Powered by Firstory Hosting

Compared to modern record keeping, not all of the details surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence are known. Case in point, although we know the date, we do not know the specific time of day when it passed and was signed. Other questions remain such as who offered what changes and were they incorporated in Jefferson's final draft? But what we do know is the long-lasting impact this incredible document had that changed the world. As we kick off the new year, a year in which we celebrate the 250th birthday of our country, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Auslin as our guest this week. Dr. Auslin is the Payson J. Treat Distinguished Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University and author of "National Treasure: How the Declaration of Independence Made America."

Episode 348 features Michael Torres of the Beers With Bands Podcast. This is technically part 2 of a collaborative episode I did on his show as well. Feel free to check out part 1 if you'd like to hear the entirety of the conversation. The Beers With Bands Podcast started out focusing on the Twin Cities/Minneapolis scene but has since branched out to covering bands nationally and internationally. Michael's show is very similar to mine in concept, and we both share a love of beer, so it was an extremely fun conversation. We talked in depth about podcasting and all of our favorite things about it. If you enjoy Michael's style, you can find him on any of the Beers With Bands socials. And if you're in a band, his email is easily available. Thanks for listening and supporting local musicians!

In the November episode, author Michael Engelhard joins host Aaron Lelito to talk about his essay collection No Place Like Nome: The Bering Strait Seen Through Its Most Storied City. In this chat, we learn what brought Michael to Alaska, why Nome is a special place (even by Alaskan standards), and how we can learn from a grizzly bear mother protecting her cubs. Michael was trained as an anthropologist with a degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and he worked for twenty-five years as a wilderness guide and outdoor instructor in Alaska and on the Colorado Plateau. In No Place Like Nome, Michael Engelhard surveys the seam that links two neighboring continents through the lens of one pivotal city. The region's legacy of millennia shines on pages enriched by this writer's recollections-from mammoths to Cold War monuments, from a spa turned orphanage to cyclist miners and shaman hoards. Meet the explorers and adventurers, reindeer herders and hustlers, the dancers, drummers, dreamers, warriors, walrus-tusk carvers, and whalers, clergy, foragers, and photographers who shaped a place of conflicting visions as thoroughly as it shaped them. See more about Michael's book here.

Luister, like en abonneer.
Ein Gespräch am märchenhaften Ort Im September 2025 traf Wolfgang Tischer den österreichischen Autor Michael Köhlmeier im Schwarzwald anlässlich der 10. Literaturtage Nordschwarzwald.

"It's Only Rock and Roll" There's a lot to tell about Michael Des Barres, but let's start with the music. In the early '70s, the Sussex-born singer/songwriter fronted the glam rock band Silverhead, who were signed to Deep Purple's label. He decided to try his luck on the West Coast, moving to L.A. and fronting the rock/soul outfit, who were signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records. In '82, Des Barres formed the hard rock band Chequered Past with Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols and Clem Burke of Blondie. That band opened for folks like INXS and Duran Duran and that Duran Duran association proved auspicious as Des Barres was invited by Andy Taylor to replace Robert Palmer as the singer of The Power Station. I know I said Des Barres was a rock and roll chameleon, but at this point he sounds more like a rock and roll shark, doesn't he? He never stops moving. Des Barres fronted The Power Station at Live Aid and along the way he co-wrote "Obsession" with Holly Knight, which became a global hit for Animotion, he put out fabulous solo records, fronted another band called The Mistakes and in 2013 he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the world premiere of 200 Motels: The Suites, by Frank Zappa in which he appeared as Rance, the narrator. We'll get to his new album in a second, but let's talk about his acting first. Des Barres has so many IMDB credits, it's dizzying. Getting his start at age eight, he's appeared in over 100 television shows and close to fifty movies. Let me run through a few because it's nuts: All you '80s kids might remember him in The Ghoulies, but he was in To Sir With Love, Under Siege, and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive and on television he was on Roseanne, Just Shoot Me, Frasier, Seinfeld, St. Elsewhere and MacGyver. Des Barres is a true rock and roll chameleon, because, like a chameleon, he's able to effortlessly change from situation to situation. That subtle shapeshifting quality makes folks like Des Barres able to basically do whatever he wants because he has massive range and can move through the cultural space with otherworldly ease. Des Barres' new album It's Only Rock and Roll is an affectionate tipping of the hat to the songs of the '70s that he loves. From Roxy Music's Love Is The Drug to Sweet's Fox On The Run to the Faces' Stay With Me, this is a scorcher of a record that features Des Barres sounding better than ever--his delivery still has the same muscular pounce and raw elegance and the 12 songs here are delivered with equal parts affection, admiration and grace. Boasting over 20 years in the transportation sector, Michael has driven record membership growth and advocates for 35,000 workers and business owners. His impactful partnerships include appointments by Maryland Governors Wes Moore and Larry Hogan. Michael previously held significant roles at the American Road and Transportation Builders Association and has received accolades for innovation. He holds a degree from George Mason University and an Executive Education Certificate from Yale School of Management. Episode Summary: In this enlightening episode of The Chris Voss Show, Chris is joined by Michael Sakata, President and CEO of the Maryland Transportation Builders and Materials Association. Michael shares deep insights into the intricacies of infrastructure management, the state of US infrastructure, and the critical need for investments and innovations in this sector. The conversation ranges from specifics about local infrastructure projects to broader discussions about federal funding mechanisms and the challenges of maintaining and upgrading transportation systems. The episode kicks off with Chris and Michael discussing the importance of infrastructure and the repercussions of failures like the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident. Michael addresses the current state of infrastructure in the US and underscores the necessity for sustained funding and innovative solutions to overcome the challenges posed by outdated systems and modern-day needs. They also delve into the intricacies of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and its impact on infrastructure projects across the nation. Other topics include the role of public-private partnerships, the influence of electric vehicles on gas tax revenue, and the critical importance of active citizen engagement in lobbying for better infrastructure. Key Takeaways: Infrastructure's Critical Role: Michael stresses that robust infrastructure is essential for economic stability and public safety, reflecting on the devastating impact of infrastructural failures like the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Federal and State Funding: Federal funding, largely stagnated since 1993 without increased gas taxes, is insufficient alone. States need to find innovative funding solutions to supplement these shortfalls. Public-Private Partnerships (P3s): P3s are highlighted as an essential strategy for developing infrastructure quickly, though they come with long-term costs and commitments. Impact of Electric Vehicles (EVs): EVs, due to their lower contribution to gas taxes and heavy weight, pose unique challenges for infrastructure funding and maintenance. Actionable Advocacy: Engaging with legislators to emphasize the importance of infrastructure funding is crucial for sustaining and improving transportation systems. Notable Quotes: "Infrastructure improvements are essential to move us from a C rating to something more respectable, ensuring the economic well-being and safety of our nation." "The federal gas tax hasn't increased since 1993, and this stagnation is a significant hurdle for funding infrastructure." "Public-private partnerships can fast-track infrastructure projects, but come with the obligation of long-term tolls and private management." "Electric vehicles, despite their environmental benefit, are not contributing similarly to infrastructure maintenance due to their minimal gas tax payments." "It's vital for citizens to lobby their legislators for improved infrastructure funding – our roads, bridges, and overall transport systems depend on it."
