However, we can be severely mistaken if we think Bible knowledge equates to spiritual maturity. The Christian life starts with faith in Jesus. From there, we must grow in the knowledge of God's word and God's ways. It's essential to recognize that faith in God is not only the foundation of our salvation, but it's also fundamental to our spiritual growth. What makes God's promises so precious and magnificent? For one, they enable us to become partakers of the divine nature. Think of that!I sometimes hear believers say, "The only difference between me and an unbeliever is that I'm forgiven and they're not." I love huge trees.Full-grown oaks and sycamores are so majestic. And if you've never seen the giant redwoods in California, you must put this on your bucket list. These ancient trees project strength, stability, and perseverance. They didn't achieve their greatness overnight; these granddaddies were planted long ago and have endured acts of nature that would have taken out lesser trees. Needless to say, these stately trees inspire me. God has equipped us with all the spiritual armor we need in order to prevail over our spiritual enemies. From the first piece of that armor (girding our loins with truth) to the last (the sword of the Spirit -- the word of God), we see the importance of truth. Our enemy is a liar and a deceiver. We are of the truth. Here's some good news: Truth wins the battle. Knowing this is how I can be so bold and confident when I'm challenged by skeptics on campus; I'm supremely confident that I'm on the winning side -- the side of truth.But even though we have the truth, it seems the side of deceit and deception often wins the day. Have you ever been surprised to discover someone who you thought would have no interest in God, actually was quite interested? This happens to me fairly often. Our Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace, wants us to experience peace with God. He also wants to give us inner, personal peace. But He also wants us to be at peace with others.These are incredible blessings -- peace with God, with ourselves, and with others. I've found they tend to work together. When we first have peace with God, we can then have peace within ourselves, which makes it much easier to have peace with others. The desire to pay back someone who's done you wrong can be intense. Some people have been hurt so badly that they are obsessed with revenge. One of the most radical ways life in God's kingdom differs from life in the domain of darkness is how we treat one another. Human societies develop a pecking order that establishes a hierarchy of status. It's human nature. It happens in every society.Some cultural and political movements seek to do away with these hierarchies. Karl Marx, with his theories of communism, is most notable in this effort.
