On our 80th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends what better way to follow up a Road House podcast than by looking at the highlights of pioneering gay director John Schlesinger? We're talking about 1969's Midnight Cowboy starring Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Brenda Vaccaro, John McGiver, Sylvia Miles, Bob Balaban and Barnard Hughes as well as 1971's Sunday, Bloody Sunday starring Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson, Murry Head and Dame Peggy Ashcroft topped off with 1975's The Day of the Locust starring William Atherton, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, Burgess Meredith, Bo Hopkins, Pepe Serna, Geraldine Paige, Richard Dysart, Lil' Jackie Earl Haley, an even littler Billy Barty and Mrs. Lovey Howell, herself, Natalie Schaeffer. I'm joined this week by the reliably ab-fab crew of my kid-sister and lit major Roseanne Caputi as well as the sensitive cowhand himself, actor, photographer and snappy patter producer par excellence Gordon Alex Robertson! Okay, before we don the fringed suede jackets and find a spot on 43rd St., the synopses: In Midnight Cowboy big, dumb Texan Joe Buck quits his job as a dishwasher and hops on a Greyhound to the big town, New York City with dreams of making his fortune as a male prostitute servicing rich, bored housewives on Park Avenue. After a series of cringe-inducing misfires, Joe finds himself penniless and living in a squalid, condemned apartment with a sickly, limping con man named Enrico “Ratso” Rizzo. With Ratso serving as Joe's manager the only place they can go is straight down. Barely surviving a New York winter, Joe's fortunes finally start to change for the better until a dying Ratso implores Joe to get him to Florida. Sunday, Bloody Sunday slowly--ever so slowly-- catalogues the highs and lows of two middle-aged, upper-class Londoners, one man, Dr. Daniel Hirsch, a perennially single doctor and one woman, Alex Greville a divorcee who both find purpose and vitality in a love triangle with Bob Elkin, a young sculptor in his 20's. The three must deal with abrupt change, loss and acceptance when Bob the sculptor moves to America. The Day of the Locust, based on the 1939 novel by Nathaniel West, follows the course of three, tragic dreamers who came to Hollywood with eyes toward stardom but end up victims of its cold-hearted excess: Tod Hacket, a somewhat idealistic --if a bit rapey set designer from Yale-- who is in love with Fay Greener, a beautiful but talentless day playing actress who refuses to date men that aren't wealthy, and none other than Homer Simpson, a simple, religious and socially awkward accountant who naively takes Fay in to live with him. Was Mr. Schlesinger an all time great? Or a one hit wonder? Find out! Yes, this week I went to see the Broadway musical, Days of Wine & Roses, which leads to the question, why make a musical on Days of Wine & Roses. BUT, I do enjoy complaining so - I like to see everything and it's hard for anything to live up to Back to the Future at this point so. . . Also, this week - a funeral for one of the comedy club owners in town; a classic Russian meal at an authentic Russian restaurant with a run in with the late Brenda Vaccaro (she's not actually dead, who knew?); and another dinner with Dave Attell. Fortunately, we're good until August now.

The careers of those involved - Tony Roberts, Brenda Vaccaro, Arthur Penn, etc. - get a quick look, along with some attention to the show's obvious predecessor - How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Cameos abound from the likes of Hubert Humphrey, the fighting Gamecocks of South Carolina, Angela Lansbury, Zorro the Gay Blade, and many more! WHAT THE F**K WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?HOW NOW DOW JONES by The Original Cast (RCA, 1967)This is the second Broadway soundtrack that Captain Billy has covered, the first being Lerner and Loewe's Camelot, and even though as a small child I had memorized my parent's Oliver, The Sound of Music, and My Fair Lady albums, after Rock, Folk and Soul music entered my life, I lost interest in the musicals of the Great White Way completely. As I explained in previous episodes, many of the carts in my collection were not chosen by me; they arrived in big lots, and the experience of discovering some of these hidden treasures is akin to sticking one's hand into a bag of….. (fill in the blank). Despite its catchy title, this show was totally unknown to me, although it did run for 220 performances. It was produced and directed by Broadway titans David Merrick and George Abbott. It was film scorer Elmer Bernstein's only Broadway composition; the book was by Max Shulman, of Dobie Gillis fame, and the lyrics were by Carolyn Leigh — a totally respectable crew. The cast included Woody Allen's avatar, Tony Roberts, and the whiskey throated Brenda Vaccaro in the leads, and there was even a Tony awarded to featured actor Hiram Sherman for his turn as a crusty stock broker. Yet, somehow the collective memory of this musical was lost to the ozone pretty quickly. Maybe it's the complicated plot- (It was always part of the charm of these albums to try and imagine the story as I listened) - but here the labyrinthian plot and convoluted conjunction of characters - (tycoons, stock brokers, government officials, suicidal, mismatched lovers, tour guides, and “the voice of Wall Street”) - had my Pandemic-addled brain yearning for a YouTube training video. There was a hit that emerged from the chaos, “Step to the Rear”, which you might recognize: it was even used in a Lincoln-Mercury campaign, and there is a charming video of Tony Roberts with a stage full of investor ladies from the suburbs marching around the stage to the song.Give this recording a try, and see if you can figure it all out.

You should see professional consultation for your individual tax and legal situation. Steve Moskowitz: Welcome. This is Steve Moskowitz, and welcome to Practical Tax. I'd like to introduce you to my friend, colleague, and go host, Chip Franklin. Chip Franklin: Steve is recovering from COVID. It's good to see he's got some rose in his cheeks, which is nice to see as well, it's one of the byproducts of this. What's interesting Steve, I love talking with you, because of your passion for taxes. I was looking at when you were on some of these sports shows, and we'd bring up luxury taxes and stuff, and just how you get into it. At the end of the day, taxes are about people. We all have to deal with them. We all benefit from them. They can do wonderful things for our society. We all have criticisms and worries about that, too. Real quick, you came here with all your possessions in a box, to San Francisco. Steve Moskowitz: I moved to San Francisco many moons ago, with all my worldly possession in four cardboard boxes. I bought a one way ticket from New York city to San Francisco, and said, "Here I am. I'm going to get my fancy, advanced law degree, specialization in tax, and see what I'm going to do with it." I liked San Francisco, decided to stay, and that was many years ago. Chip Franklin: You've turned that this business from an accountant/attorney into an outreach for people that covers everything from cannabis, as we just heard last episode, to cryptocurrency. It fascinates me. There's other people here in San Francisco, that we've met, that have an interest, obviously, in people, and money, and helping them through periods like that. Joining us right now is a CEO for Pacific Private Money, and a good friend to both of ours, and we've been with before, and worked with before, and that would be Mark Hanf. He joins us here, on our Practical Tax podcast. Hello Mark, good to see you, my friend. Steve Moskowitz: Hi Mark. Mark Hanf: Gentlemen, how are you? Steve, sorry about your voice. Steve Moskowitz: I'm very much looking forward to getting it back, because why'd you say, who's that guest host you have on? What happened to Steve? Chip Franklin: I think the ladies think it's sexy. I think it's a male version of Brenda Vaccaro happening right there. Mark Hanf: A little bit of Rod Stewart going there. Steve Moskowitz: Thanks guys. Chip Franklin: Explain to us about your business. You guys have two parts of your business, and we'll talk about both of them, but tell us a little bit about what hard money is, and what you guys do. Mark Hanf: The term hard money is a little bit dated. Usually 20 years ago, the hard money guy was the guy that everyone knew in town, that if you were in a pinch, you can go to him for money. As long as he thought you had real estate worth enough capital, he'd lend you the money. I started Pacific Private Money 15 years ago, and even now, we prefer the term alternative real estate provider. Essentially, what we do is, we use private capital from investors, most of whom are right here in the bay area, and we make short-term bridge loans to people, to help them either buy their next home when they're trying to compete with ca...

Ken Olandt: A Career Of Strength & Charm His journey from dreams of being an ice hockey player into modeling and then acting, the unique way he improved his performing skills, what he learned while he was a student of Gordon Hunt and Howard Fine and training alongside George Clooney, his first gig on "Days of Our Lives" and his first speaking lines on "Matt Houston," staring with Jennifer Aniston in the cult horror hit "Leprechaun" and the stunt involving Warwick Davis and Deep Roy that left one of them injured! From there, it's off to Star Trek TNG "Bloodlines," and we chat about working with Patrick Stewart, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner, and why he believes that episode of Star Trek is some of his finest work (in spite of the annoying tight outfits he wore). Here on Anime Was (Not) A Mistake, we've used our Sinister Six event to showcase a number of "bad" movies. We paid the price for our hubris and today's episode has left us forever changed. Released in 1984, Supergirl tells the story of Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, as she arrives on Earth in pursuit of the Omegahedron. The movie does have more of a plot, but there's no way we could properly describe it here. Faye Dunaway is able to use dark magic. There's a gardener with no name. Brenda Vaccaro smokes and drinks a lot. Peter O'Toole is also there for some reason. This movie drove us to the Phantom Zone (in a metaphorical) sense, so make sure that you have nerves of steel (and some Frosted Flakes) before listening. We decided to return to the work of Canadian director William Fruet this time for the podcast. We start off with "The House By the Lake" from 1976 ( also known as "Death Weekend" ). Starring one of our favorites, Don Stroud, and with a great performance from Brenda Vaccaro, it is a very well-told tale of home invasion which does NOT disappoint. We follow that up with "Baker County U.S.A." ( also known as "Trapped" ) from 1982. Henry Silva turns in really strong performance as a villainous hillbilly who has gone off the deep end and NEEDS to be stopped! It is an outstanding bit of exploitation filmmaking, with great acting and mind-blowing stunts. After we talk about those two, we run down the other films we've been watching then we have a round-table discussion of the new film "Nobody" and ( spoiler alert ) we all LOVED it! Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. The year is 1976 and the nominees are: 1. Brenda Vaccaro - Once is Not Enough 2. Sylvia Miles - Farewell, My Lovely 3. Ronee Blakley - Nashville 4. Lily Tomlin - Nashville 5. Lee Grant - Shampoo In 1976 Lee Grant won the Oscar for Best Supporting actress for her role in Shampoo. This was Grant's third nomination and first (and only) win. Brenda Vaccaro won the Golden Globe for Once is Not Enough but I suspect she didn't win because the movie is, in today's standards, a campy (and incest/creepy) mess (although I highly recommend watching it's hilarious). Sylvia Miles was nominated for Farewell, My Lovely starring Robert Mitchum for only being on screen for 8 minutes. Ronee Blakley and the iconic Lily Tomlin were both first time nominees for Robert Altman's Nashville. Walter’s memoir, Beaming Up and Getting Off: Life Before and Beyond Star Trek, walks you through Walter’s growing up years as the son of Russian immigrants in 1940s Manhattan; his formative years as an actor with the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York (where Walter learned his craft alongside such classmates as Christopher Lloyd, Brenda Vaccaro, Jessica Walter, James Caan, and Dabney Coleman); his lifelong love of theatre; and his deep appreciation for the many opportunities that Star Trek continues to give him. Beaming Up and Getting Off is available in hardcover and as an eBook through Jacobs Brown Media Group. Want to advertise/sponsor our show? Is it Deep Throat? Brenda Vaccaro? Or did someone just have too many good cups of coffee? . 02:07 – ** MOONWATCH! ** It’s a Last Quarter Moon at 16.22 Virgo on a date that will live in infamy (Dec. 7). The Moon is on the Sabian symbol, “A volcano in eruption.” And the Sun sits on 17 Sagittarius, “An Easter sunrise service.” Virgo, an earth sign, can be surprisingly volatile when angry; some say the sign is associated with Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. The symbols taken together indicate something new that’s born of disaster and calamity. (Take note: This triggers the June 5, 2020 Lunar Eclipse point. Listen to Episode 28, Eclipses and Nodes: Why be Mean when you can be True? for more on that.) . 07:15 – The Sun at 18.11 Sagittarius squares Neptune in Pisces (Dec. 9), which speaks to a crisis of self-confidence and sense of purpose. How confident do you feel in who you are? . 08:49 – Four days later, Mercury follows in the Sun’s footsteps to square Neptune on the same degrees (Dec. 13). In this square, the cosmic messenger struggles to define the self. Have you been floundering with how to tell your story? . 09:44 – Mercury goes out of bounds (Dec. 12 – Jan. 4), all unsupervised and breaking the rules. If someone goes on a rant during this time, maybe just ignore them if you can! And, it might be helpful to think carefully before you speak! On the plus side, this is a good time to do innovative thinking. (To hear more about out-of-bounds planets – and to hear Jen’s lovely parents – listen to Episode 22, Taurus New Moon and Venus Gone Wild.) . 12:23 – For the Neptune square, the Sun and Mercury occupy 19 Sagittarius, “Pelicans moving their habitat.” And the god of the sea has been on 19 Pisces for the past 2 weeks, on “A master instructing his pupil.” It’s time to let go of the parts of the story that no longer serve us, as we still learn from Neptune, who tells us what those parts are. What needs releasing? Maybe the Buddhist concept of non-attachment could be helpful as you examine your inner narrative. . 14:29 – Venus, at 23.31 Scorpio, sextiles Pluto in Capricorn (Dec. 10), offering an opportunity to attract power to oneself. Venus is on the symbol “Crowds coming down the mountain to listen to one man,” which was also the degree of the recent Scorpio New Moon! Is a wish we made then going to be granted? (To hear more, scurry on over to Episode 55, Scorpio New Moon: Rolling in It!) . 16:32 – The Sun trines Mars at 19.39 Aries (Dec. 10), and then moves on to align with the South Node (Dec. 11) at 19.56 Sag – which sets us up for the Solar Eclipse that arrives on Dec. 14! Change may be incoming to help us let go of things! We are leaving one journey behind and entertaining options for the road going forward. . 17:53 – The Sabian symbols are both wintry: 20 Sag is “Men cutting through ice.” And 20 Aries is “A young girl feeding birds in winter.” Both speak of survival in harsh seasons. Is the blade related to ice fishing, creating ice sculptures, or ice skating? (And important info for you, friends: Fodor’s Travel placed the St. Paul Winter Carnival in its top spot of America’s coolest winter festivals, which is really just one more reason April should move to Minne-snow-ta; yes, a zamboni has a blade; Jen’s not sure how she forget the fabulous MN ice palaces?!; and finally, to hear April & Jen wax poetic about their favorite Bill Murray movie, visit Episode 10, Neptune and the Zen of Groundhog Day.) . 23:18 – Many thanks, dear listeners! If you’d like to support us at no cost to you, please kindly give us a 5-star rating, subscribe wherever you listen, and/or give us a happy review (and perhaps we will read it on air)! [VOTE FOR WHAT YEAR WE COVER IN 2021: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HPLW5SX] It's our first ever big superhero blockbuster! Only took us 99 episodes to get to one. This week, we're talking about Supergirl, released November 21st in 1984. It's pretty terrible, however we can't quite agree on if it's so-bad-it's-good or if it's just a really awful movie. He has appeared on television shows such as The Learning Channel, Geraldo Rivera, Hard Copy, Sightings, Encounters, The Other Side, Inside Edition, the BBC in London, Spanish Language programs, (Sabado Gigante-"EL Y ELLA"), and on many Network News broadcasts, ABC, NBC, CBS NEWS. At the end of the first season of "The Comeback," Valerie Cherish is on top of the world--or so she thinks. Her time in the spotlight fades out steadily--but not immediately. No matter how many times I sit down with Filmmaker Henry Jaglom, he’s always got a slew of new and stupendous stories to tell. This time he shared more than a few which he said he’s never told before, and they’re doozies. Raised by sophisticated, successful parents, Henry’s mother encouraged his love of theatre, nurturing his creative, empathetic nature, in contrast to his father’s keen business acumen. Showbiz called. First as a comedian with his pal, Ritchie Pryor, then as an actor (Gidget, The Flying Nun). He gave up comedy when Richard was funnier and acting when his friend________ scored the part he was up for. I can’t ruin it… it’s too good. He was asked by Bert Schneider to do an edit on Easy Rider. How that came to be, and who his editing partner was, is, well, great stuff. There are girlfriends Georgia Brown, Karen Black, Brenda Vaccaro, Tuesday Weld, Natalie Wood… a first told story about his meeting Dudley Moore and then introducing him to Tuesday. Meeting Orson Wells. How their friendship began, the films they did together, the meals they shared for years, recently transcribed in Henry’s, My Lunches with Orson. There’s Peter Bogdanovich, Paul Mazursky, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Jessica Walter, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, Bob Rafelson, Hal Prince, the impactful director, whose name slipped for the moment… winning an Oscar, producing anti-war shows with Jane Fonda, painting the sign for the Original Improv, sketching his friends before they were famous, and now getting a book deal for that art. His films, 21 of them. With a dream for 4 more, he explains why. And a book, 19 years in the writing, with an offer, made to anyone who comes up with the perfect title. If you love movies, and who doesn’t… and the people who make them, this time with Henry will thrill. Nope. We’re not watching the cheese-filled CBS show, we’re watching Helen Slater fight Faye Dunaway in a very strange film from the 80s. arkOS creator Jacob Cook and the talented artist & developer Jen Montes join the guys to review a piece of super hero history, Supergirl. Chris watched way too many documentaries like You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman to prepare for this show. Meanwhile, Jen watched Supergirl religiously as a child. Like Superman III, Supergirl was panned by reviewers. Also, it did not do well at the box office. Note the poster on the Wikipedia page. There’s something wrong with the Statue of Liberty. “Look at the British Peters!” Shouts Paul. Meaning O’Toole and Cook. Why is that Brenda Vaccaro looking so familiar? Chris live tweeted his viewing, the new version of show notes. Chris confuses who gets shrunk into who in Innerspace. And is this where Kara’s city is? Paul thinks the pocket universe is the inside of Zardoz’s stone head. Paul wonders if the spaceship flight is inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. Jacob thinks this can’t be anything but a space dildo. Chris thinks Faye Dunaway is wearing the Cybill Shepherd collection from Moonlighting. Jen says “the flying ballet” scene is to remind us that she’s a girl and we all cringe. What’s America like? Truckers. Matt Frewer delivers the worst dialogue as a trucker in a scene where Supergirl meets Max Headroom. We don’t like these writers very much. Jacob wonders why all the A&W product placement. Even on rapist truckers. Next on Law and Order: PZU (Phantom Zone Unit). Gardner guy is also the douchey guy from the first Die Hard film. Paul says there’s more magic in this film, but it is way more boring than Doctor Strange. Paul compares the lengthy flying scenes to the very long Star Trek: The Motion Picture. We have no budget so we’ve dressed all the bad guys like their from THX 1138. Is that a morlock in the Phantom Zone? Nope, it’s Peter O’Toole! Jacob suggests no one can replace Faye Dunaway in this film except maybe Tilda Swinton. Chris argues making the film even worse with Melanie Griffith. Jacob recommends that listeners watch Labyrinth. Then, he says we should review it on the show. Hmm… Jen says you need to check out Barbarella. Paul says he cannot make a better recommendation and jumps on this, well. Chris suggests Electric Booglaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. In the time since we recorded this, Jacob has launched an awesome way to get your arkOS on, with his new hosted service Skylark. Jen can be found on twitter or github. Thanks to both of them for all the laughs. It’s probably our longest show because we spent 24 minutes laughing. Stay tuned for next season. It’s right around the corner, by the time we post this!
