The Tennessee Vols will begin the 2026 college football season ranked No. 20 in the preseason AP Top 25, but ESPN's Heather Dinich isn't convinced Tennessee should be ranked at all. Charlie Burris and Zach Ragan react to Dinich's criticism of Tennessee on the Big Orange Podcast and debate whether the national skepticism surrounding Josh Heupel's team is actually justified. Tennessee enters the season with legitimate questions. Josh Heupel still has a major quarterback decision to make between Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre, while the Vols also have uncertainty along the defensive line as Jim Knowles prepares for his first season running Tennessee's defense. But are those questions really enough to leave Tennessee completely outside the Top 25? That's where Charlie and Zach disagree with the ESPN criticism. The Vols aren't being given the benefit of the doubt as an elite College Football Playoff contender at No. 20. Instead, they're sitting directly in the range where a talented but uncertain Tennessee roster arguably belongs entering the season. Zach explains why Tennessee may also have one of the wider ranges of outcomes among teams in the preseason rankings. If the Vols get strong quarterback play from Brandon or MacIntyre and Tennessee's defensive front performs well, this could potentially become a Top 10-caliber team. If those questions aren't answered? Tennessee could look much more like a borderline Top 25 team. Charlie and Zach also examine the rest of the 2026 preseason AP Top 25 and question why Tennessee is being singled out when programs throughout the rankings have significant uncertainties of their own. Are Texas A&M and Ole Miss deserving of their lofty preseason rankings? What should we expect from Penn State? How much confidence should voters have in programs undergoing coaching transitions? And how much should any preseason poll actually mean in the transfer portal era? The guys also discuss why the first few weeks of the college football season could dramatically reshape these rankings and which highly ranked teams they believe could be vulnerable. Is Tennessee properly ranked at No. 20? Is ESPN overlooking the Vols' upside? Or are the quarterback and defensive-line questions significant enough to keep Tennessee outside the Top 25? Charlie Burris and Zach Ragan break it all down on the A to Z Sports Big Orange Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Washington Huskies and South Carolina Gamecocks could emerge as potential College Football Playoff shockers. With Demond Williams back at quarterback and Jedd Fisch calling plays, Washington's favorable Big Ten schedule—avoiding Ohio State and Michigan—sets the stage for an early statement game against USC and late-season showdowns with Indiana and Oregon. Can the Huskies capitalize despite key losses in their running back room? Meanwhile, South Carolina faces a grueling SEC slate, but a talented roster led by quarterback LaNorris Sellers could turn them into season-defining spoilers against Alabama, Georgia, and Clemson. The conversation explores the wild impact of transfer portal quarterbacks, with 64% of AP Top 25 teams starting transfers, and debates high school recruiting strategy versus portal reliance. Key insights include the lineup of portal signal-callers, NIL retention battles, and insights on teams like Arizona and SMU as under-the-radar playoff contenders. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper starts today's show from the practice fields after another eventful day at BYU football fall camp. Day 11 took place Tuesday at the Student-Athlete Building, where media were allowed to watch the final 20 minutes. Mitch shares his observations from the media window — who flashed, which position battles are tightening up, and how the Cougars are shaping up entering the final stretch before the September 5 opener against Utah Tech. With BYU checking in at No. 14 in the preseason AP Top 25, the expectations are real, and the on-field product at practice is reflecting that. Then Mitch pivots to the hardwood, where the 5-in-5 eligibility injunctions have turned BYU basketball's roster construction into one of the most fascinating storylines in college hoops. A temporary restraining order in California allows for Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler to be able to enter the portal and have another year of college eligibility. Could BYU get him? The American Fork, Utah, native who started for Tom Izzo and played in the Utah Jazz Summer League is considering Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, and BYU for his fifth year. Mitch breaks down how the injunction works, why the transfer portal rules add another layer of complexity, and what landing Kohler would mean for a BYU basketball team building around Rob Wright, Bruce Branch III, and Collin Chandler. In this college football podcast episode, we react to the first AP Top 25 of the 2026 season and our first preseason poll as official AP voters. We run through the top of the rankings, compare the national poll with our own ballot and talk about what it feels like to put actual votes behind all the opinions we’ve spent the offseason developing. Which teams already look a little too high or too low, and how much should anyone really trust a preseason poll before the games begin? Then it’s time for some Zagriculture. We take a bank of familiar college football narratives and draft the ones we’re most willing to push back against. Is Notre Dame really just a product of its schedule? Is Dabo Swinney actually cooked at Clemson? Can USC finally build a respectable defense under Lincoln Riley? What should we expect from Oregon when the biggest games arrive in January, and how much faith should anyone have in Lane Kiffin eventually delivering a championship at LSU? Along the way, we also wander into Ole Miss, Iowa and several other preseason assumptions that may look very different a few months from now. Plus, Ty gets talked into an alarmingly specific Iowa offensive prediction, Dan dabbles with weird phrasing, and we continue preparing for Week 0. The first AP Top 25 is out, and there's already plenty to argue about. Defending national champion Indiana somehow starts outside the Top 5 despite receiving the third-most first-place votes, Alabama opens outside the Top 10 for the first time in 18 years, and Clemson isn't ranked at all. We dig into those surprises, the teams sitting just outside the poll, and why preseason rankings are still mostly educated guesses. Then it's NFL preseason winners and losers: Tua struggled, Jamal Adams suffered a brutal non-contact injury, while Drew Allar and Rams rookie Ty Simpson delivered impressive performances. Jeff Howe and CJ Vogel react to Texas landing at No. 5 in the preseason AP Top 25 and explain why the ranking feels fair for a team with legitimate national championship talent. The Longhorns open behind Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia and Notre Dame, setting up a massive top-five showdown with the Buckeyes in Austin. But with seven ranked opponents—including five inside the top 11—Texas faces one of the most difficult schedules in college football. The guys compare Arch Manning's situation with fellow contenders CJ Carr and Dante Moore, debate where the true championship tier ends and identify what separates Texas from the teams ranked ahead of it. With proven stars such as Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, Colin Simmons and Raheem Biles, the talent is undeniable. Now the question is whether the Longhorns can handle the expectations, survive a brutal road schedule and execute well enough to reach the College Football Playoff. The preseason AP Top 25 is out and BYU checks in at No. 14, tied with USC with 839 points. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper reacts to the Cougars' highest preseason ranking since the 1985 season, the year after BYU's national championship. It's only the 13th time in program history BYU has appeared in the preseason AP poll and just the second time in the Kalani Sitake era. Four Big 12 teams made the cut — Texas Tech at No. 12, BYU at No. 14, Utah at No. 21, and Houston at No. 23 — and BYU's October 17 home date with No. 4 Notre Dame is already circled in red. Historically, BYU has finished higher than its preseason AP ranking only twice (1981, 2009). Can the Cougars make it a third? Mitch discusses what this ranking means for expectations, the College Football Playoff picture, and how voters are viewing BYU's returning production, headlined by Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin and quarterback Bear Bachmeier. The ongoing Kalani Sitake–BYU football resources and athletic department remains front and center for pockets of Cougar Nation. The speculation that dominated the past two weeks shows no signs of fading, even as the season draws closer. Since Sitake told reporters at picture day, "I'm easy to get along with as long as you take care of our football team," the conversation has only intensified. Sitake's earlier comment that BYU has been "given the challenge of doing the most with the least" added fuel. The hiring of Kentucky's Marc Hill as deputy AD and Santiago's need to post on CougarBoard to debunk firing rumors have kept this story in the backdrop of fall camp. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper shares his thoughts and insight into the situation and makes it clear that BYU has to take care of Kalani Sitake. Finally, Mitch recaps an eventful scrimmage as BYU enters week three of fall camp. The Cougars ran 102 plays at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, and the offense had the upper hand. Bear Bachmeier was in a "great rhythm," according to Sitake, who gave the offense a "slight edge" over the defense.
