How does May think about and assess operational survival in times of such uncertainty? Why does this downturn feel so different to prior downturns? Operationally, what needs to fundamentally change about your processes? How does May think about when is the right time to engage with pre-emptive burn cuts? Where do many go wrong here?        May’s 60 Second SaaStr: What is the most challenging element of May’s role with Qordoba today? Barring an act of God, Boris Johnson is going to be the next leader of the Conservative Party. We're exploring what that means in two parts. Today, Helen and David talk about the domestic implications. Can Johnson avoid an election? Can he hold on to the seats he needs while winning others he doesn't have? Will he unite or divide his party? Will Labour be able to stop him either way? Plus we talk about what's at stake for the Tories in Johnson's relationship with Trump. Next week: Europe and Brexit.Talking Points:What shifted to make Boris Johnson’s victory almost inevitable? We need to go back to the third attempt to get the meaningful vote through the House of Commons. That was Theresa May’s chance. After 31 March, the political calculus changed. If May had been able to pass her deal, there might have been more of an effort to stop Johnson from becoming PM.Labour is now the more divided party. And the Conservative Party has united around a very unpopular leader. There are some parallels to the United States. The Labour remainers have been emboldened since the 31 March, but Labour also looks more divided than it did a few months ago.Are there enough people in the parliamentary Conservative Party who would be willing to precipitate a general election if Johnson pursued no deal? It’s not impossible, but this would be a big deal.Could Johnson usher in a new relationship with the United States?A lot would ride on his relationship with Trump—that’s risky. Is there anything that Johnson can say that will not alienate Trump and not alienate the British public? The most important decision next week, if Johnson becomes PM, will be who he appoints as Chancellor. Whoever it is will likely have a lot of power. What happens with Brexit will be crucial to what kind of economic policy comes next. The Conservatives will need to maintain their coalition, and probably make up for seats in Scotland. Will the opposition to a Johnson prime ministership coalesce around Labour or not?Last time, the Conservatives committed an act of destruction with the social care issue. And if the next general election happens after Brexit, there will not be the same disciplining effect. If Johnson can walk a very narrow path in the next 6 months (which is far from certain), he could be prime minister for a long time. Vincent McAviney: What next for Brexit after EU extension?

Following the decision early Thursday by the European Union to delay the U.K.'s departure for a second time, not much is clear about Brexit bar the certainty that the divisions in British society and in Parliament will remain. The so-called "flextension" until Oct. 31 given to Britain to approve a Brexit withdrawal agreement will require the country to hold elections for the European Parliament on May 23 — provided the withdrawal agreement hasn't been passed by lawmakers.Few think that's going to be likely after Prime Minister Theresa May saw the deal she agreed with the EU voted down by lawmakers on three occasions this year. The extension at least provides more time for May to break the logjam, though it could easily just prolong the national agony. European Council President Donald Tusk acknowledged as much when he delivered a message to Britain: "Please do not waste this time."A look at what could happen next:MAY'S MARKETING CAMPAIGNFor two years, May pledged that Britain would leave the EU on March 29, 2019. But this is the second time she has been forced to agree to a delay. The prime minister addressed the House of Commons Thursday afternoon and urged members to use the upcoming Easter break to "reflect on the decisions that will have to be made" in search of compromise. She said that if talks with Labour do not lead to a plan both sides could back, then the government would ask Parliament to vote on a small number of options. She said the government would agree to accept the decisions and that the opposition would have to agree to that as well.May stressed that Britain can still leave the EU without taking part in the European Parliament elections if lawmakers approve her deal by May 22.May has in recent months failed to sway many hard-line Brexiteers in her party partly because of deep opposition to provision in the withdrawal agreement about making sure the border between EU member Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, remains seamless. It remains to be seen whether her pleas win anyone over. Many of them find the prospect of Britain participating in the European elections unpalatable, given that it will be almost three years since Britain voted to leave the EU.CROSS-PARTY COMPROMISEHaving failed to win enough support from her own Conservative Party, May last week began negotiations with the opposition Labour Party.Labour favors a softer Brexit than the government's plan and is seeking a close economic relationship with the bloc through a customs union. That's anathema to many Conservatives, who say it would prevent Britain from striking its own trade deals with countries like the United States, China and India.Several days of talks have failed to produce a breakthrough. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says the government hasn't been willing to compromise on its "red lines."Still, the negotiations are set to continue.LET PARLIAMENT DECIDEIf the talks fail, May says she will let Parliament vote on a variety of Brexit alternatives, including the government's proposed deal, in hope something can command a majority.A so-called "soft Brexit" might get through Parliament and would be welcomed by the EU, allowing Britain an orderly departure before Oct. 31.But it could also blast open rifts within both the Conservative and Labour parties. Pro-Brexit government ministers could resign, increasing pressure on May to quit. The prime minister has already said she will resign if her Brexit deal is approved and Britain leaves the EU, but rivals are circling.Corbyn, meanwhile, would face rebellion from the large number of Labour lawmakers who want a new referendum on Britain's departure from the EU.NEW PRIME MINISTERThe pressure on May is increasing, with hard-line Brexit supporters criticizing the prime minister for twice begging the EU to delay Britain's departure and many mainstream Conservatives suggesting she has failed to build consensus. If May were to resign, the Conserva...

On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Walter Smolarek (sitting in for Brian Becker) and John Kiriakou are joined by Jacqueline Luqman, the co-editor-in-chief of Luqman Nation, which livestreams every Thursday night at 9:00 p.m. on Facebook.Friday is Loud & Clear’s weekly hour-long segment The Week in Review, about the week in politics, policy, and international affairs. Today they focus on the presidential race in 2020 and the Democratic primary, the president weighing in on the Golan region of Syria, and the floods in Southeastern Africa as a result of Cyclone Idai. President Trump yesterday announced that the US would recognize Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, reversing 52 years of US policy and infuriating friends and foes alike in the Middle East. Israel has occupied the Syrian territory since the 1967 war. Ariel Gold, a peace activist and the national co-director of Code Pink, joins the show. Brazil’s former president, Michel Temer, was arrested yesterday in Sao Paulo and charged with multiple crimes in a massive corruption scandal. His former Mining and Energy Minister also was arrested. Brazilian media say that the US Justice Department is helping Brazilian authorities with the case, which has been dubbed Operation Carwash. It is reportedly the largest corruption and money laundering case in Brazil’s history. Walter and John speak with Aline Piva, a journalist and a member of Brazilians for Democracy and Social Justice. European Union leaders yesterday agreed to a short extension of the deadline for Britain’s withdrawal from the EU to give Prime Minister Theresa May and the British parliament more time to pass legislation. If May can persuade parliament to approve that legislation next week, the official Brexit date will be May 22. Co-host Brian Becker, who is in Brussels for the European Union summit, joins the show. North Korea is withdrawing from a joint liaison office near the demilitarized zone with South Korea because the US last week put sanctions on two Chinese firms that had done business with North Korea. The North said in a statement that Pyongyang does not mind if the South Koreans continue to man the office. But North Korean officials have been withdrawn. Simone Chun, a fellow at the Korea Policy Institute and a member of the Korean Peace Network, joins Walter and John. It’s Friday! So it’s time for the week’s worst and most misleading headlines. Walter and John speak with Steve Patt, an independent journalist whose critiques of the mainstream media have been a feature of his site Left I on the News and on twitter @leftiblog, and Sputnik producer Nicole Roussell.

State Rep. Karla May joins Politically Speaking to talk about her ouster of Sen. Jake Hummel in Missouri’s 4th District. May is a four-term Democratic lawmaker who represents a portion of western St. Louis in the Missouri House. Her dominating victory over Hummel was arguably the biggest statehouse surprise in the Aug. 7 primary. If May wins in November, she will represent St. Louis with Sen. Jamilah Nasheed. It would mark the first time that two African-American women have represented the city in the Missouri Senate.
