Some of you know I often talk about "intelligence" being context and/or task dependent. Well, if this instalment of TYP was a room, I was definitely (and happily) the dumbest in the room. Professor Nick Haslam is a world-renowned social psychology researcher whose interests include dehumanisation, stigma, psychiatric classification, and mental health. Our conversation went far and wide and we covered everything from bullying and identity to self-diagnosis and understanding our own mind. It was a privilege to hang out with the Prof. for an hour and yes, the meaning behind the title is revealed in the chat. His most recent book is called 'Troubled Minds: Understanding and Treating Mental Illness. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It is the end of an error in Cleveland, and we can now celebrate the dumbest tank job in the history of dumb tank jobs: A shrewd snakeoil salesman always knows when the jig is up. Paul DePodesta could see that the 2025 Browns were boring deep into the earth's mantle toward a new low, even for them. He had burned through a decade of benefit-of-the-doubt from Stockholm Syndrome-suffering Browns fans and the often-fawning media. He could hear the hecklers, as well as the whispers about the man behind the curtain. DePodesta knew that once the Browns burned through both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders — the team's desperate double-reverse flea-flicker Hail Mary effort to replace the quarter-billion-dollar imaginary-friend quarterback he traded their future for — he would no longer be able to sell his swindle. And there, sitting on his LinkedIn page like a rube fresh off a turnip truck or a lonely, diamond-studded dowager, were the Colorado Rockies: a perennial doormat of a baseball franchise coming off a 119-loss season. So DePodesta, the Duke and Dauphin of Moneyball, tied some bedsheets together and slipped out the back window of Browns headquarters before anyone could nab him. “The Browns were good at planning for the future to win while DePodesta was here,” wrote Jason Lloyd in The Athletic. “They just rarely got around to the actual winning. It was like booking and planning elaborate Caribbean vacations but never taking them.” No, Jason, that's not quite correct. What DePodesta did was like investing money needed for food and roof repairs into cryptocurrency, then telling the family over a crackers-and-ketchup dinner that they were too stupid to understand his daring long-range vision. DePodesta, the Browns' former Chief Strategic Officer, was at least magnanimous enough to accept a tiny sliver of blame for the Deshaun Watson fiasco. Sort of. When cornered by the Rockies media about Watson in his introductory press conference, DePodesta said: Here's what I would say, and I truly believe this. I believe that most of the decisions, especially the big ones like that, are organizational decisions, right? I'm not a believer in the ‘King Scout' situation where there is one guy who makes every call. The jobs are too complex, the decisions are too hard. They impact too many different things. So I always think these sort of collective decisions, it can be hard to get unanimous (opinions) on those types of things. Everyone who was a part of that? We all own that. We just do, that's part of the deal. What an absolute cheesedick. DePodesta sounds exactly like the “consultant” who comes to you, the assistant manager, and says: Replace all our desks with standing work stations and the coffee machine with inspirational posters. You can sign off on those decisions. I was never here. I will never stop being amused by the earnest discussions about which sequence of years of deliberate non-competitiveness made their organization the best in North American pro sports, the Cleveland Browns or the Philadelphia 76ers. (If you don’t deliberately lose as many games as possible for years at a time, how can you acquire a truly indispensable superstar like Ben Simmons?) Still, it’s hard to top intentionally going 1-31, passing on DeShaun Watson to take an F- prospect in the second round, drafting a solid if not transcendent QB #1 overall, trade the solid QB for a 5th round pick, and then invest an enormous amount of trade and salary capital in the QB you passed on after he had proven to be a serial sexual harasser because of some numbers inflated by a lot of garbage-time stat padding on a 4-12 team. Amazing stuff. Admittedly, it’s not entirely on DePodesta — Haslam was obviously a major factor in the world historically catastrophic Watson trade — but a share of responsibility is enough to damn him in any court. Perhaps he will be better back in his native sport, and it would be hard for the Rockies to get worse. On the other hand, I would have said that about the Browns. Have you ever wondered how much your faith can actually change the world around you? Sometimes we think of faith as private or passive. But Scripture shows us faith that acts, a faith that steps into situations others ignore and transforms lives in a single moment.Today, we're looking at a story that is radical, countercultural, and Spirit-empowered: Acts 3:1–10.”
You are a deeply devoted person. Everyone around you already knows what you're devoted to, they can see what you are devoted to in how you spend your time, your energy, your conversations. In fact, sometimes others notice your devotion before you do.In Acts 2, we see a picture of people whose lives weremarked by a devotion to the things of God, to His Word, His people, His presence and His mission.

After a yearlong battle, the city of Cleveland and the Haslam Sports Group announced a deal this week in which the city ends its objections to the Browns move to Brook Park. The city will get $100 million over 15 years from the team, money to raze the existing stadium and to help Cleveland revitalize the lakefront without the Browns. The city dropped its lawsuit and its challenge to a permit allowing the new complex to exceed Federal Aviation Administration height restrictions. The story begins our discussion of the week's news on the Friday “Sound of Ideas Reporters Roundtable.”

Dr Virginia Reid talks with one of the co-authors of The New Psychology of Health: Unlocking the Social Cure (2018). Professor Alex Haslam talks about how he and his team have discovered that people who are more socially connected tend to live longer, recover more quickly from illness, and experience better overall physical and mental health. These benefits are not just about having company—they reflect the powerful influence of social identity. When people see themselves as part of a meaningful group, whether it’s family, a workplace, a community, or a sports team, this shared identity provides a source of strength, purpose, and resilience. Social ties have been shown to be as beneficial to health as not smoking, maintaining a good diet, and regular exercise. This is because our group memberships shape how we cope with stress, how supported we feel, and how we make health decisions. Belonging can reduce feelings of loneliness, increase motivation to follow medical advice, and even affect how our bodies respond to treatment. In therapy and healthcare, outcomes improve when there’s a strong relationship between practitioner and patient—especially when they share a common understanding or identity. When people feel like their therapist or doctor is “on their side” or “one of us,” trust increases, communication improves, and treatment is more likely to succeed. Health isn’t just an individual matter—it’s deeply social. Our connections to others shape how we think, feel, and behave. This is true across many health challenges: from depression and addiction to trauma recovery and chronic pain. People are more likely to recover and thrive when they can maintain or rebuild meaningful group relationships. For health services, this means recognising that fostering connection and identity should be part of the care process. Encouraging participation in group programs, peer networks, and supportive communities can be just as important as medication or clinical treatment. Social identity is not just about who we are—it’s also a powerful pathway to better health.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're back in Spain, and I've got questions. Why is Spain growing faster than Germany, France, and even the US? Why can they build high-speed rail for a fraction of the cost, and why are they the only major EU country where immigration is boosting GDP without blowing up politics? This week, we talk to Professor Joe Haslam in Madrid about what's being called Europe's miracle economy. Since COVID, Spain's growth has outpaced every major European economy, driven by smart immigration (nearly 1 million working Latin Americans), a tourism boom (especially in the cooling north), and €160 billion in EU funds that they've actually used. But it's not all cerveza and sunshine. Spain's power grid recently collapsed for nine hours, revealing the fragility of the green energy transition. Despite the boom, Spain's productivity and housing market are heading the wrong way. Public servants now outnumber private sector workers, and even El Guapo himself, PM Pedro Sánchez, is afraid to touch buy-to-lets. We also dig into what Spain's infrastructure success says about Ireland's failure. Is it Napoleon vs. Wellington all over again? Because if you inherited the Napoleonic state, like Spain did, you can build metros, fast trains, and affordable housing. If you inherited British common law? You get planning objections and overpriced shoeboxes in Drimnagh. Join the gang! https://plus.acast.com/s/the-david-mcwilliams-podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In our Constitution, the framers established three independent branches of government, creating checks and balances to keep any one branch from becoming too powerful. Governors Bredesen and Haslam are joined by Harvard professor Cass Sunstein and Vanderbilt professor David Lewis to explore the history and interaction between the branches and whether the Framers' vision holds up in current practice.
This new updated edition is not only hard cover for long life, but it contains an additional 25 pages of revelations from the author including documents from the FBI, CIA, CDC, and NOPD, plus the actual crime scene photos of the Mary Sherman murder. You'll see why we say this is the "Hottest cold case in America." The 1964 murder of a nationally known cancer researcher sets the stage for this gripping exposÉ of medical professionals enmeshed in covert government operations over the course of three decades. Following a trail of police records, FBI files, cancer statistics, and medical journals, this revealing book presents evidence of a web of medical secret-keeping that began with the handling of evidence in the JFK assassination and continued apace, sweeping doctors into cover-ups of cancer outbreaks, contaminated polio vaccine, the arrival of the AIDS virus, and biological weapon research using infected monkeys.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
