By Robert Riggs Armed Forces Radio Spc John Bagwell Evades Capture During The 1968 Tet Offensive in Vietnam – Recreation As I watched the daring rescue of the two airmen shot down over Iran in early April of 2026, I found myself thinking of John Bagwell. John's story is not a true-crime saga you’d expect to hear on this podcast, but it is gripping, timely, and no less dramatic. I learned about his military service when he wore a Purple Heart ribbon to a search engine marketing group meeting here in Dallas many years ago. John had never talked about his time in the Vietnam War, and we were surprised. We learned that in 1968, Bagwell escaped from behind enemy lines during a surprise attack dubbed the Tet Offensive.  He was wounded and alone, moving through deadly, unfamiliar territory while trying to avoid enemy fire and, at times, bullets from his own side. His harrowing fight for survival began at a radio station in Vietnam with a scene that could have been lifted straight from a Hollywood movie. Buffalo-based folk duo Sally Schaefer (fiddle, vocals) and Tyler Bagwell (guitar, vocals) breathe fire into folk songs old and new, including a treasure trove of Americana, Celtic, and Erie Canal music. Sally is a well-known ethnomusicologist and musician around the Western New York area, appearing with numerous bands and recording for various projects representing an array of musical genres. Tyler is an award-winning historian and patchwork songwriter with a busker's voice in search of couplets within the notion that "history rhymes." Together, they invent and reinvent songs highlighting events, people, and places of local and national note. For larger shows, they often play with the addition of bass and drums as folk-rock band The Travesties. Tyler and Sally visited the Flamingo Lounge on January 14, 2026 for an engaging session telling stories and discussing their newest projects and sharing live renditions of some of their new music.

Lee Bagwell of Robertson County is the new Tennessee Young Farmers and Ranchers State Chair. Bagwell was elected as State Chair by fellow young farmers and ranchers from across Tennessee. As State Chair Bagwell will lead the state YF&R Committee and sit on the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation State Board of Directors as an ex officio member. Bagwell explains what it means to him to be elected to this position and what he hopes to accomplish in his year of service.

August 31, 1990, the Houston Astros make one of their best trades ever, acquiring minor league infielder Jeff Bagwell from the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Larry Andersen. Refusing to part with Triple-A third baseman Scott Cooper to get Larry Andersen from the Astros for the stretch run, Red Sox general manager Lou Gorman trades the Eastern League's MVP Jeff Bagwell for the right-handed relief pitcher.The University of Hartford standout will go on to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1991 and we will win the National League's MVP Award in 1994 and become one of the greatest players in Astros franchise history. Anderson was a key member of the Red Sox bullpen down the stretch and helped Boston capture the the AL East Title. What is also lost is the Red Sox had a future MVP themselves in Mo Vaughn at firstbase who became on of the top offensive players in team history. August 31, 1990, Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. become the first father and son combination to play together in a major league game. The elder Griffey plays left field and bats second, while the younger Griffey bats third and plays center field. They each pick up one hit in four at-bats. August 31, 1950, Gil Hodges of the Brooklyn Dodgers ties a major league record by piling up 17 total bases in a game against the Boston Braves. Hodges hits four home runs and a single in leading the Dodgers to a 19-3 win at Ebbets Field.August 31, 1917, 22-year old Red Sox lefty Babe Ruth won his 20th game of the season, defeating the Athletics, 5-3. Ruth won 24 games that season, the second straight year he had reached the 20-win mark. Ruth posted a career 94-46 mark as a pitcher, but earned his fame as a slugger

Summer Throwback! My guests for the first episode of this podcast were my two very best friends, Julie Bagwell and Frieda Younts. We've been friends for over 30 years now! Over time we've experienced lots of ups and downs but have remained close through it all. How did we do it? By being honest and real with each other, for one thing, but mostly by building our friendship on the foundation of Jesus Christ. Growing up I only had one friend at a time and always felt like I never belonged. In my late 20's I began praying for God to bring some good friends into my life and He was faithful to do just that through Julie and Frieda. Each of us has been married for at least 30 years and have grown children and now grandchildren, so we have lots of experience under our belt—some good and some bad. But we've held onto each other through it all and are grateful God has helped our friendship to remain strong. In this episode we talk about how hurts and jealousy, especially in a group with three friends, can be easy to fall into. But instead of letting them fester we bring it out in the open and talk about these things in the spirit of love. Friendship is work, but it's so worth the reward. As I listened to this episode again, I thought of how much changed since our conversation. It's amazing to think we didn't know the good and the bad that were about to happen in just a few short months. But even through it all, we can still say God is good. Our desire through this conversation is to help other women experience friendship like we have, because good, godly friends can have an amazing impact on your life.
