Welcome to episode 18 (Bonus Episode) of Mind Bloom, in celebration of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This Thursday, Marina Gee speaks with Dr. Jen Montes, MD, MPH, with Hunterdon Healthcare in New Jersey. Dr. Montes is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in diseases of the breast and she is going to be telling us everything she knows about LCIS, breast cancer before forty, and the myths surrounding causes and risk factors for breast cancer. As the founder of Evolve Pink, Dr. Montes is going to be telling us so much about Life After Breast Cancer and how to bridge the two phases in most cancer patients' lives: during cancer care and treatment and after the "all clear" from the medical team. In a nutshell, Evolve Pink is dedicated to giving women the tools to transform the most catastrophic event in their lives into the catalyst for empowerment, self-love and greatness. Nope. We’re not watching the cheese-filled CBS show, we’re watching Helen Slater fight Faye Dunaway in a very strange film from the 80s. arkOS creator Jacob Cook and the talented artist & developer Jen Montes join the guys to review a piece of super hero history, Supergirl. Chris watched way too many documentaries like You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman to prepare for this show. Meanwhile, Jen watched Supergirl religiously as a child. Like Superman III, Supergirl was panned by reviewers. Also, it did not do well at the box office. Note the poster on the Wikipedia page. There’s something wrong with the Statue of Liberty. “Look at the British Peters!” Shouts Paul. Meaning O’Toole and Cook. Why is that Brenda Vaccaro looking so familiar? Chris live tweeted his viewing, the new version of show notes. Chris confuses who gets shrunk into who in Innerspace. And is this where Kara’s city is? Paul thinks the pocket universe is the inside of Zardoz’s stone head. Paul wonders if the spaceship flight is inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. Jacob thinks this can’t be anything but a space dildo. Chris thinks Faye Dunaway is wearing the Cybill Shepherd collection from Moonlighting. Jen says “the flying ballet” scene is to remind us that she’s a girl and we all cringe. What’s America like? Truckers. Matt Frewer delivers the worst dialogue as a trucker in a scene where Supergirl meets Max Headroom. We don’t like these writers very much. Jacob wonders why all the A&W product placement. Even on rapist truckers. Next on Law and Order: PZU (Phantom Zone Unit). Gardner guy is also the douchey guy from the first Die Hard film. Paul says there’s more magic in this film, but it is way more boring than Doctor Strange. Paul compares the lengthy flying scenes to the very long Star Trek: The Motion Picture. We have no budget so we’ve dressed all the bad guys like their from THX 1138. Is that a morlock in the Phantom Zone? Nope, it’s Peter O’Toole! Jacob suggests no one can replace Faye Dunaway in this film except maybe Tilda Swinton. Chris argues making the film even worse with Melanie Griffith. Jacob recommends that listeners watch Labyrinth. Then, he says we should review it on the show. Hmm… Jen says you need to check out Barbarella. Paul says he cannot make a better recommendation and jumps on this, well. Chris suggests Electric Booglaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. In the time since we recorded this, Jacob has launched an awesome way to get your arkOS on, with his new hosted service Skylark. Jen can be found on twitter or github. Thanks to both of them for all the laughs. It’s probably our longest show because we spent 24 minutes laughing. Stay tuned for next season. It’s right around the corner, by the time we post this! This episode features discussions of cities in New York that aren’t New York City, succeeding in university and it turns out there are people who love candy corn. No. Really! Our guest Tierney Coren is part of the Node.js Evangelism Work Group, a web developer, designer, writer and student. The glorious reputation of Utica. Tierney teaches us that the origin point of the grid system in Salt Lake is the Mormon Temple. Chris has been using Here.com to replace Google Maps. Tierney & Paul have issues using Duck Duck Go for search. However, Paul does love the !bangs. Chris defends DDG, but shares an option given to him on the Cupcake.io community, Startpage.com. Tierney is doing an accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s program at SUNY Poly. We previously did a show with a professor of information design, part 1 & part 2. Let’s talk about our dark future with 1984, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451. More books? How about Snow Crash, Ready Player One, Wuthering Heights & The Prince. Tierney thinks previous guest Arturo could be the protagonist from Snow Crash. Paul & guest review the Twilight Saga films. Tierney’s instructor is obsessed with TiddlyWiki, so he’s learned a lot about it. Let’s Encrypt is in beta. Tierney teaches Chris about Coursera. SuperCard Suite wants to be your HyperCard replacement. Tierney was using ghost for his site. He tried Jekyll and Hexo. He settled on Metalsmith, a static site generator. Paul says the Montreal Sauce & Film Frown sites are also created with a static site generator, PieCrust. The setup is documented on his blog, A Podcaster is Me. Chris mentions that he’s going to take a stab at joining the IndieWebCamp movement with a new site using Known. He was inspired by Jeena.net and our chat with Jen Montes, part 1, part 2. A really great way to connect with Webmentions is to use brid.gy. Thanks for listening to the episode & thanks to &! (@bitandbang), Tierney, for chatting on the Sauce. This is the second half our conversation with artist & developer, Jen Montes. We discuss being multilingual, Puerto Rico, Python, GitHub, and poutine. Jen currently works on the TV show Archer. Chris tries to show off, saying he learned Spanish from watching, Home Alone in Mexico. Jen wonders what the difference between European French and Quebec French is? Jacob, who is in the chatroom, chimes in to share his experience in Quebec. Jen grew up in Puerto Rico which reminds Chris of a recent Last Week Tonight video on voting rights in U.S. Territories. The Insular Cases are the awkward Supreme Court documents that surmise people in territories under the control of America do not receive all the rights guaranteed in the constitution. Paul is reminded of the videos by CPG Grey, American Empire and The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained. Paul explores Jen’s GitHub page and we talk Python. Jacob is looking forward to ES6 Harmony the sixth edition of Javascript. Jen is interested in the way Tent and the Indie Web movement are working. She hopes to build a personal site that interacts with other networks, but all her data is in one central place. One project Jen is working on is a file browser for the nifty, dropbox-like Syncthing. Remembering PaintShop Pro and 3D Studio Max, which are still made! Jen tells us that you can still get The Print Shop! That’s more exciting than baseball. Jeena’s site is a great example of indieweb ideas in the real world. He explains it in a blog post, IndieWeb Join us! Known is a service using the indieweb principles. Without having programing knowledge you can jump right in and begin publishing your own site. Jen is not a tremendous TV show junky but she does appreciate watching shows as a social activity. She watches The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and of course Archer with groups of friends. We hope you’ve enjoyed this episode with Jen Montes. It’s fairly obvious that we had a good time. Up next, a topical show on privacy. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon

Jen Montes currently works on the animated show Archer. She started out as an illustrator and now develops tools to assist the artists & animators. We talk about federating the web, cats, electrical engineering and jazz hands. Jen wanted to join us sooner, however the entire team that creates Archer gets together to watch each episode on Thursday nights. We fall into Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt recaps because we all enjoy the jokes. Illustrators build Archer characters in Adobe Illustrator and they animate in After Effects. Jen created the video for the arkOS fundraising campaign. In the chat room, Jacob wonders if the people who make Archer also made Frisky Dingo. Adam Reed & Matt Thompson are the minds behind Frisky Dingo, Sealab 2021 and Archer. Chris and Jen have both listened to the Nerdist Writer’s Panel podcast about Archer. Growing up Jen had a rad Tandy computer. Jen learned Electrical Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, was accepted to the Georgia Tech PHD robotics program and built satellites for Boeing. Of course, she never stopped pursuing her creative and artistic passions. Chris recommends Iron Sky because it was not only crowd funded, but crowdsourced. HitRecordTV is another collaborative production. Where is our art collaboration website? Jen imagines a GitHub-like network for artists. We learn that Electrical engineering field is huge. A Tribe Called Quest lied to us about the pronunciation of El Segundo. Jen says she left Boeing because she was only “pushing desks.” Chris relates that the recent TV show Halt and Catch Fire illustrates her point. Be an intern & fetch coffee at IBM or work at a small firm and get your hands dirty writing BIOS. Chris proposes re-scripting Archer as a Spanish soap opera, like it’s creator did with Sealab2021. Thanks to Jen Montes and her cat for taking time in the evening to gab with us. Stay tuned for the next episode to her more from the artist and developer. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
