Zo, having served in the military, can empathize with people who become disaffected, unmotivated or uninspired with their chosen profession. Such people might have chosen to engage with their career path believing that they might accomplish great things only to be confronted with tedious and seemingly meaningless work. Like a certain Lt. Chris Burnett, a U.S. Naval aviator who has found himself running dull routine missions instead of punching Nazis in the face. Life comes at you fast and, in the case of Lt. Burnett, life is fast enough to shoot down his jet and leave him stranded Behind Enemy Lines. Now life is anything but routine. Last week I was at the LFTN 25 Workshop put on by my good friend Nicole Sauce. While there, one of the fellow presenters was talking about applying permaculture in suburban settings. She had done an amazing job transforming her backyard into a productive, beautiful space. But when it came to the front yard? That's where the “Karens” and the HOA enforcers drew the line. Nicole pointed out to me, “You haven’t covered that in a while.” She's right, it’s time to revisit how to stick it to the rule-makers while still playing the game better than they do. Today, … Continue reading →

What are you spending your most precious commodity on? In a world obsessed with accumulation and consumption, there's one resource none of us can create more of – time. Jesse Cope challenges listeners to examine how they allocate this irreplaceable gift, particularly when it comes to relationships with God and family. The uncomfortable truth is that many of us claim we "don't have time" for meaningful connection while spending hours scrolling, streaming, and consuming content. We prioritize "me time" over the spouse we vowed to cherish and the children who desperately need our attention. This misalignment between stated values and actual behavior creates a template our children will either embrace or reject.Drawing from 1 Peter, Jesse reminds us that believers are "aliens" in this world – temporary residents behind enemy lines with an urgent mission. The persistent emptiness we feel despite worldly pleasures points to our design for something beyond this temporary existence. Our purpose isn't comfort or assimilation but reclaiming souls before our departure. The conversation shifts to America's Christian heritage, examining founding documents from the Mayflower Compact to the Constitution. Despite revisionist attempts to secularize our history, over 90% of Constitutional Convention delegates identified as Christians, with biblical references woven throughout our governmental foundation. How will you spend your remaining moments on this earth? Will your spouse and children want to replicate your example? Will you prioritize eternal values over temporary pleasures? The clock is ticking – what will you do with the time you've been given?Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show. We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.

Right off the bat, we learn about the unique role of enlisted entertainers during World War II, who were sent in Jeeps to the front lines to lift the spirits of soldiers with shows! Yup, you heard that right—think of the likes of Mickey Rooney entertaining troops instead of just making movies. It's a wild twist on history that not many folks know about, and we're here for it! The German Democratic Republic, or East Germany, was the frontline in the Cold War, packed with hundreds of thousands of Soviet and East German troops armed with the latest Warsaw Pact equipment, lined up along the 1,400 km Inner German Border. However, because of the repressive East German police state, little human intelligence about these forces reached the West. Who were they? Where were they located? What were they doing? How were they equipped? What were their intentions? NATO was lined up in West Germany to face these forces and relied on getting up-to-date intelligence to warn of any threat, 'Indicators of Hostility' that could be a precursor to an invasion. BRIXMIS, the British Commanders'-in-Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany, was on hand to provide that intelligence. Thanks to an obscure 1946 agreement between the British and Soviets that established 'liaison missions' in their respective zones of occupation, the British were able to send highly qualified military 'observers' into East Germany to roam (relatively) freely and keep an eye on what was going on. What started as 'liaison', a point of contact between the British and Soviet occupation forces, developed into a very sophisticated intelligence gathering operation, sending 'tours' out every day of the year, between 1946 and when the Mission closed in 1990. Andrew Long's BRIXMIS and the Secret Cold War: Intelligence Collection Operations Behind Enemy Lines in East Germany (Pen and Sword History, 2024) tells the story about these top-secret liaison tours. These tours were undertaken in high-performance, highly modified marked vehicles, with personnel in uniform and unarmed, apart from professional photographic equipment and occasionally some top-secret gadgets from the boffins back in the UK. They joined their French and American colleagues in snooping around the opposition, photographing military bases, equipment, and manoeuvres, and trying to evade capture by the secret police and counterintelligence units. They faced danger and violence daily, but thanks to their bravery and professionalism, the West had accurate and up to date information on what was happening in East Germany which help keep the peace all that time. This is the story of this little-known unit and their exploits behind enemy lines. Andrew Long, from Great Britain, is a military history researcher and author. His fascination with the Cold War began with a trip to West Berlin in 1986, traveling through Checkpoint Charlie to visit the East. Andrew's writing comes from a desire to make sense of an extremely complex period in modern history, weaving together inter-relating stories involving politics, ideologies, personalities, technological advances, and geography. There is still much to be told on this fascinating subject. After a successful career in marketing, Andrew relocated to Cornwall and took up writing full time. This week, we kick off a March-long salute to the dearly departed king of American screen acting as Hackmonth begins with a classic of the inspirational sports genre, the story of a man who moves to Hicktown, Indiana and whips a bunch of farm boys into state champions. It's 1986's Hoosiers, directed by David Anspaugh and starring Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper. While the circumstances surrounding this theme month are unquestionably sad, it's still a treat to watch one of the all-time great screen presences cook in some of his most acclaimed roles, and there's no question he's outstanding in this one. The three adult leads are all terrific in fact, lifting the movie above its genre-trappings. Is the movie enormously overrated by sports-inclined boomers? Yes, definitely, but that doesn't mean it's not a cozy comfort watch at the same time. Plus: Neither Hayl or J Mo actually watched this year's Oscars, but that doesn't stop us from having opinions on them! And Justin's back with another theatrical field report, this time having made it out to the cinema to see Osgood Perkins' Vancouver-shot Stephen King adaptation The Monkey. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Hoosiers is available on MGM+ at the moment north of the border, but... I dunno, check it out from the library, that's what I did. Other works discussed in this episode include Conclave, Nickel Boys, Megalopolis, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Challengers, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Behind Enemy Lines, Hustle, Blue Chips, Coach Carter, Friday Night Lights, Glory Road, Rudy and The Way Back. We'll be back next week as Hackmonth continues with a 1995 naval thriller starring king Gene alongside Denzel Washington in Tony Scott's Crimson Tide, which is available to stream on Disney+. The week after that it's Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, and we close out the month with Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums heading in to the pod-canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
We're back to wrap up our midweek contests vs. McNeese State and SLU, and preview the upcoming road series vs. the UC Irvine Anteaters. A fantastic WWII adventure: On June 16, 1944, the storied 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions accidentally dropped U.S. paratroopers off-target behind enemy lines in France near the ancient town of Graignes, Normandy, as part of the D-Day offensive. At great risk to themselves, including penalty of death, the 900 townspeople of Graignes determined to protect the paratroopers and fight the Nazis as a combined force, using the weapons the paratroopers had brought with them. What transpired could be the best WWII movie never made. Acclaimed U.S. military historian, Professor Stephen Rabe's own father was a paratrooper in Graignes. While he grew up hearing the story and meeting other surviving solders, it took Stephen over 60 years to research and write the story in his book, “The Lost Paratroopers of Normandy: A Story of Resistance, Courage, and Solidarity in a French Village.”Heroes Behind HeadlinesExecutive Producer Ralph PezzulloProduced & Engineered by Mike DawsonMusic provided by ExtremeMusic.com
