It's May, and you know what that means...AANHPI Heritage Month! First, we chat on-the-ground reporter Naomi's visit to Target Field to see Trevor Larnach and Lee Jung Hoo in the flesh, Stephen Nelson's dedication to pronouncing Asian names correctly, and MLB's AAPI Heritage Month posts. Then, our guys were making moves...on and off the roster. Connor Wong and IKF return from the IL, but a buuuunch of guys go on it, and Matt Bowman and Kenta Maeda are DFAed by their clubs. In AAPI Heritage Month?! Is that even legal?! Player news is positive this week, with Steven Kwan having a stellar May (not to mention a sweet article about his mom), Kim Hyeseong is finally called up to the majors, and pitchers stay strong despite an L here and there. And somewhere in there, the Kpop and Kbaseball worlds collide as Naomi declares which Korean MLB player corresponds with which member of BTS. Steve Adams joins Darragh McDonald to discuss options for the Red Sox at first base including moving Rafael Devers there and calling up number 1 MLB prospect Roman Anthony. They also recap the changes made by the Rangers including sending down Jake Burger, waiving Leody Taveras, calling up Evan Carter and replacing their top offensive coach with former player Bret Boone. Other topics include Kenta Maeda getting DFA'd, the Blue Jays building up rotation depth by adding Spencer Turnbull and Jose Urena, and speculating on how Max Scherzer would fare as a reliever.Listener question topics include the Orioles bad start to the season and who could be traded if things don't turn around, if the Tigers would consider extending or trading Tarik Skubal at some point in the next two years, and some under-the-radar guys who are quietly having great seasons.
As Evan Petzold returns from paternity leave, the Detroit Tigers hold the best record in the American League (22-13) and lead MLB with a plus-63 run differential through 35 games in the 2025 season. They've also launched a league-leading 20 home runs since April 28, doing so in the first seven games of their 10-game road trip. What has stood out most over the first 35 games? And what should we expect from Javier Báez moving forward? Tigers radio analyst Bobby Scales joins the Days of Roar podcast to break down Detroit's early success, hitting coach Michael Brdar's game planning, and how opposing pitchers are adjusting to Spencer Torkelson, plus he shares his take on Báez's resurgence. To close the show, Evan and Mark Gorosh analyze the Tigers' decision to cut struggling pitcher Kenta Maeda, share injury updates and debate a key question: Which former No. 1 overall pick inspires more confidence — Spencer Torkelson or Casey Mize? MLB: Detroit Tigers Take Pitcher Kenta Maeda Off 40-Man Roster
It's Opening Day 2025, and we've got the scoop on everything Asians in Baseball around the league! First, Naomi did an Asians in Basketball side quest, Kim issues a warning about the dangers of your family members posting things on the internet that she will then use to verify her hunch that you're Asian, and we get into which Asians have accepted the invitation to the White House. Pitching news brings the good and the bad! The good: Yamamoto has a career high 10 SO, Imanaga has a strong home open, and Bryan Woo continues to be unstoppable. The bad: Kikuchi gets the Ohtani treatment in Anaheim, Sasaki has a tough Dodger Stadium start, Tomoyuki Sugano exits his debut early, and Kim accidentally roots against Kenta Maeda. In position player news, we've all heard about these new "torpedo bats," but did you know that they were created because of Anthony Volpe?? And lots of our guys are off to strong starts in the season, especially our favorite two way player IKF and offensive and defensive machine Tommy Edman. Lastly, Ohtani news is back! But when is he back on the mound???

Steve Adams joins Darragh McDonald in an all-mailbag episode. They discuss many things including whether the Braves will really begin the season without acquiring more depth in their rotation or bullpen, why David Robertson remains unsigned, the possibility of a reunion between the Mets and Jose Iglesias after the recent injury to Nick Madrigal, how Justin Turner will fit onto the Cubs' roster, whether Jackson Jobe will win a rotation job in Detroit over Casey Mize and Kenta Maeda, if the Mariners are looking to trade Luis Castillo, and how deferrals don't actually skirt the luxury tax.
The first two weeks of spring training are in the books, and the Detroit Tigers are off to an undefeated start with a 2-0 record in the Grapefruit League. As roster battles heat up, key storylines emerge, including Jace Jung’s push for the third base job, Trey Sweeney’s situation at shortstop, and Justyn-Henry Malloy’s power bat. The Tigers are hoping Jung can lock down third base for the 2025 Opening Day roster, but will his spring performance be enough to secure the spot? Bobby Scales, the Tigers’ radio analyst, joins the "Days of Roar" podcast to discuss his experience reporting to spring training both as a player and as an executive. He shares his insights on the offseason additions, Jung’s opportunity to win the job at third base, the expectations for young players, and how to assess spring training performances. With Alex Cobb’s injury creating an opening in the starting rotation, a Kenta Maeda vs. Casey Mize competition for the fifth spot is underway. What have we learned about Kenta Maeda’s early camp performance? Plus, updates on Colt Keith and Justyn-Henry Malloy at first base, thoughts on the automated ball-strike challenge system, and when we can expect Javier Báez to make his spring debut. WOWOWOW. This Postseason is bringing the DRAMA! First, the end of an era as the legend Choo Shin Soo retires after 18 seasons of pro ball, and Shota Imanaga's interpreter Edwin Stanberry gets high praise. Let's get into the Wild Card: in the AL, Detroit leaves Kenta Maeda off the roster, Yusei Kikuchi never makes it to his start and will likely be released into free agency, and Tommy Pham is ever the postseason professional. The NL Wild Card brought Sean Manaea's first start of the postseason, the Asianless Brewers are eliminated, and Kyle Higashioka impresses big stars. Now onto the ALDS: Steven Kwan has a big - if controversial - catch in game 2, Anthony Volpe has an impressive at bat but a costly error, and Kenta Maeda STILL hasn't made the roster. It's the NLDS where things really start getting nuts: the Mets bring Kodai Senga back after only 5IP in the regular season, Sean Manaea dedicates his lights-out performance to his aunt, and the series with the most Asians - SD vs. LA - is getting HAIRY. Steven Kwan's big catch: https://www.mlb.com/video/steven-kwans-incredible-diving-catch

In position player updates, Tommy Pham is picked up by the Royals, Connor Joe and Lars Nootbaar are jamming, and Corbin Carroll has turned his season all the way around just in time to dunk on the Dodgers. Pitchers are crushing it this week: our guy Kumar Rocker makes a huge splash in his Triple A debut, Kenta Maeda finally gets a W, Kikuchi / Woo / Manaea continue to deal, and Yu Darvish is back!! And Ohtani Talk finally gets the attention it deserves with the return of Naomi! His bobble head night has fans lined up 8 hours before Decoy's first pitch, he makes history yet again in his quest for 50/50, and we prepare for his grand return to Angel Stadium.

Mike and Rico revisit two conversations from earlier today, starting with what sports-related take you need to let go of in life. Then, they get back into the Tigers talk, wondering whether they'll trot out Kenta Maeda for his next start. David joins in the final segment for the "Big Finish".
Mike and Rico start the show reacting to the Tigers' 9-8 loss last night, wondering how A.J. Hinch continues to trot out Kenta Maeda.

We're rocketing toward the halfway point, and Asians in Baseball show no sign of slowing down! Of course, we have to start by congratulating our 2024 All Stars! Our pitchers have a lot going on: Yusei Kikuchi is a valuable trade chip as we approach the deadline, Kenta Maeda is straight up not having a good time, Sean Manaea continues to ride that Big Grimace Energy, Orion Kerkering proves he can hang with the big dawgs, and Yu Darvish goes on the Restricted List. Lastly, in Ohtani Talk, Elly De La Cruz sets the new bar, Shohei's “slump” continues but he still sets a couple of records, and we discuss the nightmare of what we think he will bring to this year's All Star Game red carpet. Detroit Tigers offense exploded for 11 runs en route to beating the Cleveland Guardians 11-7 in the second game of the three game series at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Andy Ibanez smashed two home runs as part of a four hit night in total while tallying 4 RBI. Ryan Vilade played his first ever game in a Tigers' uniform after being called up from Triple A Toledo and delivered a pair of clutch singles with one scoring two Tigers and the other plating a run. Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez also both turned in multi-hit games as the Tigers offense helped stop a 4-game losing skid. Tigers starter Kenta Maeda got roughed up for seven runs in just two innings pitched, however the Tigers' bullpen was tremendous pitching 7 innings of shutout baseball. Javy Baez played a tremendous shortstop all night making several key defensive plays. With the win, the Tigers have a chance at taking the series tomorrow afternoon against the Cleveland Guardians.
