Many Irish Americans were refugees. Hear how an Irish band is giving back to help refugees displaced from their native lands. How a little eavesdropping on a conversation led to a fun pub song and a round of beer for the band. Celebrate Star Wars Day with fun Jedi drinking songs. Welcome to Pub Songs & Stories. This is a Virtual Public House for musicians to share the stories and inspiration behind their music. My name is Marc Gunn, The Celtfather. I am your guide. Today’s show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Subscribe to the podcast and download free music when you sign up at PubSong.com. TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONSEvery year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. We’re going to Scotland in 2022. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 0:31 - “Lily the Pink” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 4:09 - WELCOME -- One of the reasons I picked this song is because I’ve had a lot of requests for it over the past few years because of its popularity with the Brobdingnagian Bards. Now of course, Andrew McKee, my partner with the Bards sang the song. One of the other reasons why I picked this song was in case the Virtual Public House CD, volume 2 was a go. But first we gotta get to the Virtual Public House, maybe volume 1. -- The Celtfather Story… Last year, I hired my audio editor to edit this podcast. I already had Mitchell editing the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. That’s been going for a while. But the Pub Songs Podcast has always had a lot more talking. And because there’s more talking, that also means there’s more editing to be done. Which means it’s more expensive to produce. I was trying to think of a way to either cut expenses or bring in more money when I realized in every show, I sing 2-3 songs. I should do something with them. And maybe if I publish an album, it will earn enough to fund the shows for each Quarter of the year. So that’s what I did. Virtual Public House is the name of my brand new album. You’ll get 23 tracks. All of the songs were recorded and performed during the first three months episodes of 2021 on Pub Songs & Stories. Every time you buy one of these CDs, it will help fund the show. If all goes well, I should have a new album to release each quarter highlighting songs from the previous quarter. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s see what you think of THIS album. You can buy it in my store at MageRecords.com. If you are a member of the Gunn Runners Club, then you can even use your discount code to save on CD purchases. I thought about releasing this album on Vinyl. But unfortunately, it is far too long for that. And why do even bother mentioning vinyl? Well, on May 6, you will be able to buy As Long As I’m Flyin on vinyl. Yes. I am talking about a record. Like if you were talking about a record player. That’s exactly what I just did. I noticed my CD producer, Kunaki, now allows artists to sell vinyl records. I got all excited and decided to release my newest album. Then I realized, it’s been a while since I released a full production album. Anyway, you can find that in my Mage Record store. -- If you are not yet subscribed to the podcast, do so in your favorite podcatcher. You can find links to subscribe on our website at PubSong.com. I’d also love it if you would Post a review in Apple Podcasts. How does this show make you feel? I’d love your feedback. 8:34 -  Laughing Jack Story: How a little eavesdropping on a conversation led to a fun pub song and a round of beer for the band. 11:45 - “I’m Not Irish” by Laughing Jack from Live at the Indy Folk Series 15:07 - Will and Jake Thorne Story: They share how Irish Americans were refugees and how they're giving back to help the millions of world-wide refugees currently displaced from their native lands. 17:28 - “Where the Wild Shamrocks Grow” by Turf Fire Liars from Long Memories Short Fuses 21:56 – Marc Gunn Story: What is Star Wars Day? Star Wars is on May 4. It celebrates George Lucas's Star Wars media franchise. The date was chosen for the pun on the catchphrase "May the Force be with you" as "May the Fourth be with you". Even though the holiday was not created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday. You find the full history of Star Wars Day on Wikipedia. 23:05 - “Jedi Drinking Song” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. Greetings Gunn Runner April was a pretty good month for me overall. Looking back, I feel like I was fairly productive. But I'm not sure about May yet... Let’s try and unpack it... on show #262. 0:26 - PODCASTS The Pub Songs Podcast is going strong with two episodes in April, as planned. One based around my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CD and the other Celtic Music for Arbor Day. Both were streamed live. And I feel like both will be good evergreen podcasts for the future. I'm trying to share old content that is just as relevant today. That's what evergreen podcasts means. I've been doing it with podcasts and videos. And I feel like it helps. I have created SO MUCH stuff over the years. It's crazy that I'm not resharing it. And so I am... Stories from the Road is also back strong. I wrote down some notes to remind me what I can share there. And I have a lot of options. So I'm being pretty consistent with new stuff. Plus, I wrote a couple new songs in April. The quarantine has been good for that at least. I got ahead on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Let's see if I can stay ahead of it. I released five episodes in April, including two two-hour long episodes. I decided to put out a bonus episode because of all the people staying at home. It stressed me out a bit. But I got through it. Check out the two-hour instrumental show especially. The song I wrote for the In the ‘Verse podcast is a new favorite. It's called "Bright Side of Everything". And even with the dark twist ending, I feel like it's a very positive upbeat song for this stay-at-home time of the pandemic. 3:24 - VIDEOS I released a couple of travel videos at the end of March and one in April. The first two were from some weekend travel in Northern Georgia. We visited some parks before they were shut down. I was able to capture some video of the trip. I'm learning a lot about video making from these excursions. In April, I released another video from our visit to Ballincollig Castle outside of Cork from the 2019 Celtic Invasion of Ireland. I'm pushing myself to edit more of these videos. I like how that one came out. I also started recording Stories from the Road to promote those videos. Coffee with the Celtfather is still going. Live streaming is definitely the thing right now. So I'm not giving up on them. I'm also running a test. I created a Facebook event page and added a ticket link a few weeks back. And that event showed up on a live stream before my show started. That was amazing and potentially life changing... except, I've been unable to duplicate it. I'm not sure why. So more tests will come. But again, at some point, I might step back from the regularly scheduled coffee show. 5:55 - MERCH I finally created a whole bunch of new Celtic Heartstring necklaces... and no one has bought them. LOL. That's okay. I have plans to do a big promo for them soon. I am looking at other merch ideas. Someone suggested Celtfather masks. There are companies creating those. But I'm not sure I want to commit to buying a whole bunch. I realized Selcouth won't be released until 2021. And I have a couple other projects. But I have no CDs planned. So I'm debating making short run, just me and the autoharp, CD release performing songs. I'm not sure. I think about the last album I did like this--St Patrick's Day Songs for Kids. On the one hand, the physical CD doesn't sell well. Except during St Patrick's Day, of course. But I thought it was a fun album... I feel like this could be a good way to supplement my income when I finally have shows or even before then. I'm not sure though. I'd love your thoughts. 8:37 - TRAVEL The Celtic Invasion of Italy was officially canceled. On the bright side, I only had four people signed up. But I was REALLY looking forward to that trip. Oh well... At some point, I'll start working on the itinerary for the 2021 Celtic Invasion of Scotland. I did update that website a little. I removed all of the Google Ad links. 9:43 - WEBSITES I'm staying on top of my lyrics for both the Irish Song Lyrics website as well as on my website. Greetings Gunn Runner What a crazy March! Covid19 took over the world. St Patrick’s Day disappeared, along with most musician gigs. But my Kickstarter for Selcouth was a huge success. Let’s try and unpack it... on show #260. 0:28 - PODCASTS The Pub Songs Podcast is my new favorite thing. It accomplishes many of the goals that got me started podcasting in the first place. I wanted a fun, engaging, and interactive way to promote my music and news. The challenge was that podcasting is typically not intuitively interactive. But over the past month, it's become so. I finally figured out how to get responses from the Pub Chat by using the Celtic Geek Facebook group. I also added a live streaming element.  That means the show now broadcasts on YouTube too! And it's more than just an audio podcast on a video platform. Now the only struggle is do I keep it bi-monthly or should I go weekly? And if the later, COULD I go weekly without adding as much additional work as I'm trying to avoid? I'll try 'n let you know what I decide. The virus has made some of things more difficult at home. I’m running Daddy Daycare right now. It’s pretty much sidelined most of what I do. I feel like Stories from the Road is one such sidelined podcast. Tho admittedly, I have a couple episodes I recorded. Just need to upload them.  So I guess I’m not too bad at keeping the show coming. But I feel bad inattentive nonetheless. I have trouble focusing as is. This isn't helping. I'm happy to say I am on top of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. And now that the holiday is over, I find myself getting back ahead of releasing episodes. I'm actually starting to plan them weeks ahead. I just need to pick songs. But the themes. Those are coming along brilliantly. It also helps that I can a bonus week in April. I'm taking the 9th off so that I can get ahead on OTHER shows... maybe even recording... We'll see... Mikey Mason and I recorded an episode of In the ‘Verse right before the Coronavirus became a national issue. It was also right around the beginning of March. So I never wrote my song. I started one. But it just wasn't good... And right now, I feel disheartened like I don't have time to write music. That's frustrating. 3:39 - VIDEOS My live streaming videos are about to go off the deep end. Coffee with the Celtfather is in its final season. Well, it's the end, in so far as I'm gonna stick with an exact time on an exact day. I love doing these shows. But they aren't growing and they take up most of my Wednesday work time. So does this mean I'm abandoning them? Nope. I'm just gonna change it up. My plan is to turn Facebook into a full on busking experience. Meaning I'll pop in now and then. The show will be focused on tips, nothing else. I might even try to fund raise a busking show... meaning--when I hit a certain financial goal, I will go live. Or something like that... It'll be on days when I feel like I can spare the time. I do still plan on going live at least once a week... but it's gonna be a bit more random. As I said earlier, I started to live stream the Pub Songs Podcast on YouTube. I love this. I will try to notify folks in the Celtic Geek community when I'm about to go live. That is also the place to get your thoughts added to the Pub Chat. While I record the show live, I don't do much interaction with viewers. But that too will change with the next show. The main part of the show will be the recorded podcast. But there will be bonus songs, again fund raised by viewers after the regular show ends. So that's another reason to watch if you're able. As for pre-recorded videos, I'm slowly dolling some of those out as well. Not nearly as many as I planned. I just checked. I'm still doing pretty well with my 2020 goals. W00t! 6:48 - MERCH My free CD offer is still going strong. I don't have nearly as many people taking advantage of it. But I'm happy to say it's still financially worthwhile doing. So SCORE! Oh! And if you didn't get the free album from the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, follow the link. The Kickstarter for Selcouth was a rousing success. Over $8800 was raised. That's my second highest Kickstarter. The highest as a soloist. Interestingly, you'd think... or maybe not you, but I would think I made a KILLER profit on sales. But I actually didn't. I still did well in terms of pre-sales. But I don't think the take home pay will be more than a thousand dollars. I find that fascinating to realize... That said, I will get new merch, CDs, and I get to hire musicians in need. So that's a big bonus. Check out The Doubleclicks' latest Kickstarter. 9:07 - TRAVEL What's the status of the Celtic Invasion of Italy? I wish I knew. I plan to make a decision by mid-April if I'm gonna be able to keep it running or not. It's not looking good. So maybe we will reschedule... or maybe not... 9:50 - WEBSITES The Irish Song Lyrics website has once again come into its own. I've updated a couple dozen song lyrics over the past month. You can now play many of my most-popular songs as well as a bunch of traditional Irish and Scottish songs. But if there's one that's missing, please let me know. I'll get it added asap. It's a pretty sweet site. Next I need to start making videos teaching folks to sing and play along. 10:58 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR APRIL My full schedule is empty, like most musicians. I have a couple of local gigs and some official internet concerts planned though. Michael welcomes Jack Bouroudjian, legendary trader and economist from UCX in Chicago. When Jack was last with us, it was just before the market bottomed. He told us what the markets needed to turn at Christmas, and he was spot on. He shares what he's looking for next -- and it's something every investor needs to hear. The Speaker says the President isn't worth impeaching; Dan Mahaffee says the Democrats are opting for guerrilla warfare instead of trench warfare. Brexit is back at the top of the headlines, and PM May was walloped in Parliament again. It's yet another impasse for Parliament and there are no easy or obvious solutions. Les Munson adds that the dreams of an independent UK are, ironically, dying on an Irish border. For the third segment, the conversation shifts to China -- and special guest Lester Munson. Does President Xi need a deal more than President Trump? Whether the tariffs have had an impact on the Chinese or not is unclear, and perhaps unimportant. The details of any deal matter, but the details of how to get there might not be.

Britain's PM Theresa May's Brexit deal, the product of two years of tortuous negotiations in Brussels, was overwhelmingly rejected this evening by the House of Commons, 432 votes to 202. May is now in a race against time to revamp and resuscitate her deal before Britain's scheduled departure from the EU on March 29. Mrs. May has until Monday to say how she intends to proceed and announced immediate talks with senior MPs from all parties to try to identify “genuinely negotiable” changes to the deal that could win the backing of the Commons. What does this mean for Brexit and the EU going forward? If Brits voted to leave the EU, what is PM May trying to salvage? The Senate confirmation hearing for US attorney general nominee William Barr got underway today. President Donald Trump tapped Barr to replace fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Barr was attorney general during the administration of President George H.W. Bush. What did we learn from today's hearing? The Israel-Palestine issue is often described as one of the most intractable conflicts in the world. With the occupation now in its 52nd year, a solution remains elusive. A key factor in prolonging the conflict has been the United States' unconditional support for successive Israeli governments, which has helped entrench Israel's illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories. This support is shaped by headlines. Headlines matter. As studies have repeatedly shown, when it comes to reaching the general public, the words at the top of the page might be as important, if not more, than the text of articles themselves. A new study titled "50 Years of Occupation" published by 416Labs, a research and data analytics firm based in Canada, analyzed nearly 100,000 news headlines about the conflict in the American press from five major American publications — the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal — over the past five decades. 19 June 2017 - This was one of those shows where Will and I covered a lot of ground. We did not have an interview (and there is no Extra Mad) so we just moved straight through the show with no breaks. I began with a nod acknowledging Will for bringing on Math Campbell last week and taking time from the discussion of the UK snap election results to talk with Math about the fact that the new agreement between the May government and the DUP has destabilized the already precarious Good Friday Agreement. This week Gerry Adams and the group of the Sinn Fein leadership met with PM May and made their grievances known and clear. Interestingly, Adams also pressed May on the fact that her austerity economics has drained more than £1bn out of the Northern Irish economy, an economy already dramatically endangered by the coming closure of the border between the Republic of Ireland and the Counties. I also took a moment to note that MP Jo Cox was assassinated one year ago this week and the memorial event her family planned, The Great Get Together (#Jo Cox, #GreatGetTogether, #MoreInCommon) spread deep and wide across the country as people joined to acknowledge their desire for less divisiveness and more unity. More than 100,000 listed events took place and millions of people participated in everything from fair-like activities held in parks to tea parties held at libraries, churches, mosques and synagogues and even in simple things like baking cupcakes for neighbors. In this week when members of Congress and their staff were terrorized in Alexandria, it seemed appropriate to take a look at what trying to heal could look like if we wanted it to. In our Hopping Mad's Lying Liar Lie of the Week segment Will's contender was the inability of the Trump administration to have any actual idea if Trump went to see Rep. Steve Scalise. I nominated Trump's "witch hunt" tweets and included my favorite response tweets. As it turns out, Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) made the best case. He, of course, represents Salem, MA. 'nuff said. In the body of the show I use the example of the central bank of Denmark warning its member banks about concerns related to the hot lending market despite the fact that all of those banks have passed ECB compatible stress testing. Meanwhile back in the US, the House voted to roll-back Dodd-Frank and the Trump administration is tamping down regulatory enforcement at every opportunity. This leaves only the Fed between us and the same economic disaster which nearly destroyed the economy in 2007. So - every time you hear the deeply misguided "audit the Fed" meme, I want you to remember this week and thank the Great Bunny that the US Federal Reserve is (relatively) independent and self-funded. Will then spoke about the violent, so-called "left" DemExit movement and enumerated the ways in which they not really part of the left and definitely not part of the Democratic Party. Their dangerous, nihilistic rhetoric is really not about politics it's just a self-justification for their rage. They are not interested in engaging in the public debate about policy. Truly, their only focus is on revolution in the streets and destruction. Just as progressives blame the GOP for not having called-out the violent, far right; progressives must now take responsibility and call out the terrorists on the farthest fringes of the left for both their views and actions. I followed-on the subject of the responsibility to speak out by talking about former Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's new book, Courage to Act. NOW Bernanke acknowledges the the economic crazy is all coming from one side, the GOP, and even goes so far as to blame the Obama administration for not having issued more progressive budgets and then fought for them. Ben, where were you then!?! This show will air on 19 June and so I thought it was appropriate to take time to talk about the history of Juneteenth and why it is a relevant and important holiday for all Americans. I have

If it was presented well, people would have accepted it."
