Guy Hobsbawm, the new alias of Gunnar Haslam, offers Mysteries a debut LP that is perfectly tailored to the times. Communes Qui Poussent Comme Des Champignons Après Le Déluge, which literally translates to ‘communes that grew like mushrooms after the flood’, is sparse and cinematic: an ideal score to any dystopian film. Except “dystopia” denotes an imaginary or speculative scenario, and what Hobsbawm has created is a natural reaction to the current global crisis as it relates to the past. In his own words, the title “pictures the flood of hunger, economic depression, and wide-scale political instability that was the background of 1848, draws links to the coming flood of 2020, and (tries to) imagine a brighter future of communes growing like mushrooms.” The conceptual framework of 1848 and the ideologies of Louis-Auguste Blanqui, serves to mold the sonic landscape. In these pieces, there’s a focus on absence rather than presence. Sparse, long-form arrangements, like “Blanquistes du Nil” and the cricket-laden “Exil au Serir” seem to conjure a world in which the earth has supplanted man, or moved on without him. Many of these tracks make use of natural instrumentation and field recordings taken by Hobsbawm in North Africa and Mexico, to haunting effect. The lapping water and creaking wood in “Palermo, June 1848” suggest the residue of a flood, thereby linking the sonic to the conceptual. The final track, “Fustat,” which builds tension through metallic clangs and a Japanese sho, is an homage to Iannis Xenakis, the pioneering Greek-French composer. Guy Hobsbawm has taken the strange predicament of our global climate and created a cohesive album that represents the despair of the present — while connecting it to the past. The result is a landscape that is both foreign and familiar: a sonic paradox that represents the recurrence of a dark history. And yet within this, there is a glimmer of hope for a different future. Mysteries of the Deep is proud to present the first chapter in a three-part seasonal anthology series, capturing a range of work from artists who have inspired or contributed to the project since its inception. This cohesive first chapter builds upon itself organically in a clear arc, offering listeners a sonic outpouring that is sparse, delicate and tonal. These are lullabies of presence. Part one in the series humbly boasts an accomplished array of artists, opening with an oceanic meditation from Aleski Perälä. It then moves into tracks from Andrew Pekler, Earthen Sea, James A. Reeves, LDY OSC, label staple William Selman, and Mysteries founder Grant Aaron, amongst other notable artists. As if an ode to the season of its release, these pieces retain a natural, generative quality. Think cirrus clouds moving against blue sky or the pale lavender of twilight. Each arrangement stays situated within the realm of air, of ether, presenting a world that is dreamlike and essential. The Bunker favourite exposes a weirder side of NYC house music. Full interview with @gunnar_haslam: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/gunnar-haslam "I wanted to put together a mix that was a bit slower and housier than usual, but that was still psychedelic and dubbed-out. New York is well known for its more upbeat house cuts (Todd Terry, Masters At Work, Strictly Rhythm, DJ Duke, etc.), but I wanted to represent some of the weirder sides of NY/NJ house - the stuff that was a major influence to me growing up."

Techno is Gunnar Haslam’s starting point, but the New Yorker often strays way off grid once he gets started. Mostly that happens when in album mode, where he weaves weird melodies into beatless tracks that are laden with drones. When turning out 12”s for the likes of L.I.E.S., Delsin and Argot, he favours a chilly, slithering sound, and as Romans with Tin Man he cooks up elegantly mournful techno that sends you deep into your own mind. The former psychiatrist also plays live with Mike Servito and Justin Cudmore as Hot Mix, so someone who is always evolving and exploring new territory. It’s the same story on his mix for us, which wastes no time in dropping you straight into a bendy, supple techno groove that soon begins to change shape and sound. Along the course of 70 minutes, it becomes skeletal and stripped back, percussive and spaced out then hurried and funky. A pulsing drum line underpins everything while the real drama unfolds in a burrowing top line or mind melting acid squiggle up top. In condensing many different forms of techno into this one mix, Haslam masterfully showcases the breadth of his fascinating sound.

The 46th Avenue Red Podcast installment comes from Luger (real name Dorin Croitoru) from Bucharest, the sprawling capital city of Romania. Luger is a friend and musical peer of Profet, the man behind that awesome 17th installment in our series (https://soundcloud.com/avenue-red/podcast-017-profet). Through their events platform Chameleon and various other happenings at Bucharest’s Control Club, Luger and Profet have played alongside some incredible global acts, as Luger states himself: “We are working on bringing artists that we respect and are close to the directions we feel we must take in regards with our visions of quality music. Our last guest was XDB and in the past we brought over Marcellus Pittman, Hakim Murphy, John Heckle and Paul du Lac to mention a handful. I'm a regular at Control either with local players and movers on the scene or in supporting acts for control guest DJ’s such as Even Tuell, Ulf Eriksson, Legowelt, Gunnar Haslam, DJ TLR and so on”. This mix is an incredibly smooth and dynamic mixture of eerie, trippy ambient soundscapes; curiously introspective moments; hypnotic minimal tracks and also some beautifully crafted melodic tracks too… it’s something that you can really lose yourself in and then re-find yourself an hour later after the silence has begun. “The first thing that comes to mind about how this mix came out is balance. A podcast is a great opportunity to stop researching music outside of the box and concentrate on what is already inside the collection. The process of finding pieces of a jigsaw that fit perfectly and crafting a spot, a shape or a space for something else or around something is one of the best ways of getting a deeper knowledge and understanding of the music that lured you in. The way you map it all out is where the DJ shows their true creative edge.” Dorin Croitoru, August 2015 https://soundcloud.com/luger https://soundcloud.com/chameleonparties ===== Full tracklist for this mix coming soon, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments in the meantime.
