I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 6th of December, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Book of Daniel 2:19:”Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. So Daniel blessed the God of heaven.” Then we go straight to the Gospel of Mark 4:41:”And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” - Jesus, speaking to the weather and calming the storm, a physical impossibility. Here at Shalom, we've got a favourite saying, and it goes like this: ”One genuine miracle equals a thousand sermons.” If you imagine Nebuchadnezzar telling his wise men, ”I want you to interpret a dream I had last night because I cannot sleep and I'm very anxious and fearful.” And they said to him, ”Well King, tell us what you dreamt and we'll interpret it.” “No, no, no, no. You must tell me what I dreamt and then interpret it.” They said, ”There's nobody on earth that can do that.” And the king started to kill the wise men, the sorcerers and the magicians, until the soldiers came to Daniel, Meshack, Shadrack and Abednigo. Daniel said, ”Give us time and we will interpret it.” Folks, you see, that's a genuine miracle, and of course, we know that when Daniel interpreted the dream, everything changed.I want to tell you a little story, a few years ago, I'm sure many of you in South Africa remember it, we had a prayer meeting in Bloemfontein, in the middle of our country. Our country was in dire straits. Over one million people arrived at that meeting, an open-air meeting. It was an incredible occasion. One of my sons brought his friend, a professional rugby player, an unbeliever, to the meeting and he told me afterwards that the young man was very impressed by the beautiful music. He was impressed by the massive crowd and he was interested in the message that I brought, but that didn't change anything. Then out of the blue, a whirlwind started at the back of the crowd and it came right forward taking up into the air, blankets, deckchairs, cooler boxes, never to be seen again, and hovered over the stage for a while, in a perfectly calm day with not a breath of wind. This young man was so amazed by this event that he gave his life to Christ.Today, let us not underestimate the miracle-working power of our God.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Today's episode is a change up from typical ultra conversations but an important one nonetheless. Whether you are training for the Olympics or your own big goals, having coaches and people in your corner that want the best for you on the field or trail is important. One of Scott's former athletes shares her journey with the author of All In Stride to hopefully help other athletes navigate training, disordered eating, and more. Hope you enjoy! In All in Stride, Johanna Garton tells the gripping and inspiring stories of Elvin and Shadrack. Beginning with their upbringing in Kenya, Garton follows the runners through their journeys to the United States, running for Division One universities, their blossoming romance as college students, and ultimately their service as U.S. soldiers and professional runners. Woven through the narrative is the story of Samantha Schultz, who also competed for the U.S. Army. Like Elvin and Shadrack, she struggled with several obstacles throughout her journey, including poor coaching, over training, the intense pressure to make the Olympic team, and disordered eating, a condition that plagues so many young female athletes.
We loved speaking with author and sportswriter, Johanna Garton, whose most recent book, All in Stride: A Journey in Running, Courage and the Search for the American Dream,” was published on Tuesday, April 2. We met Johanna at the Boston Marathon and were thrilled to invite her to talk about her new book on our show. The book is about professional runner, Elvin Kibet, and her husband, Shadrack Kipchirchir and their journeys from a village in Kenya to collegiate athletes to world class American athletes, their love story, and their experiences as distance runners for the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) for the U.S. Army. Fun fact—Shadrack paced Kipchoge to his sub 2 marathon in 2019. Through a series of interviews with Kibet, Kipchirchir, and their coaches, Garton weaves the story of the many obstacles, including racism, sexism, and disordered eating, that both athletes overcame to reach success their running careers, their challenging but happy childhoods in Kenya. Both decided, in spite of their challenges, that they wanted to serve in the U.S. Army because they were so grateful for the opportunities they were able to seize in the U.S. through running and wanted to serve their country. In her book, Garton also shares the story of WCAP athlete and 2020 U.S. Olympian Samantha Schultz. Schultz struggled with eating disorder recovery, which ultimately led to her retirement from competing in modern pentathlon. . Witnessing Schultz's eating disorder struggles was a culture shock for Kibet, having never seen or heard of anyone experiencing this growing up in Kenya, and it influenced her decision to study public health and research how to better address such issues. Kibet and Kipchirchir are now parents to two-year old Mylo and recently competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/runfartherandfaster/message
Buy All in Stride Here! We are speaking about the new book All In Stride by author Johanna Garton featuring the intertwining running journeys of Shadrack Kipchirchir and his wife Elvin Kibet as they go from young kids in Kenya to sports careers in the US NCAA system and US Army. Elvin has joined us as well and we will link back to her pre Olympic trials interview with us in February if you missed it. Elvin was a 6 time all American while at university of Arizona and qualified for the USA Olympic Trials Marathon 18 months post partum after having her first baby, her son Mylo in 2022. Her husband Shadrack had made multiple US World Championship teams and the 2016 US Olympic Team in the 10,000m. Johanna is an author who in addition to writing All In Stride a has written such books as Edge Of The Map which is based on the lives of trailblazing mountaineer Christine Boskoff and her partner Charlie Fowler and Awakening East about moving her adopted children back to China for a year- her website is http://JohannaGarton.com .
One of the most irresistible songs in all of gospel music is the Golden Gate Quartet's a cappella rendition of the story of Daniel in the lion's den – “Shadrack.”
Johanna Garton is a three-time author with her most recent book; All in Stride, released this month. Her book details the gripping and inspiring stories of elite runners Elvin and Shadrack. Beginning with their upbringing in Kenya, Garton follows the runners through their journeys to the United States, competing for Division One universities, their romance during college, and ultimately their service as U.S. soldiers and professional runners. More than just a running story, All in Stride takes readers behind the scenes to explore the difficulties Elvin and Shadrack faced, including adjusting to an entirely new culture in the U.S., bigotry and intolerance, the stresses and joys of global competitions like the Olympics, joining the U.S. Army's World Class Athlete Program, and discovering the ever-changing landscape of what it means to be an American. Woven through the narrative is the story of Samantha Schultz, who competed in the sport of modern pentathlon for the U.S. Army. Sammy's journey involved several obstacles including poor coaching, overtraining, the intense pressure to make the Olympic team and a dive into disordered eating, a condition that plagues so many young female athletes. In this conversation we discuss: - Johanna's background and early introduction to running - The stories of Shadrack & Elvin - The story-writing process - The challenges of "making it" as a professional runner And so much more. The American dream and the Olympic dream collide in Johanna Garton's new book, "All in Stride." All in Stride: A Journey in Running, Courage and the Search for the American Dream is about Olympian Shadrack Kipchirchir and his wife, Sgt. Elvin Kibet, two American professional runners. Both competed in February's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Shadrack competed for Team USA in the 10,000m at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. Johanna Garton is a longtime Colorado-based endurance sports writer who met the married couple in Denver. All in Stride tells the story of how the runners independently made their way from Kenyan villages to American colleges, the military and professional running. Their American dream turns into an Olympic dream as each pushes to represent their new country. Their adjustment to American culture isn't easy and includes brushes with bigotry and intolerance. "I heard about this program that was part of the U.S. Army based in Colorado Springs. It was soldiers in the U.S. Army who also were training to become world class athletes. I went down and spent time at one of their workouts, and I happened to meet Shadrack, who's kind of the main character in this book," says Johanna. Johanna Garton started her career as an immigration lawyer. But her love of distance running won out career-wise. She transitioned to sports writing and writes mainly about endurance sports. Johanna ran for Syracuse University as a walk-on. She's run more than 20 marathons including five Boston Marathons . And, she even made it to Everest Base Camp in 2022. On this Dying to Ask: What it's like when the American dream and the Olympic dream collide The role the US Army plays in helping athletes get to the Olympics The special role Team USA's immigrant athletes play in the Olympic experience
“Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, ‘Shadrack, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!' So Shadrack Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, and governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; Their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them" (Daniel 3:26-27). Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego spent time with God daily—giving him glory, seeking his face, and openly proclaiming their devotion to him. When the time for the furnace came, those who had seen and heard their witness could not discount the source of their very lives: the Most High God. ~ Laura Lee Groves Do you struggle to make choices in the hard times of life that prove God is faithful to those around you? In other words, when Jesus says yes, nobody can say no. Jeremiah 29:11 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Ephesians 2:10 10 For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. We read many stories and accounts of people in the Bible who God revealed his plan purpose for their lives. Joseph saw the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to him.” though unclear to him, .it was God's s plan of great things to come. The plan of heaven for daniel was revealed and confirmed. In this episode, we speak with Shadrack Frimpong, a global leader and academic, on his remarkable journey in impact and community development in Africa. Shadrack founded Cocoa360, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to facilitate access to education and improve health care through cocoa farming revenue. Shadrack has a PhD, an honorary doctorate, and two master's degrees and is currently in medical school training to be a physician.Shadrack's story begins in Tarkwa Breman, Ghana, where he was born to a peasant cocoa farmer and a charcoal seller. Despite his economic background, Shadrack has always shown remarkable leadership. From co-founding a Scholarship and Talents Club in high to guiding dozens of students in accessing global educational opportunities to Students for a Healthy Africa and the African Research Academies for Women, Shadrack is deeply committed to addressing crucial issues like health care and education in Africa. Our conversation centres on his unique approach to poverty alleviation. He challenges prevalent misconceptions and emphasizes the centrality of healthcare in addressing poverty. His critique extends to the inefficiencies in current resource allocation and the often misguided focus of development programs. Shadrack believes financial aid alone does not suffice in poverty alleviation; health and well-being are equally critical.Cocoa360, his nonprofit, is a testament to Shadrack's innovative approach. This model ingeniously integrates healthcare, education, and cocoa farming, enabling communities to sustain their health and educational needs through agricultural activity. This self-sustaining model departs from traditional aid systems, promoting community-driven development and empowerment.Shadrack expounds on issues in the cocoa value chain, such as child labour and underpayment and how their model keeps children in school and brings parents to the farm. He also discusses the complexities of policy and advocacy in improving the lives of cocoa farmers. With Cocoa360 as a template and armed with research in medicine and development, Shdrack wants to create a scalable blueprint for sustainable community development in Africa. 5-21-2023 Daniel 1: 17-21 Right Living In A Wicked World Intro: Nebuchadnezzar was king over Babylon. The Jews were led in captivity there. Daniel and his three friends Shadrack, Meshak and Aded-nego were brought before the king as the best of the best of the captive Jews. The king was going to train them in all the ways of the Babylonians. That included the kings food. Daniel and his friends would not eat those things that were considered unclean to them according to Jewish law. Daniel told the prince of the Eunichs that he would not defile himself with the kings meat and wine. Melzar the prince of the Eunichs had a soft spot for Daniel and his friends and agreed to let the Hebrew children eat pulse and water for ten days. After the ten days they reported to the king and they were more healthy than the kings best men. They proved that right living in a wicked world can put us in a bad spot but it will always turn out good for God's people. Genesis 50:20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good…..

‘The way you show people that they matter is aiming your curiosity at them. Ask yourself “what kinds of people do I talk about, but never with?” Whoever is underrepresented in your life will be overrepresented in your imagination.' —Mónica Guzmán Ready to fight back against the confusion, heartbreak, and madness of our dangerously divided times? Find the answers you need by talking with people—rather than about them—and asking the questions you want across the divides you want, curiously. Seeing where people are coming from isn't just possible. It's easier than you think. Mónica Guzmán is a bridge builder, journalist, and author who lives for great conversations sparked by curious questions. Her new book, “I Never Thought of it That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times,” was featured on the Glenn Beck Podcast and named a New York Times recommended read. Monica is Senior Fellow for Public Practice at Braver Angels, the nation's largest cross-partisan grassroots organization working to depolarize America; founder and CEO of Reclaim Curiosity, an organization working to build a more curious world; host of live interview series at Crosscut; and cofounder of the award-winning Seattle newsletter The Evergrey. She was a 2019 fellow at the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, where she studied social and political division, and a 2016 fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, where she researched how journalists can rethink their roles to better meet the needs of a participatory public. She was named one of the 50 most influential women in Seattle, served twice as a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes, and plays a barbarian named Shadrack in her besties' Dungeons & Dragons campaign. A Mexican immigrant, Latina, and dual US/Mexico citizen, she lives in Seattle with her husband and two kids and is the proud liberal daughter of conservative parents. The program will be facilitated by Village Square friend and Executive Director of Bridge USA, Manu Meel. Funding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
How often do you challenge your assumptions about others and get curious - especially about those in your workplace or your family who have different views than you, political or otherwise? In our increasingly polarized society, my guest today, Mónica Guzmán, believes that we can't count on institutions to bridge those divides for us - we have to do it one conversation, one person, at a time. Today, we discussed how she got involved in the work of helping people understand each other better and what role her journalism career played in that mission. We dived into how to bring emotion back into conversations rather than trying to win arguments with data, and a magic question you can ask people who disagree with you to better understand them. We talked about how to have more curious conversations and how to navigate roadblocks. Some great tips for those of you going into election season or tense family dinners over the holidays!Key Takeaways:You can't have a negotiation if there is no talking. We are judging more while talking less and that only leads further to divide, and not to empathy and understanding. The level we think change doesn't matter, one-on-one conversations, is where change happens the most. You often believe that the people that you love and care about who disagree with you are not the majority but an exception to the rule. However, if you talk with others who disagree with you, you will find out that they are not the exception, but the rule"If we don't engage across disagreement, we risk not seeing variables that are really important to other people, and make for a far more honest accounting of everything that's at play when people make decisions." — Mónica GuzmánAbout Mónica Guzmán, Senior Fellow for Public Practice at Braver Angels:Mónica Guzmán is a bridge builder, journalist, and entrepreneur who lives for great conversations sparked by curious questions. THE THESIS: The people who run Joe Biden are showing everyone he is irrelevant to them. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: We have a senile Figurehead who babbles about issuing policy statements his supposed emplyees ignore and overrule. The Bible tells us the story of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who has driven by God into the fields where he grazed on grass like a cow for many years. God Humbles Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4) THE NEWS & COMMENT: The State of collapse in our fallen world: Here is a person who has [her] job because [she] somehow knows [she] is a woman, [she] identifies as black and is sexually attracted to [other] women; this person gets to go on TV and overrule the “President” for whom [she] works. [AUDIO] - WH @PressSec says Biden didn't actually mean the Covid pandemic is over despite saying it: "Just to step back for a second, when he made those comments, he was walking through the Detroit car show, the halls of the Detroit car show, he was looking around." This is hard an isolated incident. The Figurehead is of no consequence to the people who run the Country. Do Biden's words even matter anymore? As his staff once again rushes in to clarify, it isn't clear who's running the country On the other end of the spectrum is Ron DeSantis. He is making The Party live in the world they are trying to create for us and their response are both hilarious and useful. If God affords DeSantis the opportunity to debate the Figurehead, the Governor will be able to show the emptiness of the Party's promises to the people. [AUDIO] - WATCH: Gov. DeSantis after Rep. Jeffries compared him to a human trafficker: “When Biden is flying these people all over the fruited plain in the middle of the night, I didn't hear a peep out of those people!” The next thing Governor DeSantis should do is get copies of the pornographic books The Partry is shoving down the throats of parents and kids and have them always on hand to show to cameras when he is attacked as a book banner. [AUDIO] - CNN's Jake Tapper helps PEN America touts its study of "book bans" in schools because the conservatives don't like LGBTQ/CRT themes. But guess what? CNN won't put the actual graphic images of oral sex et cetera from books on screen so people can understand the fuss. Curating books is not banning. THIS is banning “GaysAgainstGrooming”: BREAKING: After being banned by @PayPal and @Venmo less than 24 hours ago, We have JUST been banned by @Google! Big tech is coordinating a massive attack on our organization for trying to protect children. THIS IS INSANE. In case you have friends who have been conned into the belief that this “sex-ed” is about “good touch” and “bad touch”, show them this: [VIDEO] - A teacher friend and I looked through some of the “sex-ed” curriculum in the separate Country of Washington. Watch and see what we discovered. WARNING: Language, images https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBrS4Dx8wtI THE LISTENERS: Edward I never watch Trump TV shows , I thought he was a crude inarticulate speaker and a number one A hole. I voted for him twice and his policies worked. The only way to explain it; is my what I learned in my 20 years in the Marine Corps: Jerks, nasty , uncouth people win wars . The good marines were mainly jerks. As General Chesty Puller said. “ Until you served brig time your not a true marine”. And during an inspection at Camp Pendleton .” I had enough of this, take me to brig where the real marines are”. All Chesty did was earn 6 Navy Crosses the second highest combat award. Now in 2022 I wish Donald Trump would just go away and play golf. He is to old. 75 to me is terminal for public office. I am 89. —- —- Janine: "Marketing with Terror"--Excellent points in both hours of the show. They brought to mind how much I try to get generations younger than mine to watch "Scrooged". The opening when Bill Murray's character runs his ad for the Christmas show. It shows the horror and speaks in frightful tones and sounds of Acid Rain, Drug Addiction, International terrorism, Freeway killers. Maybe Obama is actually consulting with Bill? Fear isn't new. And it works! Got George HW Bush, establishment member, in the White House. --- --- --- --- Paul: I don't understand why this comparison isn't being made. Hotels could be forced to house the homeless. https://radio.foxnews.com/2022/08/31/la-hotels-could-be-forced-to-house-the-homeless/ Shelter coordinator claims Martha's Vineyard has no housing for migrants https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/watch-shelter-coordinator-marthas-vineyard-no-housing-migrants Blessings, Paul from Port Orchard --- --- --- --- Mark Hello Todd it is 1230am and The Spirit is not letting me sleep so I must share this with you. I beg your forgiveness. I get confused when you talk about God, you talk about the trinity yet you separate them as different and it is so frustrating to where I want to find another podcast. I dont want to though, you try so hard and I have to respect that, so I need to share with you what The Spirit is saying to me. First I dont agree with the term trinity, it is a word that Catholics used to describe God. I do not agree with anything Catholics teach. For instance, the bible says not to call any man father, it also tells us not to bow to any graven image, and most important, go before Jesus to repent of sins and nothing about moving beads in your hand praying to Mother Mary. I believe in God The Spirit, and God The Flesh. If God is all Spirit, then it makes sense that The Holy Spirit is all God, and Jesus in the flesh is all God, and Spirit. In Roman times they believed in a whole mess o gods, these gods had children called demi gods. How do you explain to those who have such beliefs to where it makes sense. God was born of the flesh and had all the power of Himself. There is only one God, His name is Jesus and He has adopted us into His family. We are His children, like Israel, He is also our brother, like Israel He brought them out of Egypt, now He brings us out of bondage from an everlasting fire. By the way satan does not control anything in Hell. Hell is his punishment. Satan controls the Earth now, I am so amazed at all who follow him, even in the churches. So many strong healthy men bowing down to mandates. You think of Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednigo. ( im to tired to look up spelling) There were a lot of Israelites in the crowd of those bowing to the kings nebbys image for fear of burning, church today is no different. Cowards. --- ---- ---- Tracy Todd!!! I tend to be long winded so I will do my very best to keep it short. Ha! 1. I did the 2 rounds at McD's!!!! Shamefully on my way home from small group (yikes) it was a long way from home. I swear I might have done it 3 times!!!! First in Graham, then Sumner and finally Auburn. Oh so scary. But I laughed when you stated it on your cast today!!!! Here's my double whammy for you brother…. Ready… 2. I signed up for Sota!!! Yay!!!! 3. Bought my Bonefrog today. Now in all fairness, I don't drink coffee so I buy it for those I love which reminds me… please give Mr. Crookshank an idea… Christmas pack???? 3 packs of 12 oz. Light dark and medium for $50???? BAM! Corporate Christmas presents done!!!! I'm just saying. Love you brother. PS. Auburn Green River basin is infested with those who refuse to work and get Riverfront RV/Camping for free while KC officials do nothing except spend our tax dollars. Can't wait until God says it's ok to leave the separate country of Washington. - Right girl on the wrong coast!!! --- --- --- --- Tom Want to grow your show?? Todd I love you but todays show made want to cry. Yes you have great ideas but listening to you sometimes is like the joke of the coach that has a great half time speech and then the door to the field is locked. Where is the tea party? Where is the third party. Where is the list of companies that eschew woke and want to start the parallel economy?? Use your power and vast influence to let us all help. Publish and talk about non woke alternatives. Not just your sponsors. I would love to have a list of woke companies that we should all avoid. If you made such a list it would something all your listeners could get behind. Many would share your list and share your show. Secondly where is the tea party. All us “ patriots” are putting all our eggs in the Trump basket. But he is the only one. Where will america be if they finally get to trump. We all know that the republicans are worthless and feckless , but what and where is our alternative?? Use your power and influence to make and get a woke list generated . Talk about it and your listeners will share it with their friends. Talk about a third party and your listeners will share your ideas with their friends. Yes you have great ideas of what needs to be done but as my dad always said “ the steam that blows the whistle, never turns the wheel” . Please use your resources and influence to help us make the needed changes. Keep up the good work, Good job, Tom in Ellensburg.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Wow! This one is critically important! As soon as I got wind of Monica Guzman and her efforts to depolarize America, I knew I had to speak to her. Monica is Director of Storytelling at Braver Angels - the largest cross-partisan organization seeking to build bridges across the political aisles. She is also the author of I Never Thought of It That Way: How To Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations In Dangerously Divided Times. Some of the topics covered include: How is curiosity the answer to our divides, political or otherwise? Why are our current political divides “dangerous?” What would you say to people who have tried to find common ground with people they disagree with, and no matter what they do or say, it just doesn't work. so they give up on even trying? What would you say to someone who is so mistrustful of the media that they no longer take in new information at all?You suggest that no politician, group, or institution can bridge us the way that 1-on-1 conversations will. What makes conversation so powerful? How does human nature stand in the way of curiosity? In your book, you talk about a powerful trip you took to Sherman County in March of 2017. Tell us more about that experience. What practical tips do you have for approaching family gatherings when you don't agree with your loved ones? What tips do you have when engaging online with anyone who doesn't agree with you? If you're trying to have a curious conversation and are hitting a roadblock, how can you change your approach to get more out of the interaction? What a treat to bring you today's conversation with Mónica Guzmán. Mónica is a bridge builder, journalist, and entrepreneur who lives for great conversations sparked by curious questions. She's director of digital and storytelling at Braver Angels, the nation's largest cross-partisan grassroots organization working to depolarize America; host of live interview series at Crosscut; and cofounder of the award- winning Seattle newsletter The Evergrey. Personally, I have been a fan of Mónica and the Braver Angels organization more broadly over the past few years. Their work cannot be understated; we all recognize that polarization is one of the key threats to our society today. If you are someone who wants to build bridges, check out their work. As Mónica discusses, bridge building does not mean that you necessarily shift your views to be more centrist; on the contrary, you can hold strong political opinions grounded firmly in your values AND at the same time understand and respect someone else's opinions and values. In this episode we discuss Mónica's experience of being the liberal daughter of two Trump-voting parents; the different types of polarization we face today; why Mónica believes curiosity is the strongest antidote to polarization; the tendency to have more empathy for our in-group versus out-group; building "short bridges;" the story of Braver Angels and its work across the country, including with members of congress; the future of debates; the problem with trying to control misinformation; how to have productive political conversations with others; and more. Purchase Mónica's book, "I Never Thought It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times": https://www.amazon.com/Never-Thought-That-Way-Conversations/dp/1637740328 Highlights from this episode: "If all you're doing is disqualifying people when they don't affirm facts, that doesn't address what's really underneath it all—which is people's concerns.... The real work is listening to each other's honest concerns." "As a society we need to have a collective search for truth... the problem is that any conversation does not involve all of us, because we're so fractured. in order to make sure that conversation involves all of us, we're going to have to build trust." "Building trust means that you have to listen to someone without correcting them." "We're not going to build truth until we build trust." Nebuchadnezzar builds a giant statue of himself. And Daniel's friends, Shadrack, Meshach, and Abednego, are offered a choice: to bow or to burn. Seth and David talk about the significance of Nebuchadnezzar's "image" and why Jesus as the "image" of God matters so much to the story of Daniel 3. Thank you so much for listening! A long time ago, in a desert far away Jesus winced in pain as He stared at a magnificent angel. Satan, disguised as a mighty being of light stood before Jesus exuding raw power and bold confidence. Jesus, who hadn't eaten in 40 days, tottered on weak legs. His vision blurred, and His stomach grumbled. Satan glanced at Jesus' belly and grinned. “You're hungry.” Then the angel stooped down, picked up a smooth stone and rolled in his powerful hand. Satan spoke. “All the angels and I were there when you created this planet. I remember the awesome power of your words. You spoke and created light. Your words were so powerful.” Satan looked at Jesus and tossed him the stone. Jesus caught it but didn't break eye contact. Satan continued, “You will need that power to accomplish your mission. So before you begin your ministry, all of heaven needs to know that you have the ability to take care of yourself, to save yourself.” Jesus didn't speak. His face was calm, his eyes were bold. Satan couldn't tell if his disguise had worked, so he pointed to the rock still in Jesus' hands. “You haven't performed a miracle or shown a sign of your true nature for thirty years. It's time to speak again, to create again. If you are the Son of God, turn that stone into bread.” Satan had prepared for this very moment for centuries. He had strategized every word, every gesture, every pause for the most powerful effect. And now he waited for the perfect few seconds and then pounced, “Do it, and prove to the Universe that you truly are the Son of God.” Jesus, weak and emaciated from hunger and thirst, seemed like an easy mark in front of the brilliant angel. Yet, beneath the human frailty, Jesus had an invisible Source of strength. He had faith. Jesus too, had been preparing for this moment, countless hours pouring over the Scriptures, meditating on their meanings, memorizing the sacred verses, hundreds of early mornings, up before dawn, walking, listening, and praying in the fields. During all those hours, Jesus had learned one thing: God's got this. No matter what, no matter the issue, no matter the struggle, no matter the need. God's got this. And at this very moment of his temptation, Jesus chose to trust. Jesus chose to pray. And as he silently prayed, Jesus saw the trap. Would Jesus trust in God to provide for His needs, or would He give in to doubt and try to save himself? God called Him into the desert. For 40 days God had kept His body going without food or water. Could Jesus trust in God for just a little bit longer, or was it time to take matters into His own hands? Jesus bowed his head and took a long, slow breath. God's got this, He said silently. Then a Bible verse flashed into His mind. Jesus looked up and stared into satan's eyes, Jesus tossed the rock away. It cracked and rolled across the craggy ground. Jesus spoke. “It is written: Man does not live by bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” In one simple reply, Jesus demolished the doubts, the fears, and the lies of satan. Jesus was saying, “I trust in my Father. I don't have to prove my identity to you or his love for me. I don't have to save myself. God will provide.” Inside Satan boiled with rage. In one simple move, in one simple verse, Jesus had put him in checkmate. He had hoped that Jesus would argue and try to reason with him as so many other humans had done. But Jesus sidestepped the debate and went straight to the root: God's character. Jesus declared that God was good and worthy of His trust, even if he was starving. Satan swallowed his anger and smiled. He must maintain his disguise as an angel. His next temptation was even more sinister, he would trick Jesus through religion. Satan looked up towards heaven, nodded and said, “Now the Father wants me to take you to the temple. It's time to prove your faith.” Then satan snapped his fingers, and suddenly both of them disappeared. The desert was empty, and the rock still lay on the ground. Satan's first temptation failed to work with the greatest Man who ever lived, but it has been quite successful with the rest of us men. The message is loud and clear, “You can't trust in God. You have to save yourself. You are responsible for the outcome.” As humans, we are all responsible for certain areas: our emotions, our thoughts, our attitudes, our actions. But as humans, we are not responsible for the end results, for the outcomes. That is God's responsibility. When we get these two roles mixed up, we fall into the traps of pride, anxiety, greed, or depression. When we struggle with one of these negative choices, we need to step back and see if we are taking God's place and trying to control the outcomes. God does a much better job at saving and solving than we do. Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego understood this. On the majestic plain of Dura, a golden statue shone in the morning sun. Standing over 90 feet tall and glittering with gold, this idol held the promise of life and death. Life for everyone who obeyed the king's command to worship, and death for anyone who dared to defy his orders. Yet when the music played, when thousands fell to their knees, three men remained standing. They could feel the pressure to conform, they knew the rewards for obedience, they could see the black smoke rising from the furnace. But still they stood. Rough hands grabbed them and dragged them before the king. When given another chance, one of the men boldly spoke, “We will only worship the one true God, and He can save us from your fire, but even if He doesn't, we will never bow down to your idol.” Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego took responsibility for their actions, but they left the outcome in God's hands. Faith lets go of the outcome and trusts in God's wisdom, God's timing, and God's purpose. Satan tempts men when he distracts us with problems, with temptations, with deadlines, with bills, with demanding people, as as we take our eyes off Jesus, we forget His promises, His loving character. We forget “Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you,” Matthew 6:33. We forget “The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all,” Psalm 34:19. We forget “I am with you always, even till the end of the world,” Matthew 28:30. We forget that God's got this. Instead, we hear the message of the world, “You're on your own. So Get ‘er done. Grit your teeth and push hard. It's a dog-eat-dog world. Survival of the fittest. You are the master of your fate, the captain of your soul. You are a man. It's all up to you.” When we swallow this poisonous philosophy, our thinking becomes clouded and we begin to think, “I've got this.” And so many men step out of a life of faith and trust and into a life of strain and stress. We compete. We complicate. We compromise. We strap on the weight of the world and chase success, acceptance, wealth, worth. All the while not knowing that we are falling for the first temptation. Will we trust in God to save us or will we try to save ourselves? We forget that because three men of faith chose to trust, Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego not only survived the furnace, but they walked with God in the fire. Jesus is the Blueprint for Men, and in his first temptation of the wilderness, Jesus shows us how to conquer. He used one simple Bible verse, a verse a child could memorize, a verse that reminds us that God's got this. Before the battle, Jesus spent time in the Word. He read it, meditated on it, memorized it. He ate it, ingested it, made it a part of his soul, and when he needed the strength, the clarity, and power of God's word, it was there. That is why our daily habits are so important. That's why our spiritual disciplines are vital. These actions don't save us or earn God's love, but they do equip us, they prepare us for battle, they build our faith in God's goodness. And when our day in the desert comes, when all our strength is gone and satan is standing in front of us, when he fills our minds with doubt and our hearts with fear, when he says that we are on our own and that God won't save us, we will bow our heads and whisper like Jesus, God's got this. And the perfect verse will come to mind. Then we will stand straight, shoulders back, chin held high. We will look evil right in the eye. And we will speak words of power. We will say, “It is written….” And like Jesus, we will be victorious. God Bless.
