“Coaches are so much more than just a program. It's someone that listens, someone that has been there (oftentimes) and they can drawn on both academia and peer reviewed studies, and also from our experience and what we know works, like evidence -based practices…” — Adam Mills Hey listeners, please meet my friend and cycling coach, Adam Mills! We've known each other for over 20 years, from the early 2000s, when he first began his cycling coaching career as an intern at Carmichael Training Systems and I first began my cycling-racing career. Through the years we've stayed in touch as fellow bike racers, fellow midwest-raised folks, our mutual respect for one another as we've both evolved and grown has always been present, and now I'm once again fortunate to call him my coach. After spinning my wheels the last few years through injuries and self-coaching, I am back under his “supervision” and I benefit tremendously from his oversight, his experience and his willingness to teach me what I don't know, but need to know ;) Tune in to this episode as we talk about what's on the cutting edge forefront of cycling coaching, performance, fitness, technology and of course, AI! If you have follow-up questions for Adam, please visit his website and reach out to get answers. From his coaching website Source Endurance: “Adam Mills, MSED, RCEP — Adam earned his Bachelor's in Exercise Science at the University of Kansas in 2003 and immediately began his career at Carmichael Training Systems as a cycling coach. He returned to the University of Kansas, completing his Master's in Clinical Exercise Physiology in 2005. During his graduate studies, Adam was a regular on the Dean's List, and a recipient of multiple academic scholarships. During his studies, Adam discovered his passion for both coaching cycling and competition, which quickly led him to the elite ranks of cycling. Adam has competed with top ranked amateur and collegiate cycling clubs since 2001. Adam has competed in international competition, countless NRC races, innumerable elite races, and national championships in many different disciplines of the sport. Adam's true talent comes as a cycling coach with his ability to combine his vast experience with his knowledge of sport. He is indeed a student of science, sport, athletic performance, strategy, and tactics, continually educating himself by keeping up to date with current trends and methods in sport. This week we loved chatting with two more researchers from Deakin University's Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN): Associate Professor Megan Teychenne and Dr Niamh Mundell. Megan's PhD is in Behavioural Epidemiology and she's currently an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow at IPAN. For more than 15 years Megan has investigated the role of health-related behaviours (e.g. physical activity, sedentary behaviour) in the prevention and treatment of mental health conditions (particularly depression and anxiety), with a focus on vulnerable population groups including socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and women (pregnant and postpartum). She has played a pivotal role in advancing knowledge of the field, with her research cited in several international evidence briefings (e.g. British Heart Foundation, The World Health Organisation), and in her role as associate editor for the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity. Megan actively contributes to raising public awareness about the importance of physical activity for improving mental health, having been a guest on several national radio and TV programs, as well as her research being profiled in several hundreds of popular media articles worldwide. Niamh Mundell is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Exercise Physiology within Deakin University's School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. She is also a Non-Executive Director at Exercise and Sports Science Australia and practices as an accredited exercise physiologist. She has a PhD in the field of exercise for cognition during ageing and cancer survival, (Deakin University) and Master of Exercise Physiology (Victoria University, Australia). Her research primarily focuses on exercise physiology, with interests in mental and cognitive health during ageing and chronic disease and improving the exercise physiology industry for clinicians and patients. Niamh's research integrates clinical exercise physiology skills and experience to focus on improving the way clinical outcomes are captured and the optimal modes of delivery to support value-based care in clinical exercise physiology practice. In this episode, I am excited to share my conversation with the co-founders of LiveGood, an organic nutritional supplement company. I am excited because helping others live inspired and levelling up their performance is a mission of mine and I believe the mission of LiveGood helps with that. We have so many choices to make bad or negative whether it be food or thoughts. We have the ability to choose life! In this episode, we talk about the pain points the Goodkin's saw in the current healthcare system or as Ryan puts it, “the system has created a sick care model where people get trapped, even the practitioners are trapped and many of them are unaware.” This is a strong statement but one that he points to as motivation to make a change in other people's lives. We also, talk about how we can take our healthcare into our own hands and not simply rely on the system to handle it for us. We discuss how education is key and why supplementation is vital to living healthy lifestyles today more than ever. We break down their clean organic supplement line and how to best optimize them in our daily routines. livegood.com/timdouglas Ryan has been a pharmacist for over 13 years but his view of healthcare has shifted and he no longer finds reward in the traditional pharmacy setting. Ryan has a doctorate in pharmacy and he was a multiple pharmacy owner for many years until he decided to leave it behind and focus on preventive medicine thru awareness, education and action. The last part of that statement is at his core, the movement and transfer of energy into positive action is what he believes is the difference in functional medicine. Ryan lives this lifestyle to the fullest, he makes a point to be an altruistic leader by example and he plans to never stop learning. If Ryan could be granted one sweeping change, he would wish for people to be more engaged in managing their health, treating their bodies with respect and dignity and developing lasting, lifelong habits that can be used to set good examples for those around them. Ryan has said, “Our messaging from the top down is all wrong, we have been misled and body, mind, spirit and our natural surroundings are paying the ultimate price.” Lisa graduated with honors from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Psychology, and a Minor in Nutrition. She then continued her studies at the University of Florida, where she graduated with honors, a Master's of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology. Lisa is one of the co-founders of LiveGood, as well as the team's Director of Product Education. In addition, she is an IIN Certified Holistic Health Coach, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, and a Certified Indoor Cycling Instructor. When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, Lisa not only teaches people how to maximize their health and wellness, she lives it! From the healthy foods she intentionally chooses to cook, eat and feed her family, to the way she designs her fitness routine for herself, her clients and her family. Lisa focuses on minimizing stress and maximizing productivity and loves spending time outdoors with her family. She is a living example of what is possible when we make the decision to give our bodies what they need! It's important to have leaders who live what they teach; it's Lisa's passion for helping others that truly makes her so special. With over 20 years of experience in the health and wellness industry, Lisa knows what works and what doesn't work for people of all levels of health and fitness. She is committed to helping people understand how their bodies work and what can make them perform at peak levels. I hope you will check out their great products and see for yourself the goodness of LiveGood! timdouglasinspires.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theinspiredway/message

With a Master's degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology, a Bachelor degree in Exercise and Sports Science, a Diploma of Pilates Movement Therapy and full Stott Pilates instructor trainer certification, Raphael is host of the Pilates Elephants podcast, along with co-host Cloe Bunter. In this episode, Raphael talks to us about the phases of focus change that Pilates has gone through since its inventor Joseph Hubertus Pilates first developed what he called "Contrology" in the early 20th century: 1960's - Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara operate their studio on Eighth Avenue in New York 1970's - the era of Romana Kryzanowska (one of Joseph's students) 1980's - Frank Philip Friedman and Gail Eisen (two of Romana's students) publish the first modern book on Pilates: The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning 1990's -  A study by Profesor Paul Hodges of Queensland University Australia on deep abdominal muscle the transversus abdominis (TrA) coins use of the term 'core stability' and the idea that the “drawing in” of this muscle during exercise could provide protection against back pain. Using this information, Contemporary Pilates is born.    Raphael talks us through the misconceptions that emerged with the era of 'Contemporary Pilates', and explains how pre-1990s Pilates had no mention of 'core stability' or focus on individual muscles. In showing the evolution of Pilates, he draws many parallels to the evolution of soft tissue and manual therapy. Many of the concepts introduced in the late 1990's regarding posture, alignment and their proposed connection with pain have since proved to be less valuable than once considered, if not plain wrong. Does it mean we have to throw everything we have ever learnt away? Of course not, we just need to refocus slightly and continue the great work we can do.   Raphael is an awesome educator and we offer our sincerest thanks to him for being our guest in this episode. Over the past number of years, there's been a dramatic decrease in the amount of time children spend being active. In particular, teenage girls 'fall off a cliff' when they get to secondary school. The inactive teenagers are putting themselves at risk of conditions like osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes, and it's something that all of us have a part to play in preventing. Niall Moyna, Professor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Dublin City University, joined Dermot and Dave to explain the impact of low-activity on our children and the small steps we can all take to reverse it. Can you stop exercise without suffering withdrawals? Do you avoid social occasions because of your exercise commitments? Do you feel addicted to exercise and are looking for a way out? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions you may be trending towards exercise addiction. In this episode of me&my health up we discuss exercise addiction with elite athlete Stephanie Keily. Stephanie first represented Australia in gymnastics at the age of 12 years and did so for the next 15 years until she recently retired from the sport in 2019 after winning a silver medal at the World Championships. Stephanie shares with us her journey as an elite athlete training 25 hours per week on top of her school commitments combined with her passion for sports science as to how she successfully transitioned out.More about Stephanie:With a Masters Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology, a Bachelor's Degree in Sports and Exercise Science along with 18 years of competing in gymnastics, Stephanie has had over a decade of first-hand experience surrounding musculoskeletal rehabilitation, high performance training and physiological principles. Beginning her journey as an Artistic gymnast, Stephanie transitioned over to Aerobic gymnastics by the age of 8 and earned her first selection into the Australian National team at age 12. Since then, she has been fortunate enough to travel the world competing at various European and world championships, with her best placing being at the 2019 world championships where she placed 2nd in the open women's category.Stephanie's passion for working with musculoskeletal conditions as well as athletes, comes from her own heart-felt experiences of setbacks due to potential career ending injuries and surgeries. Under-going simultaneous bilateral ankle reconstructions at the age of 15, and missing a whole season of international competitions sparked a passion for her to educate herself surrounding the use of exercise as a form of prevention, rather than just a cure. Alongside her own personal experiences, Stephanie has worked with a wide variety of patients ranging from aged care and NDIS to athletes and chronic pain cases. Since retiring from elite aerobic gymnastics at the duration of 2019, Stephanie's new passion is to educate others about the benefits of using exercise as a tool for improving performance, chronic health conditions and overall health. She believes in equipping every client with top-quality education and technical training in order to produce the most desirable outcome, personalised for each client. Stephanie leads every session with a smile and loves to learn from her clients about topics that they are passionate about, just as she loves to share her passion for exercise with them! I loved hearing Craig Lewin's Marathon Swim Story. Now a triple crown finisher, Craig was one of the first Americans to travel to England earlier this year, despite the pandemic and the 14 day quarantine period, in order to successfully swim across the English Channel. As Craig attests, it's valuable to have a coach keep you accountable as you pursue your swimming goals. I once heard it said, as children we have role models, tutors, and coaches whether in sport or education, but somehow after we get out of school, we think we have everything figured out and rarely do people pursue coaches. If you're striving to be more, I highly recommend connecting with someone who clicks with you. If you want to see if we click, book a conversation with me at http://intrepidwater.com.In his own words: Craig Lewin is a USA Swimming Coach, ASCA Level 2 Coach and a US Masters Swimming Level 1 & 2 coach with over 10 years of swim coaching experience. He is a graduate of Boston College with degrees in Economics and Sociology, a graduate of Salem State College with a BS in Sport Movement Science and a graduate of Northeastern University with an MS in Clinical Exercise Physiology. Craig swam collegiately for the Division 1 Men's Swimming & Diving team at Boston College. He recently completed his Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming in July of this year with his English Channel Swim. Craig has done several marathon swims, including the Boston Light Swim, Swim Across the Sound 25km and the 25km swim at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships in 2005 & 2006. He was a support swimmer for two separate English Channel swim attempts and recently completed his own solo swim across the English Channel in 2020. Along with marathon swimming, Craig has competed in triathlon at a high level and qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2008.Questions, comments, feedback, or if you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, email me! mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming Collective Music credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.
