What happens when political changes collide with tax enforcement? In this revealing conversation, former IRS revenue agent Jeff Johnson shares his firsthand account of being caught in the recent mass layoffs at the IRS. Having just completed seven months of intensive training, Jeff was among 7,000 probationary employees suddenly terminated as part of a broader federal workforce reduction initiative.Jeff pulls back the curtain on the agency's antiquated systems—including 1960s COBOL programming and cryptic green screens that revenue agents must master—and explains why these cuts could mean fewer audits of non-compliant taxpayers. You'll hear how experienced professionals who left established careers to serve at the IRS were dismissed with minimal notice and why this might be just the beginning of a much more significant reduction targeting up to half of the agency's 90,000 workforce.Meet Our Guest, Jeff JohnstonLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jon-jeffery-johnston-6812875Need CPE?Get CPE for listening to podcasts with Earmark: https://earmarkcpe.comSubscribe to the Earmark Podcast: https://podcast.earmarkcpe.comGet in TouchThanks for listening and the great reviews! Brightn, a Mental-Wellness app for Young Adults that targets 3 areas of Optimal Mental Wellness with Jeff Johnston In Jeff's words: Brightn wasn't a company I planned to start. While managing my investment firm and a happy family, my life turned upside down when my oldest son, Seth, died from Fentanyl poisoning in 2016, followed by my wife Prudence's battle with alcohol. My journey through grief led me to realize that the true enemy was the mental health crisis affecting millions. Jeff's keynote presentations inspire, educate, and transform. Drawing from his expertise in mental wellness, he delivers impactful talks on personal and professional growth, resilience, and achieving a purposeful life. Attendees leave with actionable insights to enhance their well-being and boost productivity in their personal and professional lives. The Book: On October 4, 2016, Jeff lost his son, Seth, age 23, to fentanyl poisoning. Recognizing his own addictions to alcohol and gambling, Jeff took a stand on December 24, 2017, and committed himself mental health advocacy. He launched The Undeterred Podcast in 2020 and founded The Choices Network, a nonprofit that promotes and encourages healthy lifestyle choices for teens and young adults. In September of 2020, he published his first book, This One's For You: An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death, and Meaning. But he wasn't finished. On June 29, 2021, Jeff lost his wife, Prudence, age 46, to alcoholism. Still undeterred and determined, on May 12th, 2022, he embarked on The Living Undeterred Tour, a 95-day, 20,000-mile odyssey across the United States to share stories and to find more ways to make a difference in people's lives. In September of 2023, he launched Brightn, a mental-wellness app for young adults that targets three areas of optimal mental wellness — health, wealth, and purpose. The app is named for Brighton, Seth's daughter, who was born three weeks after Seth died. Jeff sold the investment company he founded at age 23 to focus on Brightn. He's also part-owner of Tribute Kicks, a retail store and vintage clothing company in Coralville, Iowa, with his middle son, Ian. A percentage of the profits are donated to area mental wellness organizations. Jeff lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with his two sons, Ian and Roman. On October 4, 2016, Jeff Johnston received the phone call that is every parent's worst nightmare. In a single moment, their lives had changed forever. This One's For You is the story of one family's struggle through addiction and their journey to find inspiration and meaning in the loss of a son & brother. Heroin may have taken Seth at the young age of 23, but it wasn't going to take the opportunity to continue his story. Were there warning signs with Seth we missed? Was the outcome preventable? Riddled with these questions, Johnston began a journey of self-evolution as he began to understand & shed light on substance abuse, addiction, and the Opioid epidemic. In the face of tragedy, Johnston and his family were able to turn their love of golf into a platform to bring awareness and honor Seth's memory. Death, however inevitable, can be a springboard into a realm of compassion and goodwill for those it leaves behind. It is a poignant reminder of how brief the moments we have can truly be. This One's For You is a dedication to every lost soul taken by the choke hold of addiction and a lifeline of hope to those who need the inspiration to fight the battle every day. PiZetta Media: Podcast with a Cause

In this interview, Jeff Johnston, CEO and founder of Brightn, shares his deeply moving and transformative journey that inspired the creation of his mental wellness initiative. Jeff opens up about his life-changing moments, from personal success as an investment firm owner to profound loss when he lost his son, Seth, to fentanyl poisoning, followed by the passing of his wife due to alcoholism. These heartbreaking events motivated Jeff to create Brightn, an app aimed at empowering youth with mental wellness tools, rather than resorting to labels and prescriptions. Jeff's vulnerability and determination to rise from tragedy illustrate the power of resilience and a purpose-driven mission to bring change to others who are struggling. Throughout the interview with Michael VanZetta, Jeff shares powerful insights into the complexities of grief, addiction, and mental health, reflecting on how society handles these challenges, particularly among young people. He emphasizes the importance of support systems, authentic conversations, and building community connections. Jeff's dedication to helping others, especially through tools like Brightn and his podcast, reflects a relentless desire to change the narrative around mental health, offering hope and empowerment instead of stigma and despair. His journey serves as a powerful reminder of how pain, when reframed, can lead to lasting, positive impact on the world.

Prior to that day, Jeff was living the American Dream. He had a great family, was a successful entrepreneur running a financial services firm in Iowa, and was seemingly coasting through life. On the morning of October 4, 2016, Jeff received the phone call that is every parent's worst nightmare. His oldest son, Seth, had died from fentanyl poisoning. He was 23 years old.  Jeff soon realized that he had two options. He could go down a road of anger and despair and become bitter, or he could use his situation as motivation to become better. He chose the latter. Jeff decided to take a step back from his career as a financial advisor and focus his attention on making a difference. He became an advocate for bringing awareness to substance use and addiction in teens & young adults. He began speaking at high schools and community events and joined the board of a local treatment facility that Seth spent time at before his death.  In 2020, Jeff founded a non-profit, the Living Undeterred Project, to change the narrative on mental health & substance use disorder. That same year, he wrote his first book, “This One's For You: An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death, and Meaning,” and started the Living Undeterred Podcast. In 2021, the project got even more personal for Jeff when he lost his wife, Prudence, to alcoholism. He is currently working on a new mental health project, Brightn, geared toward Gen Z.

On October 4, 2016, the trajectory of Jeff's life changed with one phone call. Prior to that day, Jeff was living the American Dream. He had a great family, was a successful entrepreneur running a financial services firm in Iowa, and was seemingly coasting through life. The morning of October 4, 2016 Jeff received the phone call that is every parent's worst nightmare. His oldest son, Seth, had died from fentanyl poisoning. He was 23 years old. Jeff soon realized that he had two options. He could go down a road of anger and despair and become bitter, or he could use his situation as motivation to become better. He chose the latter. Jeff decided to take a step back from his career as a financial advisor and focus his attention toward making a difference. He became an advocate for bringing awareness to substance use and addiction in teens & young adults. He began speaking at high schools and community events, and joined the board of a local treatment facility that Seth spent time at before his death. In 2020, Jeff founded his own non-profit, Choices Network, Ltd. dedicated to educating kids, parents, teachers & coaches on the importance of making positive choices. That same year, he wrote his first book, “This One's For You: An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death and Meaning” and started the Living Undeterred Project. Jeff is currently organizing the Living Undeterred Tour with the goal of building a network of contacts and resources to help develop alternative solutions to the mental health and addiction crises. Launching into adulthood, plus Todd Friel on how to know if you're a true Christian, and the pressure to use preferred pronouns. Featured musical artist: Daniel Bashta ( https://www.danielbashta.com/welcome ) Roundtable: Welcome to Adulthood Do you feel like everyone else is independent: paying their bills, doing their taxes, making decisions and just generally “adulting”? It's easy to feel left behind or experience anxiety around the many changes you must navigate in this season. Some of it is “life stuff” like the above. Some of it is relational — learning how to let go of your parents, make friends and find community. Our guests share the ups and downs of their own adulthood journeys and give encouragement for making the transition a smooth and (mostly) successful one. Culture: A Question of Salvation News flash: Just because you walked an aisle or prayed a prayer doesn't mean you're saved. So what does? All of us have questioned our salvation at one time or another, so can we really be sure? Evangelist and apologist Todd Friel shows how the prosperity gospel, “get out of hell free” gospel, churchgoer gospel and other false gospels lull people into complacency, yet Scripture itself is clear on what it means to be saved. Get ready for an insightful and empowering conversation on what matters most when it comes to salvation and eternity. As a Christian, is it lying or loving to address someone with their preferred pronouns — even if they don't align with their biological sex? When asked to declare pronouns at work, school or on social media, how should we respond? Family and gender analyst Jeff Johnston weighs in.
