Graham Laycock talks to Ted Bates from the Molesey Boat Club with news of this weekend's Molesey Regatta.
Lisa Edie looks forward to this weekend's regatta talking to Fe Woods PR and Entertainment and Telfyn Beddoe a long term rower, and member of Molesey Boat Club. The regatta is on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July, 9am to 6pm at Hurst Meadows, West Molesey.

Lee is back with the second of his three-part look at slasher films from North America produced in the 1990s. As the genre went on to the middle of the decade it still seemed directionless, throwing whatever at the wall and seeing what sticks, and often just trying to do what worked in the 1980s... until a little film called "Scream" appeared on the scene. --Dylan Tells Heather About Chase & And Now Heeeere's Freddy from "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" (1994) --J. Tamara is just back from a multi-generational trip to the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar. If you have ever wondered what it is like to stay at one of the popular Baha Mar Resorts, now is your chance to get the scoop and see if it is really the vacation of your dreams or not. Episode Highlights: This was a multi-generational trip with 14 people ages 17-83. There were a lot of considerations when choosing a destination including budget, activities, direct flights, and mobility issues. Tamara also considered the Hyatt in Aruba, the Hilton Zemi Beach House in Anguilla, and the Westin or Kimpton Seafire in Grand Cayman. There are three hotels within one resort at the Baha Mar and it has multiple restaurants, making it possible to stay for a week and eat somewhere different every night without taking cabs into town. The food is really expensive at the Baha Mar so you need to build that into the budget as it is inline with going out for a nice dinner in a big city, which is similar to many other island resorts. The three hotels are: Rosewood Baha Mar - luxury property SLS Baha Mar - good for couples, friends, and more of a party scene Grand Hyatt Baha Mar - good for families and more affordable There is also a "Reserve" section of the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar with suites and lounge access that is a hotel within a hotel You fly into Nassau and you fill out a form on arrival and then the immigration line was quite short. They pre-arranged hotel transfers through the concierge. There are many pools within the Grand Hyatt but if you don't reserve a cabana, sunbed or premium lounge chair it could be hard to find chairs, especially if you want a larger group to be together. They rented a cabana at the Nexus Club, which has an indoor section with a couch, television, fridge, and a full bathroom. It also had a sun bed, a table and chairs with an umbrella, and use of two in-pool loungers. It was a private pool just for those renting cabanas or staying at a certain room category that included a hot tub. It also had its own bar and food service. The beach isn't deep but it is longed and it is lined with 4-6 rows of lounge chairs packed in together and the beach was quite busy even in June. There is also a waterpark that is included for guests with some big slides and a lazy river, as well as a good restaurant. You can do paddle boarding and snorkeling and there are also paid motorized water sports and there is an activities desk that arranges excursions and day trips. The Baha Mar also has a kids club with daily activities and there are flamingos that do a "parade" every morning. The food at Baha Mar was very good and even Tamara was impressed. Regatta is where they serve a huge breakfast buffet but it costs about $44 per person. Because Tamara is a preferred partner with Hyatt Prive, she was able to get the following perks and amenities: Free breakfast for 2 people per day per room $100 per room resort credit $50 per room beverage credit automatic upgrade within 24 hours of booking There are many pool bars serving food for lunch and there are also food trucks by the beach. You need to pre-book dinner reservations and they cover the gamut from Italian, Asian, Chinese, Steak, Mediterranean, and some celebrity chef restaurants like Cafe Boulud and Marcus Fish and Chop House (from Marcus Samuelson) In Tamara's opinion, the Baha Mar is better suited for families with teens or adults versus with younger kids as the casino is really the center point of the resort. Handling varying levels of dedication to the sport in masters clubs. How do you give the both the person who wants to practice once a week and the person who trains daily a meaningful race situation? Timestamps 01:00 This is normal for masters rowing. Training and practice commitment isn't an issue usually until it comes to racing. When going to a regatta you want to be in a crew where you're the 'worst' in the crew. Competitive people want the best possible crew. 02:30 Coach selects lineups In most youth rowing clubs the coaches do selection - this takes the emotion out of the lineups. Types of race - in your calendar there are local events and bigger events like the masters national championships. Each year you will have 2 or 3 peaks which help you manage your training load. Typically most masters will do 3 + races in a single day. 05:00 Racing Priorities In local regattas your racing priorities may be different. The more experienced people can race both with less experienced (mixed ability crews) as well as their own regular training group. To get the racing priorities accurate, the single scull is the best measure. The outcome is up to you alone. Regatta organisers can enable a pathway into racing for masters - novice - new masters - age group. Differentiate based on rowing experience, not age for the first 5 years of racing. 07:45 Preferences and compromises Aligning can be challenging. Fitness matters a lot in racing; bladework skills are also important. Enabling compromise as part of your lineup selection can help give a meaningful experience. The fitter athletes find compromise less palatable when rowing with less experienced people. There is satisfaction to be had from a mixed ability crew. Skill judging stroke rate and technical calls through the race is a worthwhile endeavour. "That was harder than childbirth". Achieving the best possible outcome for this crew. Can you mentally set yourself up to see satisfaction from both types of races with experienced people and less experienced people? 14:30 Regular training groups Folks who always train together means there is no way in for a newcomer. Club priorities can enable coaches to make selections and validate their choices with the Captain (who's independent). A goal could be to enable your groups (elite, intermediate, new masters, novices) to all have at least one event in which they stand a chance of being competitive. I've found this is a method which helps to bring on less experienced people so that in future years they advance faster than if you just leave them to race in their skill group. 17:00 The art of compromise is discussion without emotion. Rebecca invites people to choose a priority crew which she tries to guarantee that race. Everything else is secondary. This means some events are "sub-optimal. The competitive spirit drives racers to selfish outcomes. This is an attribute of successful racers. It can be hard for athletes to accept their perception of being put in sub-optimal crew lineups. Independent lineup confirmation and discussion of compromises helps to frame these decisions. Balance our priority against the opportunity of this one regatta. The club is the entity which should set the goals (3-5 years) and how this impacts regatta entry choices. Tell us how your club manages their crews for regattas. Want easy live streams like this? Rowing officials have banned allowing what are effectively year 14 students —once referenced as "eighth-formers"— from competing at the premier annual Maadi Cup regatta after decades of angst. The practice would sometimes see pupils spend more time grunting away in skiffs than studying in the classroom during the opening term of the year. New Zealand School Sport boss Mike Summerell told Mike Hosking a resolution was found. He says it came down to the idea of what's fair. Summerell says that their rules have always been that if you're at school, you should be able to reap the benefits of everything that comes with school. However, he says, while they believe sport is an incredibly important part of school, it's not part of the education curriculum, and that allows sports to set rules that allow for a level playing field. In many cases, this list features instrumental versions of songs Lee has used in previous episodes, and Lee does much less talking than in previous installments of this series. This makes for an easier episode to put together for Lee, and more music for you the listener. It's like you won a new shiny red dune buggy! --Across the Fields & Dune Buggy (Instrumental) from "Watch Out, We're Mad!" (1974) --Driving All Around (Instrumental) & Goodbye My Friend (Rock Version) from "Street Law" (1974) --Afyon (Instrumental) from "The Sicilian Connection" (1974) --Sliding Crime from "Violent Rome" (1975) --Flat Foot Cop from "Flatfoot in Hong Kong" --Suspense from "Hit Squad" (1976) --E Nun ce vojo sta from "Hit Squad" (1976) --Alberto Griso --Verso l'avventura from "Soldier of Fortune" (1976) --Ultimo Inseguimento & Agguato from "The Big Racket" (1976) --Miss Robot from "Bulldozer" (1978) --In Africa, Freedom (Single Side A Alt Mix), Diamonds #2 & African Disco from "Flatfoot in Africa" (1978) Opening and closing music: Theme from Slaughter from "Slaughter" by Billy Preston, and Too Risky a Day for a Regatta from "Tentacles" by Stelvio Cipriani.

We try and discuss as many as we can and talk about all the different boats out there. Lee finally broke down and did the obvious for the Christmas season, and built a playlist featuring movies set during the Christmas season. This time out they all happen to be from movies in the 1980s, and mostly Christmas horror. Of course, due to the release schedule of this podcast, it's a few days late.
