How did Canada, previously known for its politeness, become home to a widespread, violent antisemitic movement? Attacks on Jews are higher per capita in Canada than anywhere else in the West. Montreal has been called the “antisemitism capital of North America.” Today, Josh is joined by Jesse Brown, editor and publisher of the independent news and podcast company Canadaland. In a recent series called “What is Happening Here,” he delved into the antisemitism spreading across the country. Josh speaks with him about unique ways in which Canadian media fuels this bigotry, including by failing to report who carries out hate crimes. “The worse the media has done here, the more government support they’ve gotten,” Jesse says. The problem trickles down from the highest levels of the government and leads to policies in newsrooms. “What Americans can see in Canada is: This is what happens when nobody is pushing back against this anti-Zionist thing,” he explains. “It gets bolder, it gets infused into organizations, it becomes a witch hunt against everyday people.” Also today, the BBC looks at girls in Afghanistan being sold into slavery, and focuses on how difficult it is for their fathers. To the BBC, the men doing the selling must be portrayed as victims. Josh explains the warped thinking that leads to these journalistic fiascoes. See links, images, videos and more in the newsletter. October 7 and the Gaza war radically changed the way many people around the world, including Diaspora Jews, viewed Israel. For Toronto-based journalist Jesse Brown, the turning point came not with Hamas' massacre itself, but with the domestic backlash that followed. “Canadians got angry with Jews after October 7, and the entire national discourse seemed to just turn against Jews in a way that I wouldn’t have imagined possible,” he told the Haaretz Podcast. Using police-reported hate crime statistics from Canada and the United States, Brown argues that a Jew in Canada is now about nine times more likely to be the victim of a hate crime than a Jew in the United States. Ironically, he explained to podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer, the progressive political atmosphere in Canada has made things worse for Jews, not better. Brown’s podcast series “What is Happening Here” documents the skyrocketing antisemitism targeting Jewish institutions and neighborhoods in Canada, including synagogues being shot at, firebombed or vandalized, and Jewish-owned businesses and individuals singled out for harassment campaigns. Brown contends that debates over whether specific chants or actions are “anti-Israel,” “anti-Zionist” or “antisemitic” obscure the practical impact on Jewish communities. While he stops short of equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism, Brown said that contemporary anti-Zionism is “just as dangerous to Jews.” Read more: Canadian Watchdog Reports Record Number of Antisemitic Incidents in 2025 Canadian-Jewish Groups Decry Efforts by pro-Palestinian Groups to Strip Jewish Schools of Their Charity Status Toronto Police Arrest Suspect in Passover Shooting at Jewish-owned Restaurant Campaign Targeting Jewish Children's Summer Camps in Canada Condemned as AntisemiticSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
By Robert Riggs Armed Forces Radio Spc John Bagwell Evades Capture During The 1968 Tet Offensive in Vietnam – Recreation As I watched the daring rescue of the two airmen shot down over Iran in early April of 2026, I found myself thinking of John Bagwell. John's story is not a true-crime saga you’d expect to hear on this podcast, but it is gripping, timely, and no less dramatic. I learned about his military service when he wore a Purple Heart ribbon to a search engine marketing group meeting here in Dallas many years ago. John had never talked about his time in the Vietnam War, and we were surprised. We learned that in 1968, Bagwell escaped from behind enemy lines during a surprise attack dubbed the Tet Offensive. He was wounded and alone, moving through deadly, unfamiliar territory while trying to avoid enemy fire and, at times, bullets from his own side. His harrowing fight for survival began at a radio station in Vietnam with a scene that could have been lifted straight from a Hollywood movie. The federal drug purchasing program known as 340B was created in 1992 to help select provider organizations stretch scarce resources to care for patients. More than three decades later, health systems of all shapes and sizes have come to rely on 340B for their financial sustainability. But the program has come under criticism. And in recent years, it's been under more scrutiny, with manufacturers, state governments, and federal regulators proposing changes to how it operates. In this episode, host Abby Burns invites Advisory Board experts Gina Lohr and Chloe Bakst to unpack the origin and controversy around 340B. They debate whether 340B has strayed from its intended purpose and break down the proposed changes to the program, how likely they are to go into effect, and what those changes would mean for health systems. Plus, stay tuned to the end of the episode, where co-host Rae Woods discusses the recent healthcare-focused executive order and what it signals for the future of this administration's drug policy.
