Today I'm delighted to chat with Matthew Kaufman from I Love Camp. He has spent more than three decades creating environments where children and staff thrive and he has done this as a camper, counselor, and now summer camp director.People learn, grow, and connect best in community settings where problem-solving, creativity, and play come first. Most workplaces, schools, and families stumble into community by accident, but camp builds it on purpose. It's a practice that can be learned and applied anywhere.Using these insights Matt has written a book called The Campfire Effect which explores the neuroscience behind what makes camp work. It examines five neurochemicals that drive human connection and shows how camp naturally creates the conditions for each one to flourish. Then it offers practical frameworks for applying these lessons to workplaces, classrooms, and homes. This isn't a book about summer camp. It's a book about belonging, using camp as the lens.5 Key Takeaways:Camp is school for relationships — The activities matter less than who you're doing them with. The real curriculum is learning how to be a good friend, teammate, and citizen.Stress + Support = Growth — Matt's core framework. Remove all struggle and kids become fragile; struggle without support leads to bullying. The sweet spot is challenge within a safe, supported environment.Camp levels the playing field — Unlike school, which has few "paths to dignity," camp offers dozens of ways to shine — chess, drama, sportsmanship, leadership — helping the invisible or left-out child find their place. The skills camp teaches are exactly what AI can't replace — Problem solving, interpersonal communication, genuine relationship-building — camp has been teaching these for decades, and they're now the most valuable skills in an AI world.Oxytocin is the secret ingredient — The Campfire Effect (Matt's book) explains the neuroscience: when kids feel emotionally and physically safe, oxytocin flows, trust builds, and real growth becomes possible. This isn't magic — it's science.Chapters:00:00 - The Importance of Relationships at Camp04:16 - Understanding the Role of Camp in Child Development13:06 - The Importance of Camp in Personal Development20:29 - The Campfire Effect: Understanding the Transformative Power of Camp25:22 - Understanding Camp Experiences28:42 - The Impact of Technology on Youth Development34:25 - The Impact of Social Media on Youthhttps://www.ilove.camphttps://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewjkaufmanhttps://www.instagram.com/mattlovescamp

Jewish life in polite Canada has become 'a horror show of hatred'

October 7 and the Gaza war radically changed the way many people around the world, including Diaspora Jews, viewed Israel. For Toronto-based journalist Jesse Brown, the turning point came not with Hamas' massacre itself, but with the domestic backlash that followed. “Canadians got angry with Jews after October 7, and the entire national discourse seemed to just turn against Jews in a way that I wouldn’t have imagined possible,” he told the Haaretz Podcast. Using police-reported hate crime statistics from Canada and the United States, Brown argues that a Jew in Canada is now about nine times more likely to be the victim of a hate crime than a Jew in the United States. Ironically, he explained to podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer, the progressive political atmosphere in Canada has made things worse for Jews, not better. Brown’s podcast series “What is Happening Here” documents the skyrocketing antisemitism targeting Jewish institutions and neighborhoods in Canada, including synagogues being shot at, firebombed or vandalized, and Jewish-owned businesses and individuals singled out for harassment campaigns. Brown contends that debates over whether specific chants or actions are “anti-Israel,” “anti-Zionist” or “antisemitic” obscure the practical impact on Jewish communities. While he stops short of equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism, Brown said that contemporary anti-Zionism is “just as dangerous to Jews.” Read more: Canadian Watchdog Reports Record Number of Antisemitic Incidents in 2025 Canadian-Jewish Groups Decry Efforts by pro-Palestinian Groups to Strip Jewish Schools of Their Charity Status Toronto Police Arrest Suspect in Passover Shooting at Jewish-owned Restaurant Campaign Targeting Jewish Children's Summer Camps in Canada Condemned as AntisemiticSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send a textThere are summer camp fanatics, individuals who attribute their best qualities to the counselors they had, the songs they sang, the skits they performed, and the friendships they made in mosquito-infested cabins in the woods near a lake. My guest this episode, Matthew Kaufman, is one such individual. Matt attended summer camp, was a counselor, and, eventually, became a camp director. But he did not stop there. Matt sought to understand the science behind the positive experiences that he and other people were having at summer camps in hopes of bringing those experiences to more people in more locations. The result was his book, The Campfire Effect: How to Engineer Belonging in a Disconnected World. Matt and I discuss his book and things that you can do to bring the summer camp experience to the kids in your life. More information about Matt and his book is at talkingaboutkids.com.

Jewish summer camps in Canada respond to new “antisemitic” boycott campaign

Just over four months from now, thousands of campers and staff will be heading out to Jewish summer camps from coast to coast. But the lead-up to the annual countdown for camp has being threatened by a new boycott campaign from a coalition of pro-Palestine groups who hope to cripple 17 high profile camps over their support for Israel and hiring of Israeli staff. The campaign was launched Feb. 4. They released a report online urging official camping associations in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes to de-certify the accreditation of these Jewish camps. They also asked the federal tax department to strip the camps of their charitable status because the programming supports “a genocidal state”. The campaign came to light ahead of the Family-Day long weekend weekend, on Friday Feb. 13, afer the Ontario Camps Association released a blistering statement condemning the targeting of Jewish campers and staffers. The board also denounced the singling out for discrimination of its own executive director, Joy Levy. Levy was accused of being a “Zionist who publicly supports Israel, its military, and promotes anti-Palestinian racism,” among other things.  While public reaction has been swift from some Jewish advocates and some allies, none of the individual Jewish summer camp directors we contacted responded to our request for interviews, except for Camp Northland, who declined to comment. It appears the camps have decided to not amplify the boycott's impact. But on today's episode of The CJN's flagship podcast “North Star”, host Ellin Bessner gets reaction from Risa Epstein, the CEO of Young Judaea Canada, an umbrella group for nine Zionist camps operating in Canada, and also from Simon Wolle, the CEO of B'nai Brith Canada, who previously was director of Camp Northland. You'll also hear what Joy Levy had to say. In this episode, we sit down with Tonya Jennings and Nathan Wright from Baker College (now with a mascot: The Bees!) to explore how the institution is creating new paths for education, especially for returning students, first-gen learners, and working professionals. We kick off with a look at their innovative "Return to the Hive" program, which offers institutional debt forgiveness for former students who left Baker due to unpaid balances. Half the debt is forgiven after one term, and the rest after completing a second semester. This initiative is specifically designed to remove financial barriers and re-engage students who've been out of the system for two years or more.We shift into how Baker supports first-generation college students through its "First-Gen Bees" program, which offers guidance and community for both students and staff who are navigating college without the benefit of a parent who's been through the process. Tonya and Nathan emphasize the college's “students first” culture, which drives many of their initiatives. The conversation moves to flexible programs like the new Accelerated One-Year MBA. Fully online and built for busy professionals, it allows students to move through coursework every four weeks and earn a degree in a single year. That flexibility extends to their continuing education offerings as well. Baker boasts over 1,400 non-credit courses, covering everything from trade skills like HVAC and CDL training to lifestyle topics like gardening in small spaces. The college also partners with local employers to address skill gaps, such as creating Spanish-for-manufacturing training to help teams communicate more effectively.Looking toward the future, Baker is doubling down on high-demand fields like healthcare and technology. Nursing remains a huge focus with no waitlists across campuses, and AI integration is quickly becoming a staple within programs and classrooms. The staff shares how Baker is embracing AI not as a threat but as a tool to enhance learning and career readiness, ensuring students are equipped to use it ethically and effectively. We also hear about their summer programs for middle and high schoolers, offering structured academic engagement during the break. These camps are expanding and serve as an important on-ramp for future learners. We close with a fun segment on favorite childhood books, giving the audience a peek at the personalities behind the professionals.Baker has campuses in Royal Oak, Owosso, and online.Learn more at www.baker.edu.00:00 – Return to the Hive Debt Forgiveness02:11 – What Makes the Program Unique04:08 – Supporting First-Generation Students05:17 – Accelerated One-Year MBA06:08 – Continuing Ed & Trades Training08:02 – Summer Camps for Youth09:16 – Workforce Trends & AI Integration12:26 – AI's Role in Student Learning12:52 – Fishbowl Question: Childhood Books14:55 – How to Connect with Baker College Learn more about the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce: https://www.royaloakchamber.com/Connect with our hosts:Jon Gay from JAG in Detroit Podcasts - http://www.jagindetroit.com/Lisa Bibbee from Century 21 Northland - http://soldbylisab.com/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
