The Golden Gate Quartet is an African-American vocal group, that was founded in 1934 by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. Willie Johnson, William Langford, Henry Owens, and Orlandus Wilson started singing gospel and folks songs in churches and then at radio stations. In 1937 the foursome signed their first recording contract. They performed at Carnegie Hall, and nite clubs in New York City causing their popularity to grow. In 1940 they had a nationally syndicated radio show. In 1941, the Golden Gate Quartet became the first black musical group to sing at Constitution Hall, and performed several times at the White House. The Quartet was inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. You're going to here 5 episodes from their national radio show which aired in 1940 and 1941. More info at http://krobcollection.com
Song: God Told NicodemusSong by: The Golden Gate QuartetPodcast vocals (intro): Gail NoblesHi! I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to The Gospel Greats. Today's topic: The Golden Gate Quartet. The Golden Gate Quartet (a.k.a. The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is a vocal gospel group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active. The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the group's website, the original members were Willie Johnson (baritone 1980), William Langford (tenor; d. 1970), Henry Owens (second tenor 1970) and Orlandus Wilson (bass; 1917–1998); other sources state that Langford and Wilson replaced earlier members Robert "Peg" Ford and A.C. "Eddie" Griffin in 1935.From 1935, the group sang in churches and on local radio, gaining a regular spot on radio station WIS in Columbia, South Carolina in 1936.[ They began as a traditional jubilee quartet, combining the clever arrangements associated with barbershop quartets with rhythms borrowed from the blues and jazz like scat singing. They developed a broad repertoire of styles – from Owens' mournful, understated approach in songs such as "Anyhow" or "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name", to the group's highly syncopated arrangements in "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego". Like The Mills Brothers in popular music, they would often include vocal special effects in their songs, imitating train sounds in songs such as "Golden Gate Gospel Train". Langford often sang lead, using his ability to range from baritone to falsetto, while Johnson narrated. Wilson's bass served as the anchor for the group and Owens harmonized with Langford and Johnson. In 1940 the group signed a new contract with Columbia Record's Okeh label and shortened their name to Golden Gate Quartet. The quartet lost their pre-eminent position in gospel music after the war, when they faced competition from the newer hard gospel quartets. The Golden Gates revived their career in 1955, however, when they toured Europe for the first time where they became widely popular. The group made their first tour of Africa in 1962, and during the early 1960s gradually expanded their accompanying band to Incorporate guitar, piano, bass, and drums. The Golden Gates sang a lot of songs. One of the songs that I like to hear the group sing is God Told Nicodemus.
David Ortiz is a Hall of Famer!! We talk to totally the real Big Papi about his induction, and then reflect on some of our favorite memories of him! Then we also rant more about the lockout, and find ourselves going down a rabbit hole when we try to find out where Henry Owens is. Let's go American Defenders of New Hampshire! Great episode, can't miss it!
On 23 March 1921 the IRA in Co Roscommon ambushed a convoy of British military and members of the RIC as they travelled from Strokestown towards Longford. The ambush took place in a rural area called Scramogue. This is the story of that engagement along with detailed background of events in the county leading up to the ambush and its aftermath. The story is recounted here by Roscommon historian Henry Owens.
Chris and Ian return to talk about the glacial pace of the offseason. Henry Owens has left the system. JD Martinez still hasn’t signed with the Sox. And while the big headlines tarry, the club has signed some minor league free agents, including Ivan De Jesus Jr. who returns to the club for his third stint. The guys go over non-roster invitations, touching on Chad De La Guerra’s rise from 17th round pick to big league camp. They break down the club’s AAA rule 5 pickups. Finally, they cover both Baseball America’s and Baseball Prospectus’ rankings of the Red Sox system. Listen in! It's now August, and we've got our second straight new top prospect! Why did Rafael Devers leapfrog Yoan Moncada to take the top spot? Episode 82 – I
Many outlets have noted the abundance of prospects on the Pawtucket Red Sox roster this season. So what about it then? We're past the midway point of June, and after getting plenty of looks at what the Triple-A club has to offer, Chris, Matt, and Ian talked about who's up and who's down for the PawSox, including Travis Shaw, Garin Cecchini, Jackie Bradley, Brian Johnson, Henry Owens, Pat Light, Dayan Diaz, Jonathan Aro, and more. At the other end of the ladder, the Lowell Spinners started their season on Friday, and the GCL Sox will start on Monday. What did the guys think of the season-opening Lowell roster, and what that probably means down at the complex? Listen and find out. And as always, we answered your listener emails, which led to a discussion regarding the development of Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts.
Following the big debut of Eduardo Rodriguez and the Boston rotation's continued struggles, it's sure looking like it's time for the Red Sox to start leaning on that stacked Triple-A rotation we heard about in the preseason. But what can we expect from Rodriguez, Brian Johnson, and Henry Owens, both now and in the future? Chris, Matt, and Ian talked about that, as well as when it's time to promote a player in the minors - spurred by 18-year-old Rafael Devers's hot month of May in Greenville - as well as the latest update to the site rankings!
With Chris returning from the other side of the world, he got Ian and Matt on the horn to look back at the season's first month. The guys talked about the new rankings' movers and shakers, as well as some recent MLB call-ups and the outlook for players like Blake Swihart, Jackie Bradley, and Matt Barnes. The guys also had plenty to report from the field(s), having seen Pawtucket, Portland, and Greenville already in this young season. Listen for reports on Henry Owens, Rafael Devers, and more! Finally, in response to reader questions, the guys quickly discussed the Red Sox' potential plans for the number 7 pick in next month's draft.
In this episode, I’m talking with a good investor buddy of mine, Henry Owens. Henry is succeeding as an investor because he sees that every day is an opportunity for a learning experience. He knows that REI is always changing so he knows he has to keep learning and readjusting his business and approach. Sounds like a smart guy, huh? Well, he is, and he’s got loads of good advice for us. Henry explains why he chose to begin his REI career in wholesaling – after a few false starts that is. Now, he’s killin’ it. He tells us how he’s making deals, why he’s a direct mail fan and the postcards he uses. He also lets us in on how he used tax delinquent lists for leads and why he targets the props that owe the most taxes. And if you’re new to investing or thinking about jumping in the game, Henry offers up some really great words of encouragement about not overcomplicating things and sticking with the basics. Let’s get to it…

After a bit of a break, Chris, Matt, and Ian had some things to discuss. Ian and Chris have seen Portland recently, and they had plenty to dish after seeing one of the most prospect-laden teams in the country, on players like Mookie Betts, Blake Swihart, Henry Owens, Brian Johnson, Sean Coyle, and the very recently promoted Travis Shaw (so recent that he was still in Portland when we recorded). We also answered your emails and talked about which prospects in the system are due for a promotion. You know Sergio? Join us!
WEEI.com's Rob Bradford and Alex Speier explore the avenues the Red Sox may be forced to take if they do not re-sign Jon Lester. Speier offers updates regarding some of the Red Sox' top pitching prospects, such as Henry Owens, Allen Webster, Anthony Ranaudo, Rubby De La Rosa, Brandon Workman and Matt Barnes, while also engaging the conversation regarding what each pitcher's upside might be. The two also talk Lester, and the path he took to become the pitcher we now see. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information. Learn more about your ad choices. Chris, Matt, Jon, and Ian got together for a super-size episode, leading off with their reaction to the call-up and usage of Xander Bogaerts in Boston. They also discussed some of the system's hottest players in Mookie Betts, Henry Owens, and Manuel Margot; the announcement of the Arizonal Fall League rosters; the past month's promotions; and who might get the call to Boston in September. Plus Jon tells a visitor that he's on a conference call. Yeah, things kind of fell apart at the end.
The podcast returns, as Chris chats with Matt and Ian about the three-team trade that brought Jake Peavy and Brayan Villarreal in exchange for Jose Iglesias, Frank Montas, Cleuluis Rondon, and JB Wendelken, including the players involved and repercussions going forward for the Red Sox. Plus, the guys gabbed a bit about the promotions of Anthony Ranaudo and Henry Owens.
Alex Speier of WEEI.com joins Rob Bradford for another edition of The Bradford Files, this time discussing whether or not the Red Sox should include top prospects Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Matt Barnes, Henry Owens or even Will Middlebrooks in a blockbuster trade deadline deal for either Matt Garza or Josh Johnson.
