Top Stories for August 2nd Publish Date: August 2nd From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, August 2nd and Happy Birthday to Carroll O’Connor I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. State obtains indictment against Cobb County clerk Study says Dacula is one of America's five safest suburbs, Buford also in top 10 Georgia Power seeking certification of new energy projects Plus, the Stripers report with JR Ritchie, starter in the MLB All-Star Futures Game and the Braves’ No. 2 prospect All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! ---------------------- Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG ---------------------- STORY 1: State obtains indictment against Cobb County clerk  Cobb County Court Clerk Connie Taylor was indicted Thursday, accused of ordering the destruction of government emails and financial records in 2022. The charges? Two counts each of destroying public records and violating her oath of office. The allegations stem from an open records request in October 2022. Taylor allegedly told an employee to delete the documents. Calls to Taylor’s office Thursday? Dodged. One staffer even forwarded a call to a local newspaper. The GBI and Carr’s White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit presented evidence to a grand jury, leading to the indictment. For now, Taylor is presumed innocent, but the case has echoes of a 2019 conviction Carr secured against a former Atlanta press secretary for delaying open records. Transparency, it seems, remains a battle. STORY 2: Study says Dacula is one of America's five safest suburbs, Buford also in top 10 If you live in Dacula or Buford, you’ve got bragging rights—both suburbs just ranked among the safest in America, according to a new study by SmartAsset. Dacula snagged the No. 5 spot, with Buford right behind at No. 6. Not bad, right? The study looked at everything from violent and property crime rates to traffic deaths, drug overdoses, and even excessive drinking. Dacula’s numbers? Just 0.0017 violent crimes per capita and 0.0062 property crimes. Buford wasn’t far off, but Dacula edged it out. Both cities tied in other categories, like traffic deaths (9.34 per 100,000) and overdose rates. Oh, and housing? Dacula’s median monthly cost is $1,547, while Buford’s is a bit lower at $1,300. Georgia had a few other cities in the rankings—Canton at No. 20, Acworth at 63—but Dacula and Buford are clearly leading the pack. STORY 3: Georgia Power seeking certification of new energy projects Georgia Power is making big moves, asking state regulators to greenlight nearly 10,000 megawatts of new energy projects. That’s a lot of power—enough to keep millions of homes and businesses running, no matter the weather. Most of it—about 8,000 megawatts—comes from projects already approved in 2022, including natural gas plants, solar paired with batteries, and standalone battery storage systems. Another 1,886 megawatts comes from this year’s plans, with similar projects in the mix. But not everyone’s thrilled. Environmental groups argue the new gas turbines double down on fossil fuels instead of pushing harder for renewables. Still, Georgia Power is leaning into battery storage, with projects underway in Bibb, Lowndes, Floyd, and Cherokee counties—and more on the way. The PSC will hold hearings this fall, with a final vote in December. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back ---------------------- Break 2: Ingles Markets ---------------------- STRIPERS INTERVIEW STORY 6: GCPS Community-Based Mentoring Program seeking volunteers The Gwinnett County Public Schools Community-Based Mentoring Program is on the hunt for 200 volunteers to step up and mentor students during the 2025-26 school year. Now in its 16th year, the program has already made a huge impact—last year alone, it supported over 2,550 students in grades 4-12. “It was one of our best years yet,” says James Rayford, the program’s director. They reached every high school, middle school, and all 20 clusters, with a 100% graduation rate for two years running. This year? They’re aiming even higher, adding job-shadowing and internships to the mix. The idea is simple but powerful: one caring adult can change a child’s life. Volunteers can mentor one-on-one or in small groups, helping students build confidence, communication skills, and a sense of belonging. STORY 7: Beyond the classroom: GGC interns gain invaluable real-world experience Summer internships aren’t just résumé fluff—they’re where classroom theory meets the messy, unpredictable real world. For Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) students, it’s a chance to figure out what they love (or don’t) and grow in ways they didn’t expect. Take Kimberly Ramirez, a senior marketing major. “I thought marketing was just ads and social media,” she admits. Turns out, it’s strategy, planning, and making decisions that actually matter. Her internship at InTouch Financial Group? A game-changer. She even runs bilingual webinars—Marketing Monday—teaching agents how to market themselves. Then there’s Joceyln Rubio-Camacho, a finance major. Forget the cubicle stereotype. At Majors Management, she’s learned accounting is as much about people as it is spreadsheets. For cinema major Tony Arreaga, interning at Crazy Legs Production in Atlanta has been a whirlwind. One day he’s hauling props in a box truck; the next, he’s designing sets for a Netflix documentary. “It’s a lot like the Marines,” says the 10-year veteran. “Managing people, equipment, locations—it’s all about discipline.” And Emily Zboran? She’s diving into project management at Majors Management, juggling tasks solo while her bosses travel. “I’ve learned to prioritize, organize, and trust myself,” she says. The takeaway? Internships are tough to land, but worth it. We’ll have closing comments after this ---------------------- Break 4: Ingles Markets ---------------------- Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for August 13th   Publish Date:  August 13th    Commercial: From the BG AD GROUP Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Tuesday, August 13th and Happy 54th Birthday to MLB Player Mark Lemke. ***08.13.24 – BIRTHDAY – MARK LEMKE*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Two Special Elections Schedules OK'd by Elections Board Police say Rep. Seabaugh Refused Sobriety Tests Suspect's Record Revealed in Officer-Involved Shooting   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1:  Two Special Elections Schedules OK'd by Elections Board The Cobb Elections Board approved two potential schedules for special elections to fill the District 2 and District 4 seats on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. The exact schedule depends on whether a December runoff occurs for the November general elections. If no runoff is needed, primaries would be held on February 11, 2025, with the general election on April 29, 2025. If a December runoff does happen, primaries would move to March 18, 2025, and the general election to June 17, 2025. This decision follows a legal dispute over a home rule map that led to the cancellation of previous primaries and general elections for these seats. Commissioner Jerica Richardson's and Commissioner Monique Sheffield's terms end on December 31. STORY 2:    Police: Rep. Seabaugh Refused Sobriety Tests State Rep. Devan Seabaugh, R-Marietta, was arrested for DUI Thursday night after a crash involving a cyclist on Memorial Drive in Atlanta. Seabaugh, who refused sobriety and breath tests, denies being intoxicated, claiming he had only one beer hours earlier. A GSP report noted he exhibited signs of intoxication and was unsteady. The cyclist suffered minor injuries and was unsure if he was hit. Seabaugh, driving with three other passengers including fellow state reps, faces multiple charges. His case will be heard on September 4. Refusal to take sobriety tests may lead to a license suspension under Georgia's implied consent law. STORY 3:  Police Share Record of Suspect in Officer-Involved Shooting Nathain Jenkins, 32, of Valdosta, was shot and killed by Cobb police at a Smyrna Walgreens on Friday evening during an altercation. Jenkins, who was armed, had multiple outstanding warrants from Lowndes and Fulton counties. Authorities are investigating a possible link between Jenkins and a previous vehicle pursuit that occurred weeks earlier. Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer confirmed the officers involved have been placed on leave and expressed condolences. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case and is seeking witnesses.     We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: DRAKE – COBB INTERNATIONAL FAIR STORY 4:  Cobb Eyes $87.5 Million Payout to Cities for Services The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is set to vote on a new Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) agreement that would provide $87.5 million to six cities over the next decade. The agreement would start with the cities splitting $6.5 million in the first year, increasing by $500,000 annually. This comes after a dispute over reimbursement for essential services led to mediation between the county and cities. The agreement must be approved by the commission and all six city councils by October 31 to avoid state sanctions affecting grants and permits. STORY 5:  Man Indicted in Slaying of KSU Student Samuel El Harris, 21, has been indicted on murder charges by a Cobb County grand jury in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Alasia Franklin at Kennesaw State University on May 18. Harris faces charges including felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault. The shooting occurred after a dispute outside the Austin Residence Complex. Harris, Franklin's ex-boyfriend, is accused of hiding her cellphone and car after the crime. Franklin, a KSU student government senator, was remembered for her dedication and service. Harris remains in Cobb County Jail without bond. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: INGLES 7 STORY 6:   Bounce for Pounce Scores for Cat Rescue Efforts Pounce de Leon hosted its “Bounce for Pounce” tennis tournament at Lost Mountain Tennis Center on August 11, raising funds for their cat rescue group. Twenty-four players competed, with James Smith and Kim Keller emerging as top scorers, winning prizes organized by Lisa Gardner. Pounce de Leon rescues homeless and abandoned cats, working with Petco stores and 50 foster homes across Atlanta. Since its founding in 2023, the group has adopted 192 cats and provided trap-neuter-release services for 250 cats. The event, supported by Sprouts Farmers Market and Costco, contributes to addressing cat overpopulation in Georgia. STORY 7:     Motorcyclist Killed in Maxham Road Collision Alejandro Garcia-Zavala, 26, was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in Austell, Cobb Police report. Riding a 2016 Honda CBR 650 southbound on Maxham Road, Garcia-Zavala lost control near Pontiac Circle around 10:36 p.m., striking a curb and guardrail before being ejected into a creek. The motorcycle came to a stop in the median. Garcia-Zavala was pronounced dead at the scene. Cobb County Police are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.       Break: Marietta Theater – COBB INTERNATIONAL FAIR   Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. She has conducted communication seminars for major US corporations, foreign governments, and the US Peace Corps. Lowndes has appeared on hundreds of television and radio programs. She has authored ten bestselling books on communications. These books have been published in over 26 foreign languages Introduction How to Talk to Anyone is a psychology-backed book that offers guidance on effective communication. Lowndes covers a wide range of communication types, broken down into verbal and nonverbal, across almost every possible context. Your approach should adapt depending on whom you are talking to and the specific context. So, How to Talk to Anyone offers guidance on how you can become a master communicator. As a master communicator, you can connect with others irrespective of the environment. StoryShot #1: Use Your Smile and Your Eyes for First Impressions 80% of first impressions is the way you look and move. In fact, studies suggest that emotional reactions occur in our brains before we even have time to register a reaction to somebody. So, try to utilize Leil Lowndes' tips to intrigue everyone through your first impressions. Lowndes advises against quick smiles. If you interact with somebody, you should start by looking at their face for a second and pausing. This pause will let you soak in their persona. You should then let out a big warm smile that floods across your face. Allow this flood to overflow into smiling with your eyes. While engaging with the flooding smile, you should also try to maintain eye contact. Others will respect you more if you maintain strong eye contact. Specifically, this ability is associated with intelligence and abstract thinking. Lowndes' second technique builds on the importance of maintaining eye contact. She describes how you should adopt sticky eyes. This means you should not break eye contact even after they have finished speaking. Once you have decided to break eye contact, you should do so slowly and reluctantly. Lowndes believes this approach will send a message to others to comprehend their conversation and respect them as an individual. When you are seeking romance, you should utilize what Lowndes describes as epoxy eyes. If you are romantically interested in someone, maintain deep eye contact with them even when they are not the person talking. If they are interested in you, keeping eye contact while they are a listener can be an effective aphrodisiac. Owned by Jesse and Emily Cole, they are embarking on their fourth "World Tour". During their visit to Coolray Field, they will play three games on March 22, 23, and 24. Unlike the Harlem Globetrotters, the Bananas compete genuinely against the Party Animals, and outcomes are not scripted. Their unique "Banana Ball" format includes time limits, point-based scoring for innings, and various rules to keep the game fast-paced. Tickets for their Gwinnett County visit will be available through a lottery system, and fans can join the lottery list before December 1. These cameras will operate during designated times and enforce modified speed limits. The schools where these cameras are installed include Brookwood High, Meadowcreek High, Starling Elementary, North Gwinnett Middle, and Richards Middle. The primary goal is to improve road safety near these schools by encouraging drivers to adhere to the posted speed limits. For additional details about these cameras and their specific locations, residents can refer to the official website for more information.   STORY 3: Gwinnett runners shine at Great American XC Festival At the Great American XC Festival in Cary, N.C., Wesleyan's Wood Moore secured the 29th position in the Race of Champions with a 5K time of 15 minutes and 33 seconds.
