This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Connor back on the podcast to discuss the 1985 teen drama The Legend of Billie Jean. That's right, Dana finally gets her wish to do a movie she actually knows and likes. Helen Slater and Christian Slater (surprisingly no relation) play siblings on the run because FAIR IS FAIR!! Lisa Simpson tags along and drops an F Bomb, which is worth the price of admission alone. Billie Jean becomes a cult hero to the youth of Texas as they flee across the state avoiding the police and parents, that are WAY too involved with the police's official business. This was a fun one to discuss. Enjoy the podcast.

The winner of our recent Listener Choice Lottery was our friend Monique (of Monique's Movie Madness, @moniques_movie_madness on TikTok). Her movie? The Legend of Billie Jean (1985). Not only had neither of us ever seen this movie, we'd barely even heard of it. But boy is it a hidden gem. Pure sleazy '80s goodness. Helen Slater plays our hero: Billie Jean, a 17-year-old resident of Corpus Christi, Texas. The year is 1985, and she's going up against the many injustices life throws at her, with the help of her spunky younger brother Binx (Christian Slater), the live-action Lisa Simpson (Yeardley Smith), and a hunky movie nerd named Lloyd (Keith Gordon). Spoiler alert: She wins. But the real winner is YOU, the viewing public. Bonus video: We each name an actor we just can't stand. Who can't you stand?? Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. "Fair is fair!" Billie Jean Davy: Buzzcut rebel. Voice of a generation. Cute girl. Helen Slater led a young cast through a cross-Texas odyssey in 1985's The Legend of Billie Jean. Yes, the brazenly named flick didn't quite live up to its title upon release, but went on to cut out a name for itself on cable and VHS. But now, decades later, is $608 even worth the road trip in this economy? Is Billie Jean a reluctant hero or just a clumsy fugitive? And, are we sure Christian Slater isn't related to Helen? What's that in the sky? It's 1984's: Supergirl! Listen along as we discuss Helen Slater's turn as the Man of Steel's cousin, the obsessiveness of Fay Dunaway's evil sorceress, and all the ways this movie shows that romance can go wrong. Grab a cape, soak up some rays and listen along!

"The Legend of Billie Jean" had a little something for each Shat The Movies host. Gene got his Honda Elite scooter. Ash got her Christian Slater. And Big D got Helen Slater with no bra. But that's not why listener BreAnn M. commissioned this 1985 coming-of-age film. For her, "The Legend of Billie Jean" was an inspiration, a gateway to feminism and a radical view of what kids could do. In this episode, the Shat Crew debates whether all Gulf Coast states are the same, whether men are as bad as the movie makes them out to be and whether teens are a powerful force or apathetic losers. Gene offers some tips on how to make a powerful video for the media. Ash rails against the "these darn kids" messaging of '80s films. And Big D describes what would really happen to Billie Jean and her gang in the real world. Other topics range from the accuracy of police snipers to the plausibility of life in Vermont. On the ninth day of Pitts-mas, a small child with spider legs gave to me, HAPPY TOGETHER Patrick Dempsey, before his McDreamy days, when he was a dork heartthrob of the the 80s, made this early 90s rom-com with Billie Jean herself, Helen Slater. He's a baby boy writer who's gone off to college. She's a free spirit actor who lied on her roommate sheet and now they live together. Will shenanigans occur? Will they fall in love? Did Jason cry while watching this movie on TV back when he was 12? Did Jules punch a hole in his laptop and start puking into it because this is such a dreadful film? Who knows? But? Brad Pitt is in this. Rate, review, subscribe, call, email and get on that back catalog where we go through Billy Crudup, Ray Liotta, Keith Gordon, Robert Longstreet and Radha Mitchell. The Spandex King of L.A. is delighted when his wife is kidnapped by two bumbling criminals, less so when he's blackmailed by two even more incompent criminals. It's "The Ransom of Red Chief" in high 1980s Memphis-Milano decor. Starring Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, Anita Morris, and Bill Pullman. Directed by Jim Abrams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. Written by Dale Launer.
Originally a Patreon special, Gabe and Connor defend SUPERGIRL, which bombed so horribly with critics and audiences that it derailed plans for a cinematic universe. Apparently, audiences weren't too keen on Faye Dunaway's ultra-campy villain or the bizarre storyline. Even the presence of venerated actors like Peter O'Toole couldn't save this movie, which has remained one of the most infamous comic book adaptations. But after Helen Slater's "cameo" in THE FLASH, it's time to look back at this supposed disaster and asks the hard questions like: does this have more egregious product placement than MAN OF STEEL? Is this movie a Jim Henson production with actors instead of puppets? Did Helen Slater have potential as Kara? And most importantly, why do people like it when Robocop hits assaulters in the groin... but not when Supergirl does it?

You've heard of the DCEU, but for the next three months, we're examining the "DC..P-U." That's right - we're looking at nearly 40 years' worth of failed DC superhero franchise starters. Kicking things off is 1984's Supergirl, a spin-off of the popular Christopher Reeve Superman series, but one so troubled and misguided that DC Comics parent company Warner Bros. washed their hands of it after financing it, and let another company altogether release it. Starring an unknown-at-the-time Helen Slater as Superman's titular cousin, and cinema icon Faye Dunaway as the evil witch Selena, Supergirl is one of Hollywood's first female-led comic book movies...which would probably be more impressive if the story didn't basically boil down to two women fighting over a man. I'm joined by Nashville's leading film critic, curator and connoisseur Jason Shawhan to discuss THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN. An overtly feminist, covertly queer cult classic from 1985 that deftly explores America's rampant classist bias, unbridled misogyny, protest movements dissolving into marketing opportunities, modern technology's role in amplifying voices of the devalued underclass, the benefits and dangers of our fame-obsessed world and so much more - all wrapped in a a shiny, gorgeously photographed container. Generally dismissed by critics and audiences alike upon initial release, THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN is a true cult classic, beloved by everyone who resonated with another gem of a film discovered by most viewers via home video and cable. Fabulous performances from Helen Slater, Peter Coyote, Keith Gordon, Dean Stockwell and Yeardly Smith (AKA the voice of Bart Simpson and a brilliant score (Pat Benetar's iconic "Invincible" was written expressly for BILLE JEAN and produced by our friend Mike Chapman), this movie's comment on America is as relevant today was it was upon original release .For more Jason Shawhan: https://x.com/jshawhan?s=21&t=2TXy7cSLOHZN-Ef4khov0A http://rebirthoftheflesh.blogspot.com/ Jason & Sam Inglis host FEARLESS PRETENDER- The Only Podcast That Provides Extensive Analysis of Every-Single Film & Television Show Featuring Jennifer Jason-Leigh. https://open.spotify.com/show/17u9DSmsiByQ56LijyERoo Here my guest spot on the episode devoted to the bizarro Rodney Dangerfield classic EASY MONEY https://open.spotify.com/episode/5WVJsIaVmRSx4HfxjtZvm1?si=IRopJVbdQYWytOJ4tWXIGg Participate in future Movie Clubs, support this show and make your life complete by heading to https://www.patreon.com/CraigAndFriends and signing up now! Helen Slater (Supergirl, The Legend of Billie Jean) joins us this week to talk about her experience being thrust into the iconic role of Supergirl at 18 years old and the many different pressures and difficulties that came along with it. Helen was so open this week - she gets candid about her desire to act and the deep fulfillment that she receives in studying mythology. Talented actor looks back at her turn as Supergirl and also how she has voiced and starred as other characters in the DC Universe. Recorded at SDCC.
In 1978, we were one year removed from believing a war could happen in space. Yet little did we know, we were about to be made to believe a man could fly. Listen in as the original gang of Garrett, Matt, and Adam get back together to talk about the cinematic iterations of Garrett's favorite comic book character, Superman. Sure, they already spoke about the DCEU last year. But they did not discuss where it all began, and how we got to where it eventually ended up. In this episode the boys all discuss their personal relationships with the character, as well as all the behind the scenes drama that went with director Richard Donner's constant fight to make his vision of Superman shown. And, of course, they go on to review 1978's Superman The Movie. Continue coming back as we are going to cover the Christopher Reeve starring films this month, take a two month break from the character, and then come back to talk about the much talked about Superman Returns, Man of Steel, and a revisit of Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice. As well as the less discussed 1984 Helen Slater starring Supergirl.
We are fast approaching the second movie adaptation of Supergirl with Sasha Calle appearing in The Flash 2023. But before Sasha Calle and even Laura Vandervoort from Smallville and Melissa Benoist in the Arrowverse there was the 1984 movie. Set in the Christopher Reeve Superman universe it sees Helen Slater take on the role in a truely bizarre adventure which is entirely divorced from reality and logic. Is it good? No. Is it weird? It's a new year and we're hitting the ground running as we talk about one of the most infamous superhero missteps in the history of comic book movies. Helen Slater, in her first feature film role, dons the blue and red in order to take on Faye Dunaway as they both vie for the heart of that one guy from Die Hard. It's Supergirl on this week's episode of They Called This a Movie. Join us as we discuss the wild set pieces, the vaguely sexist plot, and a title sequence that cost way too much money in 1984. Zo had to go on a wild west excursion without his trusty sidekick Zack, but, luckily, Zo was able to bring along Harvey Laguerre, host of the Men Are The P.R.I.Z.E. and Love Is Black podcasts, to help him get past his mid life crisis and team up with like minded folks who are desperate to recapture their past glory. Horseback riding, rustling cattle, and sleeping under the stars will help these people get their mojo back. Obviously, there are some hijinks on the way; what do you expect when the open planes of the Midwest is set upon by City Slickers? On this week's episode, the 2022 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza—a period of time in the WHM schedule where they drop episodes exclusively on bigger, more well-known titles that may or may not have been released in the summer because the release date is actually irrelevant to the title of the series—kicks off with an episode on America's favorite midlife crisis drama/family western comedy, City Slickers! In a sea of good performances, how fantastic is Daniel Stern in this movie? Was Palance's Oscar win for his portrayal of Curly actually a make-good for a role earlier in his career? And what is with these boomers complaining about being able to take luxurious, high-priced vacations each and every year? PLUS: What's the fantasy order of your human centipede made out of Comic Relief hosts? City Slickers stars Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby, Jack Palance, Helen Slater, Patricia Wettig, Noble Willingham, Tracey Walter, Josh Mostel, David Paymer, Bill Henderson, Jeffrey Tambor, Phill Lewis, and Yeardley Smith; directed by Ron Underwood.
