Notre Dame, 2:30 p.m. Western Michigan at Miami (Ohio), 3:30 p.m. Michigan, Michigan State are off this weekend NCAAFB – CFP expansion ‘not finished,’ still working toward 12 in ’24 The third in-person meeting of conference commissioners who manage the College Football Playoff since August ended without a resolution on expansion, but not without optimism. The CFP management committee, comprised of 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, met for six hours. They worked on a plan to triple the number of playoff teams from four to 12 for the 2024 season. Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock says the work is ‘not finished’ and that time is running short. NCAAFB – Concussion lawsuit against NCAA could be first to reach jury A Los Angeles jury could be the first in the U.S. to decide whether the NCAA failed to protect college football players from repeated blows to the head that cause serious brain injuries. A jury was seated Thursday in a Los Angeles courtroom in the case of a former University of Southern California linebacker who had significant brain damage when he died at age 49. The widow of Matt Gee, who was on the 1990 Rose Bowl winning squad, is suing the NCAA for wrongful death. The NCAA says it had nothing to do with Gee’s death and his mental decline was from years of hard drinking. Hundreds of similar cases are pending against the NCAA. NCAAVB – Wisconsin female athletes notify police over private photos University of Wisconsin police are investigating how private photos and video of members of the school’s national champion women’s volleyball team got circulated publicly without their consent. Wisconsin’s athletic department says players contacted campus police after they became aware the photos had been made public. The volleyball players aren’t being investigated for wrongdoing. University of Wisconsin police spokesman Marc Lovicott confirmed the investigation, but details are not being disclosed. Olympics – Olympic officials talk with 10 bidders for 2036 Summer Games The International Olympic Committee says it’s in talks with 10 potential candidates to host a future Summer Games. Interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics has been expressed by officials in countries including Egypt, England, India, Indonesia and Qatar. IOC director general Christophe de Kepper did not identify any of the 10 projects addressing the Association of National Olympic Committees meeting in Seoul, South Korea. The 2036 Olympics is the next Summer Games available to be awarded in a mostly secretive process led by the IOC. It seeks to avoid both expensive public campaigning and a vote contested by multiple candidates. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs Last Night ALDS – Best of 5 New York Yankees 5, Cleveland Guardians 1                              (NYY wins 3-2) Yankees 5, Guardians 1 – Stanton, Judge HR, Yankees beat Guards, into ALCS vs Astros Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge staggered Cleveland with early homers, and the New York Yankees rocked past the Guardians 5-1 in the decisive Game 5 of their AL Division Series to set up another rematch with Houston for the pennant. Yankees manager Aaron Boone won his gamble by starting Nestor Cortes on three days’ rest over Jameson Taillon, making the late switch after Monday night’s rainout. Cleveland starter Aaron Civale struggled. With two on and two outs in the ninth and ace Gerrit Cole warming up in case, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres stepped on the bag to end it, then mimicked rocking a baby with the ball — a jab at Guardians slugger Josh Naylor, who made the motion rounding the bases after a homer off Cole in Game 4. NLCS – Best of 7 Philadelphia Phillies 2, San Diego Padres 0                                       (PHI leads 1-0) Phillies 2, Padres 0 – Harper, Schwarber HR as Wheeler, Phils top Pads to open NLCS Bryce Harper homered again, Kyle Schwarber hit a jaw-dropping, 488-foot drive and Zack Wheeler was brilliant in throwing one-hit ball for seven innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the San Diego Padres 2-0 in the opening game of the all-wild card NL Championship Series. Wheeler and two relievers combined on a one-hitter for the Phillies, who will try to take a 2-0 lead when they send Aaron Nola to mound to oppose Blake Snell on Wednesday afternoon. Harper homered in his third straight playoff game. Today League Championship Series – Best of 7 Philadelphia (Nola 11-13) at San Diego (Snell 8-10), 4:35 p.m.             (PHI leads 1-0) New York (Taillon 14-5) at Houston (Verlander 18-4), 7:37 p.m.           (Game 1) NBA – National Basketball Association – Regular Season Openers Last Night Boston Celtics 126, Philadelphia 76ers 117 Golden State Warriors 123, Los Angeles Lakers 109 Celtics 126, Sixers 117 – Tatum, Brown each score 35, Celtics beat 76ers 126-117 Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each scored 35 points and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 126-117 in the opening game of the NBA regular season. Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points and Grant Williams finished with 15 as the defending Eastern Conference champions gave interim coach Joe Mazzulla a victory in his debut. James Harden had 35 points — his most since joining the 76ers last season — including 12 of 12 from the free throw line. He also had five 3s. Joel Embiid added 26 points and 15 rebounds. Tyrese Maxey finished with 21 points. Warriors 123, Lakers 109 – Stephen Curry, Warriors celebrate championship, beat Lakers Stephen Curry opened the season with 33 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and the Golden State Warriors beat LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers 123-109 after receiving their championship rings in a pregame ceremony. Jordan Poole made a pretty bounce pass assist to a driving Draymond Green for a layup and all seemed perfectly well with the defending champions almost two weeks after Green punched Poole at practice Oct. 5 then took a brief leave of absence from the team to work on his emotions. Poole wound up with 12 points and seven assists. Tonight Orlando Magic at Detroit Pistons, 7:00 p.m. Washington Wizards at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat, 7:30 p.m. NBA/WNBA – Stephen Curry offers Warriors’ support of Brittney Griner Stephen Curry took the microphone in the middle of Golden State’s championship ring ceremony Tuesday night to make an impassioned plea in support of Brittney Griner as the WNBA star spent her 32nd birthday in a Russian prison. The Warriors, long committed to social issues far beyond basketball, celebrated their fourth championship in eight years. Griner is awaiting a hearing in Russia later this month for her appeal of a nine-year prison sentence for drug possession. NFL – Colts owner Irsay says there’s "merit to remove" Snyder Colts owner Jim Irsay says there’s “merit to remove” Dan Snyder as owner of the Washington Commanders. Irsay is the first NFL owner to publicly state that his controversial counterpart should go. Snyder’s status has been widely debated for years amid several scandals and investigations into workplace conduct in Washington. The league has been investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and financial impropriety, a probe conducted by attorney Mary Jo White that is ongoing. Removing Snyder would requires 24 votes from the other owners. NFL – NFL says it’s not backing down on protecting quarterbacks The NFL isn’t backing down on protecting quarterbacks. League executive Troy Vincent said there was a healthy and spirited conversation with owners about roughing-the-passer penalties at the league’s fall meeting. A pair of disputed roughing penalties in Week 5 frustrated defensive players and had players, coaches and fans questioning what constitutes a legal hit. NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay said the conversation on making roughing-the-passer calls reviewable lasted about 30 seconds and needs more discussion. NFL – Prime Video will add Black Friday game to NFL package in ’23 The NFL has announced that Amazon Prime Video will stream a game on Black Friday beginning next season. The game will take place on Nov. 24, 2023, and will kick off at 3 p.m. ET. The teams will be announced in early May when the regular-season schedule is expected to be released. Prime Video is in its first season as the exclusive carrier of “Thursday Night Football” and will expand to 16 games next season. The package goes through the 2033 season. NFL – Bears waive backup receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette The Chicago Bears have waived receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette. Smith-Marsette got his first significant playing time in the offense in Chicago’s 29-22 loss at Minnesota two weeks ago and committed two costly mistakes. He had the ball taken away from behind by Cameron Dantzler at the Vikings 39 following a reception on the Bears’ final drive to decide the game. He also got flagged for an illegal block from behind on a 52-yard scramble by quarterback Justin Fields, negating a TD.   NHL – Bettman: NHL salary cap may get nice bump for ’23-24 season The NHL salary cap could be going up more than expected sooner than expected. Commissioner Gary Bettman says there’s a chance players could be finished paying off what they owe owners from pandemic revenue losses as soon as this season. That would mean the cap going up $4 million or more next summer after being mostly flat for several years. Bettman expects the players’ debt to certainly be paid off next season, allowing for a significant cap increase going into 2023-24. The cap has only gone up $1 million to $82.5 million since the pandemic began.  NHL – NHL, its workforce 84% white, sets baseline to up diversity The NHL for the first time has done an internal demographic study of its staff and all 32 teams. The results suggest hockey has a lot of work to do to increase diversity. It found that 83.6% of the NHL’s workforce is white and that men make up nearly 62% of the total. That mirrors the situation on the ice. More than 90% of players and nearly all coaches and officials are white. NHL executive Kim Davis called the study a good start and a baseline from which the league can improve. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Ohio State, Michigan making Big Ten look like Big Two Ohio State and Michigan are making the Big Ten look like the Big Two, rekindling memories or some of Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler turning the chase for a conference championship into a two-team race. The second-ranked Buckeyes and fourth-ranked Wolverines are the Big Ten’s only undefeated teams. No other team in the conference is ranked among the top 15. Penn State can potentially be a factor in the because it hosts Ohio State on Oct. 29. The 16th-ranked Nittany Lions will have to play much better than they did while getting pummeled at Michigan. NCAAWBKB – South Carolina women unanimous No. 1 in preseason AP Top 25 South Carolina is the unanimous No. 1 team in the preseason AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll. The defending national champions went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team last year and have been the top team for 20 straight weeks. Stanford, Texas, Iowa and Tennessee round out the top five. UConn is sixth, the first time since 2006 that the Huskies aren’t in the first five in the preseason poll. Louisville, Iowa State, Notre Dame and N.C. State is the rest of the top 10. NASCAR – NASCAR suspends Bubba Wallace 1 race for Las Vegas crash NASCAR has suspended driver Bubba Wallace for one race following his fracas at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend. NASCAR determined that Wallace deliberately spun reigning champion Kyle Larson in a dangerous move of retaliation. Wallace will miss Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Golf – PGA – Elevated events show a divide among PGA Tour events for ’23 A person with direct knowledge of the plans says the PGA Tour is announcing that four tournaments will have elevated status and $20 million purses next year. The four additions are the WM Phoenix Open, the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, the Wells Fargo Championship and the Travelers Championship. That leads to an incredibly crowded schedule. Texas-born Jordan Spieth figures to play five straight weeks in May and seven out of eight weeks. And that includes two majors. Two of the events are the week after a major. Not since Tiger Woods in 2006 has someone won a tournament the week after winning a major. Victor Reyes and Willi Castro each drove in two runs while Kody Clemens and Harold Castro each drove in one with two out in the bottom of the fifth. All six runs were charged to Logan Webb, who was pulled after Harold Castro’s single made it 4-0. White Sox 5, Orioles 3 – Giolito, Sheets lift White Sox to 5-3 win over Orioles  Lucas Giolito pitched impressively into the seventh inning, Gavin Sheets twice came through with the bases loaded and Yoán Moncada pulled off a slick double play to help the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Giolito allowed one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Then Kendall Graveman was helped out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh thanks to Moncada’s play at third. The bases were loaded with one out and Chicago up 3-1. Moncada lunged to his right to snag a grounder. Then he touched third for the force and threw to first to complete the play. Cubs 7, Cardinals 1 – Zach McKinstry homers as Cubs beat Cardinals 7-1 Zach McKinstry homered and drove in three runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1. Nico Hoerner had three hits for Chicago, and Yan Gomes added two RBIs. Rowan Wick got five outs for the win, leading a solid performance by the Cubs bullpen. Lars Nootbaar homered for NL Central-leading St. Louis, and Corey Dickerson went 4 for 4. The Cardinals dropped to 17-5 in August. Today St. Louis (Hudson 6-6) at Chicago Cubs (Stroman 3-5), 2:20 p.m. Chicago White Sox (Lynn 3-5) at Baltimore (Lyles 9-9), 7:05 p.m. Tigers are off MLB – MLB teams to play all 29 opponents under ’23 balanced sked Every Major League Baseball team will play each other in the same season for the first time next year as the sport switches to its first balanced schedule since 2000. As a result of the format switch agreed to in the March lockout settlement, high-profile games between division rivals such as Yankees-Red Sox, Dodgers-Giants and Cubs-Cardinals will be reduced from 19 and intradivision games will drop from 47% to 32%. A team will host all of the other 29 clubs at least once every two seasons. The season opens March 30 with all teams scheduled. NBA – Kobe Bryant widow awarded $16M in trial over crash photos A federal jury has found that Los Angeles County must pay Kobe Bryant’s widow $16 million for emotional distress caused by deputies and firefighters sharing photos of the bodies of the NBA star and his daughter taken at the site of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed them. The jurors who returned the verdict Wednesday agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that her privacy was invaded when they took and shared photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and their 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during the 11-day trial that news of the photos compounded her grief after losing her husband and daughter. County attorneys argued that the photos were necessary to assess the scene. NCAASB – Michigan’s Hutchins retires as NCAA softball victory leader Carol Hutchins has retired after 38 seasons as Michigan’s softball coach after winning a record number of games. The school made the announcement Wednesday, signaling the end of a career that included 1,707 wins. Bonnie Tholl was promoted to lead the program after she serving as Hutchins’ top assistant for 29 years. Hutchins won a national title in 2005 and led the Wolverines to the NCAA championship game in 2015. She won 22 Big Ten regular-season titles, 10 conference tournament championships and never had a losing season. NFL – National Football League – Preseason week 3 Tonight Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs, 8:00 p.m. San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Hall of Fame Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson dies at 87 Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title, died Wednesday. The MVP of the Chiefs’ victory over the Vikings in January 1970 had been in declining health for years. He entered hospice care on Aug. 12. “Lenny the Cool” went into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1987. He also was inducted as a broadcaster in 2012. Dawson spent several decades working on local TV and radio broadcasts while also doing color analysis for NBC and hosting HBO’s iconic "Inside the NFL.” The Chiefs intend to honor him during their preseason finale against Green Bay on Thursday night. Len Dawson was 87. NFL – Lions Preview – Lions may have double digits in losses for 5th year in a row The Detroit Lions seem destined for another rough season. If the defense struggles, it will likely lead to at least 10 losses for the fifth straight year, and second in a row under coach Dan Campbell. Rookie defensive end Aiden Hutchinson appears to be a player to build around, but there isn’t much help behind him right now. The Lions should be able to move the ball and score behind a strong offensive line in Jared Goff’s second season with the team. The veteran quarterback is surrounded by an improved group of receivers, a solid duo of running backs and standout tight end T.J. Hockenson. NFL – Bears Preview – Bears enter new era, look to make jump under Poles, Eberflus The Chicago Bears are prepared to enter a new era under new general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. Chicago comes into the season with few established playmakers on offense and questions to answer on defense, starting with the opener against San Francisco on Sept. 11. The Bears went 6-11 last season and missed the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years. They are counting on quarterback Justin Fields to make big strides after a shaky rookie year. On defense, the Bears had an offseason contract standoff with star linebacker Roquan Smith that ended without a new deal. Golf – PGA – Top PGA Tour players to commit to 20-event big money slate The PGA Tour is making its boldest response yet to the rival Saudi-funded league. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has announced a plan for the best players to commit to a 20-tournament schedule starting next year. That means they will be competing against one another up to 17 times and maybe more. That involves elevating four additional tournaments that will offer $20 million or more to go along with the tournaments already announced. Monahan says top players will be determined by a new Player Impact Program criteria. The PIP will double in money to $100 million. Golf – Woods, McIlroy behind tech-infused golf league in TV venture Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are bringing their own version of team golf to the PGA Tour. Woods and McIlroy are part of a new media group called TMRW (pronounced “tomorrow”) Sports. Former Golf Channel president Mike McCarley is the CEO. The first project is called TGL. It’s a tech-infused golf league that will feature six teams of three players for matches on Monday night. The broadcast partner hasn’t been announced. It will be played in a custom-built arena. The long shots will be using a simulator. The short shots will be live. The 18-hole matches take two hours. Are Christian fellowship and Christian conferencing the same or different things? Explore why the words fellowship and conferencing, which have come to mean very different things, are actually pointing to one of the essential means of grace for United Methodists. Christian Conferencing as a Means of Grace But first, a question: Who has impacted your life and leadership the most? For most of us, it's teachers, mentors, or coaches. People we've been in relationships with over a period of time. People who care deeply about us, about our well-being, growth, and becoming who God created us to be. Why that question? In this series, we've explored searching the scriptures, prayer, Holy Communion and fasting. This episode on Christian conferencing concludes the series. As we conclude the series, we end with the means of grace that is focused on faith-forming relationships. As you continue to read and listen to Episode 233, you'll notice we use Christian conferencing and fellowship interchangeably. Christian Fellowship Here's why: When John Wesley talked about Christian Conferencing he was using the verb confer. It was about Christians coming together to focus on their faith: to pray, share their experience of God, seek advice, offer counsel, confess their sins, and ask for forgiveness. With that reminder in place, it's easy to recognize that we can't participate in Christian conferencing alone. Second, God doesn't want us to do life alone. And third, when you experience Christian fellowship, you realize you don't ever want to do it alone. But it wasn't just John Wesley who talked about Christian conferencing. Let's look at the scripture for reminders there too. Biblical Basis for Christian Fellowship/Conferencing Genesis 1 - Adam and Eve are created to be in relationship with one another. Why? Because it's not good to be alone. Luke 6:12-16 As Jesus stepped into public ministry, he didn't do it alone. He chose 12 disciples to be with him on the journey. Acts 2 - The Spirit forms the church. Matthew 18:20  - Where two or three are gathered in my name, I'm there among them. John 13 - a new commandment I give to you that you love one another, just as I've loved you. You also are to love one another. John Wesley on Christian Conferencing For Wesley, Christian Conferencing was about relationships. Faith-fueled relationships. The conferencing wasn't a meeting. It wasn't about legislation. Christian conferencing to Wesley was about being held in love and prayer by the people who cared about you the most. He was confronted by the fact that he was inviting people into Christian conferencing. He said, “That which never existed cannot be destroyed. The real truth is just the reverse of this. We introduced Christian fellowship where it was utterly destroyed and the fruits of it have been peace, joy, love, and zeal for every good word and work.” -A Plain Account of the People Called Methodists Christian fellowship remind us of the importance of being together. And that is both on Sundays for worship and at regular intervals of Christian conferencing. If you don't have one of those, you're not getting fully formed in the faith. So in case it isn't clear Christian conferencing is about recognizing yourself as one of God's beloved among a group of God's beloved so that you might love one another.
