The Front to the Films podcast is thrilled to announce our latest episode featuring a conversation with Georges Strachan-Heyes, retired British Army officer and Director of Operations for the UK and NATO at Onebrief. In this episode, hosted by Colonel Tom Rendall (USA, Ret.), Georges brings his exceptional insights in discussing The World War II Foundation's newest documentary, Dad's Secret War: France 1944. This gripping documentary, based on Scholars of Mayhem by Daniel C. Guiet and Timothy K. Smith, chronicles the daring World War II missions of Jean Claude Guiet, who served with Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE) and America's Office of Strategic Services (OSS). His covert operations helped arm and organize the French Resistance in Nazi-occupied France following D-Day, ultimately shaping the Allied breakthrough in Europe. Jean Claude's “Salesman II” circuit team played a vital role in holding back German reinforcements from Normandy, a critical part of the Allied advance. As Georges recounts, Guiet's story adds a powerful chapter to the narrative of WWII, bringing to light the real risks and sacrifices made by the unsung agents operating behind enemy lines. On September 10, 2024, the Foundation held a special advance screening of Dad's Secret War at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg). It was a memorable evening attended by 150 senior active and retired members of the Special Operations and Airborne communities, along with their families. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees deeply moved by this untold story of heroism and resilience. Georges Strachan-Heyes, who served as the keynote speaker, delivered exceptional remarks that resonated with the entire audience. His speech, which was so captivating and insightful that it left the room spellbound, delved into the film's themes and explored how covert actions by the OSS and SOE transformed the course of WWII. His remarks were so impactful that we immediately invited him to share more on Front to the Films. In this podcast episode, airing as a lead-up to the formal premiere of Dad's Secret War at the French Embassy in Washington, DC, on November 14, Georges joins Colonel Rendall to discuss the importance of bringing this story to the screen. He touches on themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the meticulous training and bravery required of SOE agents. Georges also reflects on the documentary's production, which involved collaboration with the Newhouse School, offering students a hands-on opportunity to explore WWII history and contribute to historical storytelling as part of The World War II Foundation's Doccumentary, Film, Photography and History Program. Their involvement reinforces the film's dual purpose: honoring the sacrifices of WWII veterans while educating future generations on the critical lessons of the past. Following its Embassy premiere, Dad's Secret War: France 1944 will be aired nationwide on nearly 300 American Public Television channels. The film, narrated by Kevin Bacon, invites viewers into the life of Jean Claude Guiet and his comrades, revealing the profound human and historical impact of their missions in occupied France. Georges and Colonel Rendall's conversation serves as an enlightening primer for the documentary, giving listeners a rare perspective on the bravery and complexities of war, and how these untold stories resonate in today's world. Join us for this extraordinary episode of Front to the Films, where we honor those who lived and served in the shadows, and look forward to the story's reach on a national scale. This conversation is both an introduction to the documentary as well as a fitting tribute to the courage that defined the Greatest Generation.

As a child in eastern France, Jacques Pépin learned never to waste a scrap of food. Raised during and after the rationing of WWII, he watched closely as his mother, Jeanette, built a successful career as a restaurateur by the skin of her teeth (and her chickens). Today, Jacques is a beloved celebrity chef. And yet he's never forgotten what he knows about keeping food, and life delicious, without squandering ingredients or time. Jacques sits down with Host Claudia Hanna to explain how what he calls “miserly” cooking became his philosophy and his superpower. He shares how this approach has served him in the humblest, and the highest, of kitchens, and how you can apply it in yours, too. Plus – over Jacques' long career, there have been some pretty radical changes in people's attitudes about food waste. Food Historian Helen Veit joins us to explain why what we eat, and what we throw away, has changed so much in just a few generations. Hosted by Claudia Hanna Episode Guests: Jacques Pépin is a chef, author, television personality, educator, and artist, and has starred in twelve acclaimed American Public Television cooking series. His dedication to culinary education led to the creation of the Jacques Pépin Foundation in 2016. He is the winner of sixteen James Beard Awards and author of more than thirty books, the most recent of which is Jacques Pépin: Cooking My Way. Helen Veit specializes in the history of food in the U.S. Her first book, Modern Food, Moral Food: Self-Control, Science, and the Rise of Modern American Eating in the Early Twentieth Century was a 2014 James Beard Award finalist. "I knew that naïveté was the mother of adventure," he wrote, "I just didn't know how much of it I really had." For somebody like Rinker, who was interested in the history of the Oregon Trail, there were several easier, faster, and safer ways to explore it. But Rinker wasn't interested in them. He wanted, as he calls it, "the sensual feast of traveling in the open air;" the chance not just to learn about history, but to actually experience it. And so Rinker, his brother Nick, and their pack of three mules - Beck, Jake, and Bute - set off on a months-long journey that sent them through fields of blooming wildflowers, across turbulent rivers, beneath starry skies, and nearly over the sides of cliffs. And through it all, they came to see America's history - and the history of the West - not as it had been taught in school, but as it really was. Whether you're an Oregon Trail buff or you've never even played the computer game, this episode is sure to surprise, delight, and thoroughly entertain. FIND RINKER Follow Rinker's work through his publisher, Simon & Schuster, where you can also find the link to his book, The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey. If you take the time to look back through the past 50 years, American cooking has developed exponentially. With this the technique, ingredients and approach to everyday cooking in the home has evolved as well. At the lead of this was a group of formidable chefs, among them, Jacques Pepin. Along with these chefs, Pepin lead culture into a new way of approaching food in the restaurant industry and everyday table alike. With attention essential basic technique, and inspired by his international training, Jacques became a name that has made it's way into all of our homes. From his well loved cooking shows to his family-favorite cookbooks, Jacques has transformed American food culture and the way we approach time in the kitchen across multiple generations. Through this conversation you will feel inspired by his profound wisdom for the everyday chef, laugh at his wit and left awestruck by his life and legacy! For the longtime chef and the novice in the kitchen alike, this rich dialogue will be one you want to pull up a seat for! Here is a little more about our guest and friend, Jacques Pepin: Born in 1935 in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, near Lyon, Pépin always found the kitchen to be a place of both comfort and excitement. He helped in his parents' restaurant, Le Pélican, and at age 13, began an apprenticeship at the Grand Hôtel de L'Europe. He subsequently worked in Paris, ultimately serving as personal chef to three French heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle. After moving to the United States in 1959, Pépin first worked at Le Pavillon, an historic French restaurant in New York City. From 1960 to 1970, he was director of research and new development for Howard Johnson's and developed recipes for the restaurant chain. At the same time, he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Columbia University. Pépin is a former columnist for The New York Times and his articles have appeared in countless food magazines, particularly Food & Wine and author of 30 cookbooks, including the renowned classic La Technique, his biography The Apprentice and most recently A Grandfather's Lessons. In 2017, he was honored with a feature film documentary of his life in the American Masters series: The Art of the Craft. He is the recipient of honorary doctorate degrees from five American universities and was awarded France's highest civilian honor, La Légion d'Honneur, in 2004, as well as the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in 1997 and the Mérite Agricole in 1992. He has received 16 James Beard Foundation Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. In 2015, he received the American Public Television's Lifetime Achievement Award and the inaugural Julia Child Award, which was presented to him at The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. A longtime close friend of Julia Child, he starred with her in a PBS series called Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home, which won both an Emmy Award and a James Beard Foundation Award in 2001. For the past 30 years, Pépin has taught in the Culinary Arts Program at Boston University and, since 1989, he has served as dean of special programs at the International Culinary Center in New York City. He has called Connecticut home since 1975.
Liz Goldberg has taught Fashion Illustration at The Pratt Institute and Drexel University for the past 11 years. Her work is an exploration of the theme of the “diva” – the flamboyantly uninhibited female and the personal and political empowerment she represents. As a painter, graphic artist, and animator, Liz has been inspired by puppets and absurdist theatre, influenced by puppet–like characters reminiscent of Alfred Jarry's forerunner of absurdist theater, Ubu-Roi, the buffoons of modernist playwright Michel de Ghelderode, the existentialist mime plays of Samuel Beckett, and the symbolist and political figures of European puppet theater. Liz has developed these “diva” and puppet-inspired works into experimental animated films in collaboration with filmmaker Warren Bass, broadcast on American Public Television and cable, receiving awards and juried recognition in over 20 countries. The works use animation as an analog to painting, dance and poetry, and are intended to re-define the paradigm of what an animation can be. The process of animation has, in turn, influenced her full-scale paintings and works-on-paper producing diptychs, triptychs, and serial prints with progressive deviations. In 2018, Liz and Warren produced “Vogueing and Other Pleasures” shown at the Film Festival at the Barnes in conjunction with the Musee de Paris. In 2018, the film was also shown as part of “Contexualizing Fashion” at Pratt. A full room installation was created at Joan Shepp where Liz was a resident artist for 3 years 2017- 2020, installing the entire space with 1,750 hand-drawn cells from the animation, as well as paintings and prints.Liz's work was recently part of MINIFEST at Theaterlab - a fun and vibrant event that brought together a variety of artists to share short works throughout Theaterlab's full loft on September 18 and 19 in New York City. MINIFEST is an afternoon of tiny delights, short sparks of new work, and other small surprises. Last produced on March 8, 2020, days before theater closed. This year's MINIFEST focused on Fashion and the Body. Participating artists included Marco Casazza, Liza Cassidy, Blane Charles, Orietta Crispino, Jed Distler, Liz Goldberg, Naoki Iwakawa, Michaela Lind, Stefanie Nelson, Lisa Silvestri, Alex Sollitto, Lesley Ware, Louisa Willis, Ulisespal, Glenna Yu and Lanie Zipoy. ~~~~~~~To explore past episodes of Into the Absurd, visit our Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/pg/Idiopathi...ORThe IRC's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist...And while you're there, be sure to SUBSCRIBE, so you don't miss any future episodes.

MPF Discussion Rodney Whittenberg & Vic CompherAngels and Saints with Rodney Whittenberg & Vic Compher In an American culture which has historically called the body or flesh “bad” and the spirit “good”, “Angels and Saints” are appreciated as evolving human beings who have learned, often through suffering, to integrate Eros or “the Life Force” with wisdom or spiritual awareness. This eros-wisdom expresses itself in a personal sense of wholeness that includes both the acknowledgement of suffering and a deep appreciation of beauty within the sensate world. Angels and Saints are, then, the incarnation of this compassionate and deeply sensual Spirit -- our contemporary “messengers of awe.” On this episode of My Perfect Failure, we have a fascinating conversation with Rodney Whittenberg, one half of the team who have created the fantastic movie which has been accepted to 6 Film Festivals, Chicago Indie, Brighton Rocks, Taronto, Cannes Film Festival. Whilst also receiving an Exceptional Merit award from LGBTQ Unbordered International Film Fest. All of Gray’s films air nationally on American Public Television and globally in China, Australia, France and England. In 2012, his World War II Foundation dedicated the Richard D. Winters Leadership Monument in Normandy, France, honoring American leadership on D-Day and approved by the late Major Richard D. Winters of WWII’s Band of Brothers. The foundation oversaw all the fundraising for the thirteen-foot statue and organized the dedication event in France, attended by the commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division and former Secretary of Homeland Security, Gov. We dined virtually tonight with artist Liz Goldberg and filmmaker Warren Bass, who talked about their artistic collaborations, including Cuban Queens (https://vimeo.com/279495510).Cuban Queens is an experimental animated collaboration by Warren Bass (direction, animation, music), Liz Goldberg (original graphics), and Lowell Boston (animation). The film deconstructs and explores ninety-nine evolving images of Havana’s street divas. Cuban Queens is a rhythmic study of subliminal hand-drawn portraits that evolve through shifting, transient relationships of image-to-image and image-to-sound.~~~~~~~Warren Bass is an independent filmmaker and former Chair of Film & Media Arts at Temple University where he teaches directing, cinematography, and advanced workshops in documentary, fiction and animation as a full professor. He was trained at the Yale School of Drama in directing (with Honors) and at Columbia University in film as their School of the Arts Scholar. He has taught at Yale, NYU, the State University of California, and the American Film Institute, has chaired university departments in Film, Television, and Theater in New England, served as trustee of the University Film Study Center housed at Harvard/MIT, Vice President of the University Film and Video Association, guest editor of The Journal of Film and Video, and for extended periods as Director of Temple University’s graduate program in Film. His essays on visual style have been published in English, Polish, Chinese and Turkish. His textbook on camcorders is published in seven countries. (Featuring P. Allen Smith, landscape designer, conservationist, author, and television host) Landscape designer, conservationist, author, and television host P. Allen Smith discusses the shift towards walkability, density, and community accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis. https://www.afire.org/podcast/lookingforcommunity/ With more drastic climate change effects on the near horizon, and COVID-19 still in the room, it will be critical for investors to track policies and regulations alongside changing social attitudes. As the pandemic continues, healthy buildings aren't just engineering novelties and shiny facades for trade magazines—they're the new baseline for ensuring safe experiences in the built environment at all scales, including an increasingly popular trend in sustainable, walkable, and community-focused exurban developments. In this podcast, P. Allen Smith, prolific designer, author, and host of the P. Allen Smith's Garden Home and P. Allen Smith's Garden to Table series on American Public Television (and keynote speaker at this year's AFIRE Winter Conference in New York) discusses the need for a shift in thinking about value in real estate. What's the real difference between real estate that takes a myopic view of maximizing value per square foot, with little regard for context, and more thoughtful and integrated approaches to urban design, development, and value creation?
Art Wolfe on Planning Ahead & Taking Action, Entrepreneurship, Dissecting Inspiration & Publishing Multiple Books.Art Wolfe (@artwolfe | artwolfe.com) Art Wolfe was born on September 13, 1951 in Seattle, Washington, and still calls the city home. He graduated from the University of Washington with Bachelor's degrees in fine arts and art education in 1975, where he studied under professors such as Jacob Lawrence. His photography career has spanned five decades, a remarkable testament to the durability and demand for his images, his expertise, and his passionate advocacy for the environment and indigenous culture. During that time he has worked on every continent, in hundreds of locations, and on a dazzling array of projects.Wolfe's photographic mission is multi-faceted. By employing artistic and journalistic styles, he documents his subjects and educates the viewer. His unique approach to photography is based on his training in the arts and his love of the environment. His goal has always been to win support for conservation issues by “focusing on what's beautiful on the Earth.” Hailed by William Conway, former president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, as “the most prolific and sensitive recorder of a rapidly vanishing natural world,” Wolfe has created millions of images in his lifetime and travels nearly nine months out of the year photographing for new projects, leading photographic tours and seminars, and giving inspirational presentations to corporate, educational, conservation, and spiritual groups.Long before the genre of ‘conservation photography' was conceived, Wolfe was practicing it. The torrent of news that NPR and its affiliates around the country need to cover would be daunting in the best of times, but to cover it while the health risk is high and revenue is down presents unprecedented challenges. About a year ago, when LaFontaine Oliver took over as president and general manager of WYPR, we talked with him on this program about his plans for our station moving forward. We promised to have him back occasionally to give listeners an update on where the station is heading. Today, we are keeping that promise. Before taking the helm at WYPR, Mr. Oliver led the Orlando NPR station, WMFE, for six years. Before that, he was the general manager of WEAA over at Morgan State University. He also brings a national perspective to the challenges facing public radio today. He has served on the NPR Board of Directors since 2016. And joining us a bit later in the show is Maryland Public Television President and CEO Larry Unger. In addition to his role leading MPT, Mr Unger is also a trustee of America's Public Television Stations, the Washington, D.C.-based advocacy organization for the public television system; and chair of the board of trustees of American Public Television, the largest syndicator of programming for U.S. public TV stations.

Meet Eric Gorges, founder of Detroit’s Voodoo Choppers and host of the American Public Television series, “A Craftsman’s Legacy.” Besides creating bespoke motorcycles, Gorges has made a career out of studying people who work with their hands. In this candid conversation, he reveals that the drive to make things is an obsession all its own, even if it happens to mirror everything we love about riding motorcycles.

Amazing episode reviews the PBS show 'A Craftsman's Legacy' with Eric Gorges. Eric goes over the craftsmen that he has on his show and we review how these entrepreneurs all relate to you. These are masters who engage in pure historical methods and industries. They are all earning their living based on their crafts. On this episode, Eric and I explore the parallels between these masters of their craft and entrepreneurial journeys. Contrary to what you may think, some started later in life. The show itself will be an extraordinary element to explain not only a craft, but what does it take to excel. There is a different specialty craft on each show and will make you realize why these crafts are still very important today and what makes them special. Eric apprentices under each one of them and you can get a bit of a feel for the learning process and for the entrepreneur, you can understand what true passion is. Keep in mind that passion can be developed and is an attitude, not just a love of something. We discuss all of these and more. The show includes 13 crafts just to name a few are the Stone Carver, Saddlemaker, Guitar Maker, Goldsmith, Woodworker and Boatmaker. These journeys that Eric takes really set a great example to set your own path for a career you love or how to make side or secondary income with a hobby or skill.
