The charts for the year 1956 were overtaken by Elvis. No question. There were a few others that illuminated the jukebox namely Fats Domino, Webb Pierce, Little Richard, and The Platters. Rock ‘n roll's impact swept the floor with most burying some fairly incredible performances in it's wake. Call it an avalanche. Call it a mudslide. Call it what you like. As I began to assemble a show looking at the top of the charts for the year, I found that starting at the bottom and working my way up was a revelation. Whether it was country, rhythm & blues, rock ‘n roll or pop…there were some delicious also-rans that I could not ignore so chose to ignore the Top 30 and focused today's show on the so-called losers below the waterline of the Top 40. And what a joy it was! We'll hear from some of them including Big Joe Turner, The Dells, LaVern Baker, Clyde McPhatter, Carl Smith and Kitty Wells in today's show. I hope you'll find some time, morning, noon or night, to listen in.

Music, memory, and migration: Paul Long on also-rans, pirate radio, and other Birmingham ephemera

This Must Be The Place Podcast

As part of Amplify: Story, Resistance, Radio, Liz Taylor of This Must be the Place interviews Paul Long, Professor in Creative and Cultural Industries and a recent arrival from one music city (Birmingham) to another (Melbourne). Birmingham in the UK is known for its connections to diverse genres of music - heavy metal, conscious reggae, grime, bhangra, dance. “Brum” is branded as the birthplace of Black Sabbath and heavy metal, as well as of such ubiquitous bands as UB40, Duran Duran and (previously unbeknownst to Liz) ELO. Birmingham has also been home to a widespread unlicensed radio scene. Particularly during the 1980s and 1990s, unlicensed or ‘pirate' radio served as voices (albeit periodically raided by police) for geographically and culturally specific groups such as Caribbean migrants, and as entry points for micro-genres and local scenes – broadcasting, for example, mobile phone numbers for dance party tickets. Here Paul reflects on the challenges of documenting and curating music cultures which are largely ephemeral, in places home to diverse communities and narratives, and in contexts where government intervention can be a virtue or its opposite –how “a place can take on these challenging narratives”. As both listener and historian Paul describes “going in search of radio”, “trying to find traces and put them back together”, and how different technologies and places interact over time. As well as contrasting the radio and audio landscapes of Birmingham and Melbourne, the discussion covers trade-offs between amateur and professional programming, national and local content, and between celebrating past hits and continuing in the present. As is often the case for musicians “the longer you go on, the more you're burdened with your own standards, your own repertoire”, and “the same happens to places”. Documenting music heritage in a music city like Birmingham involves, on the one hand, exhibitions and mythologies around famous bands. On the other are the more fleeting places, moments, and sounds which are nonetheless important to memory and identity – the value of “recognising not just the big names, but the also-rans, the never-rans, the thank god they never succeeded types - and thinking about what this means to people”. In the age of streaming and digital radio, Paul argues for tracing the origins of relatively recent music genres still matters - “learning about where this stuff came from, and preserving stuff that might otherwise disappear”. In the early 2000s, a small group of friends in Palo-Alto, California started a movement to transform the way products are designed and developed. It came to be known as Design Thinking. Early pioneers included David M. Kelley, founder of IDEO and Diego Rodriguez, one of his star team leaders. The central idea of design thinking is to center all development not around the product or service but around how human beings feel when they experience them. It may sound simple or obvious. But if the process were easy, then why do so many companies still develop mediocre products? In this episode of Driving With Dunne, Diego Rodriguez walks us through the "how" and "why" of design thinking. Mercedes and Ford are among scores of companies weaving design thinking into future product designs. Hello friends, Mick and Nathan here. On Wednesday evening we recorded a podcast. We hadn’t a story prepared, which is something we do regularly enough - but we realised after it’s getting harder and harder to mine an hour’s worth of craic over a video call when we’ve all been detached from each other for what’s coming up on a year now. We need to do something. This podcast has always been a vehicle for myself and himself to make people aware of the other stuff we were doing: Songbook, The Also-Rans, EP launches and album releases. We’ve been unable to do that stuff, so at times we’ve felt unsure about what the podcast was supposed to be. Loads of you started donating to the Patreon to help us deal with the loss of these shudders revenue streams, a hugely appreciated gesture and one that tells us there are people who want us to keep going. So for those people... We’re going to write and record an album together. Yous have all been turbo sound with your donations- they’ve helped us buy equipment, put on shows and dug us out of holes when the work dried up. Assuming these aren’t pity pounds, it tells us you must like what we do, so we’re going to do what we hoped the podcast would allow us to do. Make music for our audiences. We don’t know what shape this will pan out in. We’re not ones for meticulous planning. If you’re reading this and electing to follow, you’re on board from day one. Imagine if it’s a disaster. It could ruin everything. The Maddest Notion of all. But sure, half the craic is in the trying.   THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO'S BEEN DONATING TO OUR PATREON THROUGH THIS TIME, YE'RE THE ABSOLUTE BEST! SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Bing Crosby. Frank Sinatra. Elvis. The Beatles. The Cars. Run-D.M.C. Pearl Jam. The White Stripes. Beyoncé. Billie Eilish. Riiiight? But what about… Rudy Vallee. Mel Torme. Gene Vincent. The Kinks. Squeeze. The Fat Boys. Soundgarden. The Hives. Rihanna. Grimes. Every era is defined by its most popular stars. Or is that just how we remember it? Almost none of the stars in that first list were the top sellers of their decades. Were they influential? Absolutely. The best? Debatable but at least top five in all cases. They all deserve their fame & respect. But even they will name check artists from the decade preceding them that were not so famous. Or MORE ACCURATELY – these “also-rans” were very famous in their day, and just didn't have the sales or historical legs to remain in our consciousness as long. I take for granted that I know not just the big mahoffs, but the second-, third-, and sometimes fourth-tier artists of most eras. Thing is, both revisionist history and subsequent generations often don't. And what a shame. I'll take Mel Torme over Frank any day. Squeeze over the Cars. The Hives over the White Stripes. For many of the other top artists, yeah, they're my faves or just about even. But there's no way I can diminish the impact of Gene Vincent or the Kinks or … the Fat Boys. The Fat Boys. This week's pick. A band I was SO into when they came out. A band that maybe didn't invent but definitely popularized beatboxing. They were the first and biggest to make that happen. A band not afraid to be humorous. Or downright cheesy. Were they better than Run-D.M.C.? Nah. Did I like them more than Run-D.M.C. Nope. But I'd bet most people have heard of THAT band, and very few people remember the Fat Boys, let alone how HUGE they were. So let's give a moment to all those bands that don't get as much press or credit, and celebrate how much richer & more diverse every era (or every-THING) is if we dig beneath the surface. My music gets nutty & playful now & then. And yeah, hip-hop has always been a huge influence. As for the Fat Boys themselves, I've done some beatboxing, and there's probably no better song of mine to represent their influence than the same one I shared last week, from my band REC's brand new EP, Syzygy for the Weird: REC - “Make Me Mic My Mouth” (from the album Syzygy for the Weird) Do you remember the Fat Boys? Do you remember how HUGE they were? What artists from other eras do you wish people remembered more than the ones everyone already knows? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Would you please help us improve the show by voting for your favourite track from this episode? TweetPinShare Welcome to our Wax Time Special where we play all vinyl today, and all at 45rpm - that is except for Tobin's new music shot. We've got some cracking vinyl to play you today, and it was a difficult decision to make. We listened to countless vinyl records in preparation for this show, and many were left out of the final cut. However, it's not all bad news. Firstly, we saved some of the vinyl that didn't cut it and we produced some exclusive content featuring a few of those. Read on to find out more. Secondly, we enjoyed making the premium content so much, and we have tons more vinyl that was left out, we're probably going to do another, if not more, highlighting those. Everything here is from the late '80s onward, so we haven't even really plumbed the depths of the vinyl heyday. Because of this, we've got stacks more vinyl in the can. So there's more to come. As Tobin hinted at in the show, he's got mountains of 78s in his collection. In fact, we believe Tobin is the only serious shellac collector in London. He curates an enormous collection. As a result of this, it's looking like a Shellac Time Special is on its way. Track Listing Nothing Is W.H. LungFind Time To Be Yourself SExpressHey! Thanks for listening, we had a lot of fun putting this episode together and there's more. There's no way you can put together a show like this without ending up with some "also rans". And we did have some contenders that didn't make the cut for the main show. You can find out what these were in this exclusive mini-show hosted by Richard.TAKE ME TO THIS EXCLUSIVE SHOW Vinyl. Why? That's a great question - and one that deserves an answer. We like to use the analogy of cinema and TV. Whilst it's great to watch a movie on TV it doesn't measure up to a cinematic experience. And so it os the same with vinyl. Listening to or streaming MP3 is great, and the sound quality is excellent but it doesn't have the theatre of pulling a record out of the sleeve and playing it on your trusty turntable. Add to that the record artwork, coloured vinyl if your lucky and the warm tones and surface noise that accompanies it and you've got yourself a fantastic experience. Nothing gives us more pleasure here than having a dig about in the crates and pulling out a long lost nugget and giving it a spin. Add a nice bottle of Cahors into the mix and you're nearing nirvana. We love to play vinyl on the show, so if you're new to us, why not take a listen at another vinyl episode here.
