In today's episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Howard Jacobson, PhD all about Staying Motivated In Tough Times. It seems that people are finding it harder to stay motivated to live healthy, stay happy and balance life. Howie talks about connecting motivation to transformation. We explore different options for higher level motivations, how they work, what they look like in practice, and how we can connect with them and use them. We've all heard the phrase, “You can't change others. You can only change yourself.” It's really frustrating when the people we care about are behaving in self-defeating ways (especially with their health and well-being), and when we try to talk to them about it, we just make things worse. Our guest today, Howie Jacobson, is here to tell you, you CAN change people - not by force, shame, or guilt - but by becoming a supportive ally. You may know Howie as the long-time host of the Plant Yourself podcast, and he's also the co-author of some groundbreaking books including Whole by T.Colin Campbell, Proteinaholic with Dr. Garth Davis, and Sick to Fit with Josh Lajaunie. His most recent book, “You CAN Change Other People: The Four Steps to Help Employees, Colleagues—Even Family—Up Their Game,” co-authored with Peter Bregman, outlines four steps to helping people change. If you care about people around you who are eating poorly, not taking care of themselves, or not reaching their potential, Howie is here to help. Episode Timestamps 11:22 People don't resist change. They resist BEING changed. 12:55 What does it mean to really help people change their behavior? “We can use techniques and approaches to allow people to make different decisions.” 14:05 Step 1: Shift from a Critic to an Ally - "I'm here to help you if you want my help." -empathize -express confidence in them -ask for permission 22:50 Be prepared for them to say, “No thanks.” 25:25 Step 2: Find the Positive Outcome - What would you like to happen? Josh LaJaunie was born and raised in south Louisiana. He grew up hunting, fishing, drinking, eating, playing football, and getting fat. In early 2011, he found himself tipping the scales at over 400 lbs. He's since lost 200 lbs, become a badass ultrarunner, and is now exclusively a plant-based, plant-powered athlete. I met Josh through our friend Rich Roll and we hit it off immediately. I don't see or talk to Josh too often but when we connect, it's always epic. We had some audio difficulties with this episode but I encourage you to power through-- Josh is one of my favorite guests to date.

Endgame 2050 Description: What will the future be like in the year 2050? A mere three decades away, most of us hope to still be around. So, what kind of future are we riding into? ENDGAME 2050 gives us a glimpse into that future, and it does not look good. Humanity has backed itself into an ecological endgame as we approach mid-century. Featuring musician Moby along with leading scientists, ENDGAME 2050 lays out the reality that, unless we act urgently now, we are hastening our own destruction. Dr. Sofia Pineda Ochoa statement: I was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. I attended medical school there and, as a student, my dream was to help people as a doctor. I devoted a full decade of my life for medical training in that pursuit. Over time, however, my perspective changed on what I believe is most urgent. I have come to understand that humans - myself included - are literally destroying the planet on which we live. Humanity is not only making the planet uninhabitable for human civilization, but also for countless other species with whom we share this world. I believe this is a crime like no other and feel a deep sense of concern, in particular, for all the other animals who are being decimated by human activities. I made ENDGAME 2050 because I want people to wake up to the gravity of the situation before it's too late. I think many environmental films sugarcoat our reality and the extent of changes needed. They sometimes don't want to make people too uncomfortable. But I think that does a grave disservice to the audience and the planet. I wanted this film to clearly lay out the dire situation in which we now find ourselves, and the responsibility for these global problems that we all bear. I think we owe it to the planet, other species, and ourselves to not bury our heads in the sand. My guest today is Josh LaJaunie. Josh not only has an incredible story, but an incredible heart. There is no doubt in my mind you all will instantly connect and fall in love with the man Josh is. His authenticity and ability to express how he feels and where he is at, with his Bayou accent will have you listening to every word. And that is great, because Josh has been through some INCREDIBLE changes and feats in his life, so you want to listen. He was born and raised in south louisiana. He grew up hunting, fishing, drinking, eating, playing football, and getting fat. Ultimately he found himself tipping the scales at over 400 lbs in early 2011. He has since lost 200 lbs, developed a love for running-running over 10 ultra marathons & even placing first place, and is now exclusively a plant-based, plant-powered, aspiring athlete. He is now on a mission to share his journey to help us all take that next step to make healthier choices. This episode will have you crying with us and taking away SO many tools and shifts to help you anywhere you are on your journey. What you'll hear in this episode: *The 1st 60 minutes are us doing REAL talk - just fair warning we didn't take this out. -Josh shares so authentically where he is at right now. It's been a tough season for him, since Covid, and this past year. He shares what's been going on and how he is human through it all. -That no matter what we have accomplished in the past, that doesn't mean we don't go through seasons that suck, that one thing after another brings us down. -I highly recommend starting HERE -listening to us do the REAL talk -and then taking some extra time to hear more of Josh's story & tips from his journey of being 400+lbs to becoming an ultra runner, to turning to a plant based diet. *About an hour in we dive into his story - He's been trying not to be fat his whole life. -He's been a typical south Louisiana kid who grew up eating fried deer meat sandwiches, skinning hogs, drinking a 12 pack of Bud & some whiskey and maybe even some chemicals to stay up all night hunting or doing crazy stuff, before he shifted. *The Crescent City Classic 10k - the first race he did and how he got started running, ran that race at 320/330lbs in 1hr and 43minutes. *How his Dad's struggling with mental health was an impetus for change. *That first month he started working out - scale said ‘Error' - meaning over 400lbs -He started jogging around 380lbs, working out at the gym, ran the race after losing 50lbs *He had to convince his family with his ACTIONS - that this weight loss, running, and lifestyle was real. -Then they started to come over to his side and shift themselves. Now all his family started to change and they all lost weight and have kept it off. -How giving up meat and dairy was the final 1-2 punch to not only lose the weight, but to keep it off!! (1hr 15 min) *Josh shares some great whole food plant based resources - the book Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition and Finding Ultra by Rich Roll *The Pleasure Trap - Josh shares an idea from Dr. Doug Lyles - it takes 20 days to adapt to new foods, like oreos to broccoli. (1hr 25min) *“Rather than think of it, I need to avoid these foods, understand their power, and RESPECT them.” To help you get through cravings or food that has power over you. - A powerful idea from his friend David Clark (1hr 30min) *And SO MUCH MORE Find Josh on IG @joshlajaunie or his website www.joshlajaunie.com to learn more about Josh and continue to follow along on his journey.

Rip catches up with longtime plantstrong pal, Josh LaJaunie, in a moving conversation about remaining resilient, determined, and focused even when life hands you profoundly difficult situations. Many know Josh as a former 400+ pound football player-turned-plantstrong ultra runner. He has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and even the cover of Runner's World Magazine celebrating his transformation, as well as his desire to help others. He wrote his book, Sick to Fit and even started the Missing Chins Run Group to motivate others to reclaim their lives with the power and life-saving intervention of plants.  As a Louisiana bayou native, Josh is a cajun, through-and-through. Unfortunately, his home and the trailer park he manages were obliterated by Hurricane Ida. Today, he speaks with Rip about the ongoing effects, devastation, and rebuilding efforts he, his family, and his community are facing. The media has moved on, but the pain and reality have not. Josh shares his story with Rip, as well as his hope for remaining buoyant in a time when the hurricanes and floods have sunk nearly everything. There isn't a more real and raw human than Josh LaJaunie and we appreciate him taking the time to talk on the phone in the middle of his stress and chaos.  As they said in the interview, “quitting is optional,” and we know Josh won't quit, but we're also here to spread the word and extend a loving plantstrong hand to a friend in need. If you're overweight or obese... If you're constantly tired, bloated, constipated, achy, sluggish, depressed, or anxious... If you're diabetic or pre-diabetic... If your doctor keeps warning you about the risk of cancer, heart disease, or other lifestyle-reversible calamity... If you're constantly worried about your blood pressure, weight, insomnia, eating habits... But you still find it next to impossible to stick to a healthy diet, exercise, and lifestyle plan... Then you might be going about things the wrong way. Let's face it. Despite a flood of information and advice, we're getting sicker and fatter all the time. That's because the vast majority of “conventional” advice is outdated, wrong-headed, and just plain ineffective. Within this storm of bad news and bad advice, there's a growing tribe of outliers who have managed to lose hundreds of pounds, reverse “impossible to cure” diseases, and even - to their own shock and delight - become fit and high-performing athletes. Their stories don't get a lot of media attention because they aren't selling anything. No pills, powders, or potions. No expensive workout gadgets. No late-night informercial magic formulas. They simply rediscovered some basic, natural truths about the human animal. What we're designed to eat. How we're designed to move. And how we're meant to think and feel.  When we get away from our natural heritage, we suffer. When we return to it, we thrive. Listen to Sick to Fit to discover how Josh LaJaunie went from a 420-pound food addict to the cover of Runner's World magazine, as well as live appearances on Good Morning America and The Today Show.

I talk with southern Louisiana-based, former 400-pound guy-turned-distance runner, advocate for better health, and now crusader for Black people's rights, Josh LaJaunie.  Josh made a name for himself by losing 200 pounds, becoming plant-based, running marathons, and founding the Missing Chins group to support others navigating the same journey.  He has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, the Rich Roll podcast, and numerous other shows and wrote an excellent guidebook toward healthier eating called “Sick to Fit.”  Along the way he also connected and formed a bond with David Clark and appeared on WASP episode #64, definitely worth a re-listen.  Josh has since re-focused his energy toward advocating for Black lives, and examining his own connection to racism in the world he grew up in with the good ol' boys in the bayou.  So we discuss Ahmaud Arbury, George Floyd, the racism he still sees in New Orleans, and the Black Men Run group which encourages health and wellness among African-American men and has chapters all over the country.  I hope you'll enjoy this conversation with this energetic dynamo for social change. Please contact Bill for more info about the We Are Superman Leadville Ten Warriors at silly_billy@msn.com, on Facebook, or Instagram @stahlorJosh LaJaunie:joshlajaunie.comFacebookInstagram @joshlajaunie"Sick to Fit" on AmazonBlack Men Run: blackmenrun.com and on Instagram @blackmenrun504th Run Crew on Instagram @the504th

This is the final episode of the show! After 128 episodes, I have decided to practice that I preach, and make the tough call on priorities and pressures in my life, which means this show will be setting with the sun today. Whether that's forever or for now is not relevant because "forever" is not happening today. With all the demands on my time, I have been facing my own burnout – something I've had as a central theme in many episodes in this show. To protect and love myself, I've taken an inventory of all the things that I am committed to, where they are in the grand scheme of building toward my goals, whether they've served their purpose, and how I might be able to move forward without them. Though it was a hard decision I've grappled with for several months, ending the show here made a lot of sense. Do a Day is not going anywhere, however, with all the resources at your fingertips, as ever. You can still get the book in paperback, Kindle, Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook and more. You can still do the Do a Day Masterclass, or sign up for 1-on-1 coaching with me. And the entire back catalog of episodes of the show will still be available for you to go back, listen to, and grow from. With all the stories and inspiration in the 127 episodes that I've released before this final one, I know there is at least one spark that every person in the world could use to start the flame that lets you Go Out and Do It! Respect for all my past guests: Season 1 I kicked the show off sharing the story of Do a Day. Charlie Gilkey shares about how being smart makes you strong. Evan Ruggiero reminds us through his cancer batter that rising up even when half of your world vanishes is possible. Amy Schuber taught us that you are the inspiration you seek. Ryan Caligiuri shared his mantra that there are no set backs, only set ups for what's next. One of my favorite artists, MC YOGI, talked about how all things grow in darkness Anne Sugar shared her battle with cancer as a way to see how you can trust your body even when it betrays you. Chris Wirth hit on his message of never quitting on living the life you deserve. David Ralph reminded us about the power in our lives if we connect the dots. Claude Silver shared her story (for the first time) of why she is who she is today and how that's showed her the importance of Heart in leadership. Elizabeth McCourt talked about the empowerment we can take from building our own resilience. Josh LaJaunie shared his story of overcoming extreme obesity--not just for himself, but for the world around him. Michael Nulty talked about his multiple suicide attempts and how he found rebirth out of depression. Mark Metry shared the importance of taking responsibility for your life and what you can achieve as a new person. My good friend, Aaron Keith Hawkins, talked about how we need to have influence over ourselves if we want to influence anyone else. Kelsey Abbott helped us Find Our Awesome through self-confidence and curiosity. She also gave me a quote I've used almost daily, "What you I say is about me. What you hear is about you." Dorie Clark reminds us of the important of perseverance and consistency if we want to achieve our greatest goals. Sonya Looney, world female mountain bike endurance champion, was just awesome, but had a key message around vulnerability and honesty with ourselves. She also gave me another gem of an idea around being stuck. Rather than being negative about the feeling, she recognizes it's a sign of something big being about to happen. Tim Fargo talked about the humility and balance we can find in unexpected places like failure. The amazing Dr. Jason Brooks shared the importance of being dedicated to finding your purpose and its transformative power on our lives. Jen Arnold shared her story around food and her weight and how that inspired her to change how we look at wellness and knowing ourselves. Lee Havern shared how he overcome depression and recognized the interconnectedness between mental and physical wellness. Emmitt Muckles left us charged up and recognizing that prosperity has nothing to do with money. Terri Levine, who lives in extreme, debilitating pain, showed how you can still find power and heart and use that to create something. Amazing things!   Dr. Ted Barnett, also known as “Dr. Veggie,” joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room™ podcast to talk about the dramatic improvements he’s seen in patients after little more than two weeks. “Ultimately, the truth comes from within. It's not something we find from the outside and bring into our lives. It's something that was always there that we just discover.”David ClarkOn May 21, 2020, the world lost a treasure.A beloved, 2-time RRP alumni, David Clark was one of the most courageous, resilient and authentic human beings I've ever met. A force for positive change. A model of service. The epitome of transformation, embodied. A loyal friend to many. And a man blessed with a preternatural gift for igniting the best in everyone he touched.Succumbing after complications incident to a herniated disc surgery, a chapter ends far too soon. But the story behind this accomplished ultra-endurance athlete, bestselling author, and father of three is a legend that will continue to be told -- and will never be forgotten.Today we honor the life and legacy of Dave Clark.Dave's steel was forged from hardship -- periodic homelessness and a poverty both financial and educational. Adulthood found him descending into the firm grip of alcoholism. He ate recklessly. He drank and drugged himself into oblivion. And continued his downward spiral until he was utterly lost. Completely alone. And hopeless.Tipping the scales at 320 pounds, Dave finally met his breaking point. Summing a will of superhuman proportions, he ushered the courage to finally face his demons. Hence began a process of implausible personal transformation. It's a staggering journey that would ultimately lead to breathtaking feats that defy possibility. And a laudable call to service that rivals anyone I've ever met.Dave didn’t just drop 150 pounds on a plant-based diet. Nor did he celebrate with a simple marathon. Instead, Dave would go on to on to crush a relentless list of the world's most challenging ultra-marathons, from Badwater to Leadville. He ran the Boston Marathon course four times without stopping. And he even ran across the entire United States. With uncompromising vulnerability, Dave recounts his inconceivable arc in his first book, Out There. In Broken Open, he faces the dark side of taking athleticism too far. Released just two weeks ago, Eat Sh*t And Die boldly tackles food addiction head on.I can't bring Dave back. Nor can I begin to measure his positive impact on myself and countless others. What I can do is honor his life and legacy. So today, RRP alums Mishka Shubaly and Josh LaJaunie -- both close friends of Dave -- join me to eulogize him, followed by a re-release of my first conversation with Dave, recorded in November, 2014 (RRP #113).Please Donate: To help alleviate the financial burden on Dave's family, Mishka, Josh and I created a GoFundMe (actually Mishka did all the work). Anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. To learn more and donate, click here.#WeAreDavidClark: Mishka, Josh and I invite you to celebrate Dave with a virtual community run on May 30. The idea is to run a variation on Dave's birthday (which is 2/5). Run .25 miles. Run 2.5 miles. Or run 25 miles. Run what feels right for you. The point is to run and remember. Then share it on social with the hashtag #WeAreDavidClark.More Dave Clark: If Dave's message resonates with you, check out RRP #290, my 2nd podcast with him published almost exactly three years ago. It's a banger.Dave was a sober warrior unlike any other. He wrung every last drop out of life. He was deeply loved and will be terribly missed.Let his story be a beacon. A reminder that when the body, mind and spirit align with faith, human potential is truly boundless.Run free, my friend. “You only have a certain amount of energy. Use it to promote the things you love."Chadd WrightOur 'Best Of' anthology series isn't the only annual tradition here at the RRP. Two years ago we started a new one, kicking off January with hard truths and bankable life advice designed to put that holiday excess in the rear view. Arrest the habits that don't serve you. And calibrate the mind for challenges the new year will undoubtedly bring. In 2018 and 2019 our new year's messenger was a former Navy SEAL turned motivational ultra-athlete they call the hardest man alive -- David Goggins.Continuing on this theme, our first guest for 2020 is also a man who overcame unbelievable obstacles to become a Navy SEAL -- and later an elite ultramarathoner.Meet Chadd Wright.Reared in the mountains of rural northwest Georgia, Chadd grew up obsessed with becoming a SEAL. But when the Navy discovered a rare but asymptomatic cyst on his heart, he was disqualified from entering BUDS. Undaunted, Chadd refused to give up, ultimately tracking down a surgeon willing to perform a procedure deemed too risky by every cardiologist he previously petitioned.Cyst successfully removed, Chadd went on to realize his SEAL dream, serving over the next decade as a Team Leader on multiple deployments to conflict zones across the world. He became a SEAL instructor. A Master Training Specialist. Chadd even served a stint as President Obama’s bodyguard. Along the way, he battled PTSD and traumatic brain injury. He faced his wife’s substance abuse issues. And he found God -- a faith in part born from a paranormal experience he shares in riveting detail today. Now retired from the military, Chadd has found new life as an elite ultramarathoner -- a spiritual quest for self-knowledge and mind-body mastery that has compelled him to tackle some of the world’s most insane endurance slogs like The Revenant -- a 118-mile footrace across south New Zealand with over 52,000 feet of elevation gain that not one person has ever successfully completed. This conversation begins with Chad's unique upbringing. His SEAL dream. And the heart condition that nearly derailed it.We discuss the day-to-day reality of the elite warrior. The supernatural experience and visions that embolden his faith. And the role Christianity plays in his spiritual equation. We talk about the perils of civilian re-entry. The allure of ultrarunning. His training regimen. The mental strategies deployed to venture beyond his limits. And a project he launched with his brother called 3-of-7.Chadd shares his perspective on the importance of breaking down big goals into bite size chunks. Why some people quit their dreams. Why others don’t. And what exactly separates the two. Finally, we talk about why the “stay hard’ mantra isn’t a sustainable life philosophy. The incredible power of spoken word. Disengaging from negativity. And the importance of channeling our limited energy into that which we love.Chadd's mantra is simple:Never give pain a voice. And never, ever die in the chair. As a hardened warrior turned ultra-athlete, Chadd exudes a familiar energy I'd characterize as Goggins-adjacent. But Chadd is anything but a Goggins stand-in. He's warmer. A bit more inviting. Perhaps it's his personable, laconic southern drawl. Or maybe it's his grounded faith in Christ. If Goggins and Josh LaJaunie had a son, his name just might be Chadd Wright. One thing is for certain -- this guy is extremely authentic. Deeply soulful. And wise well beyond his 31 years.Packed with mindset tactics, powerful takeaways and inspiration for miles, Chadd's tale of toil, perseverance and redemption will leave you riveted. Rethinking the ceiling on your own perceived limits. And prepared to tackle any dream you've set for the new year ahead. You can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the conversation streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I fell in love with this man. And this conversation has stayed with me. Josh LaJaunie is faster and leaner than he has ever been in his life - and he’s mentally stronger too. This inspiring man went from being a Louisiana College football player from the deep-south Bayou, tipping the scales at over 400 lbs, to hitting a wall where deep down, Josh was actually dying a slow painful death from overeating, despair, embarrassment, and shame. This kind, warm-hearted family guy’s self-esteem was declining and it started eating away at his overall well-being. So Josh did what few people are able to do in this situation – he pivoted – he put the breaks on his life as he knew it, and he changed his perception about food. By second guessing his cultural norms and redefining what winning meant for himself, for his body and for his life - he healed, inside and outside. He adopted a new normal which included switching to plant-based healthy diet, changing the way he moved his body, and he developed a new mindset. The result - Josh lost 200 plus pounds. He overcame tremendous obstacles to restore and maintain his health. He reinvented himself as athlete, crushing marathons, winning an ultra and even gracing the cover of Runner’s World magazine. Check out his new book Sick to Fit: Three simple techniques that got me from 420 pounds to the cover of Runner’s World, Good Morning America, and the Today Show and learn how to beat those nasty excuses that stand between you and the person you were born to be. And also about nature's dangerous and scary and yucky and itchy and hot and humid and freezing and soaking and uncomfortable aspects - and how we need those experiences in equal measure with the pleasurable ones.

Listen in as Josh and I discuss:  What went through his mind when he stepped on the scale and it said ERROR due to how much he weighed. The difference between his game plan he used to lose his first 100lbs compared to his second 100lbs.  Why he decided to go vegan. What keeps him motivated so that he will never gain his weight back. Howard Jacobson, PhD, is Chief of Behavioral Science (aka Chief Habit Nerd) at WellStart Health. He’s the host of the wildly popular (in his home) Plant Yourself Podcast. Howard is co-author, with Josh LaJaunie, of Sick to Fit, and contributing author to T. Colin Campbell, PhD’s WHOLE: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition, and Garth Davis, MD’s Proteinaholic. His work has also been featured in Fast Company and the Harvard Business Review online. Howard is lead instructor at the WellStart Health Coaching Academy, and co-author of the Coaching for Performance chapter of the American Management Association’s Book of Knowledge. In his free time, Howard runs, practices Russian martial arts, gardens, and plays far-too-competitive Ultimate Frisbee. Howard earned his BA from Princeton University, and his MPH and PhD from Temple University. He lives in Pittsboro, North Carolina with his wife, and sometimes with his adult children. (Fly, kids, fly!) Key Points from the Episode with Howard Jacobson: As Howard went through his career, he had a feeling that making money meant he was selling out, so he does a lot of things for free. His podcast, Plant Yourself, has a huge following, and shares the vegan lifestyle with thousands of listeners. WellStart Health - a digital platform and care team to reverse chronic disease. Can you use behavior change to lead to better health outcomes and get people to put those new habits into their lives in a meaningful and sustainable way. Millions of people have tried and failed to do better, and Howard uses a really brilliant analogy to illustrate why. If a six year old who has never played the piano before sat down to play a complex concerto, they will fail. This isn’t surprising. Yet we are essentially doing that with totally different ways to eat where we go in without clear knowledge, guidance or resources and don’t seem to have the same understanding when we struggle. Instead, we go to a place of frustration and a mentality of, “This will never work for me. It’s too hard.” In Western society, we carry trauma and push ourselves to just move on, which really means the trauma stays within us, stuck there. In other cultures throughout time, there were processes to move through trauma, whether ceremonies, rights of passage or forms of therapy so people could truly move on. We don’t do that, and the trauma continues to cost us as time goes on, and it compounds with each successive trauma. Howard has chosen to face his rather than deny them, and that’s part of the work they do at WellStart. Howard went into a podcast episode he did during a water fast he was on, which lead him down a mental path that came from releasing a lot of inhibitions as he faced lots of feelings. The episode went through a lot of thoughts around his father, and losing his father to cancer when Howard was just 24 years old. He said he was really angry about it, which came from losing his dad to what he saw as a disease of ignorance. He realized this after digging into the research when his father was sick to find a way to save his life. What he learned was that there are many diet-based changes that could have prevented and could help fight the cancer. Lacking that knowledge is the driver of this feeling of the loss being unnecessary and due to ignorance. The knowledge was out there, but it was relegated to a very small academic world rather than the norms of the world at large. While he was angry about the loss of his father, he used the time to reflect on who his father was, what he meant to Howard, and the ways his father would have grown and improved as a person had he had the chance to. We have all lost people too soon. We have all seen towering figures shrivel and die unnecessarily, as Howard put it. And it’s been decades since his father died, so we shouldn’t still be able to say that this is still happening from the same ignorance. He would like to see all doctors trained in lifestyle medicine, which, essentially, none of them are today. And the doctors should be upset about this situation. We need to get this knowledge to a place where it’s accessible to all, not just people in the small group who know today, or to those who live with access to the tools you may need, like a Whole Foods store. He asked really pressing questions around the sustainability of what we are doing in healthcare and agriculture/the environment. Things have to change, but will they change because we change them before it's too late or will it change because it comes crashing down and we have no choice. The latest trend in the NFL isn’t a fancy offense or going for it on fourth down. It’s going vegan! A growing number of the league’s stars — many of them 300 pounds of pure muscle — are turning to a plant-based diet to take their game to the next level. And it’s no surprise given the success they are having. In this episode of The Exam Room, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll travels to Nashville to meet up with plant-based celebrity Chef Charity Morgan. The classically trained vegan chef is now feeding a ton of players in the Tennessee Titans locker room, including her own husband Derrick Morgan. Chef Charity shares how it was actually Derrick who introduced her to a plant-based diet and her secrets to keeping these gridiron giants fed. It’s no small feat given their size! Plus, Chef Charity takes us into the kitchen to whip up a delicious plant-based spinach and artichoke dip that will leave your mouth watering just in time for the Super Bowl. Then, Chuck checks back in with the inspirational Josh LaJaunie whose incredible weight loss journey began after the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010. Their improbable victory took him from 420 pounds to the cover of Runner’s World magazine! Josh is also the author of the book Sick To Fit, which is available for free as a Kindle download. Join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll as he revisits the most inspirational figures of 2018. After being diagnosed with diabetes, former star football player Marc Ramirez refused to accept the same fate that claimed the lives of two family members and crippled the bodies of others. He is proof that genetics are not destiny. Josh LaJaunie was more than 200 pounds overweight and felt trapped inside of a body that seemed destined for an early grave. But he was able to break free of his unhealthy prison and transform himself into an elite runner who now is inspiring thousands to lead healthier lives. The ageless mother-daughter duo of Tracye and Mary McQuirter are turning back the hands of time. Both are turning heads and freely boasting about their age. And you would too if you looked and felt 20 years younger than you actually are! After experiencing extreme pain in her breast, doctors discovered a lump in Lee Crosby’s breast. Barely 30 years old, she was terrified of becoming a statistic. But she beat back that fear and used her experience to create a bright future for herself as a highly sought-after dietician. Evan Bass struggled mightily with his weight. His short stature and large frame made him an easy target for cowardly critics with sharp tongues. He was frequently on the receiving end of cruel comments and cold stares while battling a severe food addiction. But what nobody knew, not even Evan, was that lying dormant inside of him was unparalleled willpower to turn his life around. He’s now a modern-day Rocky with a refuse to lose attitude.  All of them have one thing in common: they adopted to a plant-based diet. “There's no more nutrient dense way to eat than a plant-based diet.”Josh LaJaunieI have never met a more inspirational everyman example of healthy, transformative living than Josh LaJaunie. After 400+ episodes of the podcast, our initial conversation way back in December of 2013 (RRP 63) remains one of my favorite and most popular episodes in the history of the show, followed closely by our second conversation in June 2015 (RRP 152).There's a reason for that.Sure, Josh lost 200+ pounds. He overcame tremendous obstacles to restore and maintain his health. He reinvented himself as athlete, crushing marathons, winning an ultra and even gracing the cover of Runner's World magazine. You might have seen Josh on The Today Show. Perhaps you caught him on Good Morning America. Certainly, Josh's personal triumphs are worthy of celebrating. But I'm emphatic it's his giant heart that captured the the media's eye.100% genuine and utterly authentic, it's Josh's love and devotion to returning the gift in service of his friends, family, community and strangers that sets him apart — and makes me prouder than you can imagine to call him friend.Good things happen to good people who do good for others. For those new to the show, Josh's story — as laid out in his self-described manifesto — begins in marshy southern Louisiana. A self-avowed “swamp dweller” from Bayou Lafourche, he was a big kid surrounded by an even bigger loving family, united by their shared adoration of food. Despite being recruited to play college football, college life left him so disillusioned, he dropped out, returning home aimless and unmoored. He found work in the family construction business, but like so many, started living for the weekend: partying, hunting, fishing, cheering for his beloved New Orleans Saints, and feasting on his favorite local delicacies — po boys, jambalaya & barbecue. Lots of barbecue. It's just what you do down in Bayou Lafourche. It wasn't long before Josh tipped 400+ on the scale. Outwardly he seemed fine with it. But deep down he was dying — his despair, embarrassment and shame escalating in lockstep with his declining self-esteem and overall well being. Then something happened. In 2010, Josh's beloved Saints achieved the impossible, winning the Super Bowl. It seems a small thing. But to Josh it was everything. Forever altering his perception of what is possible, he began to question the limits he imposed upon himself. Empowered, he began to “let go of his normal” and dismiss the embedded “that's just the way it is down here” mentality he was starting to understand often taints the logic of his region.A chain reaction of events ensued that set Josh on a path that literally changed everything. He adopted a 100% plant-based diet. He resumed a long, slow return to fitness. He committed to a top-to-bottom mindset shift. It wasn't overnight, but today he has multiple marathons under his belt. An ultramarathon victory. And a plan to scale the principles that saved his life to save others via his Missing Chins secret Facebook group and newly-hatched WellStart wellness start-up.The best part? It's just the beginning.Picking up where we last left off, this is Josh's story. It's a tale about what can be accomplished when self-ca... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Josh LaJaunie is a man who no longer believes in the word “impossible.” He no longer thinks he can achieve a goal; he knows that he will. It’s a critical distinction that the Louisiana native discovered while doing what he believed to be impossible at the time. Josh achieved a lifelong dream of shedding a massive 400-pound frame and becoming the person he always believed he could be, inside and out. In this conversation with “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll, you’ll hear about Josh’s plant-powered journey in his own words. The inspiration for his first steps stems from the two biggest loves of his life, his wife and the New Orleans Saints. After the latter marched to an improbable Super Bowl victory, he began developing a game plan of his own. It wasn’t long before he stepped out of his front door and went for a run. Shortly thereafter, he ran his first race and hasn’t ever slowed down. To date, he’s run thousands of miles and has is now at the forefront of the plant-based movement among athletes. The comradery shared by Chuck and Josh in this interview is eye opening. Although both have kept the weight off for a number of years, every day is still viewed with a fresh set of eyes. Now, the only thing the self-professed football fanatics enjoy more than Sunday afternoons during the fall is helping others experience that same wholesome vision. Today, I had the opportunity to talk to Josh LaJaunie.  I first heard him on the Rich Roll Podcast about a year ago and was blown away by his story.  I literally had to stop by bike while listening because his story was so overwhelming and his authenticity and passion were contagious.  His story is a powerful one of transformation.  It's about how taking one brush stroke after another can create a beautiful masterpiece.  The Josh LaJaunie you see now is an enthusiastic ultrarunner who has been on the cover of Runner's World, laughed with the hosts on Good Morning America, and how regularly speaks around the country.  He is part of not only the Plant-Based Community, but an even bigger one - how to help people lose weight and create positive change in their lives. Josh wasn't always the man you see today and he'll be the first to tell you that he never imagined his life to take such a fortuitous turn.  He grew up as a self-proclaimed "coon-ass." (more on that later).  Josh grew up in the Bayou close to his family and grandfather (Bam-Bam).  As his weight escalated to 420lbs, Josh tried everything to lose wei   ght but nothing stuck. One day, he and his brother went to the gym and he later decided to run a 10k while being well over 300lbs.  As he got more into running, he found confidence in himself and the courage to commit to change. He started to like the person he saw in the mirror.  He said, "You build trust in yourself, you did what you said you were going to do."   A landslide of events happened that pulled Josh onto his path including the Saints winning the superbowl in 2010 and reading the book "Born to Run." In this show, we talk about the importance of taking action in your life and how taking action creates personal power.  We talk about the relationship we have with food, the importance of family and role models, what self-acceptance actually looks like, how to build self-confidence, and embracing setbacks in life.   Topics Discussed in the Podcast  taking action in life importance of following through and creating personal poewr culture, identity, and the relationship with food importance of family and role models what self acceptance looks like how to build self-confidence importance of community embracing setbacks in life Josh's accomplishments and journey as a runner Links Josh LaJaunie on Instagram Josh's Website Born to Run The Rich Roll Podcast with Josh Episode 1 ; Episode 2 Josh on Good Morning America  Join nearly 1,000 people like you! “Instead of being ashamed of doing what you do or being what you are, I ask two important questions: Why not celebrate it? Why not be proud of the fact that the body you are in can do great things?” Mirna Valerio What is a runner? How do we define an athlete? What does it truly mean to be fit and healthy?Challenging stereotypes, today's guest demands that we broaden our limited definition of these terms. She may not be fast, but she runs. In fact she runs a lot, an impressive slew of ultramarathons to her name. She's also not skinny. In fact, she's big.250 pounds big.But Mirna Valerio is without a doubt a runner. In fact, the force of nature affectionately known as The Mirnavator is one of the most inspirational athletes I have ever met — a true ambassador of sport on a mission to empower women of all shapes and sizes to proudly embrace their bodies, expand their horizons, and own their truth.Carrying herself with grace, an intelligent self-confidence and a smile so gleeful it brightens all in her path, Mirna's appeal has less to do with her ability to run long distances and everything to do with her unapologetic celebration of her personal truth.Mirna's joyful self-acceptance is both real and rare. It's both authentic and bold. It's as infectious as it is inclusive. And it's incredibly empowering to the millions of people who suffer body shame issues silently. When she’s not running, the Brooklyn native (now living in the North Georgia Mountains with her husband and teenage son) is a Spanish teacher, diversity practitioner, cross-country coach, and author of the wildly popular blog Fat Girl Running. She also writes frequently for Women's Running Magazine and recently released a remarkable memoir I thoroughly enjoyed entitled, A Beautiful Work In Progress*.She’s been profiled in the Wall Street Journal and Runner's World and on NBC Nightly News. She’s also an ambassador for a variety of brands like REI, Merrell, Skirt Sports and Swiftwick. Just this week Mirna became one of the faces of JC Penney’s newly launched Here I Am campaign.I first came across Mirna’s story by way of a mini-documentary produced by REI called The Mirnavator that went viral. Hooked, I was determined to share her powerful story with you. Mirna more than delivered.Much like past episodes with Josh LaJaunie, Adam Sud, David Clark and my most recent episode with Charlie Jabaley, this is an incredibly inspiring underdog every person story. But unlike those tales, Mirna's journey is not one marked by dramatic before and after photos. On the contrary, this is a story about body acceptance and body positivity. It's a conversation about self-empowerment and self-acceptance. It’s about tackling stereotypes, overcoming prejudice and the importance of inclusion. And it's an exchange about the need to redefine how we think about and define athleticism, the spirit of sport, and fitness in general. But more than anything, this is a conversation about owning your truth.I adore Mirna and I absolutely love this conversation. I think you will too. Please stick around to the very end for a treat. In addition to her impressive accomplishments, Mirna is also an extremely talented, Julliard-trained opera singer. I was able to convince her to take us out with her angelic, etheral voice. It's insane!Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week's episode is for everyone who feel stuck in life. Maybe you're adrift without hope. Or maybe you're a dreamer who thinks your big goal is utterly impossible. Josh Lajaunie is here to tell you that anything's possible and by changing to a mindset of self love you can get yourself unstuck from any situation. It's a great episode! A few years ago I listened to Josh on the absolutely fantastic Rich Roll Podcast. If you haven't heard Josh's story, buckle up, it's a good one! Living in small town Louisiana, Josh found himself incrementally gaining weight as life went on, eventually rocking the scales at over 400 pounds. He realized that he needed to make a change. Over a few years of being conscious of his diet and nutrition, he eventually settled onto a vegan diet. At the same time he started moving his body "like a human is supposed to" and began challenging himself to long distance running. Flash forward to today and Josh has dropped 200 pounds (....You read that correctly....TWO HUNDRED!) and has transformed into one of the most inspiring plant-based ultra-endurance athletes on the planet. In this episode, Josh shares his life philosophies and chats with me about what he's learned through his journey. I really expect the way he presents himself as a real person accomplishing nothing more than any of us could accomplish with the right kind of mindset and nutrition. He's an awesome dude and I promise that you will find some amazing takeaways from listening to Josh! Huge shout out to Dr. Kasey Johnson from the Unlock Wellness Podcast for connecting me to Josh. Stories of Self-Healing with Nurse Kristin

Born and raised on the bayou in Southern Louisiana, Josh grew up with a lethal relationship to food that caused him to become over 400 pounds.    It was when the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010, that Josh realized the impossible is possible. This forever changed Josh. Something that he believed could never and would never happen, happened.    Soon after this, Josh changed his way of thinking and let go of what he thought was normal. Josh went to college, got an education, started working out, started losing weight, and then started running.   Once Josh started running, he stopped caring so much about the number on the scale and started caring about optimal health and fitness. And it was those things that became his biggest driver.   Josh soon decided to go to the "next level" and decided to really clean up his diet. Josh cut out all meat and dairy and started running marathons and eventually has now worked his way up to running Ultra Marathons.    Josh has completely changed his lifestyle and has been inspiring others along the way. He now speaks on stages about health and fitness and really is a great example of how no matter where you are in life or what you perceive your limitation to be, you can overcome those obstacles and truly create something great.

What’s in our toolbox? What resources do we use to support us in living a plant based lifestyle? This week Claire and Andrew Davies list all the key influencers that first made them try plant-based eating and that now continue to inspire and inform them. Not surprisingly considering their background in healthcare, the ‘Big Four’, Drs T. Colin Campbell (The China Study), Caldwell Esselstyn (Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease), Michael Greger (How Not to Die, nutritionfacts.org) and Dean Ornish (Program For Reversing Heart Disease) focus heavily in this discussion. Another influencer is of course plant based ultra endurance athlete, Rich Roll, who via The Rich Roll Podcast has interviewed several plant-based gurus including Colin Campbell and Michael Greger, in addition to other doctors such as Neal Barnard, Garth Davis, Robynne Chutkan and Robert Ostfeld. The evidence based information they discuss is very helpful in understanding the health benefits of plant-based eating. Rich’s interviews with individuals such as Josh LaJaunie, Fully Raw Kristina and Khalil Rafati provide inspiration and motivation with their personal stories of the power of plants in their own lives. Rich Roll and his wife, Julie Piatt, have also written The Plantpower Way, a cookbook that was a key resource to Claire and Andrew. Other cookbooks they refer to include Vegan Goodness by Jessica Prescott, A Modern Way to Eat by Anna Jones, River Cottage Veg Everyday by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, all the books by Yotam Ottolenghi, Community by Hetty McKinnon, The Wholefood Pantry by Belle Gibson and Sweet Greek by Kathy Tsaples. Watching films and documentaries are a great way to receive a lot of information packaged up in a format that is easy to follow and can be shared together. Claire and Andrew describe how ‘Forks over Knives’ was the main reason they finally committed to stop eating meat and animal products. Other films of influence include What the Health, Cowspiracy, The Connection, Supersize Me and That Sugar Film. Connection with others on the same journey in community groups as well as attending retreats and immersions such as those conducted by Rich Roll and Julie Piatt can be incredibly helpful in moving forward and making a bigger commitment to eating more plants. Attending events such as the recent What the Health screenings, that are still happening around Australia, are a great way to boost motivation levels and meet others who are seeking a ‘new normal’.

He is an inspiration after truly mending his own path. Weighing over 400 Lbs, Josh started his journey because he wanted to lose some weight, but more importantly, to shake things up a little by providing some change in his life as a way of coping with a stressful period. However, the path he started down turned into so much more. Now Josh is a ultramarathoner (an ultramarathon is any race longer then a marathon length) with many races in the rear view mirror. In September 2016 he finished third in the Wildcat 100-miler in Florida and he was recently featured on the cover of Runner's World magazine, after winning their 2016 cover model search. “If you want extreme results, you need to do extreme things.”Andrew “Spud Fit” TaylorOne of the great privileges of hosting this podcast is the occasional opportunity it presents to shift focus from conversations with globally prominent thought leaders to shine a bright spotlight on the struggles and triumphs of the everyman.Folks living average, relatable lives. Anonymous individuals dealing with issues all too many of us confront and combat — obesity, depression, disease, addiction and/or a sense of general dissatisfaction with their current life status. Authentic souls who reach the limit of their pain threshold and cross that tipping point to finally proclaim, enough is enough. On a personal note, nothing gives me more satisfaction than celebrating those who courageously challenge their life paradigm, step outside the cozy comfort zone, and attempt the extraordinary — all in the interest of gaining control of their well being and seizing the reigns of their life path.Folks like Josh LaJaunie, who lost over 200 pounds to conquer ultramarathons and even grace the cover of this month's Runners World magazine. Or Brett & David Wilcox – the father-son duo who ran across the USA to raise GMO awareness. Luke Tyburski fits the bill — a guy who overcame depression to conquer The Ultimate Triathlon. And I'd add Adam Sud to that list — a young guy who kicked adderal, reversed his diabetes and found a life.Sharing these experiences is what makes this podcast different from the others — meaningful and special in a very unique way.So if you enjoy the uplifting everyman story, then you are in for a treat today.About a year ago, Andrew Taylor stepped onto the scale — 334 pounds. The Aussie didn't like what he saw. He didn't like how he felt. Clinically depressed, medicated and hopelessly addicted to unhealthy foods, his elevator was going down — fast.Fed up and sick & tired of being sick & tired, he drew a line in the sand and decided to step over it.It was time to finally wake up and seize the reigns of his physical, mental and emotional health and well being. To once and for all reclaim the life he felt quickly slipping away.Blessed with self-awareness, he saw his path to freedom would lay not in balance but rather in what most would consider drastic and extreme measures.Andrew decided that he would eat nothing but potatoes for an entire year.Nothing. But. Potatoes. For an entire year.On January 2, 2016, all 334 depressed pounds of Andrew popped open his phone, clicked record, and announced his quest on YouTube — to a subscriber base of exactly zero. The single video soon morphed into a daily vlog, a raw, personal and authentic look into the highs, lows, how to's and whatnots of a potato-fueled journey Andrew dubbed Spud Fit.He presumed nobody would care. This was for him. Surprisingly, the world took notice. It wasn't long before the global media picked up Andrew's personal interest story and before he could even blink, his wild adventure was foisted into the white hot spotlight.Over the last year, Andrew has been profiled in countless publications — eve... Today’s guest is Mr. Josh LaJaunie. In his own words, Josh is a “plant-eating, miles-logging, WHODAT from the Bayou with an appetite for life!” Yes, he ran a TON of miles and has an incredible story to tell, but this conversation really had me thinking a lot about hunting. Josh doesn’t hunt anymore, but it is part of who is he and it will always be tied to great memories. As someone who now doesn’t eat meat of any kind, he is thinking outside the box about how he can communicate to his Bayou brothers and sisters that eating meat is not something that he feels is healthy for them. His ideas on how to engage in that conversation and his thoughts on hunting as it is looked at from the outside world are fascinating, so I welcome you to open your mind and really hear what he has to say. In addition to that, we talked about family and the impact that this plant-based journey had on his family’s dinner table and get togethers. He is a great guy who is full of life and I am excited for you to get to hear from him.

While you're at it, support the show, grab a book with Audible, or start shopping at Thrive Market.   Recently the BBC televised the autopsy of an obese woman called Obesity - The Post Mortem. Hope became aware of the obesity autopsy after reading an article claiming it to be fat shaming. Of course we had to take an opportunity to locate and view the autopsy to see how the show presented the data and how the issue of obesity was addressed. We were pleased to see that rather than shaming the person they provided evidence regarding excessive weight gain and internal organs. It was appalling to see how her weight affected nearly all of her organs including her liver and lungs. Dr. Howard Jacobson, who we've had on the show before, and Josh LaJaunie, formerly obese man turned ultra marathon runner, were gracious enough to chat with us about the obesity autopsy. They also discussed taking the steps and overcoming obstacles to get over our own physical hold ups and start hitting the pavement again. It's inspired Hope and I both to jump back on the wagon and we know it will push you to review your physical state and make a change today. Josh LaJaunie is, by his own admission, a simple Bayou coonass who discovered plants and running, and transformed his life. His backstory is well documented in a couple of Rich Roll Podcasts, which you should drop everything and listen to if you don't know Josh yet (links below). Josh can do that kind of reductionist rebuttal as well as I can, but he prefers to stay out of the weeks and just talk in terms of common sense. So when Joe Rogan tweeted about a report that the sugar industry had influenced scientific studies on the dangers of saturated fat by proclaiming "China Study RIP," Josh jumped in. Joe argued: "There are certainly benefits to eating lots of plants. The question is are there also benefits to eating animals." Here's how Josh responded: @joerogan @Drgarthdavis absolutely. It's called avoiding starvation. In excess of that, it's ignoring nature's brilliant protocol. — Josh LaJaunie (@joshlajaunie) September 14, 2016 I wanted to talk with Josh about this concept: that simply by looking at nature with curiosity and humility, we can intuit how we should eat and move and live for optimal health and happiness. So that's the conversation on this episode. A caution: Josh employs "salty" language, so keep the earbuds on if you're listening in the presence of the innocent :) [powerpress] We covered: reductionist science: enjoying the music rather than analyzing every note appreciating the brilliant self-sustainable protocol of nature "human animals are the only ones that f--- it up" modern human culture is a "popcorn fart in the wind" the "quantity problem" of animal food consumption extrapolating the pointy stone at the end of a spear to CAFOs and heated box blinds with porn and beer hunting and fishing in the woods - a drive to understand one's relationship to the environment and its resources our reliable calories and nutrients: tubers and leafy greens how to get off track within the plant-based paradigm (nut butters, breads, pastas) on not judging hunters running and human survival overfeeding a deer on dead birds and much more...

Drew traveled the world as a professional athlete coming from Canada, through the US, and overseas into Australia and Germany following his dreams and passion for baseball. He quickly became the ‘go to’ guy regarding fitness and nutrition as he continually experimented on his own body to find out what foods would help him recover quicker or build muscle more efficiently, how to exercise in order to help him jump higher, run faster and help him stand out on the field. He soon found out stress played a vital role in what he was putting both in and on his body, and that by reducing stress through a plant based diet and avoiding toxins both on and off the field, he could improve as an athlete and stand out from the competition. We talk about how food and environment causes stress in our bodies and how we need to slow down and take a holistic approach to detoxing rather than following a fad. Josh LaJaunie weighed over 400 pounds (180kgs) in 2012 and decided it was time to make a change. Josh has just recently completed his first 100km running event and has his sites set on a 100mile race in the next 12 months. He is an absolutely remarkable and inspiring guy who is looking to help others find their true purpose in life and move towards a healthier, more compassionate life free from meat and dairy products. “Fixing the way I thought about myself and what is possible changed my life—more than plants, more than running, more than any of these things—it’s what went on inside my mind.”Josh LaJaunieJosh LaJaunie is perhaps the most inspirational everyman example of healthy, transformative living I have ever met. After 151 episodes of the podcast, our first initial conversation back in December of 2013 (RRP 63) is to this day one of the most popular, most downloaded episodes in the history of the show. If you missed it, please make a point of listening to this amazing exchange here. That conversation transpired on Skype. We had never actually met. Now we have. At Healthfest in Marshall, TX a few months back I had the opportunity to spend an entire weekend with Josh. It was a memorable experience that left me more impressed than ever with this fine young man. Not just because he has overcome tremendous obstacles to restore and maintain his health. Not just because he continues to impressively evolve as an athlete and runner. But because of the exemplary human being he has become. A big spirit who continues to grow. A giant heart and shining example of service — constantly educating and inspiring his loved ones and community at large. The story — as laid out in his self-penned manifesto “Free Josh LaJaunie”– goes like this:In November of 2013, this guy I had never heard of called Josh LaJaunie tweeted me his before and after pictures. The change was so astonishing, my first thought was, can this be real? The 400+ pound guy on the left bore almost no resemblance to the guy on the right, a super fit, handsome young man running with a big smile on his face.Chris Farley had morphed into Bradley Cooper. But how?On a lark, I invited him on the podcast. I had no idea his story — more importantly his ability to own and tell his story — would be so extraordinary. The experience left me and everyone who tuned in indelibly changed. Ever since, I have felt inexplicably bonded to a guy I never actually met.In short, Josh accomplished what some would deem impossible, dropping over 200 pounds and a life-long addiction to unhealthy foods & lifestyle habits to discover a passion for running. A journey that led him to completing multiple marathons and more recently his first ultramarathon. He didn't just lose weight. And he didn't just keep the weight off. He became an athlete.A real athlete. Most impressive is how he faced, battled and overcame astounding, impossibly entrenched cultural obstacles to change everything about how he lives his life. A gift he now freely and quite joyously shares, permanently transforming the lives of everyone who crosses his path.Born & bred in southern Louisiana, Josh is a 100% genuine, authentic, self-avowed “swamp dweller” from Bayou Lafourche. A big kid with an even bigger heart surrounded by a loving nuclear and extended family united by their shared adoration of food. Josh was a standout high school football player, recruited to play college ball. But disillusioned by college life in Arkansas, he dropped out of school, only to return home, aimless and unmoored. People ask me all the time, “Who inspires you, Rich?”For the most part, the people that inspire me are people you've never heard of. Everyman guys like Josh LaJaunie who toil tirelessly yet essentially anonymously to actualize profound personal change. The single dad working two jobs that still finds a way to lose 50 pounds, get off his statin medication and run his first 10K. Or the soldier stationed in the Middle East doing his best to eat plant-based despite confronting tremendous daily obstacles. Then there are guys like Charlie. The story of Charlie Engle first found it's way into my consciousness back around 2006 or 2007. I still vividly recall hearing Charlie relate the facts of his experience in a radio interview he did with a host I cannot recall. What I do recall is just how moved I was by his journey. A story that didn't just click with me, but one I related to with every fiber of who I am.Addict. Alcoholic. Sober. Ultrarunner. Father. Felon. Inspiration.Charlie is a man of very high highs and very low lows. A man with addiction and athletic stories of Gilgamesh proportions that make Finding Ultra sound like pre-school recess. An alcoholic crack addict essentially living out of his car, it took gunshots in his Toyota 4-Runner and the birth of his son in 1992 to finally get sober. Ultrarunning became the focus of his affections, an affair that took him to stunning heights and accolades, the nadir being an unprecedented 111-day run across the Sahara Desert with compadres Ray Zahab and Kevin Lin — a feat chronicled in the Matt Damon narrated documentary entitled Running the Sahara.Life was pretty good. Certainly not entirely balanced, but hey, nobody's perfect. He had done some amazing things. Maybe he had a shot at some modicum of happiness after all. Then came quite possibly the most improbable, unpredictable challenge he could ever imagine facing. A saga with all the trappings of a bad B-movie. An obsessed local IRS agent illogically hell-bent on justice. Wire taps. Garbage probes. And the requisite wily female dispatched to enchant and entrap. A saga culminating in a federal conviction for mortgage fraud for misstating income on so-called “liar loan” documents (something hundreds of thousands of people did), Charlie heads to Beckley Federal Prison in West Virginia. A poster child for everything awry with the mortgage backed security crisis and fallout of recent years, Charlie serves 16 months. How do you survive something like that? And yet Charlie comes out the other side not just intact, but quite possibly more whole than when he entered. A man changed by the experience, but maybe more attuned to what really matters. And a man running better than ever. Just one year after his release, Charlie returned to the Badwater 135 to clock a 5th place finish and break the master's world record by over 3 hours. Next up? Aside from getting married this weekend, Charlie will attempt to run across the United States faster than any human being ever has previously. A feat he calls Run 2 Boston, Charlie and wheelchair athlete extraordinaire André Kajlic will line up at the LA Marathon on March 9, complete the 26.2 miles and then just keep going. And going. Until they reach Boston, where they will run that marathon. All in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the victim's of last year... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Bear in mind, I get many such images sent to me. I absolutely love this stuff – It's why I do what I do. But something about this post was different. And yet when I looked closely, I could indeed determine that it was in fact the same person. I was stunned.Chris Farley had morphed into Bradley Cooper. But how?I had to find out. I reached out to him, and we exchanged a few e-mails. Then he sent me a document, with a title that says it all.“FREE JOSH LAJAUNIE”A manifesto on life transformation, it's the detailed personal account of how Josh accomplished what some would deem impossible, dropping over 200 pounds and a life-long addiction to unhealthy foods & lifestyle habits to discover a passion for running. A journey that led him to completing a half-marathon and preparing for his first marathon. He didn't just lose weight — he became an athlete. But what truly struck me wasn't just the weight loss or his discovered passion for running. It was the story of how he faced, battled and overcame astounding, impossibly entrenched cultural obstacles to change everything about how he lives his life. A gift he now freely shares, transforming the lives not just of his family members, but his beloved community at large. At that moment, I knew I needed to share his story with you.Born & bred in southern Louisiana, Josh is a 100% genuine, authentic, self-avowed “swamp dweller” from Bayou Lafourche. Someone who shirks at the label “cajun” as too highfalutin, and “proud to sound like a coonass”. A big kid surrounded by a loving nuclear and extended family united by their shared love of food — a regional imperative — Josh was a standout high school football player, recruited to play college ball. He found work in the family construction business, but lived for the weekend – time spent hunting, fishing, cheering for his beloved New Orleans Saints, feasting on his favorite local delicacies — po boys, jambalaya & barbeque. And partying. Lots of partying. It's just what you do down in Bayou Lafourche. The weight escalated. As did the despair. His embarrassment and shame escalating in equal measure to his declining self-esteem. Not to mention an almost certain future of diabetes and heart disease. Then something happened. In 2010, Josh's beloved Saints achieved the impossible, winning the Super Bowl. It seems a small thing. But to Josh it was everything. Forever altering his perception of what is possible, he began to question the limits he imposed upon himself. Empowered, he began to “let go of his normal” and dismiss the embedded “that's just the way it is down here” mentality he was starting to understand often taints ...
