Erik Clapp of the mighty Cinema Force joins me to discuss John Frankenheimer's 1986 sleaze & suspense classic 52 Pick-Up. Adapted from Elmore Leonard's book by John Frankenheimer and Leonard himself, 52 Pick-Up is a tension & twist filled thriller that always keeps you guessing. This film also gives us one of the most iconic villains in cinema history, brought to life by the legendary John Glover. Also starring Roy Scheider, Ann-Margret, Clarence Williams III, Vanity & Robert Trebor, 52 Pick-Up was produced by Menahem Golan & Yoram Globus for Cannon Films - and strongly disliked by a pearl-clutching Gene Siskel. What more could a film-fan ask for? This is Part 1 of 3 - Part 2 features another taping with Erik, Part 3 is my chat with the legendary John Glover. Masters of The Universe (1987) is the ultimate 80s movie debate. Is it a sci-fi epic, or is it a glorious, awesomely bad disaster? Let's find out. When Mattel teamed up with Cannon Films—a studio legendary for running on sheer sweat, blood, and wild choices—to bring He-Man to the big screen, the results were unforgettable. In this episode, the Cinema Psychos are joined by Justin from Epic Film Guys to dissect a film that completely chose its own path We break down how a $22 million budget led the filmmakers to abandon Eternia for Earth, why Dolph Lundgren's live-action debut remains iconic, and how Frank Langella's legendary, scene-stealing performance as Skeletor single-handedly carried the movie. From Star Wars influences to Gwildor's strange obsession with Earthly fried chicken, we leave no stone unturned in this retro movie deep dive.

Cooper and Nolan are getting glittered up this week when they cut into THE APPLE! This enormous early 80s flop asks the question: what if the Cannon Films guys made a glam rock musical about Adam and Eve set in the futuristic 1990s? Somehow the answer is something stranger than you could possibly expect, and the guys have got themselves over a barrel trying to figure it out. The end result is a juicy conversation that's definitely worth tasting; this episode (featuring a beer from the Bad Apple Brewing Company) is one you'll want to sink your teeth into!
Was 10 to Midnight unfairly dismissed as exploitation trash, or is there more to this gritty Cannon Films cult classic than its reputation suggests? This week on Video Villa, we're joined by our special guest Joe from Movie Dumpster to take a fresh look at 10 to Midnight (1983), directed by J. Lee Thompson and starring the legendary Charles Bronson.Often labeled a “sleaze fest” upon its release, 10 to Midnight was criticized for its graphic violence, lurid subject matter, and exploitative tone. Many critics dismissed it as pure trash, while others have since embraced it as a fascinating blend of police thriller, slasher film, and Cannon Films excess. But has time been kind to this controversial cult favorite?Have you seen 10 to Midnight? Horror history gets iconic, aquatic, gothic, apocalyptic, and completely unhinged this week as This Week in Horror History travels through June 15–21 with motel terror, shark sequels, dark superhero nightmares, zombie blockbuster chaos, and one wild space-vampire cult classic that brings cosmic horror crashing down on Earth. This episode digs into a packed week of classic horror movies, cult horror, summer blockbusters, gothic comic-book horror, zombie disaster cinema, and 1980s Cannon Films madness, including the New York premiere of Psycho, the U.S. release of Jaws 2, the theatrical arrival of Batman Returns, the blockbuster zombie outbreak of World War Z, and the Deep-Cut Spotlight on Tobe Hooper's bizarre 1985 space vampire epic Lifeforce.Inside this episode:• Psycho rewrites the rules of horror moviegoing, turns the Bates Motel into a nightmare landmark, and makes one ordinary shower one of the most famous crime scenes in cinema.• Jaws 2 drags audiences back to Amity Island for more shark terror, seaside panic, and one of horror's most frustrating “nobody believes the guy who is right” sequel setups.• Batman Returns transforms Gotham into a twisted Christmas horror fairy tale full of sewer lairs, circus gangs, stitched leather, abandoned children, corporate monsters, Catwoman, and the Penguin.• World War Z reimagines the zombie apocalypse as global disaster cinema, with the undead moving less like slow corpses and more like a rushing human flood.• The Deep-Cut Spotlight goes to Lifeforce, Tobe Hooper's strange, ambitious, and deeply excessive Cannon Films cult classic about Halley's Comet, alien vampires, life-draining seduction, plague victims, and London falling apart under cosmic horror.Plus: a horror birthday roll featuring Courteney Cox, Laurie Metcalf, John Carl Buechler, and Nicole Kidman, a creepy look at how horror became a massive summer marketing event, and a weekly recommendation for Hammer's Dracula, also known as Horror of Dracula, starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. From Norman Bates and shark-infested beaches to Gotham monsters, zombie swarms, Halley's Comet, space vampires, Hammer horror, and Cannon Films insanity, this week proves horror history can be classic, blockbuster-sized, cult, strange, seductive, and absolutely impossible to ignore.

This extensive retrospective sets the stage for the episode's main event: a comprehensive, spoiler-filled discussion and review of the 2026 live-action Masters of the Universe feature film, analyzing how the blockbustesr reimagines Prince Adam's journey to becoming He-Man for modern audiences. You can follow us on X, Facebook and Instagram or if you would like to support us you can donate to our KoFi.
Send us Fan MailAs prefunk to next week's first Peter Yates episode, BULLITT, for his HACKS 4X4, we re-present our first Yates film, covered last year, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE. Coyle is so good and co-host Ken's befuddlement so severe that Yates also directed KRULL is what eventually led to this season of HACKS. Below is the sadly prescient original show notes for our Coyle episode written by show note genius, Thomas:The second 1x1 feature rounding out Season 14 and, chosen by Jack, the film is THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (1973). Directed by Peter Yates, whose career TGTPTU is unlikely to cover in a future 4x4 despite having Krull and Bullitt in his credits, TFOEC is an adaptation of George V. Higgins' inaugural novel and notable as a unromanticized depiction of crime in artistic response to The Godfather, the Puzo book and Coppola film each preceding, respectively, the book and movie versions of TFOEC by one year. Higgins would take issue with the book as his debut novel. The former deputy assistant attorney general claimed to have written and burned 14 novels over 17 years prior to TFOEC and would go on to author over 30 books, both fiction and nonfiction before his fatal heart attack in 1999, but none with the impact of his first. As seasonal guest host Jack points out, nearly all the dialogue in the film is as it is on the page, and the pages are dripping with dialogue that creates the setting and action for this ironic story of “friends” who double-cross and live less than glamorous lives as Irish mobsters and criminals in Boston. Yates populates the film with faces, faces that we don't see much anymore, distinct faces and every one telling a story, from the titular Coyle plated by Robert Mitchum who earlier in this life reluctantly left the assembly line to be an actor to actor Alex Rocco who starred as Moe Greene in The Godfather and helped Mitchum meet some of his old criminal friends whom Rocco had to leave behind after he (the actor Alex Rocco) was held for questioning in relation to the murder that kicked off the Boston Irish Gang War of the 1960s to James Tolkan before he'd lost his hair a decade prior to portraying Principal Strickland in the Back to the Future movies and Detective Hugh Lubic in the Cannon Films classic Masters of the Universe. For this episode, everyone did research: Jack and Thomas pair off for book report; Ryan covers the career of Mitchum; and Ken covers Yates and laments how now Hollywood lacks hacks as well as provides a new shaggy dog with The Pals of Charlie Brown. Make sure to wipe your prints clean on this one before listening with a friend. NEXT WEEK: Peter Yates, HACK, Episode #1: BULLITT. The students become the masters in this one. James and Nick use the cosmic key to rift into 1987 to check out what was going on in the universe of Cannon Films.
¡HE-MAN vuelve al videoclub! This week, we review Masters of the Universe (1987), Gary Goddard's sci-fi fantasy cult classic that blasts He-Man from Eternia straight into suburban Earth. Dolph Lundgren stars as the mighty He-Man, squaring off against Frank Langella's gloriously theatrical Skeletor in a battle for the cosmic key — and the fate of the universe. With its wild mix of swords, lasers, synth scores, and fish-out-of-water hijinks, this Cannon Films production reimagines the beloved Mattel toy line with a decidedly '80s flair. Is it By the Power of Grayskull or just a powerfully bad idea? In this episode of Missing Frames, Shawn and returning guest John Mills tackle one of the most gloriously baffling cult films of the 1980s: Masters of the Universe.Technically speaking? It's not a good movie.Emotionally speaking? They kind of love it anyway.Together, Shawn and John dive deep into the strange, earnest, deeply endearing world of Cannon Films' live-action adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and a gloriously committed Frank Langella as Skeletor. Along the way, they unpack the film's bizarre production history, its unmistakable “Cannon Films energy,” and why the movie's sincerity and lack of cynicism make it weirdly lovable. They also discuss that odd moment when a "bad" movie ends up being far more endearing and memorable than a competent one.By the Power of Grayskull, this one has the power.
Timecop (1994) Director: Peter HyamsCast: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Mia Sara, Ron Silver, Bruce McGillTime travel has been invented — and naturally, someone's already trying to weaponize it to steal an election. Welcome to Timecop, the 1994 JCVD action sci-fi spectacle where the mullets are questionable, the CGI is deeply committed to being bad, and the concept is actually way more interesting than it has any right to be.In this week's episode of Dewey Pod Monster, Sean and John strap in, hit 88 mph (or whatever the hell they use in this movie), and dive into one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's most enduring and most gloriously flawed films. In this episode, we discuss:Same Matter, Different Problems — The movie beats you over the head with its one rule of time travel — "the same matter can't occupy the same space at the same time" — exactly five zillion times, and somehow still makes a mess of it. We break down every paradox, plot hole, and moment where the logic completely waved goodbye and walked off a cliff.1994 Predicted Everything (Badly) — Ron Silver's corrupt senator wants to buy the presidency using time-stolen money and the power of television. In 2004. It's played as a sinister, far-fetched scheme. We... had some feelings about how eerily close to home that lands in 2025.The CGI Crimes of Our Time — From the rubber-faced time-warp tunnel sequences to the absolute train wreck of Ron Silver touching Ron Silver, this movie's visual effects are a special kind of ambitious failure. We discuss what a modern reboot could do with 30 extra years of technology — and why we'd actually show up for that.We Also Talked About:Body Count (1986) (Tubi)— Sean caught this Ruggero Deodato (of Cannibal Holocaust fame) Italian slasher set in an autumnal forest. Incoherent plot, Friday the 13th vibes that go completely off the rails, and a banger theme song by Claudio Simonetti that rivals Friday the 13th Part III. Charles Napier and David Hess show up. Available on Tubi if you're feeling adventurous.I'm Going to Be Famous (1983) (Ok.Ru) — A direct-to-video melodrama about aspiring actors gunning for their big break, featuring Dick Sargent (I Dream of Jeannie) as a theatrical director. It goes places. Specifically, it ends with a live on-air shooting and a farmer dad beaming with pride that his son is finally on TV. Sean does not heartily recommend it but cannot stop talking about it.Widow's Bay (Apple Tv)— A new Apple TV+ horror-comedy series starring Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason, The Americans) as the skeptical mayor of a cursed New England island. Sean is fully sold — it leans hard into the comedy and actually sticks the landing, which John argues is the only way a horror-comedy works. Eight episodes, dropping weekly.Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) (Youtube) — John calls this a high recommend for anyone who grew up watching late '70s and '80s action trash. A relentlessly entertaining documentary full of insane production stories, Golan and Globus being magnificently delusional, Tobe Hooper being surprisingly articulate, and more T&A than any non-pornographic documentary has any business containing. Pair with The Go-Go Boys but watch that one first. The Bride (2025) (Amazon) — Maggie Gyllenhaal directs this very loose Bride of Frankenstein retelling with Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. Looks gorgeous. Both leads are great. Opens five storylines and closes exactly zero of them satisfyingly. Goth Moulin Rouge meets Bonnie and Clyde vibes. John is somewhere in the middle, but would absolutely watch a sequel.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. We're proud members of the YouRun Podcast Network.

This week, The Good, The Bad, and The Sequel heads back into the jungle for Missing in Action 2: The Beginning — the prequel/sequel packed with prison camp explosions, one-man-army heroics, and peak Cannon Films energy. And yes… this was Jamie's Hall Pass pick, so you already know we're in for over-the-top '80s action insanity.Serving as a prequel to the original, Missing in Action 2 doubles down on everything you'd want from a Chuck Norris action movie: impossible escapes, evil villains, endless explosions, and enough slow-motion stares to power an entire franchise. We dig into everything, including:
Masters of the Universe (1987) Director: Gary Goddard Cast: Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Meg Foster, Billy BartyBy the power of Grayskull — and a budget that clearly ran out before they could build a decent set — we're diving headfirst into the gloriously broken 1987 Cannon Films fever dream that is Masters of the Universe. This week, John and Sean strap on their cosmic keys, dust off their He-Man nostalgia (well, Sean's nostalgia — John was busy being a Ghostbusters kid), and try to figure out what the hell they just watched. Oh, and we also talk about Hulk Hogan's new Netflix documentary, Real American, because apparently two massively jacked, possibly fictional characters for one episode wasn't enough. In this episode, we discuss:He-Mansplaining: A Franchise Left Stranded on Earth — Sean breaks down why this movie is basically unwatchable if you didn't grow up playing with Snake Mountain, and actively insulting if you did. No Prince Adam, no Battle Cat, no context — just Dolph Lundgren looking absolutely shredded and wandering around a deserted California town.Canon Fodder: How Golan-Globus Torched Their Own Studio — The behind-the-scenes disaster is almost more entertaining than the film itself. Budget cuts, three days of filming halted because they literally ran out of money, sets being torn down mid-shoot, and props that got recycled into Jean-Claude Van Damme's Cyborg. This is the beautiful chaos of late-80s Cannon Films in full self-destruction mode. The Puff Piece Problem: Hulk Hogan's WWE-Laundered Legacy — The guys dig into Netflix's Hulk Hogan: Real American and call out exactly what it is — a carefully sanitized, WWE-produced hagiography that glosses over the steroids, the racial slurs, the sex tape, and basically anything that would make Terry Bollea look like a human being with flaws. The first three episodes slap. The fourth one chickens out.Skeletor Deserved Better (And So Did We) — Frank Langella shows up, chews every piece of scenery in sight, and delivers the only performance worth watching in this entire movie. James Tolkan's accented cop is deeply out of place and completely hilarious. And poor Billy Barty is buried under pounds of prosthetics as Gwildor, a character so annoying he makes Jar Jar Binks look understated. We Also Talked About:Hulk Hogan: Real American (Netflix, 2026) — A four-episode WWE-produced docuseries covering Hogan's rise from fat kid playing bass in a band to the most recognizable figure in wrestling history. Great archival footage, Linda Hogan telling it surprisingly straight, Jesse Ventura being selectively complimentary, and Donald Trump somehow finding time in his schedule to appear on camera. The Bubba the Love Sponge/racial slur situation? Barely mentioned. The Many Lies of Hulk Hogan (Part 1) (Youtube)The Many Lies of Hulk Hogan (Part 2) (Youtube)I Come in Peace (1990, Dolph Lundgren) — Referenced as a recent pod pick, because apparently the guys can't get enough of Dolph.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. Will, John and Tom begin a series on CANNON FILMS, and pay tribute to CHUCK NORRIS. We cover the 1986 hijack action film with Lee Marvin (his final movie), Shelly Winters, George Kennedy, Martin Balsam and Robert Forrester. We talk about hijack movies, action stunts and Chuck Norris and his motorcycle with motor cannons. #ChuckNorris #Action #80s
Firewalker, another of Chuck Norris' many collaborations with Cannon Films, is exactly what you'd expect from a low budget Indiana Jones ripoff. The script is bad, the plot is ludicrous, and we never even get to see what the bad guy intends to do with his desired magical abilities. Despite all that, Firewalker does have its charms—most of which lie heavily on the back of Louis Gossett Jr. Predictably, in a film with Norris as its lead, emotive acting is in short supply. Without Gossett as his sidekick, Leo, and John Rhys-Davies doing a bizarre Foghorn Leghorn accent, this movie would've been quite the slog. Now, sit back, perform the last rites with a Seeing Colors from Mad Tree Brewing, and be wary of El Coyote! "Crime is the disease. Meet the Cure.""The strong arm of the law."Back in the spring and summer of 1986, those were among several snappy taglines for this highly anticipated action thriller starring Oscar-winner Sylvester Stallone as his direct follow-up to TWO smash successes lead by him the previous year: Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. THIS time, he was playing the ultimate cop named Marion Cobretti (nickname: Cobra) who was on the hunt around Los Angeles for a brutal serial killer (or serial killers?) named the Night Slasher played by veteran character Brian Thompson (The Terminator, Miracle Mile, The X-Files). This film was directed by George P. Cosmatos (Rambo, Tombstone) though apparently it ended up being co-directed by Stallone himself. There was much hype for this film when it was released in May 1986 though the reviews were pretty poor, mostly related to its very simplistic plot and extreme violence and.....it did ok at the box office. It wasn't the blockbuster which it was expected to be but the film made solid money at the worldwide box office. Since then, it has garnered an increasingly rabid cult following and is now looked upon as one of Sly's most quotable films....his answer to Dirty Harry. Let's see how it holds up forty years later and find out if.....THIS is where the law stops.....and HE starts. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Joining Tony Michas are Imprint Cast Family Members Paul Berriman and Ron Pettersson along with very special guests, Tone Egan, Film Historian Howard S. Berger and making his Imprint Cast debut, Danny Mitrovic. In this episode we do a deep dive discussion into the film Lifeforce, what impact the film had on us, director Tobe Hooper and the legendary production company, Cannon Films.Unfortunately due to an excessive amount of technical difficulties, the episode ends abruptly, so our sincerest apologies, but it shouldn't affect the enjoyment of this informative episode.
It's the third installment of "Misfired Cannons," and time to look at what happens when Cannon Films decides to work with one of Hollywood's biggest megastars. Sylvester Stallone was riding high off the success of both the Rocky and Rambo franchises in the mid-80s, so deciding to launch a new action franchise with the notoriously frugal and not always successful Cannon might have seemed a strange, unexpected move. So what sort of deal did Cannon offer Stallone to make it hard to resist? What other surprising 80s hit was Stallone originally attached to and oddly led to the creation of this film? Why is there controversy regarding who really directed the movie? How effective is the movie's blend of action and horror? We discuss all this and more, as we look at 1986's Cobra, pig! For the entire month of March, the guys at Not A Bomb are throwing it back to their old Movie Matchup format, pitting notorious box office bombs against each other in a battle for redemption. Two flops enter… only one survives. There can only be one! This week, Troy and Brad are strapping on their headbands, polishing their katana, and diving into a matchup that blends ‘80s martial‑arts mayhem with ‘90s neo‑samurai intensity. It's a clash of cultures, a duel of destinies, and—let's be honest, a celebration of that timeless cinematic art form: white‑guy karate. That's right, it's American Ninja vs. The Hunted, and the dojo has never been more chaotic.American Ninja (1985)Directed by Sam Firstenberg and starring Michael Dudikoff, Steve James, Judie Aronson, and Tadashi Yamashita, this Cannon Films classic is the apex of Reagan‑era martial‑arts absurdity. It's a movie where ninjas fall from trees like confetti, the U.S. Army apparently has no HR department, and the choreography proudly screams, “We taught this guy karate last week.” A cult favorite for anyone who believes the greatest martial art is confidence. The Hunted (1995)Directed by J.F. Lawton and starring Christopher Lambert, John Lone, Joan Chen, and Yoshio Harada, this sleek, bloody thriller drops a confused American businessman into a centuries‑old samurai feud. Lambert, armed with nothing but bewilderment and the fighting instincts of a man who once took a weekend aikido class. It's stylish, atmospheric, and surprisingly intense, proving that even in the ‘90s, Hollywood couldn't resist the allure of “What if a regular white guy accidentally became part of a ninja war?”The MatchupThis isn't just a duel—it's a full‑blown martial‑arts heavyweight fight. Cannon‑era ninja chaos vs. moody samurai noir. Dudikoff's “I guess I'm a ninja now” energy vs. Lambert's “I definitely did not sign up for this” panic. Troy and Brad break down which film kicks harder, which one stumbles, and which earns the coveted weekly crown. Expect shurikens, sword fights, questionable accents, and enough white‑guy karate to power a VHS dojo.We Want to Hear From YouGot a cinematic flop you want us to tackle? So you've developed a sequel to one of your recent "successes," but the legendary action star of the previous film has decided he doesn't want to do a follow-up. Are you supposed to scrap the whole thing? Not if you're Cannon Films, who knew better than to throw out all the work they had already done on a potential Invasion USA sequel, and instead decided to rework it into a new potential franchise starter of its own. "Misfired Cannons" continues as we look at 1986's Avenging Force, which saw Chuck Norris replaced with Cannon's own pet-project up-and-coming star, Michael Dudikoff. Here, Dudikoff takes over the role of Matt Hunter (or is maybe a totally different Matt Hunter?), this time taking on an an underground society of crazed right-wing extremists that likes to hunt men for sport. We discuss Dudikoff's place in the Cannon legacy, the movie's surprising-for-the-time-and-genre politics, the perpetual underutilization of co-star Steve James, and much more. In this episode we look at the 1989 Jean Claude Van Damme movie that thrust JCVD into the limelight of 90's action movie super stars while simultaneously hammering the final nail into the Golan Globus coffin. At one time a Hollywood powerhouse, Cannon Films flew too close to the sun and found themselves undone by their own machinery. Cyborg was the ultimate result of this failure, a movie thrown together from the unused costumes and sets from unproduced movies. In the not-too distant future, mankind is reduced to medieval state by some unspecified disaster and if that's not bad enough, the survivors are being killed off by a pandemic plague. Luckily, the last scientists on earth developed a cure but need some pieces of the puzzle brought back from New York City. They turn one of their own into a cyborg and send her to get it but evil pirates kill off her escort and strand her there. Lucky for her, here comes Gibson Rickenbacher, a slinger who can fight back against the pirates and get her back to her lab. It's a real dumb good time. We're celebrating 1980's Cannon action films with a retrospective on how important these movies were to our fandom then, and the nostalgic grasp they still have on us today. On this episode we discuss Jean-Claude Van Damme's cult classic movie, BLOODSPORT (1988). Bloodsport is a 1988 American martial arts film directed by Newt Arnold and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, with a supporting cast of Leah Ayres, Donald Gibb, Roy Chiao, Norman Burton, Forest Whitaker, and Bolo Yeung. The film centers on Frank Dux (Van Damme), a United States Army captain and ninjutsu practitioner who competes in an underground full-contact martial arts tournament called the Kumite in Hong Kong. Based on Dux's real-life claims, the film was marketed as a true story. It was one of Van Damme's first lead roles and showcased his abilities, launching his career as a mainstream action star. We will also discuss the films 1980's Cannon Films Famous Producers, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. We also mention the documentaries about them, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014), and The Go-Go Boys: The Inside Story of Cannon Films (2014). For film fans of the '80s, one studio was synonymous with over-the-top action, wild premises, and low to mid-budget insanity. Cannon Films delivered a massive output of video store staples and cable classics, and today are looked back on nostalgically as an entertaining alternative to the "big" studio fare of the era. But Cannon certainly had at least one thing in common with the major studios - their fare share of failed franchise starters. So we're devoting two months to the studio's "Misfired Cannons." First up, a look at the 1985 Chuck Norris vehicle Invasion USA, which sees the denim-clad action icon single-handily take on an army of foreign terrorists invading the United States. It might not be the "best '80s action movie," but it is arguably the "most '80s action movie." But we couldn't discuss such a crazy cult-classic alone, so for this discussion we're joined by Bryan Kristopowitz, author of the "Gratuitous B-Movie Column" on the 411mania website, and the recently published book, Not Coming to a Theater Near You!: 50 Great Direct-to-Video Action Flicks of the Early 2000s. This week we step back into the fighting arena with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the film that gave him his big break with Bloodsport. Journey with us as we discuss this wild tournament filled with so many unique fighters while also talking about Cannon Films. Is this an underrated action movie gem or is it to schlocky for its own good? So pour some rye, do the splits while overlooking Hong Kong, and get ready for the Kumite! Kumite! Kumite! Cheers!
When evil terrorists have hijacked a passenger plane flying through Europe filled with mostly Americans and they're headed towards Beirut...who are you gonna call? The Delta Force! Yup smack in the middle of a now legendary run of B-Grade genre films (Missing In Action, Breakin', Cobra), Cannon Films decided to make a statement with this star-studded political action thriller starring Chuck Norris (The Way of the Dragon, Code of Silence, Walker Texas Ranger) and the late, great Lee Marvin (Cat Ballou, The Dirty Dozen) who lead this titular elite squad of warriors to the rescue. Not only that but one half of the Israeli producing duo which ran Cannon - Menahem Golan (Over the Top, Enter the Ninja, The Apple) - actually decided to direct it himself. ;) When first released amidst a true glut of military-themed action films in '86, this was only a middling success but since then, it has garned a devoted cult following thanks to it likely overqualifed cast filled with former Oscar-winners (Marvin, Martin Balsam, George Kennedy, Shelly Winters) and an EXTREMELY catchy theme song created by Alan Silvestri! Well that and we get to see Norris' McCoy dispatch bad guys with missiles from his motorcycle....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
