Brooklyn-based musical duo Charming Disaster was formed in 2012 by Ellia Bisker (of Sweet Soubrette and Funkrust Brass Band) and Jeff Morris (of Kotorino). Inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey, Charles Addams, and Tim Burton, the murder ballads of the Americana tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret, they write songs that tell stories about death, crime, myth, magic, science, and the occult. Charming Disaster's music has been featured on the podcast Welcome to Night Vale, they have toured the United States and Europe, and have opened for Rasputina, Aurelio Voltaire, and The Dresden Dolls. Recent appearances include Dragon Con, Joe's Pub at the Public Theatre in NYC, the Rochester Fringe Festival, and the Coney Island Sideshow stage. Their critically acclaimed albums include Love, Crime & Other Trouble (2015), Cautionary Tales (2017), Spells + Rituals (2019), Our Lady of Radium (2022), Super Natural History (2023), and the singles collection Time Ghost (2024). website www.CharmingDisaster.com  social media www.Instagram.com/charmingdisasterband www.Facebook.com/charmingdisaster  About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. Brooklyn-based goth-folk duo Charming Disaster's upcoming album The Double—their seventh full-length release—explores the world that exists behind the one we know, featuring songs inspired by nature, mortality, magic, ritual, and literary genres ranging from science fiction to Victorian horror. The new album was co-produced by band members Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris with longtime collaborator, recording engineer Don Godwin. All but one of the ten tracks were recorded at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD, with one song recorded by circus music composer Peter Bufano in Boston, MA. The Double will be released on CD, as a 12-inch colored vinyl LP, and on all digital platforms on May 16, 2025. The vinyl will be released in a 2-disc package that also includes Charming Disaster's 2024 compilation Time Ghost, a collection of singles released over the last decade.   The Double invites listeners to step across the border of an alternate reality, where spells are cast, time travel is possible, plants are taking over civilization, and vampires lurk in the shadows. Adventures in the darkness lie beyond the threshold.   The album's ten songs include “Black Locust,” a lullaby about mortality; “New Moon,” a magical nature ritual; “Trick of the Light,” a reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula; “Time Machine,” in which Charming Disaster change the past and start over again; “Scavengers,” a walk in the woods with vultures and bones; “Beautiful Night,” a defiant response to struggles with depression; “Vitriol,” a tribute to artist Thomas Little, who turns guns into ink; “Haunted Lighthouse,” a swashbuckling sea voyage; “Gang of Two,” a true crime adventure; and “Green Things,” a love letter to what grows between the cracks (and its inevitable takeover).   The album features an array of talented collaborators. Co-producer Don Godwin, who has worked on Charming Disaster's entire discography, contributed bass, drums, and horns as well as engineering and mixing. “Haunted Lighthouse” features Broadway percussionist Mike Dobson along with circus composer Peter Bufano, who played piano and accordion and engineered the track at Cirkestra World Headquarters in Boston, MA (with additional tracking at Tonal Park). “Scavengers” features cello recorded by Kate Wakefield of the duo Lung, who also created the string arrangement for “Beautiful Night.” Stefan Zeniuk of Gato Logo contributed saxophone to “Green Things.”   In conjunction with The Double, Charming Disaster is releasing the second edition of their “oracle deck” (similar to a Tarot deck). The Charming Disaster Oracle Deck contains 72 cards (including 12 new cards for the second edition), each representing one of the songs from Charming Disaster's discography. The cards feature illustrations commissioned from more than thirty different artists. The deck can be used as a divination tool, or as a visual accompaniment to Charming Disaster's music. The duo themselves use these cards in their live performances to determine the set through the element of chance.   Charming Disaster was formed by Bisker and Morris in 2012, inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the murder ballads of the American Folk tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret. Together the duo write songs that tell stories about myth, magic, and mortality, using two voices to explore dark narratives and characters with a playfully macabre sensibility.   On their critically acclaimed albums Love, Crime & Other Trouble (2015), Cautionary Tales (2017), and SPELLS + RITUALS (2019), Charming Disaster explored death, crime, folklore, and the occult. On Our Lady of Radium (2022), they turned their attention to science and explored the life and discoveries of pioneering scientist Marie Curie. On Super Natural History (2023), they united the natural world and the metaphysical realm in a musical cabinet of curiosities.   The duo put out two releases in 2024: Time Ghost, an album-length collection of songs released as singles between 2013 and 2024; and Dance Me to the End of Bela Lugosi's Lovesong, an EP of covers paying tribute to a few of the band's influences: Leonard Cohen's “Dance Me to the End of Love,” “Bela Lugosi's Dead” by Bauhaus, and The Cure's “Lovesong.”   In Charming Disaster's live shows, the duo combine vocal harmonies and clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, and foot percussion, with a cabaret-influenced performance style that straddles the line between concert and theatre and has been described as “haunted vaudeville” (Splice Magazine). Charming Disaster's music has been featured on the spooky hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale. They have opened for legendary cello-rock ensemble Rasputina, Goth icon Voltaire, and Amanda Palmer's punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. Their concerts have captivated audiences across the United States and in Europe. They have appeared alongside storytellers, comedians, fire eaters, puppets, burlesque artists, poets, and circus performers. Recent appearances have included Joe's Pub in NYC, Atlanta's massive pop culture convention Dragon Con, Brooklyn's historic Green-Wood Cemetery, the Rochester Fringe Festival, Philadelphia's Science History Institute, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, VA, Cleveland's WizbangCircus Theatre, and the Coney Island Sideshow stage, as well as sundry bars, art galleries, theatres, bookstores, libraries, train cars, mausoleums, and museums.   LINKS: Website: www.charmingdisaster.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/charmingdisaster Instagram: http://instagram.com/charmingdisasterband YouTube: http://youtube.com/charmingdisasterband Bandcamp: http://charmingdisaster.bandcamp.com Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/1RjkfhamohczSXjFy5WcZh   The Double preorder link: charmingdisaster.bandcamp.com/album/the-double     Tickets : Charming Disaster at The Foundry Cleveland June 5th with Cowboy Princess Brigade https://www.ticketweb.com/event/charming-disaster-cowboy-princess-brigade-the-foundry-tickets/14325923?utm_medium=affiliate&irgwc=1&clickid=yKYzFM2SwxycTOrRPc1Gt0d7UksRjjwhTXGA2E0&camefrom=CFC_BUYAT_219208&impradid=219208&REFERRAL_ID=tmfeedbuyat219208&wt.mc_id=aff_BUYAT_219208&utm_source=219208-Bandsintown&impradname=Bandsintown&ircid=4272   C-Level Pete Francis Tickets : https://www.ticketweb.com/event/peter-francis-of-dispatch-the-winchester-tickets/14338833?utm_source=AllEvents.in&utm_medium=event-discovery-platform&utm_campaign=lakewood-events

Send us a textRey Roldan stops by the podcast to talk about being Britney's Publicist, Interviewing Kurt Cobain, an interesting encounter with Bono, Fandom, and so much more.********Rey has seen a lot… and I mean A LOT. Twenty-six plus years as a publicist (since 1995) and a few years before that as a nationally published entertainment journalist, he's been around. Backstage, on the tour bus, in the hotel rooms, behind closed doors, in the conference room… he's witnessed almost all… but there's undoubtedly more that he hasn't seen.  But it hasn't shocked him. In fact, it's intrigued him… challenged him… and at times, offered myriad choices of how to react and how to process. And that's the thing… nothing shocks him. Starting his journey into the lion's den that is the music industry, he was a journalist for a number of newspapers, magazines, and regionals across the country (and one or two overseas). He's interviewed Kurt Cobain, U2, Joey Ramone, Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, Polly Jean Harvey… oh, and Vanilla Ice… While journalism was his passion, it didn't quite pay the bills, especially in Boston. So he moved to NYC and jumped into Publicity. IRS Records, Mammoth Records, Grass Records, Jive/Silvertone/Zomba, KSA Publicity/Press Here, Island Def Jam… He worked with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Duran Duran, Sting, Brooks & Dunn, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Juliana Hatfield, Diana Ross, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dresden Dolls, Charlotte Church, among hundreds of others.  He did the label (indie and major) and indie PR thing but he was burnt out on doing publicity like a pre-defined template that labels determined, so he left the corporate world to start his own shingle with a focus on building profiles and strategies that weren't constrained by hard, constrained blueprints. In 2004, Reybee Inc. was born. Instead of sticking to templates, he and his team of professionals craft unique strategies to build solid foundations and build up from there, creating campaigns that focus on constructing artist careers that go beyond. His campaigns go forward and sideways, and rarely backwards (unless, of course, we're talking retrospectives, which, in that case, they go backwards too).Nearly two decades later, it's still going strong… in fact, it keeps growing… and growing… and growing. Very rarely does a culty news topic compel us to the mic as urgently as this week's subject, a nerdy literature fandom turned…collective traumatic experience? In the wake of a bombshell Vulture exposé that straight-up reads like a Sounds Like A Cult script, Reese and Amanda are unpacking the nightmarish tale of multi-bestselling-author-turned-sex-abuser-slash-cult-leader, Neil Gaiman. You know this guy's work, even if you don't recognize his name, and the cult he created has so many entry points, if you are a lover of Coraline, American Gods, The Dresden Dolls, or a variety of viral Tumblr DM reply screenshots from @neil-gaiman, there's a chance you've skirted the edge of a few of them. We, along with the rest of the online book-nerd world, were flabbergasted by the release of Lila Shapiro's article “There is No Safe Word” revealing that underneath Gaiman's seemingly wholesome dynamic with his doting fans was a campaign of lovebombing, sexual assault, and bizarre rituals, involving the author's ex-wife Amanda Palmer and a history with the freaking church of Scientology. It's truly a heartbreaking, stranger-than-fiction story. Join Amanda and Reese, as they analyze it chapter by chapter.         P.S. While we for the most part try to keep things fairly lighthearted here at SLAC, this week's episode is obviously covering a genuinely dangerous individual, and therefore some very sensitive topics. This is a content warning to maybe skip this week's episode if the following are especially uncomfortable territory for you: sexual assault, emotional and verbal abuse, suicidal ideation, emotional abuse, abuse against LGBTQ+ individuals Subscribe to Sounds Like A Cult on Youtube! As Amanda's online presence increased, she always faced the extremes of responses, being both adored and hated. Oftentimes, the fear of being disliked stops people from putting themselves out there, and they discuss how to navigate the experience. They discuss how mindfulness supports the ability to be public. They have a shared realization that "you" are just a reflection for other people, and how both angry and loving comments are more about the person making them than about you. Amanda shares her experience of accepting help from wherever it comes from, and not being angry that it isn't coming from where it's “supposed to” come from. For more information about Amanda, visit: https://amandapalmer.net For more information on Luis' work, visit: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/Join the waitlist for the slow groups here:Embodied Practitioner groupEmbodied Masculinity group

Welcome to Weird Web Radio! I'm your host, Lonnie Scott! This episode features the amazing Goth Folk Music duo Charming Disaster! I promised both of them that this interview would be different from any other they experienced. Well, that promise held true! We chatted about their music, their history personal and professional, witchcraft, hauntings, monsters, and so much more! Charming Disaster - Ellia and Jeff - have a new Album called Supernatural History AND an Oracle Deck out! Please do go grab both! The Charming Disaster BIO: Brooklyn, NY-based musical duo Charming Disaster performs playfully dark original songs inspired by death, crime, myth, magic, science, and the occult, inspired by the macabre humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the murder ballads of the Americana tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret. In their live performances, they combine vocal harmonies and clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, and virtuosic foot percussion, drawing listeners into a haunting, offbeat universe of paranormal romance, con artists, circus tents, and ancient gods. Charming Disaster's music has been featured on the spooky hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale, they have opened for legendary cello-rock ensemble Rasputina, goth icon Voltaire, and Amanda Palmer's punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. The duo have captivated audiences across the United States, appearing alongside storytellers, comedians, fire eaters, puppets, burlesque artists, poets, and circus performers. Recent appearances have included Joe's Pub at the Public Theatre in NYC, the Rochester Fringe Festival, Philadelphia's Science History Institute, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond, VA, Cleveland's Wizbang Circus Theatre, and the Coney Island Sideshow stage. Their latest album, Super Natural History, is a musical cabinet of curiosities inspired by both the natural world and the metaphysical realm, uniting the worlds of magic and science with songs that explore subjects like witchcraft, monsters, and the underworld alongside bats, plants, poisons, and parasites. Super Natural History is an alchemical experiment of sorts—magic and science may seem like contradictory concepts, but for Charming Disaster they are opposite sides of the same coin: alternate ways to see the world and consider its mysteries. We're back to our time travel again this month, heading back to 2006 where we'll be exploring our favourite songs from the year Pluto had it's planetary status cruelly ripped from it's icy mountains. We discuss Pop, Folk, Post-Metal, Emo, & Whatever the hell Scott Walker was doing at that point. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Interview with Victor DeLorenzo Of Violent Femmes & The Night Crickets DeLorenzo was born in 1954, the son of Victor and Charlotte DeLorenzo, grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and has lived in Milwaukee since. He has been a drummer since the age of 16 while attending St. Catherine's High School (Racine, Wisconsin), and has been an actor since the age of five. While attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, he auditioned for and was accepted into Theatre X in 1976, and worked with them in various roles for more than 20 years.[ As a drummer, DeLorenzo paired up with bassist Brian Ritchie in 1980, as a rhythm section they called "Violent Femmes". When singer, guitarist, and songwriter Gordon Gano joined them in 1981, the band kept the name.[2] DeLorenzo's father loaned the band $10,000 to record their eponymous debut album in 1982. However, the band was forced to delay its release until 1983 after they signed to Slash Records. DeLorenzo's signature sound is a result of his minimalist drum kit. He often uses nothing more than a snare drum, a tranceaphone and steel brushes. The tranceaphone consists of a metal bushel basket inverted over a tom. He favors this style of kit because in their early days, the band often played on the streets. DeLorenzo continued to act with Theatre X, and record and tour with the Femmes until 1993, when he left to devote more time to acting and to recording his own music. He toured as part of Moe Tucker's band in that year. In 1996 he opened a recording studio called "Joe's Real Recording" He has released three solo records since 1990. In addition to recording his own music, he has played with several side projects, including Ash Can School. In 2000, he teamed up with Ritchie to put together a Femmes compilation, and subsequently rejoined the band until it disbanded again in 2009.In March 2013, Gano, Ritchie and DeLorenzo reformed Violent Femmes once more and played a homecoming show at the Summerfest music festival in their native Milwaukee. Three months later, in July, the band announced a new line-up with Dresden Dolls member Brian Viglione as the band's drummer. DeLorenzo confirmed in a statement that he had left the Femmes permanently because of a failure of the band members to resolve their long-standing business disputes. DeLorenzo performs percussion in the chamber rock duo Nineteen Thirteen with cellist Janet Schiff. Nineteen Thirteen's recording of "Hurricane Noel" was featured in the 2011 TED Global Conference. Night Crickets, a long-distance groove affair conducted during the drawn-out days of lockdown and beyond. Featuring David J, Victor DeLorenzo, and Darwin Meiners.   Iconic and foundational bands in the history of alternative music certainly include Bauhaus, Love And Rockets, and Violent Femmes. San Francisco born artist Darwin Meiners was a fan of all three. A chance meeting 13 years ago with David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) grew into a friendship, and Darwin not only became a bandmate, but David J's manager. After reaching out to Victor DeLorenzo through e-mail, Darwin met the Violent Femmes drummer after the Femmes' Coachella set in 2013. Soon after the three collaborated on Darwin's 2014 release Souvenir. As the pandemic took hold, Darwin was looking for a new project to occupy the lock-down time and approached Victor, who was keen to proceed and suggested that David join as well. The musical trust established between these three was immediate and Night Crickets were born. Within weeks a global process was initiated between them, the recordings eventually forming the album, A Free Society. To say this is something of a dream come true for music fans would be entirely accurate. (The band's name came from one of many Zoom meetings between the three members. After addressing various pressing musical issues the conversation rambled somewhat and turned to the subject of David Lynch, with David J telling an anecdote which was told to him by Lynch's sound designer, John Neff. Lynch had asked Neff to obtain a field recording of crickets chirping at night for inclusion in Mulholland Drive. When Neff played him the tape, the director immediately recognized the sound that the insects make when it is light which is apparently a little different to their nocturnal chirp. “No! No! No! These are day crickets, John! I want my night crickets!” Victor, Darwin, and David then shared a look of mutual realization and instantly agreed that the project now had a name!) . In 2006, Kalen joined Korn on tour, primarily on backing vocals, and can be heard and seen in the MTV Unplugged: Korn release in 2007 where he was featured playing an exotic array of instruments. He remained with Korn – often seen as The White Rabbit – until 2008. While working with Korn, Kalen fronted the band The Changing, where he collaborated again with Jonathan Davis on single Jerry Bruckheimer. His career in metal would continue as the lead vocalist for the band Superfix, before joining forces with Joey Jordison (formerly of Slipknot) as the lead vocalist for Vimic in 2016. Kalen has worked extensively in the studio providing backing vocals for artists including 10 Years, Pop Evil, Dragonforce and singing on the Lego Batman movie soundtrack. Now, Kalen Chase has embarked on a new path, building upon his singer-songwriter roots, hard rock persona, and production experience to create a sound of his own. Eruption at 5150 Our guest this week is film maker & author Andrew Bennett! Andrew has documented and filmed videos the Deftones, Katy Perry, The Dresden Dolls, Jonas Brothers, Nickelback and more! That “more” includes the subject of his book “Eruption in the Canyon: 212 Days and Nights with the Genius of Eddie Van Halen”. We talked to Andrew about his inspirations and influences. We talked about some pretty great behind the scenes stories of what Eddie Van Halen was REALLY like and how things went down at the infamous 5150 Van Halen recording studios. And from the outside looking in, it would appear that Eddie Van Halen clearly favored one of these bands over the other - The Jonas Brothers and Nickelback. Be sure to listen to the stories Andrew tells us to find out who .... And lastly ...we talk about how Andrew got to be the singer for Van Halen for a day, and what Eddie thought of his singing ability .... It's an honor and a privilege to welcome accomplished journalist, author, and rap podcast OG SHAWN SETARO, a reporter at Complex, to Episode 052. Setaro has a brand new book on the shelves this week, about the sordid saga of Tekashi 6ix9ine. He's the writer and reporter on the podcasts 'Infamous' (about Tekashi), 'Complex Subject: Pop Smoke'. He's written about music and culture for Forbes, The Atlantic, Vibe, The Source, GQ, Esquire, The Sondheim Review, and more. Setaro was Editor-in-Chief for Rap Genius, and hosted the iconic rap pod The Cipher, an encyclopedic hip-hop program featuring deep dive interviews with 250 legendary figures in the culture.  The Cipher was among the biggest influences and inspirations for The Upful LIFE Podcast, and in this interview, you will see the parallels and find out just why I revere “Same Ol' Shawn” the way I do. 8:00 - RIP GREG TATE. (tributes from Questlove & Jay Smooth) 18:30 - Introducing SHAWN SETARO & a lil' about the Tekashi 6ix9ine story 30:00 - Interview - SHAWN SETARO Setaro is the author of the fantastic new book Complex Presents Dummy Boy: Tekashi 6ix9ine and the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, his first. We discuss this extremely shocking tale, his process reporting the story, and unpack the project at large. In tracing Tekashi 6ix9ine's life - from Bushwick to the heights of the rap scene - Setaro illuminates the story of the young rapper who forged an alliance with a notorious street gang to bolster his image and boost his internet clout. More than a biography, Dummy Boy is an American crime story, a critical examination of internet trolling in the Trump era, and an exploration of the long-running connection between rap, gangs, and police in New York City. In this conversation we touch Shawn's career journey into journalism and podcasting, plus the violent/criminal nature of drill rap culture, how it finds its way into the mainstream music culture. Shawn Setaro is a man of many talents in the musical sphere; in addition to his journalistic accomplishments, he's is also a Berklee-educated bassist and guitarist who has recorded and performed with The Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer, the Lordz of Brooklyn, Alina Simone, and others BUY HIS BOOK! Palmer is a woman of great conviction; she speaks often about the communities that form around art, and is unrelenting in her commitment to her own vision. She's also great company.
