The day after Election Day, the Lodgecast tried to shake off the post-election blues by watching Robert Zemeckis's new film Here starring Forrest Gump and Jenny (Tom Hanks and Robin Wright). Zemeckis has had quite a run on the Lodgecast with three films: the Lodgecast classic Welcome to Marwen (2018), the remake of The Witches (2020), and Holy Smokeo himself, live-action Pinocchio (2022). Here (2024) looked to be another wild Zemeckis film-in-the-making, all taking place in one room, in one house over the course of decades. Actually millions of years as the film starts with dinosaurs, eventually leading to Native Americans, and then a role for Benjamin Franklin's illegitimate son William. It's based on the 2014 graphic novel by Richard McGuire, with a screenplay by Zemeckis and Eric Roth. Most of the nonlinear story covers a post-World War II family and the ups and downs of their lives from the late 1940s to the early 2000s. Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly play the parents of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. Hanks and Wright are severely de-aged and then re-aged over the course of the film using the magic of digital effects. While our reviews varied, this Zemeckis outing wasn't as painful as the previous three!
Look, I try not to be hyperbolic, but this may be the most special episode of Riverdale Season Six: The Podcast to date... We love all our guests equally of course, but it's not every day you get THE Dr. Curdle Jr. to appear!!! The one and only Nikolai Witschl (Riverdale, Welcome to Marwen, Deadpool 2) joins the ever intrepid Omar and Sara as they explore the dangerous world of creepy crawlies. We've got fixers, black widows, and the best medical examiner/coroner/professional freak this side of the Sweetwater river!

On episode 37 we discuss Miracle Mile (1988), which was picked by one of our supporters on Patreon! This apocaltypic thriller was written and directed by Steve De Jarnatt. Before getting into the plot of the movie, we discuss two earlier films that Steve was involved in: Strange Brew (1983) and Cherry 2000 (1987). The mics kept rolling after this episode as we talked about another Patreon movie pick: Welcome to Marwen (2018). Robert Zemeckis was one of the most prominent directors of the eighties and nineties. His string of hits is almost unmatched. Think about it - Romancing the Stone, the Back to the Future Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, etc. This is why it's so bizarre that a live-action Disney Pinocchio movie directed by Zemeckis and starring his best favorite leading man, Tom Hanks, was essentially dumped to streaming. It came and went without much fanfare, while it would have been a cinematic event fifteen years ago. WTF Happened? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into Zemeckis' career, which began with the underrated pair I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars before Romancing the Stone made him an A-lister. We dig into how he was actually fired from Cocoon because the Fox brass thought Romancing the Stone would flop, leading to him making Back to the Future with pal Steven Spielberg. We dig into the then-impossible idea of mixing live-action and animation in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, show some love to Forrest Gump, and examine some underrated gems like Death Becomes Her.But WTF Happened to Robert Zemeckis? In the 2000s, Zemeckis became a proponent of Motion Capture technology, leading to The Polar Express and Beowulf, movies which are a little uncanny valley if you revisit them today. Even if he's not quite the mega-watt hitmaker he once was, with films like Welcome to Marwen being disastrous, he's still capable of making gems like the fantastic Denzel Washington movie Flight. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Mathew Plale), narrated and edited by Taylor James Johnson, we dig into the director's life, legacy and future.
Can the look of a movie or series tell the story as much as the actors in it? Let's deep dive into the world of the dance of light and shadow through the lens of Emmy-nominated cinematographer C Kim Miles.Kim's remarkable journey from the colorful bustle of Malaysia to the high-stakes soundstages of Hollywood will captivate you. Starting from being a humble grip to a sought-after industry visionary, his international perspective brings a unique flavor to projects like "Yellowjackets" and "The Brothers Sun," revealing how a diverse upbringing can deeply enrich one's artistic expression.Imagine the adrenaline rush of getting the call to meet a legendary director like Robert Zemeckis overnight, leading to a whirlwind of anticipation and opportunity to be the DP in the Zemeckis film "Welcome to Marwen." Kim and I explore the mix of anticipation and disbelief that encapsulates these serendipitous occurrences in the film industry. In this episode, we also discuss the synergy between a director and cinematographer as they sculpt the visual narrative of a film—as if in a dance, where every step is a frame and every turn is a new shade of light. Kim's fondness for indie projects, even after big-budget spectacles, underscores a heartfelt dedication to cinema that's driven by passion more than paycheck. Join me for this masterclass in passion, perseverance, and cinematic storytelling that'll leave you yearning to create, connect, and chase your own dreams. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are imagining that we're saving our friends from the worst scourge on the planet. We watched the 2018 film from Robert Zemeckis, Welcome to Marwen. We're encouraging you to do two things this week:Read up on Mark Hogancamp, the focus of this film, and watch the documentary Marwencol to get a first hand view of this fascinating person. If you're dealing with trauma of your own, seek out help and companionship. The story of Mark Hogancamp extends far beyond what's shown in this film and is worth your time. Steven touches on parts of the documentary in this episode, but there's a wealth of information out there. And as this film shows, there are always people out there who want you to be okay, no matter your circumstances. There are always people who want to be there for you. There is always a way through.(Recorded on June 14, 2023)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Welcome to Marwen - The Movie Database (TMDB)Welcome to Marwen trailer - YouTubeMarwencol (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Robert Zemeckis — The Movie Database (TMDB)Cast Away (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Team America: World Police (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Avengers: Endgame (2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Polar Express (2004) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Steve Carell — The Movie Database (TMDB)Small Soldiers (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Blade (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Back to the Future (1985) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Little Miss Sunshine (2006) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Tom Hanks — The Movie Database (TMDB)Avatar (2009) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Mythic Quest (TV Series 2020- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Official Behind The Scenes Video | God of War: Ragnarok - YouTubeBenedict Cumberbatch - Behind-the-Scenes of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug - YouTubeBorn on the Fourth of July (1989) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show

Holy Smokeo! There were two major Pinocchio films that came out late this year and we opted for the most painful one! Director Robert Zemeckis, the genius behind the movie Welcome to Marwen (2018), has returned with a direct-to-Disney-Plus live-action remake of Walt Disney's beloved 1940 animated film Pinocchio. We knew this one was gonna hurt, but we were unprepared for the level of pain Zemeckis was going to inflict upon us this time. Will this $150 million soulless production finally put an end to Zemeckis's career?! Probably not! Tom Hanks is Geppetto, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is the voice of Pinocchio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the voice of Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key is the voice of "Honest" John, Cynthia Erivo is The Blue Fairy, and Lorraine Bracco is the voice of a new seagull character called Sofia. Brace yourselves for Pinocchio and have a Happy New Year! Holy Smokeo!

Guests of the podcast are Joy Meek and Chris-Annmarie Spencer, principals of Wheeler Kearns Architects, Chicago-based studio, founded in 1987 by Dan Wheeler, joined in 1991 by another founding principal, Larry Kearns. Both recipient of significant recognitions, Joy and Chris-Annmarie represent two brilliant voices of an authentic collective structure, a team supported by the aspiration to work in chorality and design inclusive spaces. The practice, embracing a wide range of typologies with attentive dedication to sustainability and a long, close collaboration with nonprofit, mission-driven organizations, has been, in recognition of the outstanding achievements produced over time, twice named by AIA Chicago's ‘Firm of the Year', honoured with five AIA Chicago Design Excellence awards in 2020, Driehaus Award, while their work is included in the permanent collections of the Chicago History Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.Dan Wheeler is also professor of architecture at the University of iIlinois and has received, in quality of mentor, and inspirational figure the 2017 AIA Illinois Nathan Clifford Ricker Award for Architecture Education. The conversation starts with a reflection on some thoughts by Dan Wheeler about his idea of architecture and continues with the personal experiences Joy and Chris-Annmarie went through after their first encounter with Dan, deepening their passionate involvement at service of people, in the effort to activate inclusive, meaningful social spaces. It appears inevitable to dwell on the difficult context of a city like Chicago, where their interventions mainly take place, addressing how they strive to bridge deep social gaps.Authors of many educational projects, they express the firm's philosophy, intending with every proposal not just to offer only one solution but multipurpose occasions for cross-pollination between program types and uses, focusing on ‘Granor Greenhouse', an exemplar, recently completed work .The conversation continues with a similar nonprofit project, 'Marwen', in the different field of arts, able to create inclusive atmospheres and to encourage artistic talents. ‘The Night Ministry', a renovation providing a new home, healthcare and human connection to members of the Chicago community experiencing homelessness or poverty, is another important initiative embracing vital aims, including involvement and awareness-raising of young, since from early adolescence, towards social responsibilities.‘The Momentary', the new catalyzing multidisciplinary contemporary art destination of Bentonville, with its inclusive mission and vibrant cultural experiences concludes this interesting encounter.

Kevin Baillie's career at the forefront of visual effects and screen storytelling began in 1999 and is now part of industry folklore. As an 18-year old high school senior, he and his friend created a short film involving a futuristic speeder race through his school, primarily to attract the attention of Star Wars producer Rick McCallum. The short was hugely successful and the tactic worked with Kevin soon finding himself working alongside George Lucas in the visualisation department on STAR WARS: Episode One. Since then, Kevin has continued to blaze a trail in innovating the storytelling process. He formed a long-term creative collaboration with Robert Zemeckis, supervising the visual effects on films such as FLIGHT, THE WALK and THE WITCHES. Recently, this has started to incorporate increasing amounts of real-time and virtual production techniques into the workflows of his projects. In this episode Kevin reflects on the evolution of these creative tools, the benefits they offer to the storytelling process and explains why "virtual production will allow filmmakers to tell stories that would otherwise be untellable". About Kevin Baillie Kevin's VFX career started at age 18 when he when he joined Lucasfilm's JAK Films as a pre-visualization artist on Star Wars: Episode I. In the following 25 years, Kevin has blazed a bright path, helming VFX at The Orphanage on features including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Night at the Museum, Superman Returns, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Hellboy, and supervising cutting-edge motion capture feature films at ImageMovers Digital. In 2010, he co-founded the groundbreaking VFX studio Atomic Fiction, whose outstanding work on films such as The Walk, Allied, and Flight garnered awards recognition and critical acclaim. In 2018 Atomic Fiction, having grown to over 300 employees in 2 countries, was acquired by Deluxe Entertainment. Kevin's VFX Supervisor credits also include two Star Trek movies, two Transformers features, Welcome to Marwen and The Witches. Most recently, Kevin acted as VFX Supervisor and 2nd Unit Director on Disney's live-action Pinocchio - another title in his long collaboration with Director Robert Zemeckis. Kevin also founded the venture-funded cloud rendering technology company, Conductor Technologies, is active with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and is an active member of the Directors Guild of America. This episode is presented in partnership with Epic Games and Unreal Engine. More at www.futureoffilm.live

Kathryn Rodrigues talked about being a 3rd culture kid, growing up in many countries and returning to the U.S. as a teenager, but not feeling at home. I loved how she talked about the space of transition, that time in motion and trying to capture that feeling in her work. She also shone a light on the world of freelance teaching artists, balancing teaching with art-making and parenting. Kathryn talked about the structure of her teaching time before the pandemic and how she brought the city of Chicago into the classroom through field trips to art venues as well as sharing local artists, working to create equity and improve access to cultural resources. She shared the idea of curriculum development centered around local BIPOC artists, rather than including them as an exception to the white-centered curriculum. That brought up a great question we can all ask ourselves - what is at the center of your teaching? Kathryn Rodrigues is a Chicago based artist and educator. She was born in Georgia and within weeks was on the move to her family's next destination. Her family moved to 10 different locations within the next 13 years, including Brazil, Mozambique, Portugal and Germany, before finally settling in Illinois. Being raised as a “third-culture kid” left her with a deep interest in cultural identity, notions of belonging and longing, domestic life, and the natural world. She often uses both visual and symbolic systems of mapping in her work as a way to express her interior life and navigate the world around her. Her work represents an investigation of and a reflection on the collection of experiences and memories that shape her identity. Kathryn received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Illinois and a Master of Science in Art Education from the Massachusetts College of Art. She has taught courses for children and adults at the Massachusetts College of Art, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and Marwen. Exhibition highlights include the Chicago Cultural Center, Copley Society of Art, Woman Made Gallery, Midwest Center for Photography, Spilt Milk Gallery, Open House Contemporary and ARC Gallery.
