While the march from Selma to Montgomery lives in the collective memory as a high point of the Civil Rights Movement, there was something else blooming in Alabama beyond the terminus of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, just beyond the camera's eye. Stokely Carmichael—a dynamic, young organizer also from SNCC—used this moment on the sidelines to make connections in the crowd, gathering names and information. For Carmichael and the community whose stories he absorbed, this pivotal moment wasn't a culmination, but a beginning. Nowhere was this next battle better epitomized than in Lowndes County, Alabama, a rural, impoverished county with a vicious history of racist terrorism. In a county that was 80 percent Black but had zero Black voters, laws were just paper without power. This isn't a story of hope but of action. Through first person accounts and searing archival footage, LOWNDES COUNTY AND THE ROAD TO BLACK POWER tells the story of the local movement and young Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organizers who fought not just for voting rights, but for Black Power in Lowndes County. Co-directors Geeta Gandhbir (Black and Missing,I Am Evidence) and Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI, Four Little Girls) join us for a conversation on bringing to life the activism and courage of people like Ella Baker, John Hulett, Courtland Cox, Ruby Sales, Reverend Wendell Paris and one of the most consequential Civil Rights leaders Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael). There are so many of us who walk this path of healing, and we are a diverse group. Today on the pod I interview Meredith Carpenter, a molecular biologist and lifelong believer in the western medical model, on her journey from confusion and despair to surgery, openmindedness, willingness, and healing. Meredith originally contacted me for a REAL TIME HEAL months ago. By the time I read her submission and got in touch, she reported that she was already healed from doing the work on her own! What a joy to interview her anyway. Meredith and I were able to talk about many facets of the healing path, as well as thoughtfully broach and debate whether or not back surgery is necessary, and engage in the kind of discourse which allows for each opinion to be honored. I'm sure there will be tidbits of wisdom for every one of us! Enjoy XOOX n. My New IGTV Series, "I Am Evidence" is now on Instagram @nicolesachslcsw. The backlog is a decades-long police failure that they are now unjustly taking credit for fixing. DNA only counts when it is tied to other DNA found in CODIS after years of not arresting rapists, apparently. Victims voices are never enough unless its a 12:1 victim to rapist ratio. Learn about how the backlog harms cases, victims, and keeps communities vulnerable and unsafe. You can learn more at Endthebacklog.org and the documentary "I Am Evidence", from where some of the facts and examples used throughout can be found. The Joyful Heart Foundation is also mentioned throughout, an excellent non-profit that leads the End The Backlog program.

Series 2, Bonus Episode: I mean... Calling this a bonus episode is overstating it a bit. It’s an additional episode that doesn’t relate entirely to alcoholism. It overlaps with some of the “principles” in the Big Book. And it was inspired by another secular 12-step podcast at aabeyondbelief.org. So, if I were to be generous with myself I’d call it an opinion piece, but in truth it’s more of a rant because I’m fed up with a lot of the noise surrounding rape, assault, and abuse. The Jussie Smollett hoax has done a great disservice to our society. It has created more skepticism around reported hate crimes, which I doubt will actually deter the liars but will instead deter the honest. It’s the same for victims of rape and assault, and I think hoaxes like his have an greater reach. I’ve already listened to men without any first-hand experience of either crime compare Jussie’s hoax to “all the women who lie about being raped.” Good times. And while I think in many cases rape should be likened to a hate crime, at the moment I’m glad it’s not as people latch onto Jussie Smollett’s hoax as an example of a greater truth. After watching “I Am Evidence” last night on HBO it’s very clear that the statistics people like to point to are mostly irrelevant, at least in the cases of reported rape because the cases are never actually handled properly—thousands of never processed rape kits for decades. Wow. Ok that’s enough out of me. This is short. As I say, just an opinionated rant.

Almost 15 years ago, de Lestrade's The Staircase paved the way for the Making A Murderers and Jinxes after it with a lingering, textured look at the case against Michael Peterson. Did his wife Kathleen fall down the stairs? Did he push her or beat her with the notorious blowpoke? Was a wild creature responsible all along? And whose side are the filmmakers on as they slowly pile up the porn, infidelities, and other similar deaths in Peterson's past? Stephanie Early Green is back to talk about the case, the series, what we think really happened now versus when we first watched over a decade ago, and a defense attorney's spin-stinct. Then we assess ID's condensed overview of the case on An American Murder Mystery. The franchise's look at Kathleen's death is economical, but also somehow filler-y and melodramatic, and we wonder if its judgments about Michael's sexuality aren't a worse look than the 2004 take on his alleged motive. Still, there's some new information here -- along with a whole bunch of nonsensical conclusions about flawed forensics -- but will we keep watching? Host Paul Booth reviews I AM EVIDENCE which debuts on HBO Monday April 16th. Directed by Trish Adlesic (Oscar nominee for Best Documentary GASLAND),  and Geeta Gandbhir (Primetime Emmy award winner for By the People: The Election of Barack Obama and When the Levees Broke: A requiem in Four Acts)   Produced by Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU)   I AM EVIDENCE exposes the shocking number of untested rape kits in the United States today. Despite the power of DNA to solve and prevent crimes, hundreds of thousands of kits containing potentially crucial DNA evidence languish untested in police evidencestorage rooms across the country. Behind each of these kits lies an individual's unresolved sexual assault case. Produced by Mariska Hargitay, I AM EVIDENCE follows stories of survivors who have waited years for their kits to be tested, as well as the law enforcement officials who are leading the charge to work through the backlog and pursue long-awaited justice in these cases. The film reveals the high cost of the lingering lassitude surrounding rape investigations in this country, and the positive effects of treating survivors with the respect they deserve and an opportunity for justice.   *** Official Selection of the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival ***   RT: 85 Minutes

Fascinating conversations took place at Barnard College's (NYC) Athena Film Festival last month about women, representation & the power of inclusion at all roles of storytelling. Plus how we can change today's norm. Themes and storytelling at film festivals are universal, so their application and intersection with TV is what prompted me to share observations.   Athena founder Melissa Silverstein of Women & Hollywood was interviewed for episode: Ten Years of Women and Hollywood.   Quick takes on documentaries: Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story and I Am Evidence, produced by Law and Order SVU's Mariska Hargitay through her Joyful Heart Foundation. Leaders of stage, digital, academia & film addressed "revising the Canon" - & how we shift the acceptable norms of storytelling.
