On Today's show Shannon welcomes Peter Prokop and Tommy Caamano, Co-Directors of Traveling the Spectrum a new TV series designed to help families with loved ones on the autism spectrum feel more confident about traveling. The show highlights real families as they embark on sensory-friendly vacations, breaking down barriers and proving that travel can be accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Statistics show that 87% of families with a loved one on the autism spectrum don't take vacations, but 93% say they would if there were more resources. Traveling the Spectrum helps fill that gap by showing what's possible. Visit: www.travelingthespectrumshow.com for more information. The jargon of the day is Systematic Desensitization.

Today I speak with Jen Stark and Jarrid Green, Co-Directors, of the Center for Business and Social Justice. We candidly discuss how DEI and other topics became flashpoints and ideological hostages rather than sustained corporate efforts, and how companies can break this cycle. We explore the questions executives and boards are asking, how companies can respond to activist shareholders and continue to promote fairness and equity while also fulfilling their responsibility to ensure strong financial performance - and why we're “beyond the business case” so we can adapt our narrative. Jen and Jarrid offer valuable advice on how everyone from the C-suite to DEIB and CSR professionals in the trenches can stay motivated and respond. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:You cannot be neutral anymore. Consumers want to know what their money will support and want to be value aligned.Be authentic with yourself - you need to understand why you are doing what you are doing.Lean into your smaller, individual communities. Mass media and social media information sharing is not enough. "We've left the era of case-making. There are enough data points, surveys, and white papers that if it is was just rational thought governing business decisions, you'd be in a different place." — Jen Stark Episode References: Kerner Report: pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/bombshell-political-reportThe Center's Social Justice Guidebook: bsr.org/en/focus/equity-inclusion-and-justiceHow to Survive a Plague by David France: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/209900/how-to-survive-a-plague-by-david-franceSuffs: The Musical: suffsmusical.comFrom Our Partner:SparkEffect partners with organizations to unlock the full potential of their greatest asset: their people. The joyous and jubilant documentary Sally! - the exclamation mark is deliberate - is a delightful and educational journey through the life and history of Sally Miller Gearhart: a professor of Speech, Theatre, and Women Studies; a fantasy writer; and most known as a lesbian feminist activist who helped transform the world for women and queer people alike. If, like me, you haven't truly heard the name Sally Gearhart before, then you might know of her activist work alongside Harvey Milk, notably from a pointed interview where Sally joined Harvey to debate John Briggs about his noxious and harmful bill dubbed Proposition 6, or the 'Briggs Initiative', which, if passed, would have seen homosexuals from academic positions in public schools. This debate with Briggs is one of the pivotal points in Sally's life, which also included her appearance in notable documentaries like WORD IS OUT: Stories of Some of Our Lives in 1977 and in Barbara Hammer's short film Superdyke. What delights the most about Sally!, the documentary, is that it meets the energy, vibrancy, and advocacy of Sally, the person, and acts as a celebration of activism, queer liberation, queer culture, feminism, and so much more. It is, quite simply, a rapturous delight to watch and spend time with. The film details Sally's life, featuring in depth interviews with those she knew, loved, campaigned with, and built a community alongside. It also features some joyously funny and engaging interviews with Sally herself, recorded in the years before her passing. Sally! is more than just a history lesson, it's a reminder that in a time of great societal upheaval and distress, one of the purest forms of resistance is laughter, community, and joy. They can't take that away from you.I was fortunate enough to talk with two of the co-directors of the film, Ondine Rarey and Jörg Fockele, while they were in Sydney for the Mardi Gras Queer Screen Film Festival screening of the film. Fellow co-director and producer Deborah Craig was unable to attend, but the sense of community and energy around the film and the following discussion carries her energy forward. This interview talks about how Deborah discovered Sally, and why telling Sally's story on screen right now is so deeply important. Ondine and Jörg also talk about the importance of being able to screen a film like Sally! in the world right now, and about the importance of keeping queer activist history alive and relevant. Sally! is a delight of a film, and you can see in person at the Mardi Gras Film Festival on Saturday 15 February. This is a special community screening, where all tickets are just $12. You won't want to miss it. However, if you're unable to attend the screening in person, then Sally! is also screening on demand later in the festival. This film was done so beautifully for such a hard subject matter to discuss. Play Date was a film that I am glad I got to watch for HollyShorts, but so glad I was able to interview Amberlee Colson and Laura Campbell to dive deeper into the film. According to their website (playdate-film.com), the short film is about two estranged mothers reunite to make sense of their daughter's last play date. I hope that you can check it out sometime and I hope this film reaches so many people. “Play Date is an attempt to comprehend not only the depth of loss incurred by the parents of school shooting victims, but also the mental contortions the rest of us have to perform in order to keep living in a world where a day at school or a night at the movies can mean the end of the world as we know it.” - Gavin Broady Writer's Statement Sazerac Dream Cocktail: Ingredients Absinthe, to rinse 1 sugar cube 1/2 teaspoon cold water 4 dashes Peychaud's bitters 2 1/2 ounces rye whiskey Garnish: lemon peel Directions Rinse a chilled rocks glass with absinthe, discarding any excess, and set aside. Strain into the prepared glass. Twist the lemon peel over the drink's surface to express the peel's oils, then garnish with the peel. Allow them to crisp up, but not fully brown, and place a slice of cheddar cheese on each un-buttered side of toast. Allow cheese to melt slightly and flip sandwiches together to make 3 separate grilled cheese sandwiches. Continue to flip the sandwiches until they form a nice golden crust. Slice each sandwich in quarters and stuff into a mason jar. Fill the mason jar entirely with vodka. Allow grilled cheese and vodka to infuse overnight. Fill an ice cube tray with tomato juice and stick into the the freezer overnight. Strain out the vodka by placing 2 coffee filters into a strainer. Pour the vodka through carefully, assuring the filters are straining out any lipids. You can also fish out the sandwiches and squeeze the liquid soaked up by the bread. Set vodka aside. On a griddle, crisp up the prosciutto and break into small bits and place on a small plate. On another plate, pour a layer of balsamic glaze. Rim your glass first with the balsamic glaze and then with the prosciutto bits. Set aside. In a shaker, muddle the basil and cherry tomatoes. Pour in 4 oz of the vodka and ice and shake vigorously. In the years since it launched, the league has grown to showcase the different styles of football that each corner of Australia has to offer. In Sal Balharrie and Danielle MacLean's essential documentary Like My Brother, we follow four AFLW hopefuls from the Tiwi Islands, Rina, Freda, Juliana and Jess, as they follow their dream to become league players. But, dreams aren't always meant to happen overnight, with the film following their journey away from their home in Tiwi to Victoria where they have to train and try out for consideration with the major teams. On this journey, we see the difficulties that the AFLW hopefuls face, especially those from communities like the Tiwi Islands where the same kind of opportunities that come easily for male players are simply not afforded to the women players. In the following interview with Sal and Danielle, the co-directors talk about their journey of bringing this story to life, what kind of change they want to see in the AFLW, and the importance of hearing stories that have rarely been told on screen.Like My Brother launches in Australian cinemas nationwide from today, 17 October 2024. A stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life, SUGARCANE, the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning. In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves was discovered on the grounds of an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada. After years of silence, the forced separation, assimilation and abuse many children experienced at these segregated boarding schools was brought to light, sparking a national outcry against a system designed to destroy Indigenous communities. Set amidst a groundbreaking investigation, SUGARCANE illuminates the beauty of a community breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma and finding the strength to persevere. Co-directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie join us for a conversation on how their focus on the subject changed during the filming of SUGARCANE, getting know the dedicated people like Whitney Spearing and Charlene Belleau who devoted themselves to uncovering the repugnant history of St. Joseph's Residential School, capturing the relationship between Julian and his father, Ed Archie NoiseCat and filming the disturbing meeting between the Rick Gilbert, Former First Nation Chief, and the Vatican's Superior General Louis Lougen. Through a mix of never-before-seen archival film, large format cinematic footage, and personal interviews from culture giants like Tony Hawk, Shepard Fairey, Selema Masekela and more; we are taken on a journey through surfing and skating history - from 1960s Newport to Santa Cruz, Cocoa Beach, South Africa's Jeffrey's Bay, and beyond. As Sid approaches the age of 72, the film captures the final days of his famous Water Brothers Surf & Skate shop as it is set to be demolished and the impact it had on the surf and skate community. WATER BROTHER emphasizes the importance of memory, personal history, and living in the moment, reminding us to cherish our past and preserve cultural heritage. The film is a poignant reflection on a life well-lived and a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit of surf culture. It celebrates the individuals and places that transcend surfing and skating from mere hobbies, showing how one man's dedication can inspire an entire community. Co-directors Charles Kinnane & Daniel Kinnane join us to talk about the impact that Sid, his family and Water Brothers Surf & Skate shop has had on them, what was it about the surf and skate lifestyle that inspired them to pick up a camera and tell this story, and the love for Sid that permeates Water Brother: The Sid Abruzzi Story. WAR GAME sweeps audiences into an elaborate future-set simulation that dramatically escalates the threat posed by the January 6, 2021 insurrection. The film follows a bipartisan group of US defense, intelligence, and elected policymakers spanning five presidential administrations as they participate in an unscripted role-play exercise. Portraying a fictional President of the United States and his advisors, they confront a political coup backed by rogue members of the US military in the wake of a contested 2024 presidential election. Like actors in a thriller, but with profound real-world stakes, the players have only six hours to save American democracy. Some of the participants included; WAR GAME co-directors Jesse Moss (Boys State, Girls State, The Overnighters) and Tony Gerber (Full Battle Rattle, Notorious Mr. Bout, Kingdom of the White Wolf, Jane) join us for a spirited conversation on how they came into this project, the importance of VET VOICE in making this possible, the very challenging logistics of capturing the intensity of the exercise and how seriously all the participants were in regard to playing their individual roles. DEVIL PUT THE COAL IN THE GROUND is a moving portrayal of resilience by the people of West Virginia that reveals – despite years of corporate greed and exploitation – how a deep love of family, community and tradition has carried them through it all. From the realities of a crumbling economy, to the ravages of the opioid epidemic, to the irreparable environmental damage and its tragic impact on human health – the film is a cautionary tale of unfettered corporate power, and an elegy to a vanishing Appalachia. Uniquely structured upon personal storytelling of West Virginians, the film draws upon their rich experiences and diverse perspectives in order to create an informal, oral “People's History of West Virginia”. These individuals run the gamut – from recovering opioid addict, to environmental activist, to U.S. Congressional candidate, to town judge, to recovery center nurse, to corporate environmental lawyer, to struggling local business owner – all of whom, despite their differences, remain linked by the love of their home state and the challenges that threaten their survival, and way of life. DEVIL PUT THE COAL IN THE GROUND features the iconic music of Steve Earle and Iris Dement, while blending intimate first-person storytelling with rare archival photography from DOCUMERICA luminary Jack Corn. Stunning aerial footage, bespoke animation, and an original score complete this heartfelt elegy to a vanishing Appalachia. Co-directors Lucas Sabean and Peter Hutchison stop by to talk about how this film started as an entirely different project and why the humanity and emotional rawness of the film's subjects made it clear that they deserved to have a film built around their stories. SORRY/NOT SORRY charts how an open secret about comedian Louis C.K.'s sexual misconduct evolved into a front page article on The New York Times. Following the story's publication, Louis C.K. admitted “these stories are true” and faced initial repercussions, only to return to the stage nine months later. While the story of C.K.'s rise and fall largely played out in public, this film reveals the stories of three women who spoke out over the years about C.K.'s behavior. Through candor and surprising humor, the documentary gives voice to the nuanced and complicated experiences of Jen Kirkman, Abby Schachner, and Megan Koester. It presents new details about their encounters with Louis C.K. and unveils the extent of the personal and professional consequences they faced for speaking out about it. SORRY / NOT SORRY directors Caroline Suh and Cara Mones shed new light on questions about sex and power in the workplace, who gets to take the stage, and the role the public plays in these stories at large. Featuring interviews with the reporters who broke the original story – Melena Ryzik, Cara Buckley, and Jodi Kantor – along with comedians, gatekeepers and critics including Michael Ian Black, Michael Schur, Aida Rodriguez, Andy Kindler, Noam Dworman, and Wesley Morris, the film leaves viewers contemplating: who is afforded a second chance, and who is overlooked in the process? Filmmakers Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland feature length, speculative documentary, LYD follows the rise and fall of a 5,000-year-old metropolis, Lyd. It was once a bustling Palestinian town until it was conquered when the State of Israel was established in 1948. As the film unfolds, a chorus of characters creates a tapestry of the Palestinian experience of this city and the trauma left by the massacre and expulsion, while vivid animations envision an alternate reality where the same characters live free from the trauma of the past and the violence of the present. Using never-before-seen archival footage of the Israeli soldiers who carried out the massacre and expulsion, the personified city explains that these events were so devastating that they fractured reality, and now there are two Lyds — one occupied and one free. As the film cuts between fantastical and documentary realities, it ultimately leaves the viewer questioning which future should prevail. Lyd dares to ask the question: what would the city be like had the Israeli occupation of Lyd never happened? Co-directors Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland join us for a wide ranging conversation on the utterly fascinating and pivotal role that the city of Lyd has played in the multiple empires, ancient and modern, the establishment of the state of Israel, the forced expulsion of Palestinians during Nakba and the provocative question at the heart of the film… What if? The celebrated filmmaker duo of Bill Ross and Turner Ross (Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets & Contemporary Color, 45365) turn their pioneering hybrid approach to the cinematic road trip that is GASOLINE RAINBOW. This raw and deeply affecting film is an expansive portrait of the new generation as told in their own words. With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from inland Oregon embark on one last adventure together. Piling into a van with a busted tail light, they head out for a place they've never been -- the Pacific coast, five hundred miles away. The plan, in full: "Fuck it." Through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets, they connect with outsiders on the fringes and discover their lives will be determined by the trails they blaze themselves. These are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future -- and The Party at the End of the World. A SXSW and Venice Film Festival selection, GASOLINE RAINBOW depicts a wild and true coming-of-age. With a beating heart and an irrepressible spirit, this rhapsodic look at today's American West reminds us of the timeless joys of community. We are joined by the co-directors Turner Ross and Bill Ross to talk about the immensely challenging logistics of the shoot, working with a young cast of actors, and embracing the chaos and opportunities that made Gasoline Rainbow the remarkable cinematic experience that we see on screen.
