We may not all have Indigenous blood in our veins, but we can certainly learn from the Indigenous people. Because we are all connected to each other, and we are all connected to this planet. Indigenous teachings can help us reconnect with our ancestors, remember the simplicity of the past, and reclaim our health and wellness. Chelsey Luger and Thosh Collins, co-founders of Well for Culture and authors of The Seven Circles, explain how we all can benefit from Indigenous teachings and how they've incorporated ancient wisdom into their modern lives. || LINKS || www.wellforculture.com | www.vivobarefoot.com/darinolien | www.calderalab.com/darin | www.nootopia.com/darin | https://darinolien.com/indigenous-teachings-for-living-well-chelsey-luger-thosh-collins/

We will learn: How different types of movement elicit different emotional responses and how to use them to move through our emotions. The symbolism of the medicine wheel and how it can remind us to view our healing holistically. How to heal our connection with ourselves and nature with reverence and ceremony. Isn't it funny how we have all this technology and progress to give us insight into things we never had before, yet somehow, all this science and tech is just proving what the ancients already knew? We lost their indigenous wisdom for a long time. In reality, it was stolen from us. On purpose. Because if we knew our real power, we wouldn't need to rely so heavily on everything that's marketed to us. So today, we're reclaiming ancient wisdom and learning to honor our whole selves and the land we live on through Native wellness philosophies and practices. One of the taglines for this event was, "Glory Bound." There was nothing glorious about this one as Dusty Rhodes tries to out-shine the main event cage match by going for the United States Title in a cage right before it. Ron Garvin was also the defending World Champion, and he couldn't draw flies if he was rolled in cow crap. The Rock 'n' Roll Express vs. Midnight Express match should have been great, but it was put on a stupid scaffold. Terry Taylor had to do some heavy lifting in the TV Title match against Nikita Koloff. "Dr. Death" Steve Williams and Barry Windham even stunk up the joint with a fairly boring encounter for the UWF World Title. The Road Warriors, in their kayfabe hometown, also get screwed by an infamous Dusty Finish that pretty much kills Chicago for JCP forever. Two other "major" things happened on this show, as Bill Watts' UWF was recently bought out by Jim Crockett and they combined as The Wrestling Network (TWN) and had multiple Title Unification matches on this show. Also, this was the first year that the WWF ran Survivor Series and put it on free TV to go against Starrcade on pay-per-view. Because of that, starting in 1988, Starrcade was moved to December. In the news, we cover WCCW and AWA trying to hang on by the thinnest of threads, the NWA's business tanking, multiple hirings, firings, and quittings, and Uncle Dave Meltzer giving a hilarious bad take on Ron Simmons, plus much more!ALL PODCAST, SOCIAL MEDIA, & MERCHANDISE LINKS: linktr.ee/MainEventMarksCHECK OUT OUR MERCHANDISE: MainEventMarks.redbubble.com & bonfire.com/store/maineventmarksGET FUELED WITH SHOCKED ENERGY: https://shockedenergy.com/collections/all?sca_ref=1814354.mOXH7RrwKh&sca_source=MainEventMarks (promo code: MainEvent for 10% off)KEEP YOUR COFFEE GIMMICK FREE AND FRESH ROASTED TO ORDER WITH COFFEE BRAND COFFEE: https://coffeebrandcoffee.com/?ref=WC7vE0tK (promo code: MAINEVENT for 5% off)GET AWESOME SPORTS T-SHIRTS: intheclutch.com/MAINEVENT (use code "MAINEVENT" for 10% off)ORDER FROM SWIFT LIFESTYLES: SwiftLifestyles.com, use PROMO CODE: MainEventMarks at checkout for 15% offLISTEN EVERY WEDNESDAY AT 9PM EST: tikilive.com/channel/BURNS

"We have offered a model, the seven circles, that helps people to understand that it's not just food and fitness, which so many wellness practitioners purport. It's not just diet and exercise. It's not just the way that you look on the outside or the $90 yoga pants that you can afford, or the fancy studio class or the 25 ingredient smoothie that costs $25. You know, those are unfortunately the images that we have now when it comes to wellness. And that's why so many people continue to feel excluded and uninterested in wellness. It seems so superficial. And so what I hope is that we have incorporated all these other elements to show people that not only can they be a wellness person who participates or who practices wellness, but they are already. We are all on this journey to some degree already." So says Chelsey Luger. Luger and her husband Thosh Collins are wellness teachers, authors, and the founders of the indigenous wellness initiative, Well for Culture. Launched in 2013, Well For Culture was established to reclaim ancient Native wellness philosophies and practices to promote the wellbeing of the physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional self. From their exploration and practice, the two have developed a holistic model for modern living which they share with us in their first book, The Seven Circles: Indigenous Teachings for Living Well.  According to Luger and Collins, these seven circles—food, movement, sleep, community, sacred space, ceremony, and connection to land—are interconnected, working together to keep our lives in balance. In our conversation, we begin to explore these many aspects of health, as Luger and Collins explain how their teachings can be adapted to every life, and how to do so while maintaining respect and reverence for the Indigenous origins of the wisdom and practices they share. We discuss their work to reframe wellness, how to integrate spirituality into movement through intention, and the power of the hollow bone mentality. Healing and wellness is not just a journey of one, they tell us, but rather a journey of family and community: When we take the important steps to heal ourselves, we contribute to the health of all. I was very moved by this conversation, which we'll turn to now. The Seven Circles: Indigenous Teachings for Living Well, by Chelsey Luger and Thosh Collins, was published by HarperOne in 2022. In this honest and intentional book, Luger and Collins takes us out of capitalism and into indigenous territory to learn what true wellness means. In this revolutionary self-help guide, two beloved Native American wellness activists offer wisdom for achieving spiritual, physical, and emotional wellbeing rooted in Indigenous ancestral knowledge. When wellness teachers and husband-wife duo Chelsey Luger and Thosh Collins founded their Indigenous wellness initiative, Well for Culture, they extended an invitation to all to honor their whole self through Native wellness philosophies and practices. In reclaiming this ancient wisdom for health and wellbeing—drawing from traditions spanning multiple tribes—they developed the Seven Circles, a holistic model for modern living rooted in timeless teachings from their ancestors. Luger and Collins have introduced this universally adaptable template for living well to Ivy league universities and corporations like Nike, Adidas, and Google, and now make it available to everyone in this wise guide. The Seven Circles model comprises interconnected circles that keep all aspects of our lives in balance, functioning in harmony with one another. They are food, movement, sleep, ceremony, sacred space, land, community In The Seven Circles, Luger and Collins share intimate stories from their life journeys growing up in tribal communities, from the Indigenous tradition of staying active and spiritually centered through running and dance, to the universal Indigenous emphasis on a light-filled, minimalist home to create sacred space. Along the way, Luger and Collins invite readers to both adapt these teachings to their lives as well as do so without appropriating and erasing the original context, representing a critical new ethos for the wellness space. Each chapter closes with practical advice on how to engage with the teachings, as well as wisdom for keeping that particular circle in harmony with the others. With warmth and generosity—and 75 atmospheric photographs by Collins throughout—The Seven Circles teaches us how to connect with nature, with our community, and with ourselves, and to integrate ancient Indigenous philosophies of health and wellbeing into our own lives to find healing and balance. Indigenous artists often straddle a space created by white anthropologists between art and craft. Cannupa Hanska Luger grapples with that dichotomy. Creating art from tradition that, in its time, was purely practical. And seeing his own contemporary activism viewed as art when it was, in fact, protest. Luger is a multidisciplinary artist and an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold—Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara and Lakota.  Through installations and social collaboration, Luger communicates stories about 21st-century indigeneity with critical cultural analysis and respect for the diverse materials, environments, and communities he engages.  He lectures and produces large-scale projects around the globe and his works are in many public collections.  Luger is a 2022 Guggenheim fellow, recipient of the 2021 United States Artists Fellowship Award for Craft and was named a Grist 50 Fixer for 2021, a list which includes emerging leaders in climate, sustainability, and equity who are creating change across the nation.  He is a 2020 Creative Capital Fellow, a 2020 Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow, the recipient the 2020 A Blade Of Grass Artist Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art and the recipient of the Center For Crafts inaugural Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship for 2020.  He is the recipient of a 2019 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grants, a 2019 Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Honoree and the recipient of the Museum of Arts and Design's 2018 inaugural Burke Prize.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
