In this special Christmas-themed episode of the Leadership Blueprints podcast, host BJ Kraemer draws on some of his favorite classic Christmas films to explore the art and science of leading oneself and others. Ebenezer Scrooge sparks a conversation around awareness and change, while Kevin McAllister offers a surprising lens on ownership and responsibility. A nod to It's a Wonderful Life serves as a quiet reminder of the power of relationships. The episode also explores what it means to help others grow into the roles they're called to step into, and concludes with Clark Griswold as a timely reflection on how unchecked vision can impact those around us. Join BJ for another episode filled with valuable leadership insights! Happy Holidays! Key Points From This Episode:The leadership lesson from Ebenezer Scrooge: transformation after self-awareness.How Kevin McAllister shows that ownership drives creativity. It's a Wonderful Life: “No man is a failure who has friends.”Leadership is about cultivating potential by giving people the opportunity to grow into who the role requires them to become. The lesson from Clark Griswald: vision without awareness can exhaust everyone around you. Quotes:“Transformation is possible, but like I've talked about before, only after self-awareness.” — BJ Kraemer “When people truly own outcomes, they rise faster than we expect.” — BJ Kraemer “[George Bailey] teaches us that the most meaningful impact is often invisible when you're living through it.” — BJ Kraemer “Good intentions don't excuse poor awareness.” — BJ Kraemer “I talk a lot about the first step in leadership is leading yourself first, and the first step in leading yourself first is getting clear on who you are, who you aren't, what your strengths are, what they're not. And I think the lesson we can all take away from Scrooge McDuck is results without humanity create financial success, but no relationship success and no legacy.” — BJ Kraemer Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Mickey's Christmas Carol (Disney+)A Christmas CarolHome AloneHome Alone 2It's a Wonderful Life (Apple TV)The Santa Clause (Disney+)National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Netflix)Leadership Blueprints PodcastMCFAMCFA CareersBJ Kraemer on LinkedIn

This podcast episode delves into the historical significance of the 1921 San Diego East West Christmas Classic, an intriguing yet ephemeral football game that epitomizes the intersection of sport and holiday spirit. We engage with Timothy P. Brown from FootballArchaeology.com, who elucidates the context surrounding this unique event, which featured Center College, known as the Praying Colonels, facing off against a then lesser-known Arizona team. Despite inclement weather that plagued the days preceding the game, leading to a lackluster crowd and challenging playing conditions, the Praying Colonels emerged victorious with a decisive score of 35 to 0. The narrative not only highlights the athletic prowess of the players involved, particularly the notable quarterback Bo McMillan, but also offers a glimpse into the historical landscape of college football during the early 1920s. Join us as we explore this captivating tale that enriches our understanding of football's storied past during the festive season. The Lost Bowl Game: When Centre College Beat the Rain in the 1921 Christmas ClassicA Bowl Game BoomIn the 1920s, cities across America tried to launch their own annual bowl games, hoping to replicate the success of the Rose Bowl. One such event was the short-lived San Diego East-West Christmas Classic, which ran for just two years. The 1921 edition featured one of the most remarkable small-college teams in history: the Centre College Praying Colonels, who traveled west to face the University of Arizona Wildcats. This was no ordinary contest; it was a battle against the elements and an insurance policy. The Praying Colonels' Giant SeasonCenter College, a tiny institution with only 247 students, boasted a legendary season leading up to the holiday clash. Coached by Charlie Moran and led by star quarterback Bo McMillan, the Praying Colonels were 9-0, having earned national renown by slaying giants like Clemson, Virginia Tech, Auburn, and, most famously, the undefeated Harvard Crimson. They arrived in San Diego expected to dominate, but the weather had other ideas. The usually sunny city was drenched. It had rained for eight straight days before Christmas Day, and the rain continued to fall right through kickoff. The playing field at Balboa Stadium was a swamp, with standing water turning the event into a muddy mess. Attendance was predictably sparse—a disaster for the promoters.Played for the PolicyThe organizers, however, had foresight and insured the game against poor weather. The catch? They could only collect the insurance payout if they actually played the game. Thus, the classic went on, not for the fans, but for the balance sheet. Center College, unfazed by the conditions, showcased their class. McMillan guided his team through the slop, leading the Colonels to a decisive 35-0 victory. The high score was remarkable, especially considering the waterlogged ball made the kicking game virtually impossible.Legacy in the MudWhile the San Diego Christmas Classic failed to survive past 1922 (when West Virginia beat Gonzaga), the 1921 edition is a testament to the grit and determination of a small-college powerhouse. It perfectly encapsulates the early, often chaotic days of college football, where an incredible team, a soaking field, and an insurance claim converged to create a unique holiday memory. The game is forever tied to the legend of Bo McMillan and the last great chapter of the Praying Colonels' dynasty. This is based on Tim Brown's original Tidbit titled: The 1921 San Diego East-West Christmas Classic Join us at the Pigskin Dispatch website to see even more Positive football news! Yet, every holiday season, we flock to our favourites that we believe symbolizes the season. But are they REALLY worthy of the title of 'Christmas movie'? This week, Heather Johnson returns to delve into the heart of holiday films, trying to figure out what defines them and which Christmas favourites are really made of coal.

Andy opens the show reacting to a wild on-air moment that unfolded during a Philadelphia Flyers radio broadcast, proving that live radio can still go completely off the rails when you least expect it. He then plays what might be the worst Christmas song ever made and asks the bigger question: outside of Wham and Mariah Carey, are there any modern Christmas songs that truly qualify as classics — and what does it actually take to write a holiday song that lasts for generations? The hour takes a darker turn as Andy digs into the latest Epstein file release, playing audio from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and questioning how transparent a release can really be when pages are heavily redacted or completely blank. He compares the rollout to something straight out of Eyes Wide Shut before wrapping things up on a lighter (and wildly expensive) note: someone spent $7 million to build a full-scale replica of the iconic Home Alone house.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now I have another reason to hate Christmas. In a world where one man has only seen 30 or so movies comes a desire to learn from a master. A master of film. A master of cinema. A master who has led such a sad life.  Logan seeks the knowledge and he turns to his own personal “Yoda”; Keithie. Join Logan & Keithie on a wild adventure to discover as we watch along with a new movie each episode in THE MOVIE EDUCATION OF LOGAN CROSLAND. This episode, Logan, Keithie & Tim ring in the holiday season with the 1984 Christmas Classic (?), Gremlins. The incomparable Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Frances Lee McCain and cameos from Judge Reinhold, Corey Feldman and an amazing Polly Holliday star in this blockbuster about little green things and one really cute Mogwai. Is this a Christmas movie just because there is a Christmas tree and Christmas Carolers? We think so. So please, if your air conditioner goes on the fritz or your washing machine blows up or your video recorder conks out; before you call the repairman, turn on all the lights, check all the closets and cupboards, look under all the beds, 'cause you never can tell --there just might be a Logan Crosland in your house.

Eggnog is one of the strangest holiday traditions we have — a creamy mix of eggs, milk, spices, and often a splash of rum. Yet people look forward to it every December. Where did this unusual drink come from, and how did it become tied so closely to Christmas? We start with the surprising history behind this centuries-old holiday concoction. Source: https://time.com/3957265/history-of-eggnog/ Chances are you have a favorite Christmas movie — White Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, or one of dozens of others that seem to define the season. Film historian Jeremy Arnold, in collaboration with Turner Classic Movies, has chronicled the backstories behind 30 beloved holiday films. He joins me to reveal the little-known details, production tales, and cultural trivia that shaped some of the most iconic Christmas movies ever made. He is author of Christmas in the Movies: 30 Classics To Celebrate the Season (https://amzn.to/3GzDZ3S). If you feel stuffed-up, sneezy, or irritated during the holidays, your Christmas tree may be the culprit. Real trees can carry mold spores and other irritants that trigger allergy-like symptoms.
