I was recently sitting in one of my Change Leadership classes for my Master's degree in Organizational Leadership, and my teacher asked us, “What would it look like if, as change leaders, we were to suspend certainty more often?” I immediately made a note to myself, “podcast episode on suspending certainty!” As someone who craves certainty but understands that nothing is certain, I often think about becoming more comfortable with impermanence. I've never heard this referred to as “suspending certainty”, but this term struck me, and I knew I wanted to dig into it with you all! In this episode, we talk about the importance of suspending certainty in leadership and personal growth. We talk through the benefits of embracing uncertainty, including: Increased curiosity Access to new perspectives Openness to learning and new opportunities Increased surprise, delight, and joy Gifts that come when we step out of our “I got it all figured out” ego Resilience, resourcefulness, tenacity, creativity, fun, and JOY are all born out of figuring out new things, embracing new realities, letting go of the old, and stepping into new opportunities where we don't know exactly how things will go. What might happen for you if you felt prepared to step into uncertainty at any time? Suspending certainty will help you with this preparation. Points of Interest0:00 – 1:00 – Introduction to Forecasting Challenges: Marcel and Kristen set the stage by identifying forecasting as a critical but often misunderstood aspect of agency operations, particularly in scaling businesses.1:06 – 2:30 – Defining Forecasting's Importance: They explain how forecasting provides the necessary visibility to manage capacity, revenue, and key metrics, forming the foundation for informed decision-making.2:47 – 3:48 – Forecasting as a Management Function: Marcel discusses how balancing workload and staffing is a core leadership task, becoming more complex and high-stakes as agencies grow in size.5:05 – 6:17 – Bottom-Up Forecasting Explained: Marcel describes the traditional method of forecasting via detailed task-level planning, often used by project managers to allocate resources with precision.6:32 – 7:52 – Limitations of Bottom-Up Approaches: Kristen and Marcel highlight how bottom-up forecasting becomes difficult to scale due to its complexity and sensitivity to frequent changes in scope or staffing.7:59 – 9:39 – Top-Down Forecasting Defined: The conversation shifts to top-down forecasting, which simplifies inputs by modeling at the role or department level, enabling faster, strategic scenario planning.11:00 – 12:20 – Embracing Uncertainty in Leadership Planning: Marcel explains how top-down methods are better suited to leadership conversations, which often require evaluating multiple uncertain scenarios quickly.13:04 – 14:27 – Statistical Logic Behind Simplicity: Marcel introduces the concept of reliability block diagrams, illustrating why less granular systems can actually offer more consistent accuracy over time.17:00 – 17:45 – Precision vs. Accuracy in Uncertain Contexts: The hosts explore how broader, less precise estimates (e.g., ranges) are often more accurate and actionable when future outcomes are unknown.20:31 – 23:01 – Keeping Systems Separate for Efficiency: Marcel warns against tightly coupling bottom-up and top-down systems, advocating for independent but aligned processes to avoid maintenance burdens.26:15 – 27:02 – Material Discrepancies and Process Discipline: They stress that small mismatches between forecasting systems aren't necessarily problems and underscore the importance of scope-driven planning.30:57 – 34:20 – Getting Started with Top-Down Forecasting: The episode closes with advice on how agencies can start building simple top-down models using team capacity and project estimates to guide executive decisions.Show NotesBook a call and learn more about our Forecasting systemLinkedIn Post on Bottom-Up vs Top-Down MathRequest demo videos of our reporting platform

The Michael Yardney Podcast | Property Investment, Success & Money
When it comes to property investing, the noise from the financial media can be deafening. But how much of what they say is really worth your attention? There are many commonly held beliefs about property investing that aren't only questionable but are also utterly false. Sadly, some investors go through their entire property journey believing them. And that's a shame. They waste precious time buying the wrong property or using faulty strategies because they listened to bad advice. So in today's show Brett Warren and I discuss the myths perpetuated by financial media, and the role of property investors in the Australian economy. Takeaways The financial media often misrepresents property investment. Investors are typically everyday people, not greedy. Property investment requires a long-term perspective. Cash flow is important, but capital growth is essential. A strategic plan is crucial for successful investing. Fear-based media can hinder investment decisions. Independent advice is valuable and often necessary. Understanding market cycles is vital for investors. Experience in property investment is irreplaceable. Ceri speaks with author and former CEO Margaret Heffernan about embracing uncertainty as a creative tool. From her journey through theatre, BBC production, tech leadership, to becoming a bestselling author, she shares how uncertainty isn't something to fear but a space where possibility thrives. Her latest book also explores how artists navigate and flourish in unpredictability and how in uncertainty lies choice, freedom, opportunity, exploration and adventure. KEY TAKEAWAYS Margaret embodies creative flexibility and has in her career, from theatre to BBC producer to tech CEO to acclaimed author, proved creative thinking transcends industries and can lead to unexpected opportunities. Uncertainty contains freedom, choice, and opportunity. If we eliminated it life would turn into a mere to-do list. Artists inherently understand this and demonstrate how to thrive within ambiguity. Heffernan tests ideas by asking: "If I ignore it, will it go away?" The ideas that persist (whether for businesses or books) are the ones worth pursuing, her creative instincts can guide important decisions. For emerging artists, the intrinsic reward of creating meaningful work often outweighs financial stability and many choose creative uncertainty over predictable comfort because the satisfaction exceeds anything else they could do. When faced with rejection or indifference to your ideas, instead of being crushed, consider that you might just need to explain it better. Persistence and refinement are essential creative skills. Perfectionism cripples creativity, experimentation and being willing to try different approaches when stuck can help you as an artist. Success often comes through iteration rather than getting it right the first time. Storytelling is central to communicating complex ideas effectively, Margaret structures her talks and writing around "tentpole stories" that support her arguments, making abstract concepts accessible and memorable. BEST MOMENTS "I'm quite startlingly comfortable with uncertainty. I remember the very last startup I ran, I ended up closing down because I could not find a path to profitability. I just had a real confidence that at some point it would become clear. And at some point it did." "The hard boiled business person is going to say, look at the mess we're in, and you're saying we need more art? Are you out of your mind? The mess that got us here isn't gonna get us out. We need a very profound mindset shift." "In uncertainty lies choice. In uncertainty lies freedom. In uncertainty lies opportunity, exploration, adventure. Most people don't wanna know what they're getting for their birthday." "I use the test: if I ignore the idea, will it go away? The businesses I ended up running were ideas that wouldn't go away and I used pretty much the same test for books." "For all that I was strongly advised not to write Embracing Uncertainty, regardless of how it does, I would've been very unhappy if I'd wimped out." "Instead of getting crushed by indifference, I thought, actually I just need to explain it better. That's actually such a brilliantly inspiring take on taking responsibility for how we're communicating our ideas." "We are not fated to be one thing or another. It's up to us.” "When I talk to people about eliminating uncertainty, I'm only about halfway through the story when they suddenly realise, wow, this is not what we want. This is not what anyone wants in their life." Sue Stockdale speaks to adventurer, author, and deep thinker Ed Ley-Wilson. Ed shares insights from his life exploring both the outdoors and the mind. From kayaking the rugged west coast of Scotland to reflecting on resilience, solitude, and the power of slowing down, Ed reveals how adventure - whether on land, sea, or within ourselves shapes our engagement with the world. About Ed Ley-WilsonEd has over thirty years of working and engaging with business, community, educational, social and environmental issues throughout the Highlands of Scotland. He has undertaken long self-supported kayaking journeys in Norway and Patagonia and has run 1200 miles of the Great Wall of China (1988) and the 2000 mile length of the Himalayas (1990). Ed is no stranger to hardship and during his 2022 kayaking journey up the west coast of Scotland he faced some of the worst weather in that region for years. He also has two books to his name, ‘The Himalayan Shuffle' and ‘Kayaking the Sea Roads.Key Quotes"Adventure isn't just about the physical challenge; it's about how we engage with the world around us and what we learn from it.""Solitude teaches you resilience in a way nothing else can - you have to sit with your thoughts and find your own way through them.""Whether on the sea or in life, you can't always control what happens, but you can control how you respond to it.""The lessons I learned from John Ridgway weren't just about survival; they were about self-reliance, discipline, and understanding your own limits.""Slowing down and disconnecting from the noise of the modern world is one of the greatest gifts adventure can offer.""It's not a weakness to not know stuff. In this episode, Brian Klaas explains the concept of whether things are a fluke or fate, and explores how embracing uncertainty can lead to a living a fuller life. Brian makes the case that randomness and chaos might be exactly what makes our lives matter so much, and how we tend to worship at the “Altar of Progress in the Church of Control.” We make plans, set goals, and these are good things, but we only have so much control. And Brian teaches that accepting this can be a relief, because the point isn’t to control everything, but to influence what we can. Key Takeaways: The concept of happiness derived from intrinsic values rather than material possessions and social status. The importance of thoughts and actions in shaping our lives and experiences. Exploration of chaos theory and the unpredictability of life. The idea that we control nothing but influence everything, emphasizing the ripple effects of our actions. Personal stories illustrating how random events can profoundly impact lives. The empowering nature of recognizing the influence of our choices. The tension between control and acceptance of life’s randomness. The critique of societal values that prioritize material success over personal fulfillment and relationships. Encouragement to embrace individual uniqueness and create for personal expression rather than external validation. In this week's episode of The Life of a Bon Vivant, Beeta dives into the messy, often uncomfortable space of uncertainty, where the future feels foggy, plans feel wobbly, and nothing seems set in stone. Speaking from her own experience of living abroad, running a business, and navigating life off the traditional timeline, she shares how uncertainty shows up in unexpected ways and how we're often taught to fear it. But instead of resisting it, Beeta explores how we might start embracing it with more curiosity and trust. Inspired by the French way of savouring everyday life and slowing down, she invites us to rethink our relationship with the unknown—not as something to solve or control, but as a doorway to deeper presence and self-trust.Get notified about the latest episode and more: https://monpetitfour.com/sign-upFollow along on Instagram: https://Instagram.com/MonPetitFour

In this episode of the Creative Genius podcast, I interview Rebe Huntman about her debut memoir, "My Mother in Havana, a memoir of magic and miracle." Rebe shares her personal story of losing her mother at a young age and the subsequent decades of feeling disconnected from her memory. Driven by a deep longing and intuition, Rebe embarked on a 30-day DIY pilgrimage to Cuba to seek a different perspective on grief and connection. The conversation delves into how Rebe's background as a Latin dancer led her to discover the spiritual roots of Cuban dances and the traditions of honoring the deceased. Rebe recounts her experiences immersing herself in rituals dedicated to the goddess Oshun, visiting the sanctuary of Cuba's patron saint, and meeting with a spiritist who she hoped would connect her with her mother.Rebe and I discuss the importance of intuition and following one's unique path, even when it doesn't seem logical. We also explore the disconnect in Western culture from ancestral connections, magic, and meaningful rituals, contrasting it with the Cuban traditions of keeping the dead close. The conversation touches on the challenges of staying creative and connected to one's inner voice in the face of overwhelming global issues and personal fears. Rebe shares her belief in creativity as a portal and emphasizes the importance of honouring inner longings and choosing to champion humanity. She also shares her personal rituals for grounding and connecting with her intuition and ancestors, offering practical advice for listeners seeking to do the same. Ultimately, Rebe's story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, the wisdom of intuition, and the potential for magic and miracle in our lives, even in the darkest of times.
We're often bombarded with messages equating success with rapid achievement and instant gratification. Today we are diving into "slow hope," a sustainable form of hope that doesn't rush outcomes but allows time for healing and growth. Unlike traditional hope tied to quick results, slow hope builds resilience over time. Many feel hopeless amid life's challenges or cling desperately to change. Slow hope shifts this perspective by embracing patience and gradual progress. It encourages us not only to focus on end goals but also appreciate the journey itself. Slow hope isn't about instant fixes; it's about steady optimism through small steps toward big goals without burnout or frustration from unmet expectations. Embracing slow hope transforms how we handle uncertainty—building inner strength against setbacks—and fosters long-term personal growth free from constant stressors demanding quick solutions at every turn in our fast-paced world today! Let's break it down… Key Points: Understanding Slow Hope Unlike traditional hope that is tied to specific outcomes or quick resolutions—a mindset that can lead to burnout when things don't go as planned—slow hope is about fostering resilience through patience and trust in life's process. It encourages individuals not just to focus on immediate results but also on gradual progress over time. The Problem with Rapid Progress Our society's obsession with speed can create unrealistic expectations leading many people into cycles of stress or feeling inadequate when they don't achieve their goals quickly enough. By embracing slow hope instead: You release yourself from unnecessary pressures. You open up space for genuine healing. You cultivate an enduring sense of optimism even amidst uncertainty. The Concept of Hope Common perceptions of hope in moments of uncertainty Distinction between traditional hope and slow hope The introduction of 'slow hope'—a sustainable form of optimism Understanding Slow Hope Definition and characteristics of slow hope How slow hope differs from traditional hope Importance and benefits of slow hope in personal growth The Role of Slow Hope in Modern Life Challenges in modern life related to instant gratification and quick fixes The pressure of achieving rapid outcomes How slow hope provides a counterbalance to the fast-paced lifestyle Cultivating Slow Hope Step-by-step guide on how to develop a mindset of slow hope Techniques such as self-reflection, patience cultivation, and mindful progression Importance of breaking down big goals into smaller, manageable steps Embracing Uncertainty and Building Resilience Learning to embrace life's uncertainties through slow hope Building resilience by accepting life's ups and downs How a long-term perspective fosters growth and patience Changing Your Mindset with Slow Hope Shifting focus from immediate outcomes to the process of growth The impact of slow hope on reducing anxiety and stress Enhancing self-esteem and cultivating gratitude for small wins To practice slow hope: 1. Acknowledge where you are. 2. Release pressure for immediate results. 3. Break large goals into manageable steps. 4. Cultivate patience through reflection. 5. Celebrate small wins along the way. This approach reduces anxiety by focusing less on perfectionism or rapid achievements while fostering gratitude for everyday victories. The Power of Patience and Gratitude The crucial role of patience in slow hope Celebrating small victories and maintaining motivation over time Transforming daily life through the practice of gratitude The Quiet Strength of Slow Hope The quiet, persistent nature of slow hope as a force for change Understanding transformation as a journey, not a race Encouragement to embrace slow hope for personal empowerment Conclusion: By incorporating these strategies into everyday life practices consistently overtime will inevitably result increased levels satisfaction derived purely living authentically aligned values held dear personally speaking too importantly so much else besides merely achieving tangible milestones alone… Have you checked out the GYLTG Empowerment Hub on Apple? This week's guest has spent over 50 years conducting ground-breaking research showing that your thoughts have a profound impact on your body. Dr Ellen J. Langer is Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, and widely known as the 'mother of mindfulness'. She is the recipient of three Distinguished Scientists awards and the author of twelve books, including her very latest, The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health. In our conversation, we discuss how our mindsets directly affect our physical health, why much of what we attribute to ageing may actually be a consequence of our beliefs and the real meaning of mindfulness. We also explore whether as a society, we need to rethink the concept of work-life balance, with Ellen suggesting that we should instead focus on "work-life integration," where we find interest and joy in whatever we're doing. She also shares a powerful technique that has helped many patients with long term conditions like MS, Parkinson's and chronic pain and she outlines a refreshing approach to decision making: instead of trying to make the "right" decision, we should choose and then "make the decision right". This is a powerful conversation that reminds all of us that we have a lot more control over our wellbeing than we might initially think. Ellen is a wonderful human, full of knowledge, expertise and passion - and the ideas she shares have the power to transform your health, longevity and happiness. In this episode, we welcome Maggie Jackson, whose latest book, Uncertain, has become essential reading for navigating today's complex world. Known for her groundbreaking work on attention and distraction, Maggie now turns her focus to uncertainty—not as a problem to be solved, but as a skill to be cultivated. Note: Uncertain won an Artificiality Book Award in 2024—check out our review here: https://www.artificiality.world/artificiality-book-awards-2024/In the interview, we explore the neuroscience of uncertainty, the cultural biases that make us crave certainty, and why our discomfort with the unknown may be holding us back. Maggie unpacks the two core types of uncertainty—what we can't know and what we don't yet know—and explains why understanding this distinction is crucial for thinking well in the digital age.Our conversation also explores the implications of AI—as technology increasingly mediates our reality, how do we remain critical thinkers? How do we resist the illusion of certainty in a world of algorithmically generated answersMaggie's insights challenge us to reframe uncertainty—not as fear, but as an opportunity for discovery, adaptability, and even creativity. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by ambiguity or pressured to always have the “right” answer, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on why being uncertain might be one of our greatest human strengths.Links:Maggie: https://www.maggie-jackson.com/Uncertain: https://www.prometheusbooks.com/9781633889194/uncertain/Do you enjoy our conversations like this one? In this encore episode of The Creative Genius Podcast, with a brand new intro - I revisit a powerful conversation with the wise and insightful Jane Dunnewold. In a time of uncertainty and upheaval, I'm reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster so many of us are experiencing—fear, despair, hope, and the flickering light of creativity. I am candidly shares my own struggle with doom scrolling, the paralysis it caused, and the steps I am taking to reclaim my inner peace.Jane's wisdom offers a timely and profound exploration of the inner bullies that live within us—those relentless voices of self-doubt, fear, and unworthiness that hold us back. I connect this concept to the larger external forces at play in the world today, recognizing that until we learn to defeat the bullies in our own minds, we will struggle to stand up to the ones outside of us.This episode is an invitation to step into deeper self-awareness, to recognize the power of creativity as a means of resistance, and to become part of the essential ‘islands of sanity' in a chaotic world. Join me as I share my thoughts, vulnerabilities and inspiration along with, Jane's transformative insights, and a heartfelt call to reconnect with creativity as an act of personal and collective resilience.Join an island of sanity inside the Creative Genius Patreon
