When John S. Couch started at Hulu as Vice President of UX and Design in January 2016, one of the first things he wanted to do was produce a vision video. Design is a lot like the parable of the elephant and the blind men, said Couch, author of The Art of Creative Rebellion. In the story, the blind men have never come across an elephant before so each man feels and describes only one part of the elephant, like its trunk or tail—unable to describe the elephant in its entirety “They're all correct, but they're looking at it only through one slice,” Couch said. “And what I wanted to do was make a short film, which described the end result. What the whole elephant looked like.”“And there was an immediate mental shift,” Couch said. “From ‘We're not really sure’ to ‘Oh, that's the elephant.’”In Episode 11 of the Human Insight Podcast, Couch goes on to talk about his career path (such as exaggerating his skill sets to land a job at Wired to the evolution of his role now as a Mr. Wolf—consulting companies on their UX and design problems).

Nicolas Aidoud is the Founder and Managing Partner of HumAIn Capital where he advises Fortune 500 companies on artificial intelligence and deep tech for positive human impact. Nicolas is very positive and pragmatic about the future impact of artificial intelligence and his approach helps us truly understand, access and make sense of AI and the technologies that are both around and in front of us, and how they will impact our future. When did Nicolas decide he had a passion for artificial intelligence & deep tech and how that can impact humans? "AI could be a poison for humans or a cure to eliminate all the outs…burnout, bore out and brown outs." What does this sentence mean? The palette of information that paints the image of AI is pessimistic and often threatening. How does Nicolas see it today? How much has AI progressed in the last 12 months? Moore's Law states that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles about every two years, though the cost of computers is halved. Where are we today? What's the affirmative action we can take here - for a worker, our children, ourselves, what's the proactive attack? Is it every industry that will be impacted? Are there any industries exempt from the influence of AI, VR, AR…? AI machines see above and beyond human capacity. Could it be they can see too far? At what point will we longer know what is real and what is fabricated by technology? How far away is that point? John S Couch who wrote The Art of Creative Rebellion said that creativity is the currency of the future in the face of AI. How does Nicolas see that? For a business leader who has done nothing to date, what is their first step today? How has Nicolas adapted his own life to incorporate and integrate AI or new tech into his world? What is Nicolas' view of the ideal company that has mastered every facet of AI? Could Nicolas see a time where the values of the company, typically adopted by the people, are shared with machines?   LINKS   HumAIn Capital  https://humaincapital.com   HumAIn the Book https://humainthebook.com   Singularity University  https://su.org   The Mojo Sessions website https://www.themojosessions.com   The Mojo Sessions on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/TheMojoSessions?fan_landing=true   The Mojo Sessions on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoSessions/   Gary on Linked in https://www.linkedin.com/in/gary-bertwistle-helping-unlock-great-ideas-b5182011/   Gary on Twitter https://twitter.com/GaryBertwistle   The Mojo Sessions on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/themojosessions/   If you like what you hear, we'd be grateful for a review on iTunes -  click here. In this episode, we spend some time with John S. Couch, who lives and works – and plays – in California. He is also currently VP, Product Design at Hulu. We dive immediately into discussing themes of life, work and the creative process. He brings us briefly through his experience in building teams and what philosophy he employs in building positive culture. He also warns about certain pitfalls in investing too much in “labels”. But, this is not before we discuss the lessons of the samurai and the importance of developing skills and a mindset through the mastery of one thing in order to approach other things. We discuss creating and the state of flow. We hear his views on the connection between experiencing different artforms and the “communion of understanding” with others. And, we also learn his thoughts on how any great art is a (necessary) confrontation. He rounds off the discussion with the two things he deems most important for his success and the ultimate lesson he’s learned in his life. Widely recognised as one of todays great creative minds, John S. Couch is a prolific artist, designer and VP Product Design at streaming service Hulu. John started at Wired Magazine where he developed his love for technology and design before taking on leadership roles at The Museum of Contemporary Art, CBS, eBay and now Hulu. With a Japanese mum and a dad from Texas he's described as part Sumurai, part Cowboy. John has a unique view on living a rebellious life to express our true creative soul. Early in his career John said he lacked confidence around his creativity. When did he believe he could do it? How does John use his creative focus in the face of his creative fear? A big part of who you are as a designer is to look at things and say, why is it like that, and not like this? Has John ever seen himself as a character or an alter ego to step past his own perceived barriers? John shares his important ceremonies or rituals to move from the state of doing to the state of being? How important is the “where" in creativity? How does John embrace Wabi Sabi in his life? What influence has his mum and his Japanese heritage had on him as a man? Does a creative leader today actually need Two Mind… now and then, what is and what could be? John refers to his wife JC as his creative collaborator. Is it intentional? What's behind it? How does the content of the book Extreme Ownership resonate with John for leading creativity? John's view on the Japanese samurai warrior practice called "dying before going into battle."  What does it mean to be rebellious? How would I know I was creatively rebellious?   LINKS   John S Couch website https://www.john-couch.com/about   The book - The Art of Creative Rebellion by John S Couch  https://www.john-couch.com/the-art-of-creative-rebellion   The Mojo Sessions website https://www.themojosessions.com   The Mojo Sessions on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/TheMojoSessions?fan_landing=true   The Mojo Sessions on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoSessions/   Gary on Linked in https://www.linkedin.com/in/gary-bertwistle-helping-unlock-great-ideas-b5182011/   Gary on Twitter https://twitter.com/GaryBertwistle   The Mojo Sessions on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/themojosessions/   © 2020 Gary Bertwistle.  All Rights Reserved.   Any products or companies discussed in the show are not paid endorsements. How do we make career choices that make our life (and business) that much more creative? John S. Couch is Vice President, Product Design for Hulu where he led the redesign of the Hulu Experience. Now he is leading the design of the future of next generation storytelling in emerging platforms and formats at Hulu. His first job out of college was curating an art show in London of Beat writer William Burroughs’ Shotgun Paintings (as implied, shotguns and exploding cans of spray paint were involved) and then, in classic young starving artist mode, he ambulated to Paris, Vienna and Tokyo before finally settling in San Francisco. He launched his design career at Wired Magazine, where he shared an office with Douglas Coupland and developed a love for technology, design and tech and, as he is fluent in Japanese and could write copy, he helped launch Wired Japan. Then he moved to LA, taking leadership roles at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), CBS and eBay before landing at Hulu. John is a true artist, and writing is one of his metier. He has written fiction in the past, but most recently published, The Art of Creative Rebellion - How to champion creativity, change culture and keep your soul. In this episode we discuss the difficult and delicate balance between art, commerce and fulfilling life. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 59:15. Hello from beautiful Montreal.
