The Underground Lounge starts of Season 3 by welcoming NBA champion, entrepreneur, and media trailblazer Matt Barnes for a conversation that's equal parts raw, insightful, and hilarious. Matt chops it up with the crew about life after basketball and how he and Stephen Jackson broke barriers by launching All the Smoke, turning it into a full production company that continues to change the way athletes control their own narratives. He reflects on the struggles of navigating traditional media, what inspired him to jump into podcasting, and why authenticity has been the key to connecting with fans. From there, it's story time with Barnes and Lou reliving their playing days together, including locker room chaos, wild rookie lessons, and behind-the-scenes moments with coaches like Mo Cheeks and Doc Rivers. They break down what really went wrong with the Clippers, how toxic locker rooms can derail success, and the impact of leaders who know how to build confidence in their players. Matt also opens up about the rise of Steph Curry, the evolution of the modern game, and the debate of today's Warriors versus the '90s Bulls.Of course, no Underground Lounge episode is complete without laughs and unfiltered honesty. From drinking bets on team buses to the “Fuck You Camera” sendoff, Matt proves why he's always been unapologetically himself, on and off the court. This one is a deep dive into the mind of a competitor turned culture shaper, and a reminder that the stories behind the game are just as powerful as the ones on the court.
Apart from Me, You Can Do Nothing
SUMMARY What do we do when God asks us to make business risks for His kingdom? This episode dives into the world of entrepreneurship through acquisition (ETA) with two incredible stories of how God leads ordinary people into extraordinary ventures. In the first half, we sit down with Matt Barnes, an ETA who acquired a laundry service, as he shares his story of how the Lord guided him into and through this journey of business ownership. In the second half, you'll hear a live recording from our annual Business for the Common Good event, where Denver Institute founder Jeff Haanen interviews another ETA, Bob Larkin. Each entrepreneur brings a unique perspective on integrating faith into business, creating caring work environments, and the risks and rewards of following God's call in the marketplace. Together, their stories highlight the importance of community, wisdom, and a vision for businesses that prioritize both employee well-being and spiritual growth. HIGHLIGHTS On Ownership as Shepherding "We bought a small business and we're functionally the shepherds or pastors of this group of people, most of which don't find themselves in church. And we think that that's an incredible opportunity to glorify the Lord in excellence in what we do, provide a service to the front range, and then care for our employees and their families while we do it." - Matt Barnes On Risk "....First and foremost is surrendering to the Lord's will. Treatment tech belongs to the Lord. It's very obvious to me in how he brought the business to the table, right? That's a huge blessing to look at one business and that be the business that you acquire and allow it to grow. And so every day I can look at Treatment Tech and say, this is yours, Lord. When things are going well, you're blessing us. When things are challenging, you're teaching us. And In both circumstances, you're drawing us closer to you, and I'm open to both of those." - Bob Larkin RESOURCES Download the episode transcript here Learn more about Matt Barnes redemptive business story here from Christ At Work or this video by Aquiring Minds Nominate a Founder or Mentor for our upcoming Denver Redemptive Lab this Fall November 12 to 14, 2025. The Stephen A. Smith and LeBron altercation that took place at the Knicks-Lakers game is starting to get out of hand. LeBron allegedly reprimanded Stephen A., telling him to stop “f**k**g” with his son on national television. Stephen A., however, went on "Gil's Arena," the podcast of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, and completely blasted LeBron for approaching him the way he did. Despite dubbing himself the "straight shooter," Stephen A., who also is the face of ESPN , is cussing up a storm when ranting about what went down between the “King” and himself. Jason questions why many Democrats are presenting themselves with this ghetto persona using profanity-laced language. Not just Stephen A., but James Carville and Jasmine Crockett are also following suit. It's no surprise that Matt Barnes' contribution to this dilemma was to take to his podcast, “All the Smoke,” and talk about how for him "it's' always on site." This ghetto mentality is sweeping the nation and converting masculinity into femininity. Men are supposed to have emotional control, yet more and more people fall victim to this pandemic. Delano Squires joins the conversation to weigh in on the lack of emotional control from the Left. There has been a moral decay of culture for the last five decades, in the way we dress, act, and present ourselves. These are all symptoms of a much bigger problem. Matt Barnes is a former NBA player, entrepreneur, and media personality whose journey from a turbulent childhood to professional basketball stardom is a story of resilience, grit, and determination. Growing up in a racially diverse yet challenging environment, Matt faced adversity both on and off the court, fueling his drive to succeed. After being overlooked in high school and college, his relentless work ethic led him to a 14-year NBA career, where he played for teams like the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers, ultimately winning an NBA Championship with the Warriors in 2017. Beyond basketball, Matt has become a prominent voice in sports media, co-hosting the popular podcast All the Smoke and advocating for social issues, fatherhood, and personal growth. His journey from underdog to champion offers powerful lessons in perseverance, self-belief, and the importance of staying true to oneself.Timestamps0:00:00 - Introduction and Family Life0:05:38 - Racism in School and Childhood Challenges0:26:00 - Playing with and Learning from Kobe0:33:58 - Matt's NBA Career1:13:54 - Importance of Being a Team Player1:32:27 - Matt's Thoughts on Caitlin Clark1:46:08 - Drugs in the NBA1:55:55 - The Truth about the Derek Fisher Fight2:02:47 - Tupac and Fill in the Blank to ExcellenceResourcesAll the Smoke PodcastMatt's InstagramWant to Connect?
