First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 21st 2023 Long time listeners to VISION ON SOUND will already be aware that PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, our returning guest on this week's edition, is a very avid fan of the TV detective series BERGERAC, and, whilst he has mentioned this from time-to-time on his appearances, we realised that we'd never had a sit down to just talk about that show. So this week we decided to rectify that omission, and for the next hour we have a nice little chat about what it is about that particular cop show, mostly set on Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, which he found appealing enough to ensure that he not only has the complete series on his shelves so that he can watch it whenever the mood catches him, but also that he has an emergency backup set of BERGERAC just in case the first goes wrong, and yet another set – albeit one featuring inferior edits of the programmes – stashed in another place in case the first two can't be accessed. Think of it as being a bit like prepping for archive TV enthusiasts. The series BERGERAC was first made and broadcast by the BBC in 1981, and continued to make regular appearances in the schedules for more than a decade, finally signing off, nine series, and eighty-seven episodes later on Boxing Day, 1991, and seems slightly unusual nowadays for not being a detective series based around characters adapted from a series of novels. BERGERAC was created by ROBERT BANKS STEWART, as is rather well known, as a replacement for his previous series SHOESTRING which came to a sudden abrupt end, and left the BBC looking around for a similar but different Detective series to fill its place in the schedules, and, BERGERAC must be considered to be a very successful solution to a rather interesting problem. The series starred JOHN NETTLES as JIM BERGERAC, a detective with a troubled past, TERENCE ALEXANDER as his troublesome ex-father in law CHARLIE HUNGERFORD, and SEAN ARNOLD as his boss BARNEY CROZIER at the newly formed “BUREAU DES ETRANGES” on the Channel Islands, alongside several glamorous women like CECILE PAOLI, CELIA IMRIE, LOUISE JAMESON, THERESE LIOTARD, DEBORAH GRANT and LISA GODDARD, who seemed to find Jim irresistibly attractive, sometimes for several seasons in lead and guest roles, alongside a whole host of exactly the sort of character actors that the likes of viewers like me enjoy spotting in these kinds of shows. BERGERAC made the most of its picturesque JERSEY locations, and the vintage 1947 burgundy-coloured TRIUMPH ROADSTER Jim drove, to delight audiences across the 1980s, and PAUL has very fond memories of growing up watching this series, not least because of the childhood holidays he spent on the island. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
The federal government promised to reimburse U.S. communication companies to “rip and replace” Chinese-made equipment from their networks. But Congress has yet to provide adequate funding, creating an environment of unusually high risk and uncertainty for rural operators. In this episode, CoBank's Jeff Johnston speaks with Carri Bennett, a communications policy expert with the Rural Wireless Association and partner at Womble Bond Dickinson, and John Nettles, president of Pine Belt Wireless.
The podcasters are almost lost for words after Warrington’s Headingley clusterfuck performance, and Sam’s stats only back up the team’s shambolic away form. Steve Price continues to be confused by past & present tense, as well as creating a new word for the English language. Chris Hill enters Mastermind with a specialist subject of answering RL questions the question before last. Rob’s Hadron Decider robot has developed an infatuation for the actor John Nettles, but still has time to cast his quantum chip over the goings-on at Widnes with Patton and Latu. Dennis explains the benefits of the players’ group adopting the cognitive dissonance theory, before Daniel pulls down our very own marquee.
In this episode CJ sits down with a very distinguished guest John Nettles. John spend over 30 years in US army Special Forces, US government, and private training. John has expertise in both long range and CQB application. You won't want to miss what a man who served decades in SOF, and what he thinks about Instagram, gunbunnies, and shooting competition. John served in special operations since the early 1990's and has seen equipment evolve and shares his thoughts on modern red dots on pistols. Most importantly John talks about how he has dealt with PTS and separation, and ways to stay healthy. Rarely does someone with the experience that John Nettles has come along, tune in and see what he thinks about many of the common Empty Brass topics. John Nettles Is the type of man that I’ve always only heard stories about... The gentleman that I know and look up to would say things like, “John Nettles says this or does it this way” and so we would often adopt those principles or aim to implement those tactics. There are many different types of agents in this game who do what they do for any number of colorful, honorable, dishonorable, immature and/or noble reasons but John has his own reasons for doing the things he’s done over his lifetime which he sums up in this interview simply as, “doing the right thing.” Maybe Leonardo da Vinci was right when he said that, “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” John is also the type of man who has enough field experience on such a wide variety of principles, techniques, and tactics that it was almost paralyzing trying to figure out what exactly to ask him in an interview. For these reasons I chose to aim at his core, to try and understand what exactly it is that drives a man to a life of warrior ship. I aimed to understand the foundation that he stands on inner psychically that has given him the bravery and grace to go into the belly of the beast repeatedly for over three decades. I’m not sure if I got it but I definitely learned lots. He’s not just some cool guy from Instagram or flavor of the month among the myriad of shooting stars in the “tacttardosphere.” He’s the guy you don’t notice and nudge your way past in the grocery store, who doesn’t say anything to you because he knows who he is on the inside in the dirt under his fingernails that day comes from some distant third world country where he was just snatching the souls from evil men and delivering the innocent back into the hands of those they love, probably less than only 18 hours ago. I learned a lot from this interview and I believe it has much to give the world, the private security community, warriors and Americans alike. It’s with honor that I bring this conversation to light. JOHN NETTLES - Background John Nettles has over 29 years of Military Special Operations experience through his involvement with the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets) and the U.S. Government. He has multiple combat deployments from the first Gulf War, West Africa to recent multiple tours in each theater of Iraq (OIF/OND) and Afghanistan(OEF). John was an Instructor with the U.S. Army Special Forces Sniper Course Level II (SOTIC) as well as the Senior Instructor with the U.S. Special Forces Close Quarters Battle Course (SFAUC). He has trained thousands of US and foreign Special Operations Forces members in marksmanship and tactical skill sets. John has been an Adviser to multiple Special Operations Units within U.S. Special Operations Command as well as the Adviser to the New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS), advising and training in all aspects of Special Operations from tactical to national level areas. When people think of hard edged gritty world renowned police drama they think of one name: Bergerac. When Mr Paul and Mr Ash think of Bergerac they think of questionable accents, Geoff Capes, and the mysterious allure of the enigma that is John Nettles. Oh, and a giant invisible killer bird. Probably.
