Have you ever found yourself standing in the kitchen after a long day, thinking, “I just need something sweet”? Not because you're hungry. Not because it's time for dinner. But because your nerves are fried, your patience has packed up and left, and your brain is screaming, “I need a win.” or “I want to relax and now it's my turn.” Or maybe it's not even about stress. Maybe you had a good day. You got a lot done, you kept things together, and now you want a reward. And that reward just happens to look like a cookie. Or a drive-thru order. Or that giant glass of wine that can fit the whole bottle in one glass. The problem is that cookies aren't about hunger at all. It's your brain asking to be seen, soothed, or celebrated. Welcome back to our 6 part series on excuses called Excuses Exposed. Today we're talking about emotional excuses. The ones that whisper things like, “I deserve this,” or “I just want it,” or “It's not fair.” These are the moments when food becomes your therapist, your reward, or your tiny rebellion. And listen, I get it. These thoughts feel true. But what they're really doing is putting food in charge of your feelings—and that's a lot of pressure to put on a bag of chips. Sandy Rosenthal founded the non-profit Levees.org in 2005 with 25,000 supporters nationwide. Her book, Words Whispered in Water, is about how––against all odds––she altered the national narrative about the deadly flooding in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. A second edition of her book, with a new cover and foreword, will be issued for the 20th anniversary of the catastrophe.Her group's current goal is for all students in the U.S. working toward their B.S. in engineering to receive instruction on failures and the lessons learned. In March of 2019, Rosenthal unveiled the Flooded House Museum at a major breach site. She initiated the installation of three historic plaques vetted by the state's preservation office, hosts an annual levee breach bike tour, and much more.For those efforts, Rosenthal has been honored with numerous awards most recently including Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year from Tulane University and Most Influential Woman from Mount Holyoke College. Rosenthal is an advocate for 62% of the American population living in counties protected by levees. Rosenthal has been married to Stephen Rosenthal since 1979, has three adult children, and has two grandchildren living in San Francisco. It got me thinking that I really want to start something with my Legacy Fiber Artz minis from previous year advents. Maybe a Granny Stripe blanket? Or perhaps another Recollections crochet blanket. I made one in the summer of 2022 (check out my Ravelry Project Page). It uses fingering weight yarn held triple and treble crochets. You work each row right to left and cut each time. between each set of clusters you use a main color. Debating using Fibernymph 10g minis from last year's advent for those rows (notes say it used- about 8g per row but that's held triple which might just be too annoying). I'm debating making a smaller blanket that will live on the backseat of my car, draped over. Mostly for the pop of color with my gray interior but I bet the kids would use it when they're back there. I'd also like to make a crocheted granny square tank top for the summer so I could potentially use some of my minis for that. Do you have any ideas for me?
