Luis and Nicole Sachs dig into the depths of pain. She believes pain is caused by fear, and the meaning we assign to the pain, keeping the nervous system in fight or freeze. If we think something is wrong with us, a stress response results, because we become our own threat. Nicole lived in her own cage of pain, fear and shame until she found Dr. Sarno's work. He believes back pain is due to bottled up rage that is not societally acceptable. His work prompted Nicole to pause when the pain arose and ask herself if she was angry, and what was angering her. But she didn't limit herself to anger. She played with it, and explored emotions. The pain dissipated with her practice. A reoccurrence of the pain in the early years of motherhood shook her to the core and led her to work with Dr. Sarno in person. In her journey she developed Journal Speak, built on Dr. Sarno's foundation. Her formula is Journal Speak + science + the dissolution of shame = freedom. Tune in to hear more of her process and journey, plus how to start your own Journal Speak practice. LEARN HOW TO JOURNALSPEAK This week's episode is a little different than usual. I'm sharing my conversation with Jordan Harbinger from The Jordan Harbinger Show, where Jordan invited me into a thoughtful, curious, and respectful conversation about chronic pain, mind-body medicine, and the work I have spent my life teaching. What I loved most about this interview is that Jordan approached it the way so many people do when they first encounter this paradigm: interested, intelligent, and not willing to simply accept an idea without understanding it. That kind of skepticism is not a problem for me. In many ways, it is the perfect doorway into the work. In this conversation, we talk about what it really means when the brain and nervous system are involved in chronic symptoms, and why that never means the pain is fake, imagined, or “all in your head.” We explore how the body can become an expression of what the human being has not been able to process, and how chronic fight-or-flight can keep people stuck in very real pain, fatigue, anxiety, and other symptoms long after the original danger has passed. I also explain why belief matters, why doing the emotional work matters, and why patience and kindness for yourself are not soft add-ons, but central pieces of recovery. Jordan asks the questions many skeptical listeners might be thinking: How can pain be real if nothing is structurally wrong? How do emotions create physical symptoms? What does someone actually do with this information once they begin to understand it? These are the questions that make this conversation so valuable, whether you are brand new to this work, trying to explain it to someone you love, or deep into your own healing and wanting a clearer, more grounded way to understand what is happening in your body. I'm grateful to Jordan for bringing this conversation to his audience and for giving me the chance to represent so many people who have been misunderstood, dismissed, or left without answers. My hope is that this episode helps more people see that chronic pain and chronic symptoms are not life sentences. There is a way forward, and it begins with understanding the body not as broken, but as brilliantly protective. Enjoy! XOOX n. Mind Your Body author Nicole Sachs explains how pain is your brain's alarm, and why facing buried feelings can reverse symptoms once thought permanent.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1337What We Discuss with Nicole Sachs:Pain is the brain's protective alarm, not a malfunction. The brain can both create and remove pain. It generates real symptoms to force you to slow down and stop returning to environments it has flagged as unsafe.Symptoms are real, but the source may be misdiagnosed. Chronic pain, IBS, migraines, fatigue, and long COVID aren't imaginary, but the nervous system — not the body part being treated — is often where the real trouble originates.A nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight produces physical illness. When the brain perceives constant "predators" — a hostile boss, money stress, unresolved trauma — it stays in survival mode, driving inflammation, muscle spasm, and nerve pain.Repressed emotion is read by the body as a threat. When difficult feelings go unseen and unfelt, the nervous system treats them as a predator — surfacing as flares, migraines, or chronic conditions long after the original event. You have far more power to heal than you realize. By learning the neuroscience and processing buried emotions through tools like JournalSpeak, people teach the nervous system it's safe — and many reverse chronic symptoms once thought permanent. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! In honor of June being Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, she shares the full picture: the triggers, the treatments, the nervous system connection, and the emotional weight that comes with an invisible illness. Nikki covers the metaphysical side (think Louise Hay and Nicole Sachs' journal speak method), what her neurologist has her on, the supplements that actually help, and what daily life really looks like when your brain feels like it's on fire. This one is raw, real, and for anyone who's ever been told to "just drink some water."

Learn how to JournalSpeak ➡️  https://tinyurl.com/2ph33u2s In this episode, I'm joined by the wonderful Claire Birnie, whose story is such a powerful reminder that healing does not always arrive in one clean, linear, cinematic moment. Claire lived with chronic pelvic and vaginal pain for more than two decades. After years of medical searching, diagnoses that named the pain but did not resolve it, countless treatments, medications, physical therapies, and the deep loneliness that can come with symptoms people are afraid to talk about, Claire eventually found the work of Dr. Sarno, JournalSpeak, and our mindbody approach. What I love so much about this conversation is Claire's honesty about the long way around. She talks about researching, resisting, comparing herself to other recovery stories, wondering if she was doing it wrong, and slowly learning that every part of her process belonged. We talk about good-girl conditioning, conflict avoidance, the fear of being seen, the shame of not knowing how to feel, and the way the nervous system can create symptoms in the very places we most want to hide. Claire's recovery was not about doing this perfectly. It was about becoming safe enough to be herself, to speak up, to take risks, to have her own back, and to stop abandoning herself in the name of being acceptable. Claire has spent years helping hold this work for others — first as an admin of the original JournalSpeak Facebook page, and now as an admin of Nicole Sachs' Support Circle, where she continues to offer steadiness, wisdom, and lived proof to people who are still finding their way. Her story is also in MIND YOUR BODY! Claire is now the Co-Director of Living Proof, a UK-based, recoveree-led nonprofit devoted to sharing the science and possibility of recovery from chronic pain and other neuroplastic symptoms. Living Proof was founded in 2022 and offers recovery stories, films, blogs, resources, professional education, and a growing community for people who need to know they are not alone. Claire's own story is featured there as part of her mission to bring this message especially to people in the UK, where many still feel that mindbody and neuroplastic recovery work is happening “somewhere else.” Through Living Proof, she is helping amplify voices, provide credible resources, and offer exactly what she once needed most: hope, connection, and the living evidence that recovery is possible. This week we are re-releasing a Substack Live from our Breaker community! Mayim and Jonathan are joined by Nicole Sachs, LCSW, a renowned psychotherapist, author, and speaker who has become an internationally recognized pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine. As the architect of the “JournalSpeak” method and host of The Cure for Chronic Pain podcast, Sachs has dedicated her career to treating patients suffering from chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, and fatigue by addressing the underlying emotional components of physical symptoms. Nicole explains that our brains often use physical pain as a “protective” distraction to keep us from feeling overwhelming emotions like rage, shame, or grief. Think of it like an emotional reservoir—when it gets too full, the pressure has to go somewhere, and often, it manifests as a backache, a migraine, or digestive issues. Nicole's story is as relatable as it is miraculous. After a year of being so locked up in pain that she couldn't even put her toddlers in their car seats, she had a spiritual and psychological breakthrough. By getting brutally honest with herself through a specific type of journaling, her chronic back pain was 80% gone by the next morning. Nicole breaks down her healing method into three simple parts that anyone can start today: - Knowledge: Understanding that your brain and body are constantly communicating. - The Work (Journal Speak): A specific, 20-minute daily practice of “unbridled rants” to get the hidden stress out of your system. - Self-Compassion: Learning to change the way you talk to yourself to help your nervous system feel safe. This approach has helped people struggling with fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, anxiety, PTSD and addiction. As Nicole puts it, pain isn't a “broken” part of you—it's information. Once you learn how to listen to what your body is trying to say, the possibilities for your life are endless. She breaks down how unresolved emotional stress, nervous system dysregulation, and lived trauma can manifest as real physical symptoms—and why pain is often the body's protective response rather than just structural damage. Through her work, she has helped thousands reclaim their lives from chronic pain, anxiety, and related conditions, proving that healing is possible when we understand how the brain and body truly communicate.Together, Mike "C-Roc" and Nicole explore what it means to turn adversity into purpose, why passionate “obsession” with your message can be a force for good, and how awareness of our internal emotional “reservoir” can change everything from relationships to physical health. Chronic pain therapist Nicole Sachs explains how mind-body therapy and nervous system regulation work together to alleviate long-term pain and heal generational trauma in episode 232 of the Far Out with Faust podcast.Nicole Sachs, LCSW, is a psychotherapist known for helping people recover from persistent physical symptoms by addressing emotional stress patterns, fear, and conditioned responses in the brain. She trained with John Sarno, MD, a rehabilitation physician at NYU's Rusk Center for Rehabilitative Medicine whose work helped popularize the TMS (Tension Myoneural Syndrome) model. Through her clinical practice, podcast, and book Mind Your Body, Sachs teaches that unresolved emotions and inherited family dynamics can surface as real physical symptoms — and that education and self-compassion are key to breaking the cycle. In this conversation, Faust and Nicole examine why so many people live with ongoing physical symptoms despite doing everything “right.” Their discussion moves through pain, emotion, and perception, questioning what the body is responding to when tests come back inconclusive. Sachs challenges common assumptions about recovery and introduces a different way of understanding what the body may be signaling when it refuses to settle. In this episode:

This is an episode of a new podcast I really like called Gen X at Midlife. The show was created by TBAS contributor, Courtney Daniels. In this episode she talks to her longtime friend Tess Hawes about her experience of midlife crisis, Courtney's self-rejecting ambition, Tess' divorce and career pivot, and how to get out of depression. They touch on the book "Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life" by James Hollis, "Mind Your Body" by Nicole Sachs, and Courtney's therapist, Lisa Chen, whom she highly recommends! But the alternative—conflict—feels unsafe too. How do we walk that tightrope, honoring our need for authenticity and belonging? Differing ideas & opinions are everywhere — family, friends, online. We have two default options: Repress/avoid → peace outside, conflict inside → symptoms. Explode/confront → release inside, rupture outside → unsafe. Sometimes I have a free hour or two, and my favorite activity is to put in my AirPods, listen to a podcast, and walk. It feels so free and renewing, and sometimes it's where I come up with my best ideas for this podcast. Recently, I was listening to This American Life, Suddenly! A Mirror! and a story in it made me think - how many of us are living our lives defined by past experiences that have encoded us with SHAME? Too many, I presume. Join me for a conversation which may just wake you up to some automatic thought patterns and self-definitions that are no longer serving you. In your TMS recovery, it can make all the difference. Lisa and I found ourselves talking about a frequently asked question in our communities: Won't thinking about my dark stuff make me worse? This is a typical fear of many people endeavoring TMS work. I have such empathy for the perceived quandary - it makes sense that paying attention to seemingly negative content might make it grow. Yet, we both know this is the opposite of truth. Then Lisa suggested a juxtaposition: let's consider the difference between rumination and excavation. Whereas rumination is automatic and unproductive, excavation is intentional and leads to healing. I took the challenge of explaining it through the lens of JournalSpeak, and here we are! I think this episode will enable you to challenge your resistance and open yourself to the incredible transformation that JournalSpeak offers. Lots of love from both of us! A lot of people in our communities talk about the difficulty of the “messy middle” - when you are no longer asleep and unaware that your symptoms are TMS, you are doing the work and carrying on, but you're also challenged daily by the feeling that this is a lot to handle. Jamie, an OMEGA alum, has also been a member of our Heal With Nicole community, and honors the role of connection and friendship in navigating this messy middle place. Lisa and I treasure this experience as well. It reveals the importance of connectedness and the strength of the human spirit. She joins us today alongside Jamie to discuss our shared experiences in both our virtual and in-person OMEGA communities, and the ways in which our pain becomes an entry point to finding “our people” - being able to love and connect in new and deepening ways. Join us for a conversation that reveals the messy middle as, in a sense, all of life. When we embrace it as such, we have to power to transform both our physical and emotional health. It's so easy to get caught up in the "physical" when you are stricken with chronic pain out of nowhere. This is exactly what happened to Adam. Otherwise healthy for his whole life, Adam began having severe pelvic and back pain, and spent years in the frustrating cycle of specialists and failed treatments. In retrospect, Adam can see so many things in his life that he was unconsciously avoiding, key among them facing his social anxiety and "addiction" to the gym for safety. Today, chronic pain free and full of wisdom and perspective, Adam and I unpack it all. You don't have to be a man or a person who's expereinced pelvic pain to get SO MUCH out of this episode. Agnes' first symptom was years of back pain after a horseback riding incident. It was then that she stumbled upon this podcast, but she was not yet ready to embrace the paradigm of MindBody medicine. Then came the most unsettling diagnosis - Dry Eye. It may sounds innocuous, but Agnes was in 24 hour pain and discomfort. She could no longer wear the contact lenses she had used without incident for eighteen years, and she was advised that makeup was also forbidden. Agnes' doctor went as far as to tell her that she would most certainly be suffering for a lifetime, and things would only get worse. It wasn't until he advised her to stop breastfeeding to allow for daily use of steroid eye drops that Agnes put her foot down. As I say in my story: "Mess with me, but don't mess with my kids!" This led Agnes back to my work and pod, and wait until you hear how it went. Join us for a conversation that will give you confidence, hope, and the will to do this work for yourself. With love, n. Hey Heal Squad! We're back with Part 2 of our amazing convo with Nicole Sachs, LCSW, psychotherapist, mindbody expert, and author of the upcoming book Mind Your Body. This time, Nicole is diving deep into her transformative practice called JournalSpeak, a method that's helped her and so many others heal from chronic pain, anxiety, autoimmune symptoms, and more by getting to the root of what's really going on: unprocessed emotions. She breaks down how our subconscious beliefs, people-pleasing patterns, and early-life stressors can keep us sick—even when we think we've “moved on.” Nicole also shares personal stories (including how she healed a severe spinal condition doctors said was permanent!) and the exact tools that helped clients like Ricki Lake and Shoshana Bean reclaim their health. If you've been doing all the things but still feel stuck, this might be the missing piece. Tune in!  HEALERS & HEAL LINERS:  JournalSpeak as a Path to Healing: Nicole shares how her daily 20-minute practice, JournalSpeak, helps release repressed emotions and subconscious beliefs that keep the nervous system stuck in survival mode—unlocking real, lasting healing from chronic pain and anxiety. The Pain-Protection Connection: Many chronic symptoms are not signs of physical damage, but messages from a dysregulated nervous system trying to keep you safe from emotional discomfort or trauma. Nicole explains how understanding this rewires the healing process. The Cost of People-Pleasing: Long-term patterns of perfectionism and putting others first may feel safe, but Nicole reveals how this emotional suppression often contributes to chronic symptoms and a dysregulated body. -- HEAL SQUAD SOCIALS IG: https://www.instagram.com/healsquad/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@healsquadxmaria HEAL SQUAD RESOURCES: Heal Squad Website:https://www.healsquad.com/ Heal Squad x Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HealSquad/membership Maria Menounos Website: https://www.mariamenounos.com My Curated Macy's Page: Shop My Macy's Storefront Prenuvo: Prenuvo.com/MARIA for $300 off Delete Me: https://bit.ly/43rkHwi   code: SQUAD EPISODE RESOURCES:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicolesachslcsw/  Website: https://www.yourbreakawake.com/  Mind Your Body Book: https://www.yourbreakawake.com/book  Nicole on Heal Squad: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/724-emotions-cause-physical-discomfort-w-nicole-sachs/id1320060107?i=1000626680062  ABOUT MARIA MENOUNOS: Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV personality, actress, 2x NYT best-selling author, former pro-wrestler and brain tumor survivor, Maria Menounos' passion is to see others heal and to get better in all areas of life. Nicole's here to break down why so many of us are stuck in chronic fight-or-flight mode, and how that stress can actually lead to physical symptoms like fatigue, back pain, migraines, anxiety, and even long COVID. She shares the powerful concept of the emotional reservoir—how our repressed feelings (yes, even the ones we don't know we're holding on to) can overflow and start showing up in the body. Nicole also dives into the real science behind why your body might be using symptoms to protect you… and what you can do about it. If you've ever thought “everything in my life seems fine, but I still feel off”, tune in and get ready to feel seen, understood, and empowered to heal! HEALERS & HEAL LINERS:  Chronic pain isn't random, it's a protective response. Your nervous system may use symptoms like migraines, fatigue, or illness as a way to avoid deeper emotional threats. Your “emotional reservoir” could be overflowing. Suppressed emotions from your past may be fueling present-day anxiety, illness, or burnout—without you even realizing it. Self-compassion is essential. So often we hear the story of, "a lifetime of TMS," and Tanja is no exception. As the symptom imperative bounced around her body, she went from doctor to doctor, desperate for a solution. When, finally, she found herself at rock bottom and truly worried for her mental health, she opened to the possibilities that this work invites. It's simple, but it's not easy. Tanja put in the time and effort, and stuck with it. Today, she is totally free. Join us for an inspiring and informative conversation on both healing and the power of not doing it alone. XOOX n.
