Episode 305. They should've sent a poet... instead they got podcasters. We connect with Contact, the 1997 sci-fi drama from director Robert Zemekis, based on a novel from Carl Sagan. Dr. Ellie Arroway has spent her life listening to the stars, and the stars finally have a message for her. Humanity scrambles to decode an alien transmission and determine what to do with this new knowledge, and what it means for their very concept of facts vs. faith. We discuss the story's approachable and universal take on "lowercase f" faith, the eccentric billionaire who lives in a plane, that legendary mirror shot, and the rare sci-fi story that's comforting more than it is cautionary.Click here to watch a video of this episode. Kevin Costner's epic Horizon is trending to be a tremendous flop according to predictions of this weekend's opener. Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are teaming up with Robert Zemekis to do a totally different kind of film (sorry no Gump sequel because Jenny is dead). Since we're in Philly this week to perform with Well There's Your Problem, enjoy this classic episode from December 2019 with Roz! Have you ever asked yourself what weird 1980s Hollywood live-action/cartoon crossover films have to say about the infamous General Motors Streetcar Scandal of the mid-20th century? Well do we have a film for you!Sean sits down with fellow socialist railfan Justin Roczniak, AKA donoteat1, to get at the real and sordid history behind Robert Zemekis' 1988 blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit? How the hell was this crazy film made? What does it tell us about the history of public transit in Los Angeles and elsewhere? Why is Elon Musk full of shit? How would rail fit into the Green New Deal and socialism broadly? Most importantly, how did our fans get us to watch hentai?support the show at patreon.com/theantifada
[School of Movies 2023] The concluding second part of this detailed puppet exploration. We finally reach Guillermo del Toro's exceptional antifascist version of the story wherein things might not be so cut and dried as "Do everything you're told by adults". We also get to bring in discussions of all the other movies we watched along the way, in order to get a better handle on the screen life of this Italian legend. Some of them are lost, hidden gems just waiting to be rediscovered, some of which you should avoid like bubonic plague. You'll also hear about a version from Victoria that even WE didn't know about, in the most surprising of mediums. Guest: Victoria Luna B. Grieve: @VixenVVitch The complete Pinocchiae 1. 1940 (Disney Classic, directed by Ben Sharpsteen & Hamilton Luske) 2. 1996 (Adventures, directed by Steve Barron) 3. 2002 (Creepy Manchild, directed by Roberto Begnigni) 4. 2012 (Italian Animated, directed by Enzo D'Alo) 5. 2019 (Italian Live Action, directed by Matteo Garrone) 6. 2021 (Russian "True Story", directed by Vasiliy Rovenskiy) 7. 2022 (Disney Remake, directed by Robert Zemekis) 8. 2022 (Netflix Stop-Motion, directed by Guillermo del Toro)
[School of Movies 2023] It seems like 2022 was the year of the little wooden boy, with THREE new Pinocchio movies released. There was the Robert Zemekis-helmed live action remake of the Disney classic, Guillermo del Toro's darker, fascist-challenging Netflix stop motion film, and there was the Pauly Shore dub of the Russian one that gained memetic notoriety. So Sharon and I went back and didn't only just watch those three... we pretty much watched every significant Pinocchio movie ever made. And then we brought in Victoria Luna B. Grieve to talk about their different approaches. In this first of two shows we revisit the 2014 recording of Daniel Floyd talking with us about the 1940 original for our Disney Animated Series. Then with Victoria we look at why so many people angrily *loathed* the new Disney incarnation. Next week, Del Toro, Shore, Benigni, Martin Landau, Udo Kier, Napoleon Dynamite, weird noises, strange perverts and the best animated version you've never heard of. Guests: Daniel Floyd of New Frame Plus Victoria Luna B. Grieve: @VixenVVitch

[School of Movies 2023] This is our second attempt at a film that might mean *everything*. We had a go at recording on this 1997 Robert Zemekis sci-fi about attempting to decode alien messages all the way back in 2014. The discussion broke down soon after that opening section which crams a whole universe into our minds. Fortunately for us and you, this became a commissioned show (Many thanks to Executive Producer Matthew A. Seibert) which means we can't set it down or put it off any more. Jodie Foster puts in an astonishing performance as a woman in the grip of lifelong obsession, searching for answers. When her SETI team at the Very Large Array of radio telescope dishes in New Mexico get a long-distance message the entirety of Planet Earth is thrown into a chaotic conflict to establish meaning. Religion and science are put in opposition of one another, with explosive results. Astrophysicist Carl Sagan began conceptualising what would happen to the human race if it came into contact with intelligent life back in the late 70s, which precipitated an eighteen-year production limbo that he would not live to see the end of. Fortunately, Zemekis' film maintained the spirit of what Carl was reaching for.
[School of Movies 2022] This is a movie we covered already, back in the winter of 2011. But back then I was really just getting warmed up, and it was a comparative show with the Robert Zemekis version from 2009. But huge thanks to my guests back then who always bring the insight; Taylor Nova and Matt Ramsey. This time we delve deep into both the Dickens book and why the Henson version hits all the notes exactly right, as well as the recent and long-awaited restoration of the 1992 film (with the missing song performed by Meredith Braun now back in place) on its thirtieth anniversary. And accompanying us this time are a pair of veritable Muppet experts who run their own dedicated podcast on these ageless furry anarchist entertainers! Settle in for a genuinely epic journey through one of the greatest Yuletides stories ever told, being retold in perhaps the greatest way possible. [School of Movies 2022] The Summer Commissions Season continues with an unexpected highlight. Here we have a brace of films focusing on the same real life event: Man on Wire (2008) and The Walk (2015). The former is a documentary about Philippe Petit the man who walked on a wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The latter is the Robert Zemekis dramatization of that fairly astonishing heist. We recommend you see one or both of them, because they're fantastic in different ways. The year was 1974, the towers were in the process of being built in Manhattan, and thousands of miles away a French street performer was cultivating a deep longing to traverse the tallest wire in the world. One tiny mistake, one miscalculation and he would plummet to a very public death. But first he had to get up there, and for that he and his cronies were going to need to pull off one of the most extraordinary real life heists of all time.
[School of Movies 2022] Our summer commissions season continues. It's surprising that this show has been going as long as it has only covering a handful of Pixar movies. So this one will be welcome to many listeners. Putting the original 2004 film in perspective, it was incredibly important as a touchstone for what became the age of superhero blockbusters. It has so many significant elements that Marvel applied to their works (appropriate since this is to date, the best Fantastic Four movie!) So, fourteen years later the sequel takes place fourteen seconds after the first while we've all gotten a lot older. Next week two films focusing on the same real life event: Man on Wire (2008) and The Walk (2015). The former is a documentary about the man who walked on a wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the latter is the Robert Zemekis dramatization of that fairly astonishing heist. We recommend both.

Today we get to share with you a very special conversation with a true legend - the one and only Don Hahn. Don is largely known as the longtime producer of some of the greatest animated films of the past 50 years spanning from his start at the Walt Disney studios in the 70's to the resurgence of the public's love for animation with films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and much more. Don's love of Walt Disney the man himself as well as the studio is evident in not only the films he's helped lead, but also the books he's written and the documentaries he's directed. Pound for pound, I'd put Don at the top of the list for most interesting person at Disney's studio since Walt left the stage back in the 1960's. His perspectives as a leader working with some of the most talented creatives in Hollywood - we're talking Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg, Howard Ashman, Richard Williams, Robert Zemekis and others - has made this conversation a tough one to pack into a one hour episode. But, luckily, we got it done and I can't tell you enough how great a conversation it was. So, do yourself a favor, grab yourself a drink, sit back back relax and enjoy my chat with Don. The Pencil Pushers Podcast is a celebration of the hand-drawn arts. I'll be interviewing friends and idols in illustration, animation, comic-art, and more. - Mike Rosado Post production and editing by Trujillo Media Additional music provided by Epidemic Sound

In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guests Jim Bevan and James "Jaimetud" Sullivan discuss about the 2020 film Roald Dahl's The Witches, which is based on the 1982 book The Witches written by Robert Zemekis, Guillermo del Toro, and Kenya Barris and directed by Zemekis. It stars Jahzir Kadeem Bruno, Octavia Spencer, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Codie-Lei Eastick, Kristen Chenoweth, and Chris Rock. The film takes place in Demopolis, Alabama in 1968 where a young boy had lost his parents in a car accident and is sent to live with his grandmother. A witch approaches him at the local corner store and they relocate at a grand hotel to hide from them not knowing that a witch convention is being held there. The boy turns into a mouse and meets with a boy named Bruno who also got turned into a mouse and the boy's pet mouse named Mary who went through a similar fate. It's up to them to stop the witches from turning all the children into mice. Can they defeat them? Will they be able to turn back into human? The movie was originally suppose to air in theaters, but due to COVID-19, it was released on HBO Max. It's currently the lowest graded Roald Dahl adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes at 49% with critics stating that the film was nowhere near as frightening or engaging compared to the 1990 version. How do they feel about it? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

The Witches, starring Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway, is streaming on HBO Max. It's an adaptation of the 1983 Roald Dahl book about a kid and his grandmother who get caught up in the dastardly plans of a group of child-hating witches at a seaside hotel. The book's action takes place in Britain, but director and co-writer Robert Zemekis has changed the setting to 1960s Alabama, and made the kid and his grandmother Black.

Have you ever asked yourself what weird 1980s Hollywood live-action/cartoon crossover films have to say about the infamous General Motors Streetcar Scandal of the mid-20th century? Well do we have a film for you! Sean sits down with fellow socialist railfan Justin Roczniak, AKA donoteat1, to get at the real and sordid history behind Robert Zemekis' 1988 blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit? How the hell was this crazy film made? What does it tell us about the history of public transit in Los Angeles and elsewhere? Why is Elon Musk full of shit? How would rail fit into the Green New Deal and socialism broadly? Most importantly, how did our fans get us to watch hentai?
DM and Vinnie look at some of the films that scared them as children and remember to this day. This time we're looking at Disney's Return to Oz and Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Grant Kirkpatrick is one of those architects that is actively shaping the way we view Los Angeles. He, through his firm KAA both creates and re-imagines places and spaces. The firm’s mission states a devotion to warm, contemporary design. Providing solutions for modern living and at the same time, he has a love and a sense of duty to protect the structures that Southern California offers the world. Grant and I sat down at the Vondom showroom during West Week at the Pacific Design Center to talk about Southern California architecture, his Marina Del Rey offices that have already lived lives as the original Hobie Catamaran Factory and a warehouse for all of the props and set decor from Cast Away. **Side note, can you believe that Cast Away was released in the year 2,000? In the following conversation, Grant tells me about the fact that his current offices served as the prop house if you will during filming and I thought it would be fun to reintroduce you to a past guest on Convo By Design from the 2016 WestEdge Design Fair, Rosemary Brandenburg. Brandenburg was the Set Decorator on Cast Away, a Robert Zemekis film starring Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Peter Von Berg and of course Wilson, the volleyball. It’s one of those Southern California stories that ties architecture and film making, seamlessly. Back to Grant. Kirkpatrick has published a new book called California Contemporary: The Houses of Grant C. Kirkpatrick. This covers 30 years of architectural mastery in Southern California. These homes possess elements that have come to embody the California lifestyle. Architects from around the world try to emulate elements of the modern style and use of materials, not to mention the seamless flow between indoors and out. Kirkpatrick, as you might imagine, has a solid roster of celerities for whom he has designed home, including; Matt Damon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and of course, of course, Tom Hanks. So the circle is complete. This is KAA Design’s Grant Kirkpatrick. And after Grant, Set Decorator of America member, Rosemary Brandenburg.
