Over the past number of years, there's been a dramatic decrease in the amount of time children spend being active. In particular, teenage girls 'fall off a cliff' when they get to secondary school. The inactive teenagers are putting themselves at risk of conditions like osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes, and it's something that all of us have a part to play in preventing. Niall Moyna, Professor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Dublin City University, joined Dermot and Dave to explain the impact of low-activity on our children and the small steps we can all take to reverse it. [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/01/19133041/NiallMoyna_1901.mp3"][/audio] Niall will be speaking at HealthFest, a free event tailored for teenagers that's taking place on Wednesday 27th of January. Speakers include Niall, Greg O'Shea and our own Dermot Whelan. For more, check their website.

I Could Never Do That

Adam Sud has certainly lived a lifetime in his 32 short years. This podcast is called "I Could Never Do That" and it's appropriate to get to know Adam because: 1) I'm not sure how many of us could comeback from the depths of despair in which he found himself as a clinically depressed, morbidly obese, young adult addicted to fast food and pills. 2) How many of us could then build the new life that he has built in the last five years; a life that is full of inspiration, conviction, and purpose?   Ironically, it took a life-threatening overdose to save him. His journey to recovery led to a 37-Day stint in rehab where, to his surprise, he was also told that he had heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes. Determined not to medicate himself for the rest of his life, Adam made his recovery an inside job by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. The results were rapid and astounding. In 10 months, he lost 100 pounds and was able to toss every one of his meds.  Now, in 2017, Adam is a featured world-wide speaker, reliving his painful story that is now so full of light and hope. If you struggle with any disease, addiction, or illness, you are not alone and all hope is not lost. Take refuge in Adam's journey from pills to plants.    Tags and References:  Article I recently wrote about Adam in Austin Fit Magazine  Adam's Plant-Based Addict Facebook Page Adam's Plant-Based Addict Instagram Page HealthFest Engine 2 Diet Rip Esselstyn Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, MD John Mackey Whole Foods Market Dr. Michael Klaper, MD Dick Beardsley Doug Lisle - The Pleasure Trap Simon Sinek Plant Stock Forks Over Knives T. Sid Garza-Hillman is one of the world's great bald plant-based podcasters of Jewish origin. He's also a remarkably savvy and sane health coach, and a funny and frank philosopher of what constitutes a good life. We met in person in Marshall, TX, during Healthfest, and found ourselves agreeing on lots of things that almost nobody agrees with us on. So deciding we were kindred spirits, we planned a podcast conversation around the state of plant-based practice and advocacy in 2017. Oh, and Sid gave me a copy of his book, Approaching the Natural, which is sized conveniently to fit in a back jeans pocket. So we talked about his general philosophy of health behavior change as well.

Making choices through mindset is our focus in today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast – this one’s a special treat for you! While we were in Marshall Texas for Healthfest, we sat down with Howard Jacobson (from the Plant Yourself Podcast), Josh LaJaunie (you may have seen him on the cover of Runner’s World Magazine) and Sid Garza-Hillman (from the Approaching The Natural Podcast) for an unscripted, unplanned roundtable conversation. You should be warned that we were literally sitting in a warehouse room while it was pouring rain on the tin roof.  It was very interesting to see the different perspectives of all these great coaches on the subject of mindset. It is clear that mindset, accountability and practical knowledge is something we all feel our clients need more of. Whether you have tried every diet out there, have begun your plant-based journey or are ready to take someone under your wing, we’re sure you’ll find motivation and inspiration about mindset, which will help you and others along with transformation of any kind. Ed and Amanda Smith are the co-founders of Healthfest, a three-day annual event in a small Texas town that's become an unlikely hub of plant-based nutrition in the United States. Marshall, Texas, population 27,000, is smack in the middle of the "stroke belt." Where beef is king, hunting is a rite of passage into manhood, and if it ain't deep-fried, it ain't food. And there, where Ed served as mayor, is where they decided to bring plant-based knowledge and practice.

In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Ed and Amanda Smith about creating community through Healthfest. Ed is known as the Vegan Mayor of Marshall Texas. From 2000-2008, Ed was the Commissioner and Mayor and in 2012 he was re-elected once again. Ed is president and owner of Smith Resources, Inc. and has had many other business ventures during his career. Ed has served as an officer and board member on many organizations including the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Legislative Fund and Marshall Firefighters Retirement and Relief Fund. In 2011 Ed and his wife Amanda formed Get Healthy Marshall, a non-profit organization created for the purpose of educating the local community of the health benefits derived from a whole foods plant-based diet. Each year, Get Healthy Marshall, brings HealthFest to Marshall, a weekend event they co-founded, where individuals from across the country can hear world class lectures from leading experts in the fields of medicine, nutrition, and fitness, together with cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs. In an effort to spread the message of a whole foods plant based diet, Ed and Amanda acquired VegWorld Magazine in 2015, a digital interactive online magazine dedicated to promoting a healthy whole foods plant-based lifestyle where Amanda assumes the tireless role as editor. Today we talk about the inspiration that led Amanda and Ed on this journey and the events that made them the whole food plant-based vegan activists they are today. We explore the challenges and triumphs of creating such a tremendous influence on Texas communities and have a little bit of fun along the way.
