Can we hit the road responsibly during a pandemic? As someone planning to car camp or take a drive into the wilderness, you might not feel like you alone could make a huge impact on this pandemic-- but the reality is that travel can lead to transmission-- which means that travelers have the capacity to create an immense effect on the trajectory of viral spread. The good news is that we're not here to make you feel guilty. We know you want to travel (we do too!), but more importantly: we want you to be knowledgeable and prepared, whether you're planning to get out there soon, or hoping to sometime later in 2020. In this episode, we're aiming to help in that process by providing you with questions, tips, and tools to make your own, best decisions at the time. We look at information through the eyes of women who love to travel and also hold public health as a top priority: Seattle-based nurse and overlander Emily Scott, travel nurse Em Cheng, and founder of the Outdoor Advocacy Project, Katie Boué.So tune in and get ready to be honest with yourself when it comes to responsible travel. We’re heading into summer and parks and trails and beaches around the US are starting to open up again amidst the pandemic. One more time all together, fam, CONSCIENTIOUS CONSUMERISM IS A MYTH. Okay, now that that’s out of the way and we’re all registered to vote, we’re ready to get listening! The episode starts off by highlighting badbass bitches Caroline Gleich and Katie Boué staging a climate rally at outdoor retailers convention, and then Clare gets cozy with a couple glasses of wine and the one and only Maiza! The women talk climbing grades, being ultra competitive with your partner, falling down (A LOT), and growing up in the jungle?!?!?! Although Maiza refuses to make jaguar noises on air, you will not be disappointed as she regales Clare with her tales of adventure across both Americas. Clare teaches Maiza what the word drowning means! Maiza teaches Clare that "army" is not a catch-all phrase for people in the military! Happy listening (and learning), bitches. As always, rooting for you! XoxoPodcast IG: @backcountrybtchsClare's IG: @miss.clare.in.the.wildMaiza's IG: @maizalimarock

When you're on the go, it can feel freeing to not have roots. You're here, then you're there. But the reality is that all of us who travel, for any length of time, create an impact on the communities we travel to and through, which can be tough to remember that because it feels like sleeping in a public parking lot for 7 hours doesn't leave a lot of room to give back to the people who live down the street. Or does it?Katie Boué, part-time road traveler and full-time public lands advocate, has a lot to say about the give and take we engage in as travelers: both in the outdoors as well as in local communities. Because the reality is that no matter how often we relocate, we leave an impact wherever we go, and that acknowledgement in itself holds power. In this episode, you'll hear:Katie shares her many varied types of road travel she's done in the recent pastHow Katie got started in public lands advocacyThe two types of stories we tell policy makers about the outdoorsHow large the outdoor economy is (spoiler: it's huge)Anecdotes of how local communities have benefitted from outdoor recreationHow any type of outdoor recreation is an extractive activityWays we can give back to the land and local communities while travelingHow we vote with our individual dollarsThe vast potential of positive change through social mediaThe two easy things you can do to develop a deeper connection to the places you travel throughOther Resources:Follow Katie on Instagram - @katieboueFollow Katie on Twitter - @katieboueKatie's blog - The Morning FreshLearn more about the Native Lands you're onListen to Katie on NPR - Controversy Blooms Over Wildflower GeotaggingJoin the On the Road, Our Way Facebook Group!Sponsor Websites & CodesMerrellEnjoy this episode? Learn how you can help protect the outdoors you love by using social media. We interview Katie Boué about how you can use the phone in your pocket to enact real-life change in an ever-changing landscape. Katie Boué cares. She's a resource for people - young and old - across the outdoor industry. Over the past year, she has become the megaphone for using social media as an advocacy tool. A proud Miami native with Cuban, Irish, and Venezualian heritage, Katie made a name for herself as the writer behind her blog, The Morning Fresh, writing with vulnerability about her experiences hiking, climbing, and trying new sports like trail running. More recently, she took the social media reigns at the Outdoor Industry Association, or OIA.There she learned what she already knew - social media is a powerful tool. She’s since gone freelance from her full time role with OIA, but she considers herself a full time advocate for the outdoors. A theme for this episode is what Katie said right off the bat - we’re all in this together. We can all be advocates for conservation and public land.
