Today, I'm sharing why I'm taking a short break from the podcast. This pause is not a goodbye; rather, it's a necessary step for me to manage my time better as I juggle my salon business and prepare for my upcoming wedding. I want to ensure that I can provide the best content possible, and right now, I need to adjust and find the right balance. I'll be focusing on exciting developments in my career and personal life, which I look forward to sharing with you all once I return. Welcome to the We Will Fix It podcast short, where Colin Thomas and I, James Piecowye, talk about all things home maintenance. In today's episode, we're discussing the joys and pains of having a kitchen island, and what you need to consider before installing one. Colin shares that a kitchen island can be a magic addition to your home - it's not just a place for food prep, but also a gathering spot for family and friends. However, installing an island can be a huge challenge, especially if you're retrofitting one into an existing kitchen. To make sure you're prepared, Colin recommends three things: water supply, water waste, and power. You'll need power for appliances like dishwashers, and water supply and waste for sinks and filters. But the biggest challenge is drainage - you need the right angle for the pipes, and you'll likely need to dig a channel through your floor to make it work. And that's not all - once you've got the utilities in place, you'll need to choose the right tiles for your island. Colin shares his own experience of having to rip up and replace tiles due to a shoddy installation job, and warns that this can be an ongoing issue. So, before you decide to install a kitchen island, make sure you've thought through all the challenges and costs involved. But if you do it right, it can be a wonderful addition to your home. Welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where today we get to hear from Fergus Mainland. The man behind the mic for “The End of The Island Podcast”, also apart of the Junior Rowing News media accounts, Mainland has always had his foot somewhere in the sport of rowing, whether that be podcasting, writing, researching, or even commentating for British University Championships and Henley Women's Regatta. Fergus attended Newcastle University for five years, where he rowed for their crew team; yet, had to part ways when he was diagnosed with Glandular Fever. He chose to not let his illness get to him, and with the love he has for this sport, decided he could start coaching and being the President for the club team there at Newcastle. Him and some of his friends, established “The End of the Island Podcast” in April of 2020, which is affiliated with Junior Rowing News (JRN) during the world shutdown, and it has been an absolute hit, with people listening internationally! Mainland has been involved with Junior Rowing News for the past six years, but the actual organization, has been around for over a decade. JRN, a company of 40-50 people, partnered with British Rowing, is comprised of race previews that are volunteered-based from junior rowing athletes, where athletes get to preview races all around the UK. Hudson and Fergus discuss the overall impact and initiative that Junior Rowing News and “The End of The Island Podcast” has had on rowing as a whole, the differences that we see in rowing in the United States and the United Kingdom, how he has dealt with his illness, the naming behind his podcast, and even his love for football and the dynamic of collegiate rowing and all sports in the United States overall. Subak is the water management (irrigation) system for the paddy fields on Bali island, Indonesia. It was developed in the 9th century. For the Balinese, irrigation is not simply providing water for the plant's roots, but water is used to construct a complex, pulsed artificial ecosystem. The system consists of five terraced rice fields and water temples covering nearly 20,000 hectares (49,000 acres). The temples are the main focus of this cooperative water management, known as subak. Subak is a traditional ecologically sustainable irrigation system that binds Balinese agrarian society together within the village's Bale Banjar community center and Balinese temples. The water management is under the authority of the priests in water temples, who practice Tri Hita Karana Philosophy, a self-described relationship between The Humans, The Earth and The Creator. Tri Hita Karana draws together the realm of spirit, the human world and nature. The overall subak system exemplifies this philosophical principle. Water temple rituals promote a harmonious relationship between people and their environment through the active engagement of people with ritual concepts that emphasize dependence on the life-sustaining forces of the natural world. In late December of 2003, a 32 year old man named Russel drove along scenic back roads on an island off the coast of Washington State, until he arrived at his destination, a house tucked way back in the woods. After driving down the property's long driveway, Russel pulled into a parking spot and came to a stop. After turning off his car's engine, Russel went to unbuckle himself, when he stopped. Because right in front of him, in the tree line, he saw a figure moving in the shadows. As Russel leaned forward and strained his eyes to see who it was, the figure suddenly emerged and began walking quickly toward Russel's car. At first Russel thought he knew who this person was, but as they got closer, he knew that he didn't. It is one year that this podcast has been going on. It seems surreal that I have been doing it a whole year. The friends and information I have gathered has been incredible.
